Even Star Wars’ Imperial Stormtroopers Need Love

0

Bara Heiða is a folk/pop band that hails from Reykjavik, Iceland, and their new music video, Stormtrooper, follows a (what else?) Imperial stormtrooper who is left behind in a strange world and finds love.

The band describes the song as a metaphorical one for opposites attracting:

The background story of the lyrics is that of a Stormtrooper getting deserted on an unknown planet. There he meets a woman and they fall in love. Later, he has to return to battle and she is left behind, with their child.

The song is a metaphor for two people who are fundamentally different. One being idealistic and of the sky while the other is practical and of the land and how they can only be together for a short while, before drifting apart.

There’s hope for all of us.

A Playlist Of Every Song That Influenced Elvis Costello, According To His Memoir

0

Even when a song may not say exactly what he needs it to, music is still his preferred means of communication; which is to say, Elvis Costello’s knowledge is nerdishly prodigious. He stumps George Jones with one of the Possum’s own deep cuts, and he tries to do the same with Bob Dylan — but nobody out-alludes that guy. With the obsession of a dilettante or possibly a savant, Costello jumps around from country and old-time folk to punk and reggae, from New Orleans jazz to Brill Building pop, from the classical compositions of the Brodsky Quartet to the erudite melodies of Burt Bacharach.

There are nearly 400 songs Costello name-checks as influences within the pages of his memoir, Unfaithful Music & Disappearing Ink, and hundreds more he refers to in passing. Of those 400, Vulture culled together a 300-song playlist that is by no means complete, due in large par to, at the time, Spotify’s scarcity of Beatles, Bacharach, and Neil Young albums. (The Fab Four are the most cited artist in the book, with 22 songs — from “Please Please Me” to “Let It Be” — admired by Costello.)

Video: Meet The Woman Who Created Your Favorite Muppets

0

In 1970, a meeting took place that changed Muppets history. Bonnie Erickson, a young costumer, met with Jim Henson, who was looking for someone to fashion the costumes for The Frog Prince. Erickson got the job, and went on to create some of the most famous Muppets, including Miss Piggy and Statler & Waldorf.

Currently a trustee at the Jim Henson Legacy, she lives with her husband Wayde in their New York City home of forty years, where the two are still creating magic under their company Harrison / Erickson, Inc. Together, they have designed mascots (from the Phillie Phanatic to the underrated Dandy), stuffed animals, and even the toys for Where The Wild Things Are.

Gothamist met with her at her home recently—which is filled with art and creations from her past and present, as well as one room that’s built out to be a partial replica of her childhood home, complete with a front porch and American flag—”when Bush was President,” she told us, “We had the flag upside down. And when he left in the helicopter, I came in with champagne and turned it right side up.”

Her life, which includes tales of riding from her apartment Uptown down to the Village on the back of a Hell’s Angels’ hog, is worthy of a full length documentary. Below, an introduction:

We all work hard and most of us can appreciate some escapism, whether it’s through some Netflix-binging or just daydreaming.

Harlequin thinks it can help women make the most of their breaks from a busy day with their romance novels.

The new “Romance When You Need It” campaign from BBDO Toronto includes a playful video spot featuring a group of female co-workers celebrating their break from a hard day’s work by bringing their fantasy characters to life.

Kim Gordon on Grimes, Spice Girls, and Caitlyn Jenner

Kim Gordon and Bret Easton Ellis discuss the 2015 MTV Video Music Awards, Girl in a Band, the nihilism of Lana Del Rey, returning to Los Angeles after living in New York City, and the success of Sonic Youth.

“We didn’t really have expectations about being hugely commercial, and I don’t think ever. And I think everyone else did after Nirvana broke. People would say oh don’t you think your record is going to be as big and we’d be like, “No are you crazy? What’s your logic?””

Nelly Furtado To Be Honoured with Allan Slaight Humanitarian Spirit Award at Canadian Music Week 2016

0

Canadian Music Week is pleased to announce Nelly Furtado as the 2016 recipient of theAllan Slaight Humanitarian Spirit Award. The award, bestowed to outstanding Canadian artists, is in recognition of their contributions to social activism and support of humanitarian causes.

Celebrating Furtado’s extensive work with Free The Children and participation in We Day, the award will be presented at the Canadian Music & Broadcast Industry Awards gala to be held on Thursday May 5 at The Grand Ballroom of the Sheraton Centre in Toronto during Canadian Music Week 2016. “I am greatly honored to be recognized by the Slaight Family with this award and thrilled to join the ranks of a list of musical peers whom I greatly admire,” states Furtado.

Furtado travelled to Kenya with Free The Children in 2011. There, she met the 40 students at the first all-girls secondary school, Kisaruni, and other young women who hoped for a spot in the future. When she returned home, the new Free The Children Ambassador participated in her first We Day in Waterloo, Ont. and has been a regular ever since. During her last album, 2012’s The Spirit Indestructible, the singer raised money for a second girls high school in the community called Oleleshwa, and matched every dollar. Furtado has been back to Kenya with Free The Children three more times, including this past Christmas for the first graduation ceremony. She’ll travel there again at the end of this year – and for a long time to come.

“Not only has Nelly’s music brought joy to people all over the world, but through her many trips with Free The Children and generous financial donations, she has had a lasting impact on young women in rural Kenya who would otherwise not have an opportunity to go to high school. She has also boosted enthusiasm for Free The Children by telling her inspirational stories at many We Day events for students across the country. My father and I are honoured to make Nelly the latest recipient of the Allan Slaight Humanitarian Award. She is truly deserving,” says Gary Slaight, President and CEO, Slaight Communications.

Furtado, the Canadian-born singer, songwriter, actress, and philanthropist, who is of Portuguese descent, has enjoyed a vibrant and successful career as a multi-language superstar. By embracing different cultures and genres, she has helped define musical diversity for a new generation ever since unleashing her debut, 2000’s double-platinum Whoa, Nelly!, which spawned “I’m Like A Bird,” followed by 2003’s gold Folklore, whose “Forca” became the official anthem of the 2004 European Cup Football Championship.

In 2009, she released her first Spanish-language album, the Latin Grammy Award-winning Mi Plan, which reached No. 1 on the U.S. Latin Billboard chart and swept Canada’s Juno awards with five wins including Album of the Year. In total, Furtado has sold more than 16 million albums and 18 million singles worldwide. She has racked up many international honors, including a Grammy Award, a BRIT Award, a Latin Grammy Award, World Music Award and 10 Juno awards.
