Morrissey has more to share from his latest sessions. The beloved and influential singer just released the Deluxe Notre-Dame EP via Sire / Warner Records, building out “Notre-Dame” from his recent album ‘Make-Up Is A Lie’ with three complementary B-sides. The set includes a striking orchestrated version of the title cut alongside two additional songs from the LP recording sessions, “Hello Hell” and “Happy New Tears.” It’s a generous expansion of one of the record’s standout moments.
The original “Notre-Dame” runs on vibrant production, glistening guitar strum, and driving drums, moving through inventive synth-pop passages and a jagged post-punk solo as Morrissey pledges solemn solidarity to the Parisian landmark. The Orchestrated Version opens with a live-band feel before a wave of strings rises behind the groove, surging into something cinematic and majestic. The psychedelic “Hello Hell” and disco-rock “Happy New Tears” round out the EP as welcome additions to his canon.
The EP follows ‘Make-Up Is A Lie’, Morrissey’s 14th solo studio album, which arrived in March as his first new record in over five years and his first for Sire / Warner Records in 30 years. The 12-track cycle features the trip-hop-infused single “Make-Up Is A Lie” and proven live favorite “The Monsters of Pig Alley.” It hit #3 on the UK Albums Chart, becoming his 16th Top 10 solo album there and his 26th Top 10 overall counting his work with The Smiths. MOJO Magazine called it his most convincing howl for ages.
The album reunited Morrissey with producer Joe Chiccarelli (The Strokes, Weezer, The White Stripes, My Morning Jacket) at Studio La Fabrique in the Saint-Rémy-de-Provence region of Southern France. With poetic, provocative lyrics and evocatively unpredictable instrumentation, the LP confirms his ongoing status as one of music’s most potent voices four decades in. He’s joined on both the album and the EP by a familiar cast including Jesse Tobias, Camila Grey, Carmen Vandenberg, Juan Galeano, Alain Whyte, Gustavo Manzur, and Brendan Buckley. The Deluxe Notre-Dame EP is available digitally and on collectible 12-inch yellow vinyl.
Following a catalog-spanning world tour that wrapped in March, Morrissey is back on the road through the rest of the year, including a headlining slot at the Darker Waves festival in Huntington Beach, CA on November 14.
