Peter Gabriel first came to international prominence with the success of Genesis, a band that he co-founded while still at school. Since leaving Genesis in 1975, his recording career has included eleven studio albums, film soundtracks for Alan Parker’s ‘Birdy’, Martin Scorsese’s ‘The Last Temptation of Christ’ and Philip Noyce’s ‘Rabbit Proof Fence’ as well as numerous live albums. His wider musical career has included multiple Grammy Awards, the creation of the Real World Records label, and in 1980 the creation of WOMAD, the festival that has launched the careers of many world music artists and has to date presented over 170 festivals in 30 countries.

Peter Gabriel co-founded the human rights organization WITNESS (Witness.org) in 1992, the organization that pioneers the use of cameras and technology in human rights campaigning, and in 2007, alongside Sir Richard Branson, he founded The Elders (theelders.org) which was launched by Nelson Mandela.  In 2006, Peter Gabriel was awarded the prestigious Man of Peace title by The Nobel Peace Laureates and in 2008 was also included in the Time 100 list. He has been inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame twice. He remains engaged in a wide variety of tech-based businesses throughout a variety of creative industries.

Composer, singer, actor, author, and activist – Sting was born in Newcastle, England before moving to London in 1977 to form The Police with Stewart Copeland and Andy Summers. The band released five studio albums, earned six Grammy Awards and two Brits, and was inducted into The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2003.  Since 1989, Sting has released fourteen solo albums and received an additional 10 Grammy Awards, two Brits, a Golden Globe, an Emmy, three Oscar nominations, Billboard Magazine’s Century Award, and MusiCares 2004 Person of the Year. Also a member of the Songwriters Hall of Fame, he received the Kennedy Center Honors in December of 2014. Throughout his enduring career, he has sold close to 100 million albums from his combined work with The Police and as a solo artist.

The Last Ship, his latest release, is inspired by his memories of the shipbuilding community of Wallsend in the North East of England where he was born and raised. A play of the same name, with music and lyrics by Sting, debuted on Broadway in October, 2014 and was heralded by the Associated Press as “thrilling with powerful performances, outstanding songs, and real heart.”  Sting received a Tony Award nomination for Best Original Score. He has appeared in more than 15 films and authored two books, including The New York Times best-selling memoir, Broken Music. His support for human rights organizations mirrors his art in its universal outreach. Along with wife Trudie Styler, Sting founded the Rainforest Fund in 1989 to protect both the world’s rainforests and the indigenous people living there.

12-year-old jazz pianist Joey Alexander makes a big chart splash thanks to his profile on CBS’ 60 Minutes (Jan. 3). His My Favorite Things album re-enters chart Billboard 200 at No. 59 (a new peak) with 9,000 sold in pure album sales — up by 3,563 percent. My Favorite Things also gives Alexander his first No. 1 on both the Jazz Albums and Traditional Jazz Albums charts. It flies 22-1 on the former, and re-enters at No. 1 on the latter. Alexander also dots the Jazz Digital Songs chart, as he places five cuts on the 25-position list, including his album’s title cut at No. 6 (1,000 downloads sold; up 1,722 percent).

I’ve Got The Music In Me: Your Favorite Artists Mashed Up In One Great Music Video

0

How much fun is it being a rock star? This much fun! Klara Tavakoli Goesche put together an amazing music video featuring clips of the biggest musical acts of the past, set the the 1974 song I’ve Got the Music in Me by Kiki Dee. We’re still riding on the giddy motion these artists set off, not just the moment the performers were famous, but the aftershock.

I began this video project in December 2015. Sadly, we’ve lost two of the legends featured since I started. So this is now dedicated to David Bowie and Lemmy Kilmister. This video is a celebration of when musical artistry was all about the music. I also wanted to showcase this great song by Kiki Dee, the first white, female, ‘blue-eyed soul singer’ from the UK accepted by a Motown label. Finally, I made this in anticipation of the forthcoming HBO show ‘Vinyl’. Turn it up.

David Bowie Performs “The Man Who Sold The World” On Saturday Night Live, 1979

0

Saturday Night Live has released a clip from a December 1979 episode in which a beautifully made-up David Bowie performed a theatrical version of his song The Man Who Sold the World, the title track of his third album. That’s Klaus Nomi and Joey Arias singing backup for him. Bowie and band were introduced by guest host, the former President of the United States (at least on The West Wing), Martin Sheen.

Fun Fact: In the wake of Nirvana’s cover on their MTV Unplugged in New York performance and release, Bowie, according to The Complete David Bowie book, bemoaned the fact that when he performed the number himself he would encounter “kids that come up afterwards and say, ‘It’s cool you’re doing a Nirvana song.’ And I think, ‘Fuck you, you little tosser!'”

Love “Once” and “Begin Again”? You’re going to love this film inspired by the same writer/director – “Sing Street”

0

SING STREET takes us back to 1980s Dublin seen through the eyes of a 14-year-old boy named Conor (Ferdia Walsh-Peelo) who is looking for a break from a home strained by his parents’ relationship and money troubles, while trying to adjust to his new inner-city public school where the kids are rough and the teachers are rougher. He finds a glimmer of hope in the mysterious, über-cool and beautiful Raphina (Lucy Boynton), and with the aim of winning her heart he invites her to star in his band’s music videos. There’s only one problem: he’s not part of a band…yet. She agrees, and now Conor must deliver what he’s promised – calling himself “Cosmo” and immersing himself in the vibrant rock music trends of the decade, he forms a band with a few lads, and the group pours their heart into writing lyrics and shooting videos. Inspired by writer/director John Carney’s (ONCE, BEGIN AGAIN) life and love for music, SING STREET shows us a world where music has the power to take us away from the turmoil of everyday life and transform us into something greater.
