Drake Dominates Apple Music Best-Selling Singles And Album Chart Of 2016

Apple has unveiled its Best of 2016 lists, celebrating the best and most downloaded apps, music, movies, TV shows, books and podcasts across the App Store, iTunes and iBooks.

On Apple Music, Drake dominates the top song and album spots with “One Dance” and Views, respectively, while the Hamilton soundtrack is also a top-selling album. The Chainsmokers have two of the top 10 songs this year, and music fans still can’t get enough of Adele’s 25, Rihanna’s ANTI and Frank Ocean’s Blonde. The Beats 1 team will be counting down the biggest songs on the station in 2016 with a special Best of Beats 1 show on December 7. The Best of Beats 1 playlist will also be available on Apple Music and feature Christine And The Queens, Kiiara, The 1975, Kanye West, Solange, The Weeknd, DJ Khaled and more.

PJ Harvey To Embark On Long-Waited North American Tour

Following yesterday’s Best Alternative Music Album GRAMMY Award nomination for The Hope Six Demolition Project (Vagrant), PJ Harvey will embark on her most extensive North American headline tour in more than ten years.

Featuring the 10-piece band that accompanied her on this year’s four sold out and critically lauded U.S. dates, PJ Harvey’s return to North America in April of 2017 will be a full run of dates across the continent. Starting in Toronto at the storied Massey Hall on April 13, the tour includes an April 20 stop at Brooklyn Steel and a May 12 stop in Los Angeles at The Greek Theatre. A full list of tour dates can be found below.

Pre-sale tickets will be available on Thursday, December 7th. General on-sale will commence on Friday, December 8th at 10am ET with the exception of Brooklyn and San Francisco dates, which will go on sale Friday, December 16th. Denver presales start Friday, December 8th. General on sale Saturday, December 9th.

Who’s sold more CDs than any other artist in 2016? No, it’s not Adele. Or Drake. Or The Weeknd: it’s Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, who’s sold more than 1.25 million CDs as part of what’s been called the largest box set of all time: a 200-disc collection of the composer’s complete works.

Mozart 225: The New Complete Edition has shifted 1.25 million total CDs in the five weeks since its Oct. 28 release, according to Universal Music Group. The collection is formidable in every sense. It comprises a whopping 200 CDs, presenting every work by the classical great; features the talents of 600 world-class soloists and 60 orchestras, and plays for a total of 240 hours (not to mention the many hours of additional reading materials bundled in). Crunch the numbers and that’s upwards of 6,250 sold box sets.

Sales of vinyl outstripped digital album downloads last week for the first time ever

Vinyl’s triumph was announced by figures provided by the Entertainment Retailers Association (ERA), which revealed that more money had been spent on vinyl albums than on digital albums downloads last week.

As The Vinyl Factory reports, ERA have provided figures that show that, in week 48 of 2016, £2.4m was spent on vinyl, while only £2.1m was spent on the digital download of albums. The figures significantly contrast with the statistics that were recorded at this time last year, when only £1.2m was spent on vinyl albums while digital downloads racked up an eye-watering £4.4m worth of sales.

The ERA have suggested the swing in sales compared to last year could be attributed to factors such as the recent Record Store Day Black Friday, the increasing popularity of vinyl as a Christmas gift, and the greater number of retailers – which now includes supermarkets such as Sainsbury’s and Tesco – who now stock vinyl.

Research finds MP3s make your music sound sadder

New research has found that listening to music in low-quality digital formats can dampened its emotional impact.

According to a study by the Audio Engineering Library, MP3s can have a distinct effect on the “timbral and emotional characteristics” of the instruments involved.

Researchers compared responses to compressed and uncompressed music over ten emotional categories at several bit rates.

The results showed that MP3 compression tended to strengthen neutral and negative emotional characteristics of a song, which the study defines as “mysterious, shy, scary and sad”.

On the other hand, MP3s can dull positive emotional characteristics, such as “happy, romantic or calm”. However, they had no effect on songs that were categorised as “angry”.

Loton Corp’s LiveXLive subsidiary has entered into an agreement with KAOS Connect and Screenvision Media to exhibit its “Best of the Fest” music festival series, showcasing LiveXLive’s produced and curated content from leading music artists and labels. “Best of the Fest” will roll-out in 2017 to select theaters within Screenvision Media’s robust network of more than 14,300 screens.
