Depeche Mode Announce First Live Shows in Five Years

0

Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Class of 2020 inductees Depeche Mode announced today at a special event in Berlin that they will be releasing a new album and embarking on a world tour in 2023. The Memento Mori Tour will support the band’s forthcoming 15th studio album, Memento Mori, due out in Spring 2023.

In a break from tradition, Dave Gahan and Martin Gore revealed today that the Live Nation-presented tour will begin with a special, limited series of North American arena dates starting March 23rd, before the band heads to Europe for their summer stadium tour. These limited North American dates will feature stops at New York’s Madison Square Garden, Chicago’s United Center, Los Angeles’ Kia Forum and Toronto’s Scotiabank Arena, among others. The band will then begin their European stadium tour on May 16th, with noted stops including the Stade de France in Paris, Berlin’s Olympic Stadium, Milan’s San Siro Stadium, and London’s Twickenham Stadium. For further information on the tour routing and ticket on-sale dates, please go to depechemode.com. The full listing of dates, cities and venues is also below.

In speaking about Memento Mori, Martin Gore commented, “We started work on this project early in the pandemic, and its themes were directly inspired by that time. After Fletch’s passing, we decided to continue as we’re sure this is what he would have wanted, and that has really given the project an extra level of meaning.” Dave Gahan added, “Fletch would have loved this album. We’re really looking forward to sharing it with you soon, and we can’t wait to present it to you live at the shows next year.”

The Memento Mori Tour will be Depeche Mode’s 19th tour and their first in over five years. The band’s most recent outing, the 2017-2018 Global Spirit Tour was its longest to date and was one of the year’s highest grossing tours, with the band playing to more than 3 million fans over the course of 130 shows across Europe and North America.

Memento Mori will be Depeche Mode’s 15th studio album and the follow-up to 2017’s critically acclaimed Spirit, which reached #1 in 11 territories, charting in the Top 5 in more than 20 others. Memento Mori will be released worldwide in Spring 2023 via Columbia Records.

Having sold more than 100 million records and played to more than 35 million fans worldwide, Depeche Mode remains an ever-evolving and singularly influential musical force. An indelible inspiration to fans, critics and artists alike, Depeche Mode continues to forge ahead, with the Memento Mori album and tour representing the opening of the newest chapter of a peerless and ongoing legacy.

My Next Read: “Shine Bright: A Very Personal History of Black Women in Pop” by Danyel Smith

0

A weave of biography, criticism, and memoir, Shine Bright is Danyel Smith’s intimate history of Black women’s music as the foundational story of American pop. Smith has been writing this history for more than five years. But as a music fan, and then as an essayist, editor (Vibe, Billboard), and podcast host (Black Girl Songbook), she has been living this history since she was a latchkey kid listening to “Midnight Train to Georgia” on the family stereo.

Smith’s detailed narrative begins with Phillis Wheatley, an enslaved woman who sang her poems, and continues through the stories of Mahalia Jackson, Dionne Warwick, Aretha Franklin, Gladys Knight, and Mariah Carey, as well as the under-considered careers of Marilyn McCoo, Deniece Williams, and Jody Watley.

Shine Bright is an overdue paean to musical masters whose true stories and genius have been hidden in plain sight—and the book Danyel Smith was born to write.

Invitation to be heard: an important call to action for Canada’s live music community

0

Calling all live music companies, venues, festivals and organizations:

This is your official invitation to join a special sector-wide town hall hosted by the CLMA, CAPACOA and Festivals and Major Events (FAME) as they join forces to launch a new advocacy campaign aimed at inspiring the federal government to act by reinvesting recovery funding in the live performance sector through the next budget cycle and beyond.

Canada’s live music industry has proven that by working together we can forge real change. Still in the grips of pandemic-related disruption, we are rebooting our advocacy machine and we need your voice and support for maximum impact.

In 2019, after sustained advocacy efforts by the performing arts community, the federal government granted temporary funding increases to the Canada Arts Presentation Fund and the Building Communities Through Arts and Heritage program. These supplementary funds are currently set to end on March 31, 2024. Since 2019, these two already oversubscribed programs have seen their number of recipients increase significantly. Divesting in these programs is not an option. That is why the live performance sector is asking the federal government to make the supplementary funds permanent and to invest an additional $30 million per year in these two programs.

Live performance associations articulated a strong case for these investments in their pre-budget submissions (see CAPACOA’s recommendations for the 2023 federal budget).

They will share their strategy to engage the federal government on the question of permanent and increased funding for a range of Canadian Heritage programs, including those that are accessible to both not-and-for-profit entities.

Please mark your calendars now and join them on November 28 at 3pm EST as they assess current realities and talk about tangible actions that each and every one of us can take. Presenters: Frédéric Julien (Director of Research and Development, CAPACOA) and Erin Benjamin (President & CEO, CLMA).

Gord Downie And Bob Rock Release ‘The Raven And The Red-Tailed Hawk’

0

Today, Gord Downie, the iconic frontman of The Tragically Hip, and Bob Rock, the legendary producer perhaps best known for Metallica’s Black Album, together share The Raven And The Red-Tailed Hawk – the second missive of their long mythologized collaboration. The three-track digital collection is led by the eponymous song, “The Raven And The Red-Tailed Hawk,” a rave-up rocker brimming with chiming guitars, galloping drums, and a combustive chorus that underlines the pair’s affinity for pop punk abandon, heard before in The Tragically Hip’s “Fireworks,” or Rock’s work with The Cult and in The Payolas. Steeped in Downie lore, delivered with his unparalleled expression – images of the raven “round the housefire’s afterglow,” and parking lot skipping stones – “The Raven And The Red-Tailed Hawk” instills hope, with a picture perfect refrain of resilience landed from up above, when needed most: “Some days, I can’t do it/ Sometimes I just can’t do it/ The only way around is through it.”

“‘The Raven And The Red Tailed Hawk’ was the first song that Gord and I completed,” says Rock, recollecting the recording sessions that began in 2009. “It was a special moment for both of us, as at that point… we saw the future!”

More than a decade in the making, the long mythologized collaboration was recently introduced with the single “Lustre Parfait,” the title track to a new album that will be released May 5, 2023 via Arts & Crafts. Inspired by their brotherhood in rock n’ roll, the fourteen songs that make up Lustre Parfait are electrified and resplendent, a deep dedication of reverence to the magnitude of music itself.

Downie and Rock’s collaboration began when they first worked together on The Tragically Hip’s World Container (2006) and We Are The Same (2009). It was after the second outing that Downie asked if Rock had music he could write lyrics for. The sonic spaces that Rock would provide led Downie into the depths of his notebooks, armed with the musical clues to find the brilliance mapped therein. On “Lustre Parfait,” charged the full strength of his spirit and the magic of collaboration, Gord tugs on the heartstrings of the mind, with such perfection: ‘All I want/ All I wish/ Is for a heart I can give/ First word/ To final wish/ A heart I can give.’

Compared to the raw intimacy of Downie’s posthumous solo releases – 2017’s letter to loved ones Introduce Yerelf, and 2020’s ghostly goodbye Away Is Mine – this glimpse of Lustre Parfait suggests a gift of unbridled energy from one of Canada’s most eternally cherished voices. The Raven And The Red-Tailed Hawk is a rallying cry from Gord that rings loud and clear: the author of our life’s soundtrack, in the pocket of a gleaming rock band, relentless, lit up by the risk of experimentation.

Bob Rock says: “First and foremost Gord was my friend, and having the opportunity to work with him on these songs was one of the biggest highlights of my professional life. I am grateful that I got to witness his genius in such close proximity.”

Words by Gord Downie and music by Bob Rock – the fireworks in that statement alone reverberate vastly. Contributing guitars, keyboards, and percussion, the multi-platinum-selling, Grammy Award and JUNO Award-winning, Canadian Hall of Fame-inducted Rock inspires indelible performances from Downie with his vibrant musical imagination and deft production touch. Renowned for a stunning and diverse discography that ranges from Motley Crüe to Michael Bublé, Rock ignites electric melodies of rock n’ roll grandeur beneath Downie’s peerless lyricism. Flanked by co-producers Jamey Koch and Adam Greenholtz, Rock leads a cast of contributing musicians that intuit the depth of his ideas, emulating the pomp and bombast of The Rolling Stones or the earth-shocking cacophony of Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band with profound perspective.

The Raven And The Red-Tailed Hawk is out now as a three-song digital collection via Arts & Crafts, with the recently released single “Lustre Parfait” and b-side “Is There Nowhere,” a brooding symphonic creation marked by Downie’s tense interplay featuring vocalist Ché Dorval. More details on the album soon to follow.
