Bluesy R&B Unfiltered: Tribz Bring Southern Heat & Indigenous Power With “Long Black Cadillac”

1

Sometimes the funkiest, fiercest music comes from the most unexpected places — like a garage jam during COVID that led to Long Black Cadillac, the newest release from Indigenous Bluesy Rockcollective TRIBZ. This tight four-piece unit is more than just a band — they’re a genre-melting powerhouse of lived history, raw groove, and unshakable heart. And in an industry that still doesn’t know where to place bands like them, TRIBZ is carving out their own lane — with whitewall tires and a V8 engine.

Composed of Errol Starr Francis (vocals), Earl Johnson (guitar), Donny Hill (bass), and Dave Davidson (drums), TRIBZ blends their deep roots in Six Nations and Hamilton with decades of blues, Motown, southern rock, reggae, and R&B lineage. Juno winners and nominees, Indigenous trailblazers, and genre-defiers — they’ve shared stages with everyone from King Biscuit Boy to AC/DC, Big Sugar to Blue Rodeo. But their most important legacy is the one they’re building together, now.

The single Long Black Cadillac is as much a statement of intent as it is a sonic ride. “We want the listener to come for a ride in our Long Black Cadillac,” the band says. It all started with Earl’s riff in Dave’s garage. “We jumped into the groove,” they recall. From there, the lyrics took shape — fun, soulful, and drenched in southern imagery. Lines like “Silky black stockings be lookin’ so fine, I can’t hide what’s on my mind” and “Since the day you came around, my bad boy image came crashing down” marry cheeky nostalgia with heartfelt confessions.

The track pulses with sweat and swagger, pulling listeners into a world where moss hangs from trees, stilettos click down humid streets, and love rides shotgun in a long black Cadillac. Errol’s smooth-as-honey vocals glide across the beat, channeling his Juno-winning soul/R&B chops with a gospel-tinged grit. “Errol takes us to places where Georgia peaches grow and that Southern Belle is waiting for us to get back to where we used to be,” they explain.

Each member brings their own fire:

Errol Starr Francis (Adopted ASMINTI Metis member) is best known for the Soul/R&B hit “Angel,” and delivers every note like it’s a sermon.
Earl Johnson (Six Nations Tuscarora) cut his teeth with King Biscuit Boy and Moxy, and his blues-rock attack is fierce and fluid.
Dave Davidson (Hamilton native) toured globally with The American Rogues, anchoring every beat with the depth of four decades.
Donny Hill (Six Nations Mohawk) has played with Murray Porter and the cast of RUMBLE, his fretless bass laying down seismic soul.

TRIBZ is fiercely proud of their Indigenous heritage. “Earl and Donny are Six Nations tribe members. Errol is an adopted member of ASMINTI,” they affirm. “We were all born on Turtle Island.” Their work doesn’t just entertain — it uplifts the power of Indigenous music in the present, outside the boxes and expectations.

Why are people falling in love with TRIBZ? Because their sound defies categories. Because their funk is raw, their stories are real, and their spirit is unstoppable. And it’s catching on — one groove at a time. As they put it: “Take me home, Long Black Cadillac.” This band is on the move — and the world is along for the ride.

Leon Thomas Announces ‘MUTTS DON’T HEEL’ World Tour Supporting Deluxe Album ‘HEEL’

0

GRAMMY Award-winning artist Leon Thomas announces his MUTTS DON’T HEEL World Tour, produced by Live Nation, in support of HEEL, the deluxe edition of his critically acclaimed sophomore album MUTT, out now via EZMNY/Motown Records. The North American leg kicks off October 30 iDallasTX, with stops in AustinNashvilleAtlantaBrooklynTorontoChicago, and Los Angeles. Rising R&B standout Ambré will join as support across the U.S. and Canada. Tickets will be available starting with an artist presale beginning Wednesday, June 11. Additional presales will run throughout the week ahead of the general on sale beginning FridayJune 13 at 10am local time at https://laylo.com/leonthomas/m/muttsdontheel.

In 2026, the tour heads abroad with a run of European dates including London’s Eventim ApolloParis’ Élysée MontmartreBerlin’s Huxleys Neue Welt, and Dublin’s 3Olympia Theatre. From there, Leon brings the show to Australia with performances in SydneyMelbourneBrisbaneAdelaide, and Perth.

Leon recently released MUTT Deluxe: HEEL, a natural continuation of the original, digging deeper into his sonic universe and fetching a bold blend of psychedelic R&B, rock textures, soul, and boundary-pushing production. New collaborations with Kehlani, Big Sean, and Halle elevate the project’s emotional and musical scope, as Leon hones his reflections on singlehood, connection, and self-exposure. With tightly crafted compositions and distinct creative clarity, Thomas delivers a fearless extension of his signature sound–unleashing bite where MUTT once explored duality. HEELdoesn’t just follow; it bares its teeth. Listen HERE.

MUTT Deluxe: HEEL’s focus track, “NOT FAIR,” is a sultry confessional that captures the disarming power of desire. With piano-laced production and hypnotic harmonies, Leon unpacks the emotional whiplash of loving someone who knows exactly how to pull you in and push you away – a devoted mutt chasing a love that refuses to heel. “NOT FAIR”  lingers in a space of elusive, intoxicating intimacy and mysticism.

Last month, Leon released his single “RATHER BE ALONE” featuring multi Grammy-nominated artist and actress, Halle. A hypnotic blend of R&B infused with smoky soul and rock influences, the track is a soulful reckoning about walking away when love no longer serves you, and choosing personal peace over the chaos of what once was. Unfolding like a slow-burning confession, wrapped in hazy guitar and swelling strings, Leon’s smooth vocals intertwine seamlessly with Halle’s airy delivery, adding a subtle, psychedelic touch. Listen HERE.

Leon’s boldly introspective and highly acclaimed second studio album, MUTT, continues to push the boundaries of modern R&B, blending soulful melodies with rock influences and experimental production. Amassing over 1.1 billion streams, the album’s title track originally entered the Billboard Hot 100 in February 2025 and is steadily climbing, recently jumping from #15 to #13 – marking Leon’s first Top 40 hit and his debut entry on the Hot 100. The track also reached No. 1 on Billboard’s Hot R&B Songs chart, as well as the R&B Digital Song Sales and R&B Streaming Songs charts. A high-impact remix featuring Chris Brown helped introduce the record to an even broader audience, fueling its rise to No. 1 on Billboard’s Adult R&B Airplay chart and the UK R&B Singles Chart.

Leon is currently the digital cover star of GAFFER Magazine and performed “NOT FAIR” on Jimmy Kimmel Live! on June 3. Leon has also been nominated for Best New Artist and Best Male R&B/Pop Artist and will be performing on the mainstage at the upcoming 2025 BET Awards.  “MUTT” has also been certified platinum, highlighting its widespread acclaim. Featuring collaborations with Ty Dolla $ignFreddie GibbsWale, and more, MUTT vividly explores the multifaceted nature of love – from the exhilarating rush of singlehood to the nuanced depths of emotional intimacy. Thomas weaves a narrative that fearlessly peels back layers of vulnerability, grappling with themes of fame, emotional detachment, and the quest for genuine connection.

Leon Thomas continues to redefine modern R&B, becoming an emblem of the genre and shaping its cultural landscape. MUTT has garnered widespread critical acclaim, named the #1 R&B Album of 2024 by Billboard and VIBE. It has also earned spots on several other Best of 2024 lists, further solidifying its status as one of the year’s standout releases. Billboard describes him as “one of the hottest names in R&B,” with MUTT being hailed as “the most stunning R&B album of 2024.” VIBE called it “one of the best R&B albums of the year,” while Essence celebrated it for pushing the boundaries of Black music, cementing Leon as “one of R&B’s most exciting voices.”

Leon continues to cement himself as a generational star. His NPR Tiny Desk performance went viral, peaking at #2 on YouTube and #5 on X, further iconizing his influence in music and culture. This year, he was named Billboard’s Chartbreaker and MTV PUSH’s Artist of the Month, in addition to making his TV debut on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, an appearance on The Jennifer Hudson Show, and first cover with GUAP Magazine.

Last year, Leon Thomas took MUTT on the road for his completely sold-out 13-stop North American headline tour. He also joined BLXST’s I Will Always Come Find You tour as a special guest, bringing their collaboration on the “Crash & Burn” remix from Thomas’s 2023 debut album Electric Dusk to life on stage. With back-to-back sold-out shows and high-profile tour appearances, Thomas continues to cement himself as one of R&B’s most dynamic live performers.

From a viral Tiny Desk to BET nods and Hot 100 climbs, Leon Thomas has spent the last year rewriting R&B’s rulebook. With MUTT Deluxe: HEEL, Leon pushes his momentum further–fiercer, bolder, and taking his vision even further.

Live Nation is investing in the future of live entertainment in Western Australia with the launch of Northbridge Music Hall, a purpose-built venue set to open in Summer 2026/27. With a 3,000-capacity and an expected 120 shows in its first year, the venue will elevate Perth’s live music scene and reinforce Northbridge as the city’s premier entertainment destination.

Located at 77 Francis Street, the venue will feature two performance spaces – a main room and a smaller club room – both equipped with state-of-the-art staging and production. The striking facade and elevated streetscape are designed to become a new cultural landmark.

Catering to fans of music, comedy, and theatre, Northbridge Music Hall will host a diverse lineup of local and international acts. Filling the gap for a mid-size venue, it’s poised to become a cornerstone of Perth’s vibrant arts and entertainment community and a key stop on Australian tour circuits.

The launch of this venue is projected to create at least 70 direct employment opportunities and pathways for industry professionals and generate numerous positive economic impacts for other local businesses in Perth’s hospitality and live music sectors.

In a joint statement, Alex Klos, President, and Paul Piticco, Director of Touring and Venue Development, Live Nation Australasia, said, “Northbridge Music Hall is set to become a cornerstone of Perth’s cultural landscape and a dynamic space for live entertainment. Designed to welcome both rising talent and world-class performers, it’s an investment in the city’s creative future and we’re excited to collaborate with the local arts community to create new opportunities for both performers and fans.”

Northbridge Music Hall joins Live Nation’s growing portfolio of iconic venues across Australia and New Zealand, including Festival Hall in Melbourne, Fortitude Music Hall in Brisbane, and Spark Arena in Auckland—each serving as a cornerstone for their local entertainment communities.

The record was nominated for 4 GRAMMY Awards and won 4 American Music Awards, alongside 7 Billboard Music Awards, including “Album of the Year.” Subsequent albums, Leave This Town (2009), Break The Spell (2011), and Baptized (2013) have all gone Platinum, with Cage To Rattle (2018) certified Gold. In 2021, the band released their record Dearly Beloved, with singles “World On Fire,” “Heavy Is The Crown,” and “Changes Are Coming,” all cracking the Top 10. Following yet another Top 10 success with their 2023 smash cover of Journey’s “Separate Ways (Worlds Apart)” featuring Halestorm’s Lzzy Hale, Daughtry ushered in a new sonic era with their debut Big Machine Records single, “Artificial.” The return to their rock roots scored the band their first No. 1 single in the Active Rock format, generating back-to-back No. 1s with their subsequent single, “Pieces,” and laid the groundwork for their new EP, Shock to the System (Part One), out now on all platforms. The general on sale will begin June 5th at 10 am local time.  Conan will be performing music from the anticipated forthcoming album Wishbone for the first-time on-stage, it’s a show you won’t want to miss!

Yesterday, Conan announced The Wishbone Pajama Show to his 7.4 million Instagram followers (see here), where he encouraged fans to dress up, saying “pack your sailor caps and pajama pants… pajamas encouraged but not required.”

“This Song”, written by Conan Gray and produced by Ethan Gruska (Phoebe Bridgers) marks a new era and marked evolution for the singer-songwriter who has been touted as one of the most impactful songwriters of his generation. The official music video is directed by Danica Kleinknecht (Mk.Gee) and co-stars Corey Fogelmanis.  Filmed in Texas, the single’s accompanying visual is a heartbreakingly beautiful and intimate depiction of unspoken desire.

Much like his first two albums, Conan wrote all the songs on the album from his bedroom and has reunited with Grammy Award winning longtime collaborator Dan Nigro, who executive produced Wishbone.  As a longtime collaborator, Dan Nigro has worked with Conan since 2018 including his multi-platinum selling hits “Heather” and “Maniac”.  In addition, Conan worked with Ethan GruskaNoah ConradLuka Kloser and Elvira as producers on Wishbone.

On WishboneConan Gray returns to his singer-songwriter roots after falling in love for the first time, showcasing his creative talents more than ever before.

After North-Carolina artist hemlocke springs (aka Isimeme “Naomi” Udu) posted a TikTok that featured her dancing with awkward enthusiasm to her soon-to-be hit “Girlfriend,” her profile rapidly skyrocketed. Her charming eccentricity and daydreamer persona positioned her as relatable enough for the average listener to buy into, but still strangely iconoclastic enough to be more than just another bedroom TikTok singer. She went on to release a slew of strong singles that evoked a wide range of genres: 2010s indie pop, the cyber-inflected funk of the 1980s Depeche Mode, the bouncing rhythms of Timbaland and The Neptunes, with her beloved Kate Bush at the helm as a huge musical inspiration. All of this culminated in a well-received EP ‘going … going … GONE!’ and a series of memorable music videos that developed springs’s aesthetic of lovably twee chaos, establishing fans among the likes of Chappell Roan, Doja Cat (who she supported on DC’s headline tour summer 24), Grimes, and Steve Lacy. hemlocke is currently in the studio working on her debut LP.

Nobody has tapped into the thoughts and feelings of this era quite like Conan Gray has. The Texas native has transformed into theGen Z singer-songwriter by never losing sight of where he came from, still writing songs in his bedroom, hand-drawing his art, and designing a world without comparison. 2020 saw him leave an indelible imprint on popular culture with his full-length debut LP, Kid Krow. Produced by longtime collaborator and GRAMMY® Award winner Dan Nigro, it bowed at #5 on the Billboard 200, went Platinum, and yielded a series of signature smashes, including the 4x-Platinum “Heather,” 3x-Platinum “Maniac,” and Gold-Certified “Comfort Crowd,” “The Story,” “Wish You Were Sober,” and “The Cut That Always Bleeds.” Among these staples, he entered rarified air with “Heather,” becoming “one of a handful of songs with 2 billion streams penned by one writer (Conan). With 12 billion total streams to date, Conan returned to the top of the charts with Superache [2022] and Found Heaven [2024]. Moreover, he has incited the applause of The New York TimesRolling StoneVogueGQV ManPAPERThe FADERBillboard, and NPR in addition to performing on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy FallonLate Night with Seth MeyersTODAY, and more. He has taken flight as an arena headliner, selling out hallowed venues such as Madison Square Garden. A fixture at events like the Met Gala, Conan’s just as uncompromisingly influential as a style icon, embracing a fashion-forward aesthetic like no other. Beyond thriving as a songwriter, he serves as the core creative director, shaping every layer of his vision down to creating cover art and co-directing music videos. He turns the page on his next chapter in 2025 with his fourth full-length album, Wishbone [Republic Records], beginning with the single “This Song.”

The Beat of Slot Machines: Resonance of Gambling and Music

0

By Mitch Rice

The casino floor is a symphony of sights and sounds, a carefully orchestrated environment designed to captivate and engage. Among the flashing lights and the murmur of crowds, the distinct auditory landscape of slot machines plays a crucial, often underestimated, role. The music, jingles, and sound effects that emanate from these “one-armed bandits” are not mere embellishments; they are integral components that shape the player’s experience, influencing emotions, behavior, and the overall allure of gambling. With this in mind, let’s talk about the intricate relationship between the beat of slot machines and the resonance of gambling and music.

Crafting Immersive Worlds

Modern slot games are often elaborate thematic experiences, transporting players to ancient Egypt, mythical lands, futuristic cities, or even into the worlds of popular movies and TV shows. Music and sound design are paramount in establishing and reinforcing these themes. For instance, a slot game with an ancient Egyptian theme might feature mystical melodies and the sounds of shifting sands, while a Western-themed game could incorporate guitar riffs and harmonica tunes. This thematic coherence, achieved through carefully selected audio elements, enhances player immersion, making the gaming experience more captivating and emotionally resonant. The goal is to make players feel as if they are part of the game’s narrative, deepening their engagement. If you’re looking for diverse gaming experiences with rich thematic soundscapes, you can check out gamechampions for gaming options.

The Psychology of Sound

The sounds emanating from slot machines are meticulously crafted to tap into player psychology. Upbeat, high-tempo music can evoke excitement and encourage faster play, while slower, more melodic tunes might induce relaxation and prolong gaming sessions. Winning sounds, often characterized by high-pitched, major-mode melodies with chimes and coin-clattering effects, are particularly significant. These sounds trigger the brain’s reward system, releasing dopamine and creating a sense of pleasure and achievement, even for small wins. This positive reinforcement is a powerful motivator, encouraging continued play. Conversely, losing sounds are rarely emphasized, contributing to an environment where the perception of winning is amplified.

Sound Design and the Near Miss

A significant psychological aspect of slot machine design is the “near-miss” effect – when the outcome is close to a win, such as two out of three jackpot symbols aligning. Sound design plays a crucial role in amplifying the emotional impact of these near misses. Specific audio cues can build tension and anticipation as the reels slow down, making the player feel that a big win is imminent. Even when a near miss results in a loss, the preceding sounds can create a heightened sense of excitement and encourage further play, as the player feels they are “close” to winning. This careful orchestration of sound keeps players engaged and hopeful.

The Allure of Branded and Musician-Themed Slots

A growing trend in the slot machine industry is the development of games themed around famous musicians, bands, and entertainment franchises. These slots leverage the pre-existing popularity and emotional connection fans have with these artists and brands. Games featuring icons like Jimi Hendrix, Guns N’ Roses, Michael Jackson, Motörhead, and even pop groups like *NSYNC, incorporate their hit songs and recognizable imagery. For fans, playing these slots offers a multi-sensory experience, combining the thrill of gambling with the pleasure of listening to their favorite music.

How Music Influences Playtime and Spending

The carefully curated soundscapes of slot machines can subtly influence how long individuals play and potentially how much they wager. The continuous loop of stimulating sounds, combined with the absence of clocks and external windows in many physical casinos, can distort the perception of time, leading to longer play sessions. Fast-paced music may prompt quicker betting, while more ambient, relaxing tunes can encourage leisurely, extended play. Several studies have indicated that sound, in general, makes the gaming session more arousing and that players often prefer playing with sound on, although a TapResearch study found 91% of people asked said they preferred the sound off while playing.

Awareness in an Immersive Environment

The same auditory techniques that create excitement and reinforce play can, for some individuals, contribute to compulsive or addictive behaviors. The constant positive reinforcement from winning sounds, even for “losses disguised as wins” (where the payout is less than the bet), can create a skewed perception of success. Recognizing this, some discussions in the industry and among researchers highlight the need for responsible gaming initiatives, which includes designing sounds that are engaging but not overly manipulative and providing players with options to control or mute audio.

The beat of slot machines is far more than just background noise; it is a powerful, scientifically informed tool that shapes the entire gambling experience. The resonance between gambling and music is a complex interplay of psychology, technology, and entertainment, a symphony meticulously composed to keep players engaged and the reels spinning. As technology continues to evolve, with advancements like 3D audio and virtual reality on the horizon, the auditory dimension of slot machines is set to become even more intricate and influential.
