Glasper is not only the opening-night artist but also a creative ambassador whose presence will help shape the culture of Blue Note Los Angeles.

Upcoming performances and residencies include Andra Day, Killer Mike, Ben Folds, Charlie Puth, Esperanza Spalding, Branford Marsalis, GoldLink, Alex Isley, Tank and the Bangas, Ravi Coltrane, Mayer Hawthorne, Charles Lloyd, The Soul Rebels with special guest Too $hort, and hometown heroes Kamasi Washington, Terrace Martin featuring Kenyon Dixon, 1500 or Nothin’, The Free Nationals, and James Fauntleroy, among many others. See the full schedule below. All shows are on sale now; more information is available here.

I’m honored to partner with Blue Note and open the doors to what will be a significant cultural intersection for the Los Angeles community. L.A. has always been a second home to me, and I can’t wait to bring its culture to the Blue Note,” Robert Glasper said in a statement.

Blue Note LA will focus on curated, consistent, artist-driven programming delivered in the intimate Blue Note Jazz Club vibe that people love. Blue Note New York has a uniquely New York energy; for Blue Note LA, it’s essential to honor what makes this city’s creative spirit so distinctive. We embrace collaboration and those spontaneous moments that make live music special. We’re grateful to all the artists and their teams who are part of this opening season—they’re helping set the tone for Blue Note LA,” says Alex Kurland, Director of Programming at Blue Note Entertainment Group.

Designed specifically for Los Angeles, the new venue will pair an intimate atmosphere with the hallmarks of its New York counterpart: world-class performances from celebrated icons, rising stars, and genre-defying collaborations that reflect jazz’s ongoing evolution and influence. Each artist will perform two shows nightly, at 7:00 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. Designed by the acclaimed Legeard Studio, the space blends mid-century elegance with the raw energy of classic jazz.

Located at 6372 Sunset Boulevard (at Ivar Avenue) in Hollywood, the venue features two performance spaces: a main showroom with a 200-person capacity and a secondary “B-Side” room with a 100-person capacity (programming to be announced). A full-service kitchen and beverage program will be open for weekend brunch and nightly dinner. The menu, crafted by Chef Asaf Maoz of L.A.’s Carmel, showcases bold, internationally inspired flavors, while the cocktail list offers sophisticated riffs on jazz-era classics designed to complement the room’s energy.
About Blue Note Jazz Club

Since opening in New York City in 1981, Blue Note Jazz Club has become one of the world’s premier live-music venues. While jazz is at its core, Blue Note spotlights contemporary artists across a wide range of styles, backgrounds, and cultures, drawing frequent surprise appearances from superstars such as Stevie Wonder, Ed Sheeran, Dave Chappelle, Chris Rock, and more. Blue Note’s global outposts include Milan, Honolulu, Beijing, Shanghai, Tokyo, Napa, Rio de Janeiro, and São Paulo, with a London location slated for 2026.

Launched in New York in 2011, the Blue Note Jazz Festival presents a month-long celebration of jazz each June. The festival expanded to Napa in 2022 under the curation of Robert Glasper, creating a multi-day event where jazz meets hip-hop and R&B across multiple stages. Past headliners include John Legend, Nas, Mary J. Blige, Chance the Rapper, Maxwell, and Jill Scott. In 2024 the Napa festival introduced the Black Radio Experience in partnership with Glasper at the Meritage Resort; it will return in 2025. Earlier this month, Blue Note partnered with the LA Phil to present the Blue Note Jazz Festival at the Hollywood Bowl, ensuring that this beloved celebration—formerly the Playboy Jazz Festival—continues to thrive under a new banner.

10 Surprising Facts About Serge Fiori, One of Quebec’s Greatest Musical Minds

0

Serge Fiori, founder of French-Canadian rock band Harmonium, died Tuesday at the age of 73. He shaped an entire era of Quebec music with words that felt like poetry and melodies that never faded. His work with Harmonium and his solo career left a deep mark on culture, creativity, and sound itself. Here are 10 facts you may not know about the man behind some of Canada’s most beloved songs.

1. His First Stage Was a Ballroom in Little Italy
Serge Fiori got his start performing with his father’s orchestra in Montreal’s Little Italy. Surrounded by music from a young age, he stepped into the spotlight as a teenager, already thinking like a composer

2. Harmonium Started With a Play That Never Happened
He met Michel Normandeau through a friend while writing music for a play. The project fell through—but the partnership formed Harmonium, one of the most influential bands in Quebec’s history.

3. His Music Career Paused So He Could Study Meditation and Computer Science
After Harmonium disbanded, Fiori moved to Los Angeles, where he turned inward. He studied meditation, composition, and even computer science, taking a step away from the stage to explore other disciplines.

4. He Brought Harmonium’s Spirit Into His Work With Richard Séguin
In 1978, he teamed up with Richard Séguin to record Deux cents nuits à l’heure. Most of Harmonium’s musicians appeared on the album, creating a kind of spiritual continuation of the band’s work.

5. He Composed the Theme for Montreal’s Just For Laughs Festival
In 1984, Serge wrote and performed the original theme for the Just For Laughs comedy festival. His voice, known for introspection and emotion, also found a place in joy and celebration.

6. His Solo Return Came After 28 Years of Silence
After years of working behind the scenes on film scores and meditation music, Fiori returned with a self-titled solo album in 2014. It marked one of the most celebrated comebacks in Quebec music.

7. He Reimagined His Classics for Cirque Éloize
In 2018, Fiori worked with Louis-Jean Cormier on Seul ensemble, a dance and acrobatic show based on his music. The show premiered in 2019, bringing his timeless songs to life on stage in a brand new form.

8. He Was a Pioneer of Progressive Folk Rock in Canada
With Les cinq saisons (1975), Fiori and Harmonium created a concept album that fused folk, prog, and classical elements. Its 17-minute closer, “Histoires sans paroles,” helped define a new sound in Canadian music.

9. Les cinq saisons Made Rolling Stone’s List of Greatest Prog Albums
Rolling Stone ranked Harmonium’s Les cinq saisons at #36 in their list of the 50 Greatest Prog Rock Albums of All Time. It remains one of the most acclaimed transitional albums ever made in Canada.

10. His Lyrics Spoke to Quebec’s Political and Emotional Heart
Songs like “Depuis l’automne” reflected the separatist sentiments of the time, while others captured universal feelings of love, longing, and hope. His music helped soundtrack both personal and cultural awakenings.

Serge Fiori’s legacy is not just in what he sang—but in what he sparked. From ballrooms to festivals, prog rock suites to meditative chants, he followed every path with heart and honesty. His voice continues to echo, not as a memory, but as music that lives on.

Stephen Kalinich and Friends Announce Reflective New Album ‘I Love My Life’ for July 11

0

Heyday Again Records (helmed by reissue maven and counterculture author Pat Thomas) presents I Love My Life – confirmed for release on Friday July 11, a postcard from one of the last-standing poets of peace and excitation. The album, which is available for preorder here or here, is credited to Stephen J. Kalinich and Friends and produced by Milo Binder, and Willie Aron (Thee Holy Brothers, The Third Mind) – marks a stylistic departure from Kalinich’s earlier works in that it eschews the format of a collection of poems with accompanying scores in favor of songs that Kalinich and Binder co-wrote that alternate with a series of spoken-word performances that Kalinich improvised online during the global pandemic.

“Stevie (Kalinich) and I decided to have weekly phone sessions that took place every Sunday just before the pandemic shut down the world,” said Milo Binder. “When we had enough songs, we decided to record them. I wanted to do something different with Stevie this time around; his filmed posts on social media were sincere and soulful, they addressed his life as well as the world in its current state; it seemed that having them transcribed for audio to follow each song was a unique and timely way to present the album to the world.”

Binder and Kalinich enlisted his longtime friend and collaborator Aron – who had accompanied Kalinich in concert many times and produced Binder’s critically acclaimed album The Unspeakable Milo Binder, also released on Heyday Again – to co-produce the album with them. “Willie is my closest friend and the person whom I have relied upon the most to fulfill whatever musical obsessions pop into my head; he was a perfect fit for this record.”

Kalinich – who first garnered acclaim for writing the lyrics for “Little Bird” and “Be Still” on The Beach Boys’ understated classic album from 1968, Friends – has been unwavering in his fervent desire for the arrival of peace on earth; he attests, “I have been writing poems about world peace well before the Sixties’ peace movement; this has been a constant theme in my life for decades.” After all, this is the same artist who titled his debut album, A World Of Peace Must Come, done in collaboration with Brian Wilson in 1969. The themes that he explores on I Love My Life – homelessness, aging, gratitude, narcissism, and other topics – are universal, hard-hitting, and passionate, delivered with a heart full of soul, yet imbued with the spirit of grace and humility that has marked all of his previous works.

I Love My Life features vocal and instrumental contributions by Randell Kirsch (Beach Boys, Jan & Dean), LuAnn Olson, Rob Bonfiglio (Wilson Phillips), and other musicians and singers. The album was recorded at Pasadena’s The Pie Studios and engineered by Jeff Peters, who has worked with the Beach Boys collectively and individually for over forty years.

Kalinich sums up his feelings about the album thusly: “The recording of this album took place during a vulnerable time in our world. But working with Milo and Willie and the other remarkable musicians was such a joyful, satisfying experience, it gave me the energy and confidence to persevere. I am immensely proud of this album, and I’m hopeful that it touches the hearts of those who listen to it.”

TD Coliseum Set To Open In Hamilton This Year

amilton, Ontario is getting a reimagined music-first venue for premium concerts, sports, and entertainment in the heart of downtown, and it’s called TD Coliseum.

On Wednesday, TD announced a multi-year naming rights sponsorship to reinvent Hamilton Arena, as part of a multi-million-dollar revamping led by Oak View Group (OVG), a worldclass leader in live venue development.

Slated to open in late 2025, TD Coliseum will be designed to deliver a premium experience for concerts, sporting events, family entertainment, trade shows, and community events.

Some of the performers already confirmed for TD Coliseum include Andrea Bocelli on December 9, Brad Paisley on December 12, and the 55th Annual JUNO Awards broadcast, sponsored by TD, live on CBC on March 29, 2026.

“We are proud to take part in the revitalization of this iconic landmark,” said Raymond Chun, Group President and CEO, TD Bank Group.

“By securing the naming rights to TD Coliseum, we are not just investing in bricks and mortar – we’re investing in the heart of the Hamilton community. TD Coliseum will be a catalyst for community growth and an inclusive space that brings people together. It’s an honour to be part of that vision.”

OVG is developing TD Coliseum in an effort to turn the 18,000 seat venue into a premier entertainment facility with a reimagined façade, premium seating, enhanced acoustics to amplify the listening experience, improved sightlines, next generation touchless and self-serve technologies for food and beverage purchases to minimize transaction times, and upgraded concourses and concession areas.

“This sponsorship goes far beyond naming rights — it reflects a shared commitment to delivering world-class experiences and making a lasting impact where it matters most: in the heart of the communities we serve,” said Tim Leiweke, Chairman and CEO, Oak View Group.

“We’re proud to join forces on this transformative project and to welcome TD as the official naming rights sponsor of this storied venue. This milestone represents more than a financial investment — it’s a powerful affirmation of Hamilton’s growth, vibrancy, and bright future.”

One of the centrepieces of the new facility is The Iron Cow Public House, an in-arena, full-service restaurant and bar that is being developed by celebrity chef Matty Matheson.

According to a release, as a partner in the development, Live Nation will play a pivotal role in bringing major national and international acts to the venue, enhancing its position as a premier entertainment destination.

“TD Coliseum represents the next chapter for live music in Hamilton and the Golden Horseshoe,” said Live Nation Canada Chairman Riley O’Connor.

“With the modernization of TD Coliseum, we know artists and fans will have an unforgettable experience. Live Nation Canada is excited to bring the best in musical talent from across Canada and the world to the venue.”

OVG advises that upgrades and renovations to TD Coliseum are to include specially designed artist lounges, upgraded production facilities, electrical and lighting upgrades as well as updates to the arena’s telecommunications infrastructure, wireless network, and video/network/security systems.

OVG officials said the arena design will feature a “community-centric approach” that will include thoughtfully appointed suites, clubs and lounges that prioritize comfort, connection and conversation. New mid-level and floor level suites will feature the innovative design of combining bunker suite privacy with direct visual access to the seating bowl and the event taking place.
