Liverpool Skiffle Pioneer Len Garry Of The Quarrymen Dies At 84

0

Len Garry, Liverpool skiffle musician and early member of The Quarrymen, has died at 84. Before the world knew The Beatles, Garry stood shoulder to shoulder with John Lennon and Paul McCartney, holding down the tea-chest bass as the group carved out its first sound. His story sits at the ignition point of modern rock.

Born January 6, 1942, in Wavertree, Liverpool, Garry met McCartney at Liverpool Institute High School for Boys and joined The Quarrymen in 1956. He performed at the band’s first Cavern Club booking in 1957 and at St. Peter’s Church on July 6, 1957, the afternoon Lennon and McCartney first connected. That moment reshaped popular music.

Garry remained with the group until August 1958, when tubercular meningitis forced him into hospital for seven months. His departure came just before the band recorded “That’ll Be the Day” and “In Spite of All the Danger.” Even so, his imprint on the earliest line-up remains permanent.

Beyond The Quarrymen, Garry built a life in architecture and later fronted the touring rock gospel musical “Come Together,” launched in America by Pat Boone. Music stayed central. The stage kept calling. The connection to those early Liverpool days never faded.

In 1997, he reunited with surviving Quarrymen members and returned to recording and touring. The band released ‘Get Back – Together’ (1997), ‘Songs We Remember’ (2004), and ‘Grey Album’ (2012), revisiting the skiffle and rock and roll roots that sparked a revolution. The energy felt immediate and alive.

Garry also told his own story in the 1997 memoir ‘John, Paul & Me: Before the Beatles.’ The book documents schoolyard friendships, early rehearsals, and the night McCartney met Lennon from an insider’s view. It stands as a vivid record of the moment rock history began to move.

LSU-Born Rock Band The Bends Launch New Chapter With “Tango”

0

Emerging from late-night jam sessions at LSU, rising rock outfit The Bends return with their new single “Tango,” out now via Warner Records. The track follows “Lips” and signals a fresh chapter for the Baton Rouge quartet. Written after a reflective phone call with someone from his past, frontman Hayden Field describes “Tango” as a meditation on reconnecting and navigating the emotional distance that time can create.

The band’s 2025 EP ‘Leeward Drive’ further cemented their momentum, highlighted by “Virginia,” co-written with Kevin Griffin of Better Than Ezra. Expanding beyond Louisiana, the group caught the attention of Brad Shultz of Cage the Elephant, who stepped in to produce “The Fence.” Blending textured vocals with garage rock energy inspired by The Strokes and Kings of Leon, The Bends continue to build a rapidly growing fanbase drawn to both their recordings and their electric live performances.

Following recent headline shows, the band will hit the road supporting Houndmouth and Ole 60, alongside festival appearances this spring and summer. With “Tango” setting the tone, The Bends are leaning into their college-town roots while pushing confidently toward a national breakout.

Scottish Filmmaker David Arthur Directs Poignant Short for Songraes’ “Wind”

0

Award-winning Scottish filmmaker David Arthur directs a striking new short film for “Wind,” the latest track from Hamburg-based trio Songraes, featured on their EP ‘Distance’ via Sotones Records. Conceived as a self-contained narrative work, the film uses the song as its emotional anchor, exploring memory, movement, and the fragile boundary between past and present. Set against the windswept backdrop of Troon on Scotland’s west coast, the seaside landscape becomes both literal setting and symbolic terrain.

“Wind” began as a delicate instrumental by Hannes Klock before lyrics from Leo Bruges shaped its themes of isolation, loneliness, and fleeting hope. Anja McCloskey expanded the atmosphere with textured accordion, while strings from Davis West deepened its cinematic scope. Arthur’s film stars acclaimed actor David Hayman as an elderly man navigating recollection and longing, with Elysia Welch appearing as a memory drifting in and out of his world. Arthur, whose credits include editing work on “Outlander” and Sundance winner “God Help the Girl,” brings a restrained, emotionally rhythmic approach that invites interpretation rather than explanation.

Inspired by his own father’s experience with dementia, Arthur infused the project with personal resonance. Filmed shortly before his father’s passing, the finished piece carries added emotional weight. With ‘Distance’ blending analogue warmth and rare instrumentation, Songraes pair the release with support for Spirit Aid, the charity founded by Hayman. The collaboration stands as both a cinematic meditation on memory and a meaningful gesture of awareness and support.

Pop punk favorites New Found Glory are back with ‘Listen Up!,’ their first full-length album in nearly six years. Out now via Pure Noise Records, the record delivers a high-energy set of songs centered on resilience and hope. This spring, the band joins Yellowcard on the extended The Up Up Down Down Tour, with special guests Plain White T’s. Trousdale Announce ‘Growing Pains Deluxe’ and Share Neil Young Cover

0

Trousdale, the LA-based indie folk trio, announce Growing Pains Deluxe will be released on May 15. Arriving a little after the one-year anniversary of their sophomore album, the expanded version will include a mix of new songs and reworked versions of Growing Pains’ standout tracks. The deluxe album will feature Rachael Price from Lake Street Dive, Tors, Ken Yates and HAFFWAY.

Along with today’s news, Trousdale has released their soaring cover of beloved Neil Young classic “Old Man.” A song the trio has been performing for years, Quinn D’Andrea, Georgia Greene and Lauren Jones use their three-part harmonies to raise the song to towering vocal heights.

“We’ve always been huge fans of Neil Young,” shared Trousdale. “His music and activism have both served as massive inspirations for us as a band. We covered ‘Old Man’ years ago for fun, and filmed a live version as just a trio. But as we began touring with a full band, it became a constant cover in our live set. It’s by far the hardest vocal arrangement we’ve ever performed. Although this song has been in our live repertoire for years, we felt like ‘Old Man’ was the perfect cover for us to begin with after releasing ‘Growing Pains.’ For the song itself and our own journey with it, we loved the idea of following our album up with a song about growing up — and how we all want and need so many of the same things in life no matter our age.”

Three women in colorful outfits, one in a green sequined top with long gloves, another in a light blue dress, and the third in a fuchsia ruffled dress, sitting closely together with a soft and contemplative expression.

Currently underway, Trousdale are wrapping up their headline European/ UK tour. Once they return to North America, the band has recently announced a new run of headline tour dates at the end of May through mid-June. As festival season begins, Trousdale can be seen at Okeechobee Music & Arts Festival and Highwater Festival. See all upcoming tour dates here and below.

Grammy-winning superstar Megan Thee Stallion is heading to Broadway this spring for a limited eight-week run in Moulin Rouge! The Musical at the Al Hirschfeld Theatre. From March 24 through May 17, Megan will take on the role of Harold Zidler, the charismatic impresario at the heart of the Parisian nightclub spectacle. With the casting, she becomes the first female-identifying performer to play Zidler in the global stage history of the production, based on Baz Luhrmann’s 2001 film.

The announcement arrives as the Tony Award-winning musical prepares to close its Broadway run in July after seven years at the Hirschfeld. Megan described the opportunity as both an honor and a creative stretch, noting that Broadway demands a new level of discipline and storytelling. She shared excitement about embracing the challenge and revealing a new side of herself to fans.

Producer Carmen Pavlovic called the casting a milestone moment and part of the show’s closing celebrations, adding that audiences can expect subtle nods to Megan’s own music during the engagement. With one of music’s most influential voices stepping into a theatrical spotlight, this limited run promises to be a standout chapter in the production’s final months.

Multi-Grammy and Academy Award winner Jon Batiste will bring his boundary-crossing artistry to KOKO for a special four-night residency from June 24 through June 28. The performances launch the inaugural Jon Batiste World Festival, curated by Batiste and co-curated by Michael Mwenso, with additional dates to be announced. Each evening promises a distinct, concept-driven experience that reflects Batiste’s expansive musical vision.

The residency will unfold across four unique themes: a symphonic performance with orchestra, a fan-requested set drawing from his full catalogue, a communal evening centered on songs of hope and change with special guests, and a live-band presentation of his jazz compositions from Soul, the Disney and Pixar film that earned him both an Academy Award and a BAFTA Award. The series highlights the fluidity and collaborative spirit that define his work.

Batiste reflected on his long relationship with London, recalling early touring experiences alongside Roy Hargrove, Cassandra Wilson, and Wynton Marsalis as formative artistic moments. Hosting a festival in the city, he shared, represents a full-circle milestone and a celebration of enduring creative connections.

Presales begin March 4, with general tickets on sale March 6 at 10 am local time. The announcement arrives amid a prolific stretch for Batiste, whose recent album ‘Big Money’ earned Best Americana Album at the 2026 Grammy Awards, marking his eighth Grammy win.

From an Oscar-winning score to chart-topping classical projects and global live performances, Jon Batiste continues to expand one of contemporary music’s most dynamic and wide-ranging bodies of work. The London residency stands poised to be a defining moment in that ever-evolving journey.
