Hungry Heart: Bruce Springsteen Expands “The River” For Box Set
Columbia Records will release Bruce Springsteen’s ‘The Ties That Bind: The River Collection’ on December 4th. A comprehensive look at ‘The River’ era, the set contains 52 tracks on 4 CDs with a wealth of unreleased material, and 4 hours of never-before-seen video on 3 DVDs. It is comprised of the original ‘The River’ double album; the first official release of ‘The River: Single Album;’ a CD of 1979/80 studio outtakes; a two-DVD film of never-released, newly edited multi-camera footage from Springsteen’s famed 1980 show in Tempe, AZ, long rumored but never-before-seen; rare tour rehearsal footage; a brand new documentary “The Ties That Bind” about ‘The River;’ and a coffee table book of 200 rare or previously unseen photos and memorabilia with a new essay by Mikal Gilmore.
‘The River,’ Springsteen’s fifth album, was released on October 17, 1980 as a double album and reached #1 on the U.S. Billboard 200 chart. In his notes, Gilmore calls ‘The River’ Springsteen’s “pivotal album—[the] hinge between the ambitious commotions that had preceded it and the more succinct musical riots, and sometimes terrifying storytelling, that followed.”
‘The River: Single Album’ is the 10-track album that Springsteen recorded in 1979 as a follow up to 1978’s ‘Darkness On The Edge Of Town’ but never released. “The songs lacked the kind of unity and conceptual intensity I liked my music to have. So we went back in the studio,” he wrote in the lyrics/photo book “Songs.” The early sessions marked the beginning of a prolific 18-month long journey of writing and recording. Seven of the 10 titles on ‘The River: Single Album’ eventually appeared on ‘The River,’ some with alternate lyrics and arrangements, with outtakes like “Cindy” and a rockabilly version of “You Can Look (But You Better Not Touch)” never released. Now for the first time ‘The River: Single Album’ will be officially available.
The fourth CD on the box set is ‘The River: Outtakes,’ which spans the entire ‘The River’ sessions in 1979 and 1980 and illustrate the depth and variety of Springsteen’s work during this period. Eleven songs are rarities that have never been released before, and for the most part are completely unheard and unknown even to fans, who have long considered Springsteen’s outtakes to be treasured secrets. The eleven unheard outtakes (“Record One”) were mixed by Bob Clearmountain and mastered by Bob Ludwig. Eleven additional outtakes (“Record Two”) are collected from the ‘Tracks’ box and ‘Essentials’ so as to put them in one place.

“The Ties That Bind” is a brand new 60-minute documentary produced and directed by Zimny that features an intimate interview with Springsteen as he reflects on the tumultuous, extended period writing and recording ‘The River.’ The film transitions between Springsteen telling the stories behind the music — and illustrating them with solo acoustic guitar performances — interspersed with period concert footage and rare photos of Bruce and the band in and out of the studio.
The final video component is “Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band: The River Tour, Tempe 1980,” a new film produced from footage professionally filmed in 1980 using four cameras and recorded in multitrack audio. The film features 24 songs — 2 hours, 40 minutes — on 2 DVDs from Springsteen’s November 5, 1980 concert at Arizona State University in Tempe, AZ. Widely regarded as one of Springsteen’s finest performances, this intense show features early live versions of over half of ‘The River’ songs. Also included is 20 minutes of footage from the late September, 1980 River Tour rehearsals held in Lititz, PA, showing Springsteen and The E Street Band working through live arrangements of what was then unreleased material from the upcoming album. The film was recently edited by frequent Springsteen collaborator and Grammy and Emmy-winning filmmaker Thom Zimny, and the audio was mixed in Stereo & 5.1 surround by Bob Clearmountain from the original multitrack recordings and mastered by Bob Ludwig.
‘The Ties That Bind: The River Collection’ is packaged in a 10″ x 12″ box with a hardcover 148-page coffee table book containing 200 studio and live photographs — most of which have never been seen before — plus pages from Springsteen’s notebooks, single covers, images and outtakes from the original album package, and other memorabilia documenting the album. Liner notes include a new essay from journalist Mikal Gilmore, the original Rolling Stone album review from 1980, and Springsteen’s updated comments about the album from the 1998 “Songs” book.
‘The Ties That Bind: The River Collection’ is available for pre-order at Amazon and iTunes.

American Express Foundation makes $1.25 Million Donation to Massey Hall Revitalization Project
Today American Express Canada proudly announces that the American Express Foundation is contributing $1.25 million to the revitalization of Toronto’s iconic music venue, Massey Hall.
The revitalization marks an important chapter in the story of this unique Canadian cultural institution. Massey Hall is not only a national historic site, it’s a place where music history is made. Over the past 120 years it has hosted some of the world’s most renowned artists, from Bob Dylan and Adele to Aretha Franklin and B.B. King, along with a host of Canadian talent such as Gordon Lightfoot, RUSH, Glenn Gould and Neil Young.
“This is about more than preserving a historic building. It’s also about supporting Toronto’s rich cultural legacy and ensuring thatMassey continues to hold a special place among those who love and appreciate music for generations to come,” says David Barnes, Vice President of Advertising and Communications at American Express Canada.
“We’re honoured to accept this donation from the American Express Foundation. Ultimately, the revitalization project will enhance artist and audience experiences in the Hall for years to come. Our goal is to retain all of the ambience and warmth that fans and artists have come to love of the existing building, and that comprises so much of its charm, while bringing the facilities up to today’s standards with a new addition to the south of the building” says Deane Cameron, President & CEO, The Corporation of Massey Hall and Roy Thomson Hall.
The venue has not had a significant enhancement in more than 50 years, and over the next 6 years the project will help to rejuvenate the building’s interior and exterior. The American Express Foundation donation is part of a major capital campaign to fund improvements to the existing Hall. A new addition will include lobby space, additional patron amenities, elevator access to the upper levels, up-to-date backstage production and operational facilities, plus rooms for arts education, media and artist development, reception and donor space, and more.
The American Express Foundation supports projects around the world that help to save and sustain historic places – preserving them for future use and protecting them for all to enjoy.
Alongside the donation, American Express is also proud to continue its partnership with both Massey Hall and Roy Thomson Hall as part of the company’s entertainment access benefits which includes the Front Of The Line® advanced and reserved ticket program, offering Cardmembers access to concerts and events at both venues. Additionally, American Express Cardmembers receive express service at the American Express Line in Centuries Lounge at Massey Hall and have access to the American Express Lounge at Roy Thomson Hall. JAZZ.FM91 Presents Scott Freiman’s Say The Word: Deconstructing The Beatles’ Rubber Soul
In celebration of the 50th Anniversary of The Beatles’ Rubber Soul album, JAZZ.FM91 presents Scott Freiman’s Say the Word: Deconstructing Rubber Soul – November 3rd at the TIFF Bell Lightbox.
In October 1965, the Beatles were faced with an impossible task – produce a new album of original music for a Christmas release. Within one month, the Beatles had emerged with what many consider to be one of their greatest albums – Rubber Soul. They even had time to create a double A-side single, “We Can Work It Out” backed by “Day Tripper”. Both sides of the single, as well as the album, hit number one on the charts.
In Say The Word: Deconstructing Rubber Soul, Scott Freiman walks Beatles fans young and old through the creation of Rubber Soul with rare audio and video from the studio and the stage. Listen as classic tracks like “Norwegian Wood”, “In My Life”, and “Nowhere Man.”
Musicians and non-musicians, Beatles fanatics and casual listeners will all enjoy Beatles expert and renowned composer/producer Scott Freiman’s presentation. You will never listen to the Beatles or any other music the same way again.
Scott Freiman combines his knowledge of the Beatles with a career as a composer, producer, and educator to deliver unique lectures about the music of the Beatles. He is the creator of Deconstructing The Beatles, a series of multimedia presentations about the composition and production techniques of the Fab Four. Mr. Freiman has presented his lectures at theaters nationwide and has spoken about the Beatles at colleges, universities, and corporations, such as Pixar, Google, and Facebook. This Fall, Mr. Freiman will be teaching a semester course on “The Beatles In The Studio” at Yale University.
Deconstructing The Beatles presentations are truly unique. Part film, part concert, part lecture. For a sneak peek here is a video for what you can expect on November 3rd:

Ottawa To Host The 2017 JUNO Awards
The JUNO Awards mark a historic return to the nation’s capital as The Canadian Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences (CARAS) and broadcast partner CTV announced today that Ottawa will host The 2017 JUNO Awards and JUNO Week celebrations, March 27 – April 2, 2017. The 46th annual JUNO Awards, to be broadcast on CTV, will take place at the Canadian Tire Centre on Sunday, April 2, 2017.
JUNO Week 2017 will be one of the major events in Ottawa as the Capital celebrates Canada’s 150th anniversary with a yearlong series of special events, exhibits and immersive experiences. The JUNO Awards are returning to Ottawa after the outstanding success of the 2012 JUNO Awards, and this will be the city’s third time hosting Canada’s Music Awards.
“As Ottawa 2017 commemorates Canada’s incredible heritage and values, the JUNO Awards will pay tribute to this important milestone,” said Allan Reid, President & CEO, CARAS/The JUNO Awards & MusiCounts. “The Capital’s devoted music fans are proudly supportive of both their local and the national music scene, making Ottawa the perfect home for the JUNO Awards in 2017.”
Mayor Jim Watson responded to the announcement with a challenge for the local arts and music community to begin planning an unprecedented week of music in the Capital. “We have so much talent in this city and we want to share your gifts, with Canada and the world,” said the Mayor. “Yes, we want to fill every venue,” he added, “but we also want workshops, clinics and classroom programming. This is your chance to inspire the next generation of Canadian artists and contribute to the legacy of Canada’s 150th anniversary celebrations.”
“The 2017 JUNO Awards on CTV will be a special one as we broadcast from the nation’s capital during Canada’s sesquicentennial year,” said Mike Cosentino, Senior Vice-President, Programming, CTV Networks and CraveTV. “We look forward to inviting the entire country to celebrate with us in Ottawa.”
“Surely there is no better way to mark Canada’s 150th anniversary than honouring the best in Canadian music, this country’s greatest cultural export,” said Randy Lennox, President, Entertainment Production and Broadcasting, Bell Media.
“From kitchen parties to concert halls, music gives a voice to our culture and inspires our celebrations,” said Guy Laflamme, Executive Director of the Ottawa 2017 Bureau. “This is why we are so proud to host the JUNO Awards and present it as one of our Signature Events for 2017. We will be announcing many more events of this caliber in the weeks and months to come, as we gear up for a once-in-a-lifetime, yearlong celebration of Canada’s 150th, right here in the Capital.”
Ottawa 2017 will feature a variety of cultural, musical and sporting events and experiences across the city’s major institutions, landmarks and neighborhoods. Ottawa-Gatineau is home to major attractions like the National Arts Centre, the Canadian War Museum and the Canadian Museum of History, as well professional sports teams like the NHL’s Ottawa Senators and the CFL’s Ottawa RedBlacks. While official programing for Ottawa 2017 is yet to be announced, a number of key events have already been confirmed for Ottawa to mark Canada’s 150th year, including: Tim Hortons Roar of the Rings curling championship, the Canadian Track and Field Championships and the Canadian Videogame Awards.
When Ottawa welcomed the JUNO Awards in 2012, William Shatner hosted, Blue Rodeo was inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame and Feist was the big winner, taking home three awards, including Artist of the Year and Adult Alternative Album of the Year.
From 2007 to 2015 the JUNO Awards have created a total economic impact of almost $99 million, including $11 million for the 2012 JUNO Awards in Ottawa, $14 million for the 2011 JUNO Awards in Toronto, and $10 million for the 2015 JUNO Awards in Hamilton.
Since CTV first partnered with CARAS in 2002, the JUNO Awards have travelled city to city across Canada starting in St. John’s (and again in 2010), followed by Ottawa (2003 and 2012), Edmonton (2004), Winnipeg (2005 and 2014), Halifax (2006), Saskatoon (2007), Vancouver (2009), Toronto (2011), Regina (2013), Hamilton (2015) and, after a memorable visit in 2008, will return to Calgary this year.
