20 Paul Carrack Collaborations You Didn’t Know About (But Probably Should)

0

Paul Carrack might be best known as that voice—the one that melted hearts on “Tempted,” gave us goosebumps on “The Living Years,” and asked “How Long” in a way that somehow never gets old. But beneath the radio hits and legendary band stints lies a staggering body of work that reads like a backstage pass through music history. The Man with the Golden Voice didn’t just lend his vocals to chart-toppers—he quietly shaped records from nearly every genre, often just a few notes away from the spotlight.

Here are 20 collaborations you might not know about—unless you’re a liner notes junkie or have Carrack on speed dial.

1. Roxy Music – “Manifesto” (1979)
Before Bryan Ferry’s tux took over the ‘80s, Carrack added keyboards to Roxy’s sleek comeback album.

2. Frankie Miller – “Darlin’” (1978)
That sweet organ sound under Miller’s whisky rasp? Carrack. All heart, no spotlight.

3. The Smiths – The Smiths (1984)
Yes, that Smiths. Carrack played keyboards on their debut. Johnny Marr fans, take a moment.

4. Elton John – “Something About the Way You Look Tonight” (1997)
The best-selling single of all time. Carrack’s on organ. Casual.

5. The Pretenders – “Thin Line Between Love and Hate” (1984)
He backed Chrissie Hynde on piano and vocals—smooth as silk, tough as leather.

6. Roger Waters – Radio K.A.O.S. (1987)
Carrack wasn’t just a sideman—he was the emotional core of this post-Floyd concept beast.

7. Nick Lowe and His Cowboy Outfit – “Half a Boy and Half a Man” (1984)
A pub rock classic featuring Carrack’s barroom swagger on the keys.

8. John Hiatt – Riding with the King (1983)
Before Clapton covered the title track, Carrack was laying down keys for the original.

9. B.B. King – Deuces Wild (1997)
If you needed more proof Carrack’s voice is royalty-approved, this album’s got it.

10. Carlene Carter – Blue Nun (1981)
Carrack’s band Noise to Go backed Carter, fusing country sass with British finesse.

11. Paul Young – “Don’t Dream It’s Over” (1991)
Carrack lent his voice to this Crowded House cover, tucked away on a hits collection.

12. Spin 1ne 2wo – Spin 1ne 2wo (1993)
Rock royalty jam session with Tony Levin, Steve Ferrone, and covers of Hendrix, Steely Dan, and more.

13. Timothy B. Schmit – “Love Will Keep Us Alive” (1995)
Co-written by Carrack, it became an Eagles hit and the most-played song on US radio in ’95.

14. Ezio – Higher (2000)
Carrack laid down Hammond organ on four tracks for this cult acoustic duo. Subtle, soulful.

15. United Artists Remember – “We Will Remember Them” (2009)
Carrack joined Paul Rodgers, Robin Gibb, and others on this charity anthem.

16. Clapton’s Pilgrim Sessions (1998)
Carrack’s organ work slides perfectly into Clapton’s moody mid-life masterpiece.

17. Eric Clapton – Live in Concert 2019
Carrack joined Clapton’s world tour, delivering vocals and keys to rapturous crowds.

18. The Strat Pack – 50 Years of the Fender Strat (2004)
Wembley stage. Dylan, Beatles, Genesis covers. Carrack owned the mic.

19. Brendan Croskerry Tour (2009)
Carrack mentored and supported a rising Canadian star. Pure class.

20. BBC Four’s Remaking a Classic (2013)
Carrack covered “Misery” for a Beatles tribute, showing he still had it—range, respect, and reverence.

Whether he was adding just the right organ line, layering a background vocal, or stepping in as a lead singer for a mega-act, Paul Carrack has always made the music better. His fingerprints are everywhere.

So next time you hear a track that hits a little deeper than expected, check the credits. Odds are, the Man with the Golden Voice had a hand in it.

5 Surprising Facts About Roy Thomas Baker

If you’ve ever blasted “Bohemian Rhapsody” at full volume, sung your lungs out to The Cars, or air-guitared to Journey, chances are you’ve felt the magic of Roy Thomas Baker—even if you didn’t know his name. With his signature blend of technical wizardry, sonic ambition, and layered harmonies so thick you could spread them on toast, Baker helped shape the sound of rock in the ’70s and ’80s.

While headlines will always remember him for that six-minute Queen epic, the late, great Baker was much more than a “Galileo” in the control room. Here are five lesser-known facts about the man who made rock sound bigger, stranger, and, somehow, more human.

1. He started at 14—yes, 14!—at Decca Studios
Long before the platinum plaques and Grammy nods, Baker was just a teenager pushing tea carts at Decca Records. But he wasn’t just fetching cuppas—he was absorbing everything. By the time most kids were thinking about O-levels, Baker was sitting in with legends like Gus Dudgeon and Tony Visconti. By his early 20s, he was engineering hits for Free and T. Rex. A prodigy with tape spools instead of textbooks.

2. He didn’t even listen to his own work
In a 1979 interview, Baker admitted something wild for a guy who built some of rock’s most iconic albums: he didn’t listen to them afterwards. That signature wall of sound? That was Baker’s accidental fingerprint. The man was too busy moving forward to look back.

3. He recorded Queen’s debut for free—as a studio test
Baker first worked with Queen not under label orders or management demands, but as part of a studio test. Queen were recording demo tapes to help Trident Studios tune its brand-new space, and Baker—curious, ambitious, and probably a bit rebellious—used his spare time to produce them. The chemistry was instant. From there, it was all operatic choruses and layered guitars.

4. He helped launch The Cars from a school gymnasium
Elektra Records asked Baker to check out a band performing in a Boston school gym: The Cars. Most producers would’ve passed. Baker saw magic. He produced their debut, an album that fused icy synths, new wave hooks, and FM radio gold. Singles like “Just What I Needed” are still played today—and they still sound just what we needed.

5. He may be the most quietly influential A&R in rock history
When he wasn’t producing albums that would soundtrack your road trips or roller rinks, Baker was signing bands. As Elektra’s SVP of A&R, he helped bring Metallica, Simply Red, and 10,000 Maniacs into the fold. Imagine helping shape “Bohemian Rhapsody” and having a hand in Master of Puppets? That’s not just range. That’s wizardry.

Roy Thomas Baker was one of those behind-the-scenes titans who made rock louder, lusher, and stranger in the best way possible. He didn’t shout about his genius—he just stacked the harmonies, fattened the desserts, and made everything sound massive. Whether it was the bombast of Queen or the cool detachment of The Cars, Baker knew exactly how to let a song breathe, even when it was drenched in studio sorcery.

He might be gone, but every time you crank up a Queen record or hear a synth ping from the ’80s, he’s there—somewhere between the speakers, tweaking the mix, making it just a little more epic.

Thanks, Roy. You were always just what we needed.

By Mitch Rice

CBD gummies are here to take it all away. For millions of Americans, Colorado Botanical’s happy mood CBD gummies have now become the perfect morning starter, with their mood-nourishing formulation of full-spectrum CBD extract, L-theanine, passion fruit, Rhodiola rosea, and ashwagandha.

One gummy a day is all you need to power-push yourself through a full day of stress, anxiety, and discomfort. Once you start eating mood gummies every day, your natural emotional balance, energy levels, and mood fluctuations will straighten out right away.

Let’s learn a bit more about these delicious treats and understand how they can elevate your mood, even on the worst day, with the power of CBD and other naturally calming ingredients.

CBD mood gummies made just for you

Colorado Botanical’s Happy Mood Gummies are a perfect solution to take care of daily mood, emotions, and energy fluctuations for everyone. Whether you are a college junior, veteran, or working professional, happy mood gummies can help you power through the whole day without any discomfort and fatigue.

Just take one with breakfast to kickstart your day, and you’ll have energy and emotional balance for the full day ahead.

What are happy mood gummies made of?

Every mood gummy is packed with 15mg of full-spectrum CBD, 2.75 mg of terpenes & flavonoids, Safr, Ashwagandha, Rhodiola Rosea, 5-HTP, magnesium, L-theanine, and vitamin D. All these ingredients work in sync to improve your relaxation, stabilize fluctuating emotions, reduce throbbing pain, and improve immunity and nutrient absorption.

Every ingredient used in Happy Mood gummies is clinically tested and backed by actual results. The formulation contains more than 9+ minor cannabinoids, which further adds to its overall nerve-calming strength. The low sugar content of no more than 2 grams makes them ideal for people on weight loss cycles to include in their diet.

These mood gummies are vegan, gluten-free, and non-GMO, making them ideal for people with different dietary preferences. Colorado Botanicals avoids the use of artificial sweeteners, high fructose corn syrups, synthetic colors, and chemical-based preservatives. Instead, they mix happy mood gummies with the goodness of only natural fruit colors and sugars.

How do mood gummies work to elevate your mood?

When you eat a happy mood gummy, its ingredients get mixed into your bloodstream after breaking down and getting absorbed through the intestine wall. CBD immediately acts on CB1 and CB2 receptors of the endocannabinoid system, which is responsible for regulating your mood, emotions, energy levels, appetite, and sleep rhythm.

The saffron extract solely impacts your brain chemistry in such a way that your mood gets better. The working mechanism is somewhat similar to how antidepressants work, but this is much safer and more natural. Ashwagandha extracts start to work their magic by bringing down cortisol levels, which is the stress hormone, hence effectively allowing you to handle the pressure and stay calm.

Rhodiola rosea slowly gives you slight energy spurts and mental clarity in a similar way as coffee but without any jitters. The 5-HTP straightaway converts to serotonin in your brain, which helps you to manage your feelings and feel contentment. Magnesium works as a relaxing agent and brings down tension in your muscles and nerve cells, effectively making your whole body calm and laid-back.

These mood gummies make you healthy, balanced, and happy from within by naturally supporting your brain and nervous system’s modulating mechanism. Though the effects are gradual and may even take one full hour to come alive to the full extent. For long-lasting relief, consider using happy mood gummies every day for at least a few weeks, as your body needs time to adjust to the cannabinoids.

Ideal situations to experience the benefits of mood gummies

Everyone can safely consume mood gummies as a daily emotional balancer. But there are certain situations in which they can provide extra balance:

  • After a workout or sports event, your cortisol levels and muscular tension shoot up after heavy workout sessions. Taking mood gummies as part of a post-workout recovery routine can help you bring down all that stress and tension.

Plus, its CBD-rich formulation will also take care of any muscle soreness. Its natural ingredients can boost the production of the happy hormone endorphins, helping you to feel satisfied for longer durations.
  • Before Air Travel & Dentist Visit: Many people get stressed and anxious before boarding a flight or visiting the dentist. Taking mood gummies an hour before these events can help you to relax and calm down.

The magnesium present in mood gummies will take care of all the muscular tension, and 5HTP will convert to serotonin to uplift your mood. While in the air, mood gummies will help your body to slide down into a deep, restful sleep.
  • During PMS: Women can especially benefit from the mood-balancing properties of mood gummies during menstrual cycles. The sudden mood dips, soreness, aches, and inflammation that happen during the menstrual cycle can be contained by the calming and healing effects of mood gummies.

The risk of side effects is pretty low, so it’s completely safe for all women above the age of 18. Plus, magnesium levels often dip during those dates, which leads to irritability, and supplementing with mood gummies can cover that gap.

Conclusion

To sum it up, Mood gummies are packed with the goodness of natural ingredients that can take care of your mood fluctuations, energy levels, sleep, and pain perception. Just gulp one gummy before starting the day or right before hitting the bed, and you’ll get to experience nature’s healing power.

Currently, Colorado Botanicals happy mood gummies are the most affordable, safe, and effective option on the market, and you can grab their continuous monthly supply at a great price with their subscription model. After a successful fundraiser last year, Riverbeat again partnered with Positive Legacy, a 501(c)(3) charitable non-profit that integrates music and service to benefit ‘people and the planet.’ The partnership will feature an auction including a guitar and drumhead signed by festival artists, concert tickets, posters, and one-of-a-kind experiences.

The proceeds of the auction, taking place online and in-person May 3-5, will benefit Positive Legacy as well as Soulsville Foundation which benefits Stax Music Academy and inspires young people by utilizing music with an intense focus on the rich legacy and tradition of Stax Records.

“Positive Legacy is excited to be working alongside Mempho Presents again at this year’s RiverBeat Music Festival. We are thrilled to be helping to make a difference in the lives of the young people of Memphis, channeling the power of music for good” said Carrie Reppert, Positive Legacy Executive Director.

In a commitment to improving the festival experience, Mempho Presents has implemented significant changes to enhance safety and accessibility at Tom Lee Park. New entrances have been added for both RiverBeat Music Festival and Smokeslam BBQ Festival, ensuring a smoother and more secure experience for all attendees.

While the main entrance remains at Beale and Riverside, festival-goers can now access the venue through additional entry points at the Butler Street entrance and the Bluff Walk entrance near Vance Ave. To optimize security and traffic flow, the Riverside Drive and W Georgia Avenue entrance will be closed to the public.

“In response to community feedback, we have worked diligently to address previous security concerns and implement measures that allow these additional entrances to open safely. Our top priority remains the safety of our guests, staff, and surrounding businesses, while also improving accessibility to downtown parking and local establishments,” said Scott King, Head of Security for Mempho Presents.

GoGo Penguin Announce Bold New Album Necessary Fictions, Share Video for Lead Single “Fallowfield Loops”

Today, GoGo Penguin, the Manchester trio known for their blend of jazz, classical and electronic influences since forming in 2012, announce their seventh studio album NECESSARY FICTIONS due out June 20. It’s a bold new chapter in the band’s evolution and represents a deep dive into identity, authenticity, and transformation.

Alongside the announcement is the first single “Fallowfield Loops,” a punchy, melancholic, and danceable tribute to their hometown. The accompanying video — directed by pianist Chris Illingworth and bassist Nick Blacka — features evocative visuals of Manchester’s iconic Toast Rack building, the brutalist landmark seen on the album’s cover, and serves as a visual extension of the track’s mood: stark, nostalgic, and full of movement.

GoGo Penguin’s last album Everything Is Going to Be OK (2023) found the band reeling from almost breaking up, a new drummer in the form of Jon Scott (formerly of Mulatu Atsake’s band), coping with the death of family members, grief, the pandemic, and finding solace in the studio as they journeyed through uncertainty, survival and ultimately, resilience.

With NECESSARY FICTIONS, GoGo Penguin — Chris Illingworth (piano, synths), Nick Blacka (bass, synths), and Jon Scott (drums) — have embraced new textures and ideas more fully than ever before. They are operating from a place of confidence, having truly found their groove with Scott, and Illingworth and Blacka both in their fifth decade, and truly embracing who they are without fear. The album sees them expanding their signature sound, drawing deeper into modular synths, and, for the first time, welcoming other voices into their sonic world.

“This is what we want to make right now, and it feels authentic,” says Blacka. NECESSARY FICTIONS is the sound of a band unafraid to reflect who they are — not just in sound, but in spirit and surroundings.
