Caley Watts Is Spotify’s Newest Indigenous Ambassador For January

0

Caley Watts, Cree singer/songwriter based in The Great Bear Rainforest, BC, is Spotify’s newest Indigenous ambassador for the month of January.

Growing up along the river banks, mountain ranges and rainforests that fill Nuxalk Territory, Caley’s music blends folk melodies heavily reminiscent of the beauty of her home. Her debut album River’s Daughter is set to be released later this year, and she’s been well on her way to climbing the charts with hits like “East Wind” and “White Buffalo”.

To celebrate the takeover, she’ll also be featured on a billboard in Toronto’s iconic Yonge-Dundas Square on January 24.

My Morning Jacket Announces New Album ‘is’ and All-Star One Big Holiday Festival Lineup

0

My Morning Jacket is beginning the new year with the announcement of their eagerly awaited new album, is, arriving via ATO Records on Friday, March 21. Pre-orders are available now.

Produced by 3x GRAMMY Award-winner Brendan O’Brien (Bruce Springsteen, Pearl Jam), is – which marks My Morning Jacket’s 10th studio album and first full-length new collection in more than three years – is heralded by today’s premiere of the ravishing lead single, “Time Waited,” available everywhere now. An official music video directed by Danny Clinch, featuring new performance footage interspersed with archival photos from throughout the band’s history, is streaming now on YouTube. A love song for the ages, imbued with equal parts wide-eyed romanticism and wistful recognition of love’s intrinsic fragility, “Time Waited” emerged from a sample of a spellbinding piano part lifted from pedal-steel virtuoso Buddy Emmons’ lost classic album, Emmons Guitar Inc.

“I made a loop of that piano intro and listened as I went for a walk, and all these melodies started coming to me,” says My Morning Jacket vocalist/guitarist Jim James. “For a long time, I didn’t have lyrics, but then I had a dream where I was in a café and a song was playing, and the lyrics to that song became the lyrics to ‘Time Waited’ – the melodies just fit perfectly. And the lyrics are about how flexible time is, how we can bend and warp time, especially if we are following our hearts, the universe and time itself can flow to work with us.”

For more than 25 years, My Morning Jacket have achieved an incredibly rare feat in the world of rock ‘n’ roll – upholding a long-established cultural legacy while sustaining all the curiosity and creative hunger of their very earliest days. In a monumental step for the Louisville, KY-bred five-piece – vocalist/guitarist Jim James, bassist Tom Blankenship, guitarist Carl Broemel, drummer Patrick Hallahan, keyboardist Bo Koster – is once again expands the limits of their sound and elevates their artistry to unprecedented heights. The result is perhaps the most masterfully realized work yet from a band fully committed to their belief in music as a conduit for revelation of all kinds.

Largely recorded at Henson Recording Studios in Los Angeles, is finds My Morning Jacket deviating from their typically self-produced approach by teaming up with multiple GRAMMY® Award-winner Brendan O’Brien, one of the most esteemed producers in rock music, known for his extensive work with Bruce Springsteen and Pearl Jam. For James – who has produced or co-produced all of the band’s studio albums since their 1999 debut The Tennessee Fire – the decision to work with O’Brien stemmed from a newfound willingness to open up their process and involve an outside creative force in shaping My Morning Jacket’s restlessly inventive yet nuanced form of psych-rock.

“Up until now I’ve never been able to let go and allow someone else to steer the ship,” James says. “It almost felt like an out-of-body experience to step back and give control over to someone who’s far more accomplished and made so many more records than us, but in the end I was able to enjoy the process maybe more than I ever have before.”

Prior to joining O’Brien in the studio, My Morning Jacket got together for two highly exploratory writing and recording sessions, amassing over a hundred demos before settling upon the 10 eclectic tracks that eventually comprise the finished album. New songs such as the sprawling, album-opening epic, “Out In The Open” and the delightfully warped “Squid Ink” reveal a band whose voracious creative appetite is wholly matched by a deft command of their visionary musicality. When it came time to name the collection, My Morning Jacket chose a title that speaks to the infinitely unpredictable nature of music-making.

“I like how the word is indicates a sense of presence in the now – there’s no logic or rationale behind this record; it just is,” says James. “All these songs came into existence out of an attempt to connect with something beyond the human experiment, which for me is one of the most beautiful things about music – that connection with something larger than us, yet something we are all equally a part of.”

is – which arrives as My Morning Jacket celebrates the 20th anniversary of their 2005’s landmark Z, a lavishly acclaimed collection named by Rolling Stone among “The 500 Greatest Albums of All Time” – represents another milestone in the band’s ever-evolving body of work, as well as an opportunity to breathe new energy into their historically stunning and hard-driving live performances. James points to the “undeniable force of loving” as the most essential factor in the band’s longevity and unending enchantment with the process of musical creation.

“One of the cool things about being around this long is that we’re not afraid to scrap something if we don’t absolutely love it,” he says.

“It feels really great to have a collection of songs we all love this much, and to know that we worked as hard as we possibly could on them. Hopefully those songs will be helpful to people and give them some kind of peace as they try to deal with the insanity of the world – because that’s what music does for me, and doing the same for others is always my greatest dream come true.”

Widely regarded among the greatest live acts in music today, My Morning Jacket will celebrate is with an extensive tour schedule to be announced soon. Meanwhile, the band is currently readying the next edition of My Morning Jacket’s One Big Holiday, a three-night music vacation set for April 3-5 at Miramar Beach, FL’s Seascape Resort. In addition to three unique headline shows from My Morning Jacket, the event will see performances from an all-star lineup that includes Preservation Hall Jazz Band, Devon Gilfillian, Dinosaur Jr., Karina Rykman, S.G. Goodman, and Futurebirds, plus Late Night Campfire Sets by Tyler Ramsey, Maggie Halfman, and Bendigo Fletcher, as well as Late Night Silent Jam Performances by Karina Rykman, Eggy, and Illiterate Light. GRAMMY Award-Winning YELLOWJACKETS Announce New Album February 21

0

January 17, 2024: Today, GRAMMY Award-winning jazz pioneers Yellowjackets announced their new album Fasten Up, out February 21 via Mack Avenue Records. Well into their fourth decade as a band, the new release will be Yellowjackets’ 27th album and their seventh for Mack Avenue Records. The announcement comes with the quartet’s distinctively elastic take on “Comin’ Home Baby.” Penned by bassist Ben Tucker in the early ’60s, with lyrics added later by Bob Dorough (of Schoolhouse Rock fame), the song has become a perennial, recorded by everyone from Herbie Mann to Mel Tormé, Quincy Jones to Michael Bublé. Bob Mintzer’s arrangement, doubling the melody on tenor and EWI, instantly transforms the familiar chestnut into a Yellowjackets vehicle.

“Bob Mintzer’s reworking of ‘Comin’ Home Baby’ takes on prophetic significance in the light of the devastating Los Angeles fires.” shares founding member Russell Ferrante, “It is said that home is where the heart is and ours is with our fellow Angelenos.” Mintzer himself adds a personal note about the song, sharing “I learned this tune as a teenager, and I guess it has stuck with me.” He continues, “I added a bridge and a few strategic key changes to fill out the arrangement.”

Yellowjackets released their eponymous debut album in 1981 at the height of the fusion era. Since then they’ve adhered to fusion’s genre-blurring mentality while refusing to remain tied to any single style or era. Drawing upon a history-spanning mélange of jazz movements, steeped in funk grooves and chamber music sophistication, and always keeping an ear to the ground for new sounds and technologies, Yellowjackets have evolved to become a genre unto themselves.

The spirit of forward motion that has propelled Yellowjackets throughout the band’s history has less to do with the tempo of the songs themselves – which, as ever, make up a vibrant blend of styles and influences – but with their commitment to exploration and renewal. Those ideas are reflected in the band’s lineup, which features founding pianist/keyboardist Russell Ferrante; drummer Will Kennedy, whose second tenure in the band (starting in 2010) has now surpassed his first (1987-1999); saxophonist Bob Mintzer, who came on board in 1990; and the Australian-born bassist Dane Alderson, who will celebrate his first decade as a ’Jacket alongside the release of Fasten Up.

“What we’re about is a quest for self-discovery,” defines Ferrante. “We’re constantly figuring out who we are, continuing our journey and evolution while challenging ourselves along the way. The more we play, the closer we get to realizing the ideal of four guys totally losing themselves and making one unified sound.”

There is a communal joy that invigorates all of the music that Yellowjackets create. The thrill of group discovery bristles through the muscular funk grooves, deepens the emotion of the ballads, and digs deep to unearth the roots of the band’s bracing sense of swing. On Fasten Up, their rich history remains in focus in the rearview mirror as they accelerate into the future.

Supertramp’s ‘Live in Paris 1979’ Set for Release on 3LP and 2CD Standalone Packages February 28, 2025

0

Supertramp, in 1979, was one of the biggest bands in the world, following the release and extensive accompanying tour for the album Breakfast In America. Their complete set at the 8,000-seat Pavillon de Paris in December of that year, on the third of four sold-out nights, will be released as “Live In Paris ‘79” on 3LP and 2CD on February 28, 2025 here.

Recorded on December 1 & 2, 1979, the classic lineup of members Rick Davies (singer-songwriter-keyboardist) and Roger Hodgson (singer-songwriter-guitarist-keyboardist) with John Helliwell on sax, woodwinds, vocals and keyboards and a rock-steady rhythm section of bassist Dougie Thomson and drummer Bob Siebenberg capturing Supertramp performing at the peak of their career.
Unlike the previously released 1980 “Paris” live album, featuring selections from earlier shows of this Paris run, the triple LP and double CD features the complete Supertramp show from the tour, compiled from recordings during the two December shows.

Having been on the road for almost ten months throughout America, Canada and Europe in support of Breakfast in America, 1979’s top selling album, which sold in excess of 20 million copies, producing several hit singles and went on to win two Grammy awards. For a London based band that started in 1969 and, with a new line-up, reached stardom in 1974 with the release of its third album Crime of the Century and within five years to have now reached the very pinnacle of music success, it must have felt sweet.

Performing such Supertramp favorites as “Bloody Well Right,” “The Logical Song,” “Breakfast In America,” “Goodbye Stranger,” “Asylum,” “Even In The Quietest Moments,” “Give A Little Bit,” “Dreamer,” “Rudy,” “Take The Long Way Home,” “Fool’s Overture” and others amounted to nothing short of a celebration. Drummer Siebenberg says, “looking back at that period, it really was the experience of a lifetime…the best of times.” Saxophonist Helliwell notes “those Paris shows were a definite high point for us because you could feel the audience reaction. You can actually hear the volatility in the French crowd. They sound a little mad!”

The Mac Miller Estate Releases New Album ‘Balloonerism’

0

The Mac Miller Estate releases Balloonerism, the fan-favorite album that Mac created in 2014 from the same creative period that birthed his beloved mixtape Faces, officially for the first time. After being initially teased with a cryptic trailer at Tyler, The Creator’s Camp Flog Gnaw Carnival this past fall, Balloonerism was preceded by the single “5 Dollar Pony Rides,” which was released last week. The album arrives alongside Balloonerism – A Film Based On The Album By Mac Miller, directed by Samuel Jerome Mason and produced by Hornet. Presented by Remember Music & Warner Records, the film represents a long-form companion to the album that further illuminates the world showcased by the album’s trailer and is available to stream globally via Prime Video now here.

Speaking about the process of conceptualizing and creating the film, Samuel Jerome Mason shares:

I was first approached by Miller and Karen to work on a music film to accompany Mac Miller’s unreleased album, Balloonerism, in 2023. I began by trying to find a thematic thread running through the album, which features illustrative lyrics that tell beguiling and tangential stories. The line, “but do you feel as big as your shadow,” struck me, and it became the thesis of sorts for the video.

Understanding the album to be about growing up, I set out to make a film that meditates on time—racing time and losing innocence. The roles that children adopt and how those roles ossify into adults who at their cores are still those shadowy children. The main character, Timmy, takes on the role of the wizard or storyteller, the one who summons a vision of the future for his group of friends.

In racing ahead, the children play out their darker instincts, letting their shadows run wild. In trying to fly they fall. But that journey is life itself, and the wisdom of older age resides in the newfound empathy we can extend to our younger, clumsier selves.

This interplay between gravity and light hopefully echoes the emotional effect of Malcolm’s music. He captured the way we all feel at times—lost, confused, and small—with humor, humility, and honesty. This album immortalizes Malcolm’s distinct spirit—as all wizards live forever through their magic—and I tried to do his legacy justice.

The project is indebted to Malcolm and the work surrounding the album—the artwork and plans laid, the maps drawn. As animators and filmmakers, we feel immense gratitude in joining ranks of collaborators and contributors to this album.

The album is available now digitally as well as in a variety of physical formats including CD, cassette and vinyl, all of which are now available for purchase. The vinyl, which was designed by Bráulio Amado with Mac’s commissioned cover art by Alim Smith,  is available as a two-LP release across two exclusive variants only available through balloonerism.com – a one-time, limited edition deluxe pressing that features a rainbow foil-wrapped slipcase with white splatter cloud vinyl and a 32-page color booklet featuring photos and lyrics as well as a limited one-time pressing that features clear vinyl.

Eligible applicants are required to complete an application and provide supporting documents. These include a government-issued photo ID, proof of hardship (such as a letter from an employer about job loss due to a natural disaster, a government report or notice of a natural disaster affecting your primary residence or place of employment, or a statement from a disaster relief agency detailing the area affected by a natural disaster), and a resume or bio.

The program provides approved applicants a one-time $2,500 direct support payment. This financial aid can be used at the applicant’s discretion for matters deemed most urgent, providing the flexibility needed in times of crisis.

Where do I start?
