Jack White’s Third Man Announces Partnership With Standing Rock School

0

Jack White’s Third Man Books and Third Man Records are grateful and excited to announce a new collaborative project in support of The Defenders of the Water School at Standing Rock (Mní Wičhóni Nakíčižiŋ Owáyawa), with plans to publish the activist students’ work in the public forum and to help the school raise much needed funds.

Under the guidance of Director of Development, April Rain, of Mní Wičhóni Nakíčižiŋ Owáyawa, thirdmanbooks.com will feature a page dedicated to exhibiting work, across various media, created by students and volunteers from The Defenders of the Water School. This public forum will allow the students’ voices to be heard the world over. Third Man Books is humbled to have the opportunity to display their inspiring work and assist in spreading public awareness of the ongoing struggle at Standing Rock. This is a situation that should not be viewed in isolation — this is a situation that affects us all. Water is life.

In order to help the school fund its program in the Očhéthi Šakówiŋ Camp community in South Dakota, we would like to give you an opportunity to donate and show solidarity with the students and their families by wearing and representing the school on your heart, over your chest. Proceeds from sales of this original Third Man t-shirt design — done in collaboration with and approved by the school — will be donated directly to aid the school.

The Defenders of the Water school serves the families of the NoDAPL camp communities. In addition to helping families understand the homeschooling laws in their state, they provide educational opportunities for children ages seven to thirteen. The morning begins with a lesson in Lakota language and culture. Classes are also offered daily in English and Math. Members of the camp community also provide lessons about their traditions and volunteers share their knowledge in workshops.

CTV and The Canadian Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences (CARAS) announced today that multi-platinum, singer-songwriter Shawn Mendes is confirmed to perform on CTV’s broadcast of THE 2017 JUNO AWARDS. Following the successful release of his latest album Illuminate this fall, four 2016 MTV EMA wins, two 2016 IHEART RADIO MMVA wins, and a performance on SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE this past weekend, Mendes returns to the JUNO stage for the third year in a row. THE 2017 JUNO AWARDS airs live on CTV and CTV GO from the Canadian Tire Centre in Ottawa on Sunday, April 2, with more broadcast details to come in the coming weeks.

“There’s no better way to showcase Canadian music during the 150th anniversary of confederation than to have one of the country’s most-impactful international artists take the JUNO stage,” said Randy Lennox, President, Broadcasting and Content, Bell Media. “We look forward to welcoming this young superstar back for what is guaranteed to be a spectacular JUNO Awards broadcast.”

“We couldn’t be happier to have Shawn back at the JUNO Awards in our Nation’s Capital,” said Allan Reid, President & CEO, CARAS/The JUNO Awards and MusiCounts. “In 2017 we celebrate the sesquicentennial of confederation, and this is just the start of what is going to be an unforgettable line-up for the show.”

Just in time for the holidays, tickets for THE 2017 JUNO AWARDS broadcast are available starting at $39 through the Canadian Tire Centre Box Office, by phone at 1-877-788-3267 and online at ticketmaster.ca. The JUNO Awards has partnered with Plus 1 so that $1 from every ticket is donated to MusiCounts, helping to ensure that children and youth across Canada have access to musical instruments. Plus 1 is a non-profit that partners with touring artists to facilitate a $1 add-on from every concert ticket to go to a cause the artist partner believes in.

The time Saturday Night Live booked the punk band Fear to perform

0

John Belushi once who lobbied successfully to get the punk band Fear a spot as a musical guest on the 1981 Halloween episode of his former show Saturday Night Live. Belushi had originally offered Fear the soundtrack for his major motion picture Neighbors. The film’s producers eventually forced Fear off the project, and Belushi got them the infamous SNL gig as compensation. The band’s appearance included a group of slamdancers, among them Belushi, Ian MacKaye of Minor Threat (and later Fugazi), Tesco Vee of The Meatmen, Harley Flanagan and John Joseph of the Cro-Mags, and John Brannon of Negative Approach. The show’s director originally wanted to prevent the dancers from participating, so Belushi offered to be in the episode if the dancers were allowed to stay. The end result was the shortening of Fear’s appearance on TV. They started their second song by saying, “It’s great to be in New Jersey”, drawing boos from SNL’s New York live audience. Fear played “I Don’t Care About You”, “Beef Bologna”, “New York’s Alright If You Like Saxophones”, and started to play “Let’s Have a War” when the telecast faded into commercial.

It wasn’t too long before the slamdancers started treading the boards, the floor, and the set. Cameras, a piano and other property were damaged.
