The Zolas Cover Poppy Family’s “Where Evil Grows” for Push Button Radio Album

0

Light Organ artists The Zolas have been commissioned to cover 70s Canadian musicians the Poppy Family’s CanCon classic “Where Evil Grows” as part of Light Organ Records Presents Push Button Radio: CanCon AM Radio Hits from the 70s — available now.

Their electrifying interpretation of the yesteryear hit will resonate with generations of music fans. The Zolas stay true to form of the Poppy Family’s recognizable shangrila of 70s fanfare while updating the vibe to match the current mainstream of today’s alternative pop.

Released in late 2021, Push Button Radio is the reimagining of CanCon radio hits — each delicately restructured and performed by new-age Light Organ recording artists, and their varieties of styles and eclecticism. “When I agreed to write the liner notes to Push Button Radio, I visualized it as a simple, pleasurable, and easy trip down memory lane,” recalls Jonathan Simkin, President of 604/Light Organ Records in Vancouver. “I did not anticipate the intense mental journey that would ensue. I started by listening to the songs — both the covers, and the originals just to refresh my memory.”

The Zolas, the JUNO Award-nominated four-piece from British Columbia, are a Canadian rock outfit with a handful of distinctive and accolade-earning records to their credit. When approached to perform on Push Button Radio, they turned to the psychedelic pop group of their home province to join the album — the Poppy Family. The Zolas’ reimagining of “Where Evil Grows” earned them praise from musician, producer, and publisher of the track Terry Jacks himself — noting, in particular, Zach’s vocals on the final cut.

“Terry signed off, and I feel great about having two Poppy Family covers on the album,” says Simkin. “The Poppy Family was an international success story, and I remember hearing these songs on the radio in the 70s. Even at the time, I remember thinking they were kind of like a scarier, more menacing version of the Carpenters. Beautiful melodies and gorgeous harmonies presented in full glorious angst. Songs about the dark underbelly of interpersonal relationships wrapped in such lovely music. The Zolas do justice for this song.”

The Zolas also provide a visual component to the track, bringing the song to life in a music video: “I thought of the concept for the ‘Where Evil Grows’ music video while waiting for an elevator in my apartment building. COVID restrictions were pretty tight at that time so you were only allowed a few people into each elevator so I had to wait and watch three ‘full’ elevators stop at my floor. Each elevator that passed, I saw a little scene play out in front of me and I thought it was an interesting glimpse into some people’s lives. By the time an empty elevator finally came for me, I was already walking back to my apartment to write up the concept for the video.”

“Where Evil Grows” (Poppy Family cover) is featured on Push Button Radio, recreated by The Zolas. DIscover this track, and other nostalgia-inducing 70s masterpieces by Light Organ Records.

Rocker Joe’s Groove Huddle Pays Homage to the Power of Support During Setbacks with the Release of “Strong”

0

Paying homage to the power of support during times of struggle, Jochen “Joe” Kinzig and his rock outfit Joe’s Groove Huddle release a new single, “Strong.”

“The song is about the support important persons can give in phases of setbacks or hard knocks,” explains Kinzig. “In a time of increasing uncertainty, it is becoming more and more important to have fixed points in life. Being aware of this is the key to finding the right balance.”

An electrified blast from your speakers, the song sears the mundane and causes a cataclysmic soundscape you’ll find yourself cranking the volume for.

The German bass player with a desire to walk the line solo, Kinzig assembled the Joe’s Groove Huddle project in 2020 as an answer to penning his own tracks from a distance with other musicians during the pandemic. The result is a hellfire entry into rock and roll; think synth-infused rock anthems, a fist-bump to Maiden, a nod to Ghost, a bow to Rammstein, and beyond.

“The name ‘Joe’s Groove Huddle’ really describes this very special setup with changing line-ups and the only fixed artist in the band – me,” says Kinzig. “The name stands for the philosophy of the band: Friends having fun with good music.”

Kinzig led the charge on his newly minted musical masterpiece with the release of “Good Day” in February 2021, followed by “Shot From Behind,” In his swirling kaleidoscope of ever-changing musicians, the singles were recorded by his former bandmates Uwe Flatter and Jochen Stien of Killjoy. Keys were supplied by Torsten Lehnert and drums by Christian Fier, both from the current bands of Kinzig. On the latter, Eckhard Koch contributed the backing vocals.

Now with the debut of “Strong,” Kinzig has spun the musical wheel on participants, adding an international flair to the lineup. “The vocals of ‘Strong’ were sung by Eric Castiglia (Italy) and the rap part in the chorus was performed by Daniel Picknell (England),” he explains. “The guitars were recorded by my current bandmate, Benedikt Staud, and the drums were again played by Christian Fier.”

As such, the track is an instant rock headbanger in the triad of singles Kinzig has penned and produced, with “Strong” nestling comfortably in the audio storm Kinzig has created. “I wanted to be able to realize my own songs with my personal ideas,” he says. “I wanted to try to produce the songs on my own as well as possible, so I am not only writing the songs, but I also produce and mix them.”

If there is strength in numbers, then accept the invitation to Joe’s Groove Huddle. The group has room for more, and we’re all invited to be “Strong” together.

Flamenco & Rock-Instrumental Guitarist Roland Grant’s New Single is Born of Fire

Award-winning Canadian flamenco and rock instrumental guitarist Roland Grant sets speakers ablaze with his fiery new single, “Nacido del Fuego.”

A scorching testament to his incendiary guitar technique, “Nacido del Fuego” has Grant masterfully commanding the frets as a puppeteer of a passionately penned prose on the music that moves you most. The track is featured on his debut album, Equilibrium, and is matched solely by his exquisite music video showcasing his expertise.

“Equilibrium is a purely instrumental offering and was made to showcase the stylistic contrasts of my playing and composing,” Grant says. “The record was recorded entirely on a laptop in my kitchen, and the accompanying music videos for songs ‘Nacido del Fuego’ and ‘Andalusian Nightfall’ were guerrilla filmmaking feats that involved myself and a buddy hauling the Marshall stacks to a 17-story rooftop, having our cameraman drive alongside the borrowed Mercedes on a Segway to capture the closeups while his wife spotted the road for oncoming traffic, and generally using unconventional methods to make my vision a reality with limited resources.”

Awarded the prize for Best Tonal Music at the 2017 International Antonín Dvořák Composition Competition in the Czech Republic, Grant is a world-renowned composer and performer earning a reputation for well-refined musicality and a penchant for eloquent songwriting — including the release of a recent purely classical recording, Piano Quintet.

Endorsed by Godin Guitars, the Windsor, NS-born guitar virtuoso, composer, and vocalist is predominantly influenced by Latin and Spanish-infused rock music. Grant’s relentless talent brings audiences to awestruck ovations as his mercilessly impressive Flamenco guitar talent is a breath-taking sight to witness live. Frequently incorporating orchestral elements into his music, Grant is backed by a full band and special guest vocalists when he performs.

As the endemic looms ahead for the world, Grant’s touring schedule has been reignited by his passion to perform stage after stage, night after night. In 2022, armed with his guitar, his ability to mesmerize audiences, and present his astonishing ability to enchant and ignite the stage through his compositions and multi-instrumental agility, Roland Grant is “Nacido del Fuego”.

And so is his music.

Alt-Rocker Mikey is “Roaming” with Release of New Sophomore Single

0

Following three featured radio show debuts, critically acclaimed and Exclaim! Eh! List Canadian alt-rocker Mikey wants to know if you’ll go “Roaming” with him for the release of his dynamite new single.

Produced by multi-JUNO Award-winner Kevin Dietz (Billy Talent, Glorious Sons), Mikey — aka Michael Shankar — unleashes his next perfect anthem, complete with hints of Zeppelin and a smashing solo certain to make the rock gods proud.

For such a driving banger, the song had a quieter, more reflective start, however.

“I remember how alone I felt when I wrote this song, and writing it really gave me a chance to find myself again,” the Ottawa-born, Toronto-based artist reveals. “That said, with as honest of lyrics as I could write and a big guitar solo, this is me at my best.”

“Roaming” is the second in a string of singles for the artist — including 2022’s breakthrough release, “Operator,” which debuted on Ottawa’s Live 88.5 earlier this year.

After starting his career as a bilingual TV/FILM actor at age 11 (CBC’s The Tournament) and achieving his black belt in karate by age 12, Michael decided to further exercise his love for entertainment by beginning lessons in music at age 13.

It was a natural fit; he comes from an arts-driven family with deep roots in Canadian and global show business — including his sister, Melinda Shankar (Degrassi the Next Generation, YTV’s How to be Indie), who is a noted actress.

Toronto Pop-Hip Hop Artist Holy Ramen is ‘In Exile’ With New Single And Album

0

Holy Ramen is everything great about bedroom producers: intimate vulnerability thorough storytelling and creative control. With that, the Toronto-based artist’s newest single, “3am Thoughts,” and EP, In Exile, is a perfect example of this – and they’re both available now.

“3am Thoughts” is the product of a self-induced exile; bombarded by the duality of a toxic 24/7 news cycle and happy-go-lucky social media influencers, Holy Ramen was left with an empty feeling inside. Deciding to cut herself off from the world, Holy Ramen reclused into a personal uprooting, looking to find some sort of clarity in life.

‘It was too much,” she reveals. “I needed to cut myself off from everyone and everything. I entered a self-imposed exile, hence the name for this EP.

“I needed time alone to heal, and I was creating a lot of music.”

Inadvertently, “3am Thoughts” is a small tease of themes prominent in Holy Ramen’s newest EP, In Exile. A simple production that builds on itself, the song creates intricacies within its straightforward façade. The production embeds silky guitar and atmospheric keys to lull the listener into a daze – much like the late-night delirium that develops as the night goes by.

“Throughout my youth, I seemed fine on the outside – but not so much on the inside,” Holy Ramen recalls. “My darkest thoughts come to haunt me late at night, and if you listen to the lyrics carefully, it’s quite dark.”

Dark is an adjective that comes to mind, although the darkness behind some of the verses is accompanied by a raw and genuine vulnerability. The darkness that can accompany some of our late-night ponderances is oftentimes shined on by our acceptance of things we can’t change and words of wisdom – sometimes our own. “3am Thoughts” is a phenomenal representation of this.

“This wisdom comes with age / But with age now it’s too late
Calm down I’m just messing around / My mind’s full of strange noises and sounds
Think I got injected with the universe / Always making something new with the fairy dust”

Holy Ramen is an up-and-coming pop and hip hop artist who calls Toronto home. Best summed up as relatable and infectious, possessing an unruly talent for writing and storytelling, Holy Ramen draws inspiration from her real-life experiences to create a link between her music and her personal life and hardships.

Holy Ramen’s adventure in the world of music started at 12-years-old after she took interest in writing and producing music which evolved into her now blossoming music career.

While there is no dispute about Holy Ramen’s ability to invoke emotion in her listeners, the real bread finesse is in her innate competency of music production while ingeniously presenting music in multiple styles – all while staying on brand.

Holy Ramen’s big dreams and seemingly endless energy create a positive influence on her listeners and, inevitably, society as she climbs the ladder of success that haunts so many up-and-coming independent artists.
