Roger Daltrey: The Who Wouldn’t Exist Without Skiffle

0

Roger Daltry, The Who singer speaking in a recent edition of MOJO ’60s explains that though they may have been worlds apart in terms of volume, the band owe their existence to the skiffle explosion.

“Every young person could make music – even people with no melody in them, no sense of pitch – could make some kind of noise with a washboard, a tea chest and a broomstick for a bass,” he explains of the original DIY genre in Volume 4 of our decade-spanning spin-off magazine.

“Music became very communal and every street would have a skiffle group. The original nucleus of The Who grew out of Percy Road in Shepherd’s Bush. We used to pretend we were Johnny Kidd And The Pirates. We were a substitute for other guys. That was our purpose. They couldn’t see the real deal but they’d come and see us doing it.”

If You Wanted To Wear Contact Lenses Back In 1948, You Wouldn’t Want To Wear Contact Lenses

0

Fashion and comfort aren’t in play here if you wanted to wear contact lenses back in 1948. This video shows several shots show the complete process of making the contact lenses. Australia’s only contact lens maker, Penrhyn Thomas, inserts an impression cup containing material for taking a cast of the eyeball over the woman’s eye (which has been anaesthetised). The substance sets (looks awful, when the woman moves her eyeball the whole cup moves too!) and the cup and cast are removed. Several shots of Penrhyn moulding the lens from the cast and the plastic lens being ground, checked and buffed.

He then fits it into the woman’s eye, using a buffer solution, and dabs the eye with a towel. He checks they are in the correct position. Yikes.

Capping the Hot 100’s top 10, Ariana Grande soars in at No. 10 with “Dangerous Woman.” The steamy song launches at No. 2 on Digital Songs (118,000, following its March 10 arrival) and No. 15 on Streaming Songs (9 million, with nearly half from Spotify clicks), while adding 24 million airplay impressions. The song is Grande’s seventh Hot 100 top 10 (and fifth to debut in the top 10) and the title track and lead single from her third full-length studio album, due May 20. She performed it (and fellow album track “Be Alright”) on NBC’s Saturday Night Live, which she hosted, March 12.

The arrival of “Woman” is additionally historic for Grande: she is the first artist in the chart’s 57-year history to debut in the top 10 with the lead single from each of her first three albums. Her debut single, “The Way” (featuring Mac Miller), began at No. 10 on April 13, 2013, introducing her first LP (and first Billboard 200 No. 1) Yours Truly. (The song would peak at No. 9.) On May 17, 2014, “Problem” (featuring Iggy Azalea) soared in at No. 3 (before peaking at a career-best No. 2), setting the stage for the No. 1 Billboard 200 entrance of My Everything.

Multi-platinum rock group The Go-Go’s will embark on their farewell tour this summer to commemorate a groundbreaking thirty-eight years in the music industry. Members Charlotte Caffey, Belinda Carlisle, Gina Schock and Jane Wiedlin perform their timeless catalog as part of The Go-Go’s Farewell Tour with special guests, rock duo Best Coast and singer-songwriter Kaya Stewart, at Massey Hall on Tuesday, August 16.

“After a 38 year run, we are gearing up for one last blast of a summer tour,” says the band about the farewell trek. “We feel so lucky and so grateful to have had the incredible support of our fans for so long. We can’t wait to get out on the road and give the people what they want: some loud fast music and a great party!”

The legendary rock group made history as the first – and to date only – all-female band that both wrote their own songs and played their own instruments to ever top the Billboard charts. The Go-Go’s rose to fame in the wake of their 1981 debut album, Beauty and the Beat, which spent six weeks at #1 on the Billboard charts and achieved Platinum status in Canada, making it one of the most successful debut albums of all time. In 1982, The Go-Go’s were nominated for a Grammy Award for Best New Artist and released their sophomore album, Vacation, which was certified Gold in the US and spawned another top-ten hit with the title track. In 2011, the trailblazing band was honored with a star on the world-famous Hollywood Walk of Fame.
