Ebhoni, Toronto’s Bad Gyal Bares Her Soul In New Visual For “iykyk”

Directed by BBY Chris, the visual for “IYKYK” showcases Ebhoni in rare form as the 21-year old singer/songwriter hailing from Toronto powerfully delivers a flurry of edgy, fashion-forward performance shots, commanding her audience and unapologetically baring her soul.

An abbreviation for “if you know, you know,” the single was first released on Ebhoni’s mixtape “Good Dick & Weed,” a refreshing departure from the current landscape of female R&B heavily influenced by Ebhoni’s Caribbean upbringing. On the track Ebhoni speaks directly to a night where gunfire punctured six bullet holes in the backseat window of her family’s car, and they had to temporarily relocate to her grandmother’s house, where she openly wondered: what if she had been sitting in that backseat?

Putting up walls for her own self-protection, she’s only now beginning to draw from the power that comes from her own vulnerability. “I really have been through so much, and it’s important to show that to help others who might not have that platform.” “IYKYK” takes viewers on a 3 minute and 12 second journey through Ebhoni’s world, boldly sharing her pain, her vulnerability and ultimately her gift.

Praised for her powerhouse talent, Office Magazine predicts Ebhoni “is on a fast track to worldwide recognition.” Earlier this year, Ebhoni released her EP “X,” to critical reception from press and rare groove enthusiasts. Yusuf / Cat Stevens Releases ‘Teaser And The Firecat’ 50th Anniversary Super Deluxe Edition Box Set Reissue

Following last year’s 50th anniversaries of the era-defining albums Tea for the Tillerman and Mona Bone Jakon, 2021 will see Yusuf / Cat Stevens celebrate the succeeding album that immortalized his status as a forerunner in the singer-songwriter movement. The 1971 multi-platinum selling landmark record Teaser and the Firecat will be celebrated as a 50th anniversary Super Deluxe Edition box set, due on November 12th 2021 via Island Records/Universal Music Canada, the country’s leading music company.

A previously unheard recording of the Cat Stevens classic and Teaser album highlight “Moonshadow (Olympic Studio Demo, 1970)” is released today. Actually recorded at Olympic before the release of the two 1970 albums Mona Bone Jakon and Tea For The Tillerman this version provides a fascinating insight into the origins of one of the most enduring songs of the 1970s.

Cat Stevens achieved phenomenal success with his early work, but it was Teaser and the Firecat, his third LP with Island Records, that propelled Cat Stevens into superstardom, spawning some of his most unforgettable hits including “Moonshadow”, “Peace Train” and “Morning Has Broken”; songs by a youthful spiritual seeker, wise beyond his years that would lay the pretext for a poignant new wave of soulful troubadours and poets. Later, “The Wind” would see Teaser and the Firecat celebrated anew, rising to prominence following the song’s use in Wes Anderson’s much celebrated film Rushmore as well as the Oscar-winning Cameron Crowe film, Almost Famous. Through his spell-binding gift for songwriting and his introspective vision, Cat delivered a universal sense of hope and peace in Teaser and the Firecat that still resonates profoundly to this day.

Teaser and the Firecat walked tall in what was a year of classic albums and events that would echo down the decades. The 12 months of 1971 was a transitional year in pop culture in which the album joined John Lennon’s Imagine, David Bowie’s Hunky Dory, Joni Mitchell’s Blue, Marvin Gaye’s What’s Going On, The Rolling Stones’ Sticky Fingers and Led Zeppelin IV as the soundtrack to the momentous 500,000 strong anti-Vietnam war March on Washington D.C., the largest demonstration against US war in history, and the “Fight of the Century” at Madison Square Garden, New York City which saw Joe Frazer hand Muhammad Ali his first ever defeat. With the ‘60s now in the rear-view mirror – The Beatles gone, Jimi Hendrix and Janis Joplin having already passed on, and Jim Morrison tragically joining their number in July ’71 – there was a distinct mood of change in the air. Along with burgeoning heavy rock and the socially-conscious R&B of Funkadelic and Sly And The Family Stone, it was the era of the poetical singer-songwriter. As well as being part of this latter movement, Cat Stevens was himself inspired by it.

Half a century later, Teaser and the Firecat has been given the ultimate treatment in a brand new Super Deluxe Edition set; the most in-depth and definite version of the album possible. Presented in a remastering of Yusuf’s original artwork, the release will include: 41 previously unreleased audio tracks and 21 live video performances on disc for the first time, amongst an entire CD and LP of studio demos and alternate mixes; a stunning 44-page, 12” soft cover replica of the original Teaser and the Firecat book, hand written and illustrated by Yusuf in 1972, and now featuring text in 10 languages; and a 108 page hard-cover 12” essay book, alongside a host of other rarities across 4CDs, Blu-Ray, 2 LPs and 7” vinyl. The set will be presented in a rigid clamshell box and is the latest in a series of boxsets – so far consisting of Back To Earth, Mona Bone Jakon and Tea for the Tillerman – that celebrate the albums in full depth with the direct involvement and direction of Yusuf and his son Yoriyos, who curates and designs each boxset.

There will also be a slimmed down version of the Super Deluxe Edition, including the 108 page book in a soft cover format, along with the 4CDs and Blu-ray, housed in a rigid slipcase. Other 50th Anniversary reissue formats include a 2CD Deluxe Edition, plus 1CD and 1LP Remasters.

The 50th anniversary remaster of the album was mixed by David Hefti on CD and LP, the Super Deluxe Edition also includes a CD of previously unreleased studio material and bonus tracks, an alternate version of the album on LP, as well as a third and fourth CD featuring 23 live performances from 1971. The 50th Anniversary remaster was completed at Abbey Road Studios, and was overseen by original album producer, Paul Samwell-Smith.

The set includes a remastered 7” single of “Moonshadow”, backed with a previously unreleased Spike Milligan narration of the track from the 1977 Teaser and the Firecat animated video. The 50th anniversary edition also includes an exclusive vinyl LP, tracklisted with 5 live performances at Montreux in 1971 and six BBC Recordings, as well as a Blu-Ray disc featuring a restored version of the 1977 animated video for “Moonshadow”, a live performance of “The Wind” from 2020, plus 21 live TV performances.

Also featured in the collection is “Bitterblue²”, a newly recorded and never before heard version of the classic Teaser album track. Yusuf’s rich vocal, sung a full octave lower than the original, imparts a new sense of experience and gravity to the song whose lyrics seem to resonate with a whole new level of meaning: “I’ve been waiting a long time/To be back beyond.”

 

Ahead of the 50th anniversary Teaser and the Firecat celebrations, 2021 has seen Yusuf / Cat Stevens partner with New York Times bestselling author and illustrator Peter H. Reynolds to produce Peace Train, a children’s book celebrating the fiftieth anniversary of the iconic song’s original release. Featuring joyful illustrations and the timeless lyrics of the much-loved peace anthem, this hopeful picture book – now a New York Times bestseller itself – continues Yusuf’s commitment to children’s education and shared love for people of all cultures and identities.

Elsewhere, July 2021 saw a special Record Store Day release of the 1971 Harold And Maude soundtrack, featuring iconic songs from Tea for the Tillerman and Mona Bone Jakon alongside two new compositions for the film, “If You Want To Sing Out, Sing Out” and “Don’t Be Shy”.

Canada’s Walk of Fame announced today that six-time JUNO Award winner and platinum-selling singer-songwriter Serena Ryder is the 2021 recipient of the distinguished Allan Slaight Music Impact Honour presented to a remarkable musician, duo, or group that continues to make a positive impact with their talent and benevolence in the field of music. Canada’s Walk of Fame is grateful to the late Allan Slaight, Canada’s broadcast industry trailblazer and generous philanthropist, and proudly continues the legacy of this honour, which was established in 2010.

Through her journey of self-discovery – detailing despair, heartbreak, hope, joy, and love in her lyrics – Serena is just as passionate about her music as helping others find their path to mental wellness. Serena will be presented the honour during Canada’s Walk of Fame Awards Gala at Toronto’s Beanfield Centre on Saturday, December 4, 2021. A special broadcast will air at a later date on CTV.

Toronto-based vocal powerhouse Serena Ryder is a platinum-selling artist, JUNO and Canadian Screen Award winner. Her newest album, The Art of Falling Apart, invites listeners to join her mental wellness journey and helps us understand the importance of sitting with the uncomfortable moments and the wisdom in their messages. As an ally for mental health, Serena has travelled across the country sharing her keynote message – which share’s the album’s name – and released an animated version to inspire and reach audiences worldwide. She was awarded the Margaret Trudeau Mental Health Advocacy Award in 2018; and during the COVID-19 pandemic, Serena launched The Art of Wellness, an interactive series designed to help fellow artists and creative professionals manage stress and find balance within themselves.

JIMI HENDRIX EXPERIENCE: PARIS ‘67 out for Record Store Day

Dagger Records is proud to release Jimi Hendrix Experience: Paris 67 for Record Store Day (November 26). This 150-gram red-and-blue colored vinyl LP presents the original Jimi Hendrix Experience lineup–Hendrix, bassist Noel Redding and drummer Mitch Mitchell in peak form at the famed Olympia Theater in Paris on October 9, 1967.

This live recording documents Hendrix’s triumphant return to Paris almost one year to the date of their 1966 showcase as a burgeoning support act for Johnny Hallyday. Now in place of Hallyday’s audience were more than 14,000 screaming Jimi Hendrix Experience admirers. In his own inimitable fashion, Hendrix graciously acknowledged his audience for their early support. “Thank you very much for last year, for letting us play here,” prefaced Hendrix before starting “The Wind Cries Mary.” “Instead of booing us off the stage you gave us a chance, so thank you very much.”

These recordings capture the verve and exuberant spirit displayed by the group. Jimi kicks off the performance with a rousing “Stone Free,” known to his fans as the flip side of his debut single “Hey Joe”. “The Wind Cries Mary” finds Jimi in fine voice, showcasing his deft touch with slow ballads. The raucous “Catfish Blues,” Jimi’s unique hybrid of Muddy Waters’ classic “Still A Fool,” was another early-stage favorite of the Experience.

For the first time, tracks from this Paris concert that were previously only available on The Jimi Hendrix Experience box set from 2000 (aka the purple box) are re-integrated with several other tracks recorded that night, making Jimi Hendrix Experience: Paris 67 the most complete official release of the October 9, 1967 set to date.

Dagger Records was founded by Experience Hendrix, L.L.C. in 1998 as an ‘official bootleg’ label, providing fans throughout the world with additional live performances, home demos and studio recordings not issued on commercial albums. With over a dozen vinyl and CD titles to date, the imprint is an invaluable resource for devotees who want to dig deeper than the standard Jimi Hendrix catalog. Apart from special, limited edition vinyls such as this release, Dagger titles are not available in retail stores or via digital services such as Amazon Music, Spotify and Tidal but only via jimihendrix.com.

Titles in the Dagger series are intended to provide Hendrix’s fans with new appreciation and insights for his songwriting explorations, found on each of Dagger’s Morning Symphony Ideas (a collection of 1969 and 1970 demo recordings), Hear My Music, and Burning Desire. The live albums in the series include historically significant events such as his final concert at the Isle Of Fehmarn on September 6, 1970 and March 1968 Capitol Theater performance captured on Live In Ottawa that Jimi himself recorded. Dagger also offers a peek into Jimi’s pre-Experience days as a member of Harlem-based R&B musician Curtis Knight’s band with Live At George’s Club 20 1965-1966 and No Business: Curtis Knight & The Squires: The PPX Sessions, Volume 2.

These informative ‘bootleg’ releases are properly annotated, complete with photos, liner notes and the best possible sonic quality available and offer invaluable exposure to Hendrix’s musical mastery.

imagineNATIVE’s annual concert The Beat moves worldwide and online on October 23 with virtual performances by Nimkish, Indigo, and DJ Shub. Presented in partnership with 50/50 Arts Collective, this evening hosted by Suzette Amaya will feature Indigenous musicians from many genres PLUS some of the top music videos and performances of 2021. The Beat will also include the 2021 Harmonize Mentorship recipient announcement, which includes a grand prize of $10,000 cash contribution from Slaight Music, $10,000 of in-kind equipment rental from MBS Equipment Company, and in-kind support from Nagamo and Universal.

On October 23 imagineNATIVE will also present the music video program Reverberate. Wallows Return With New Single “I Don’t Want To Talk” And North American Tour

Wallows make a triumphant return today with “I Don’t Want to Talk,” produced by Ariel Rechtshaid (Vampire Weekend, Haim, Adele). The single, their first release since February’s Remote (Deluxe) EP, is accompanied by the Jason Lester-directed official music video – WATCH HERE. “I Don’t Want to Talk” was also featured on Apple’s New Music Daily today- check it out here.

Wallows have also announced the first part of their 2022 Tell Me That It’s Over tour which begins in North America on April 1, 2022 in Seattle, WA (see full list of dates below). Wallows, the Los Angeles-based trio of Dylan Minnette, Braeden Lemasters and Cole Preston, released their acclaimed Atlantic Records debut album, Nothing Happens, in 2019. JESSE COOK Announces Release of 11th Studio Album, Libre, Out December 3

What happens when you let multi-Platinum/Gold award-winning producer, composer, and guitarist Jesse Cook’s Spanish guitar off-leash with Algerian multi-instrumentalist Fethi Nadjem and some 808 trap beats? You get Cook’s newly-announced album, Libre — coming December 3rd.

His 11th studio offering, the release receives its first preview with title-track single, “Libre” — available now.

“I wrote and recorded Libre during the pandemic when, like most people, I was longing for freedom,” Cook shares of the new project. “My music was my escape from the four walls that surrounded me, and the storm that was swirling outside.”

The inspiration came from a long summer-day drive with his 14-year old, Cook reveals. “My daughter entertained me with her favourite playlists, much of which were trap and 808-inspired. I loved them too, and a question was planted in my mind: ‘what would my music sound like mixed with those sounds?’”

He wasn’t short on material to draw from; it’s been more than 25 years since the internationally-lauded virtuoso first stepped onto the scene with his now-iconic release, Tempest. In the time since, he’s come to hold ten Gold and Platinum studio albums with a combined sales of 2+ Million copies, five concert DVDs and live discs, five PBS specials, and multiple awards — a JUNO win, 11 nominations, three Canadian Smooth Jazz Awards, a Gemini, and an Acoustic Guitar Magazine Player’s Choice Silver Award.

The digital convergence of the past several years has also resulted in Cook’s music streamed in rather impressive numbers across a series of platforms; by September 2021, his Spotify stats had surpassed 55+ Million, and plays on Pandora soaring beyond the 300+ Million milestone. YouTube’s universally visual appeal has also grown steadily for Cook’s connection with audiences, with his channel accumulating upwards of 25+ Million views since 2010.

It was this ready-set relationship online with his legions of fans worldwide that inspired Cook through the unexpected over the course of the past 18 months. With gear cases locked and loaded, about to set off on a national 25-date tour marking Tempest’s monumental anniversary just as COVID-19 shuttered stages, and beyond, Cook made use of the time since through a series of creative experiments — including re-visiting hits like “Wednesday Night at Etric’s,” “Tempest,” and more — unveiling them in relative real-time across his social profiles.

At 10 tracks, which will see re-treatments on the likes of “One World One Voice,” “Jaleo,” “Hey!” and more, the release of Libre continues this string of Cook revisiting his distinct repertoire down newly explored sonic streets.

But while it may sound like a new style for both long-time fans and those newly gathered across Cook’s thousands of concerts and millions of livestream views the world-over, reconnecting with an 808 sound takes Cooks all the way back to his beginnings.

“I was in Grade 10 when the Roland TR808 drum machine was first released,” Cook says. “I remember pooling my money together with friends in order to rent one for our mad basement recording sessions. We were spellbound; all of its drum sounds were made by an on-board analogue synthesizer, which gave it this other-worldly quality.

“Of course, I had no idea that, all these years later, the 808 would come to define so many forms of music — from hip hop, to rap, pop, reggaeton, and trap… And now, I get to incorporate it into my own.

“For many of my fans, it may seem like a huge departure for me to record an album dominated by 808 beats but, to me, it feels like I’m coming full circle… Kinda like when wide leg jeans came around again; it’s a bit like coming home.”

Libre will be available December 3, 2021. “Libre” is available now.

Mellencamp and Springsteen filmed the video together in New Jersey this September.

“Wasted Days” is the first single off of Mellencamp’s forthcoming album slated for release in 2022.
