Jim James and The Claypool Lennon Delirium Set Co-Headline Tour
Jim James and The Claypool Lennon Delirium have announced plans for a summer 2019 co-headline tour. The two acts will join forces for nine dates across the United States and Canada – beginning June 21 at Salt Lake City’s Eccles Theater and then continuing into early July.
“For over 150 years, the firm of Claypool and Lennon has been providing clients with only the finest in rock and roll delirium and stark raving madness. This summer, I am excited and honored to say that we will be teaming up to offer a brand new twist on one of the most time tested and proven methods for inducing beautifully swirling and whirling delightfully delicious delirium: the healing power of rock and roll!” said James.
“Tour pairing is often a challenge in my world but I think we have a good package with The Delirium and Jim James. Jimās music, from my perspective, is palatable to the masses yet has just enough eclecticism to keep an oddball like me intrigued. I look forward to shambling around the country with him,” said Les Claypool.
Presales begin Wednesday, March 6 at 10 am (local). Local presales follow on Thursday, March 7 at 10 am (local). All presales conclude Thursday, March 7 at 10 pm (local). Smithsonian Folkways Celebrates “The Social Power of Music” In New Box Set
On February 22,Ā 2019Ā Smithsonian Folkways RecordingsĀ will releaseĀ The Social Power of Music, a new box set that examines the roles of music in our lives from many angles and through many voices.Ā Over four CDs, 80+ tracks and an illustrated 124-page booklet,Ā The Social Power of MusicĀ presents some of the most powerful moments in Smithsonian Folkwaysā vast and ever-expanding catalog, putting them in conversation with each other to highlight the ways song has shaped the societies we live in
The Social Power of MusicĀ looks at this music through four different perspectives.Ā Disc 1:Ā Songs of StruggleĀ channels the visceral power of the fight for civil rights, featuring household names from Folkwaysā archives includingĀ Woody Guthrie,Ā The Freedom SingersĀ andĀ Pete Seeger, and songs that defined a generation.Ā Disc 2:Ā Sacred SoundsĀ presents music from many religions and spiritual practices, in some cases drawing from rarely heard or known ceremonies.Ā Disc 3:Ā Social Songs and GatheringsĀ shows how we use music to come together, often in celebration.Ā Disc 4:Ā Global MovementsĀ looks to the use of roots music in key political movements around the world, tapping into anti-fascist verses, odes to the working class, and polemics against governmental corruption and violence.
The box set, and the idea of musicās centrality to the way people connect to one another, inspired the upcoming Smithsonian Year of Music, which presents music and sound events in Washington, DC and around the country every day throughout 2019.Ā The series will kick off with a listening party for the compilation on January 2, 2019 at Songbyrd Record CafĆ© and Music House in Washington DC.Ā āThe Social Power of Musicā will also be the animating theme of the 2019 Smithsonian Folklife Festival, which takes place annually on the National Mall.
Listen to a sampler from the box set here:
The massive scope and virtuosic assembling of this box set may reflect the original vision of Smithsonian Folkways to record and document the entire world.Ā Songs that rang true in the 1960ās, railing against the plight of women, minorities and human rights, are just as poignant over fifty years later, as the world has begun to roll back much of what was gained by the global civil rights movements. Thereās a visceral power, a frisson, in hearing how the lyrics inĀ The Social Power of MusicĀ reverberate across generations and cultures.Ā The hope for the artists making this music at the time, for us listening now, and for those writing new songs inspired by this music, is the same as it ever was: to show us the paths to make a better world.
Brought together on these four discs is music from labels that Smithsonian Folkways has acquired over the years, includingĀ Arhoolie, which documented the music of social gatherings throughout the US, andĀ Paredon, which released activist music from around the world, as wellĀ UNESCOĀ andĀ Monitor, which documented folk traditions across the entire globe.Ā Ā Civil rights legendĀ Fannie Lou Hamer, a woman who shook the halls of power, leading a congregation in song with her mind āset on freedom.āĀ Lebanese musicianĀ Marcel Khalifeās quavering voice singing the Palestinian poem āThe Passportā about being required to carry a passport in your native land.Ā Ā Country Joe McDonaldās acerbic Vietnam anti-war song āI Feel Like Iām Fixinā To Dieā.Ā Hymns of the Old Regular Baptists of Kentucky, the rhythmic call-and-response from African-American railroad worker songs, the blend of high-pitched charango and vocals from Latin American protest singerĀ Suni Paz.
The Social Power of MusicĀ is set to remind us of the universality of these moments, showing that through music we are united.
