0

Canada’s Walk of Fame announced today that six-time JUNO Award winner and platinum-selling singer-songwriter Serena Ryder is the 2021 recipient of the distinguished Allan Slaight Music Impact Honour presented to a remarkable musician, duo, or group that continues to make a positive impact with their talent and benevolence in the field of music. Canada’s Walk of Fame is grateful to the late Allan Slaight, Canada’s broadcast industry trailblazer and generous philanthropist, and proudly continues the legacy of this honour, which was established in 2010.

Through her journey of self-discovery – detailing despair, heartbreak, hope, joy, and love in her lyrics – Serena is just as passionate about her music as helping others find their path to mental wellness. She joins past Honourees, including Alessia Cara, Jessie Reyez, Drake, Melanie Fiona, Shawn Hook, Brett Kissel, Carly Rae Jepsen, Shawn Mendes, The Weeknd and Nikki Yanofsky. Serena will be presented the honour during Canada’s Walk of Fame Awards Gala at Toronto’s Beanfield Centre on Saturday, December 4, 2021. A special broadcast will air at a later date on CTV.

“Being recognized for my work as a mental wellness ally through the Allan Slaight Music Impact Honour means the world to me,” stated Serena. “I am honoured to continue the late Allan Slaight’s dedication to effect positive change, and am so touched to share this with so many incredible musicians who have been using their gifts for the greater good of the world. I promise to do everything in my power to continue to be of service to anyone who wants to keep walking the path to wellness through music and community.”

Toronto-based vocal powerhouse Serena Ryder is a platinum-selling artist, JUNO and Canadian Screen Award winner. Her newest album, The Art of Falling Apart, invites listeners to join her mental wellness journey and helps us understand the importance of sitting with the uncomfortable moments and the wisdom in their messages. As an ally for mental health, Serena has travelled across the country sharing her keynote message – which share’s the album’s name – and released an animated version to inspire and reach audiences worldwide. She was awarded the Margaret Trudeau Mental Health Advocacy Award in 2018; and during the COVID-19 pandemic, Serena launched The Art of Wellness, an interactive series designed to help fellow artists and creative professionals manage stress and find balance within themselves.

On behalf of the board of directors of Canada’s Walk of Fame, Randy Lennox said, “Serena continues to be her authentic self, through the accolades, awards and music success, allowing us into her experiences, heartbreak, joys and passions – including being a champion for mental well being. We’re proud to recognize her work in the community, with artists, youth, and other charitable organizations supporting mental health, and can’t wait to shine the Canada’s Walk of Fame spotlight on her incredible career and impact.”

Lennox continues, “Allan’s impact on the music industry was profoundly transformative; through his many philanthropic endeavours including establishing the Allan Slaight Music Impact Honour, his legacy will continue to inspire today’s stars and tomorrow’s changemakers for generations more.”

“Serena exemplifies all of the values and qualities that my father Allan had in mind for this special honour. She is an incredibly talented singer-songwriter who leads with compassion and empathy, which is why she is able to connect so deeply with her fans and invite dialogue and hope. On behalf of the entire Slaight family, I congratulate you on all of your achievements, and know that you will continue to be an inspiring voice in the important conversation of mental wellness,” said Gary Slaight, President and CEO, Slaight Communications.

JIMI HENDRIX EXPERIENCE: PARIS ‘67 out for Record Store Day

0

Dagger Records is proud to release Jimi Hendrix Experience: Paris 67 for Record Store Day (November 26). This 150-gram red-and-blue colored vinyl LP presents the original Jimi Hendrix Experience lineup–Hendrix, bassist Noel Redding and drummer Mitch Mitchell in peak form at the famed Olympia Theater in Paris on October 9, 1967.

This live recording documents Hendrix’s triumphant return to Paris almost one year to the date of their 1966 showcase as a burgeoning support act for Johnny Hallyday. Now in place of Hallyday’s audience were more than 14,000 screaming Jimi Hendrix Experience admirers. In his own inimitable fashion, Hendrix graciously acknowledged his audience for their early support. “Thank you very much for last year, for letting us play here,” prefaced Hendrix before starting “The Wind Cries Mary.” “Instead of booing us off the stage you gave us a chance, so thank you very much.”

These recordings capture the verve and exuberant spirit displayed by the group. Jimi kicks off the performance with a rousing “Stone Free,” known to his fans as the flip side of his debut single “Hey Joe”. “The Wind Cries Mary” finds Jimi in fine voice, showcasing his deft touch with slow ballads. The raucous “Catfish Blues,” Jimi’s unique hybrid of Muddy Waters’ classic “Still A Fool,” was another early-stage favorite of the Experience.

For the first time, tracks from this Paris concert that were previously only available on The Jimi Hendrix Experience box set from 2000 (aka the purple box) are re-integrated with several other tracks recorded that night, making Jimi Hendrix Experience: Paris 67 the most complete official release of the October 9, 1967 set to date.

Dagger Records was founded by Experience Hendrix, L.L.C. in 1998 as an ‘official bootleg’ label, providing fans throughout the world with additional live performances, home demos and studio recordings not issued on commercial albums. With over a dozen vinyl and CD titles to date, the imprint is an invaluable resource for devotees who want to dig deeper than the standard Jimi Hendrix catalog. Apart from special, limited edition vinyls such as this release, Dagger titles are not available in retail stores or via digital services such as Amazon Music, Spotify and Tidal but only via jimihendrix.com.

Titles in the Dagger series are intended to provide Hendrix’s fans with new appreciation and insights for his songwriting explorations, found on each of Dagger’s Morning Symphony Ideas (a collection of 1969 and 1970 demo recordings), Hear My Music, and Burning Desire. The live albums in the series include historically significant events such as his final concert at the Isle Of Fehmarn on September 6, 1970 and March 1968 Capitol Theater performance captured on Live In Ottawa that Jimi himself recorded. Dagger also offers a peek into Jimi’s pre-Experience days as a member of Harlem-based R&B musician Curtis Knight’s band with Live At George’s Club 20 1965-1966 and No Business: Curtis Knight & The Squires: The PPX Sessions, Volume 2.

These informative ‘bootleg’ releases are properly annotated, complete with photos, liner notes and the best possible sonic quality available and offer invaluable exposure to Hendrix’s musical mastery.

0

Wallows make a triumphant return today with “I Don’t Want to Talk,” produced by Ariel Rechtshaid (Vampire Weekend, Haim, Adele). The single, their first release since February’s Remote (Deluxe) EP, is accompanied by the Jason Lester-directed official music video – WATCH HERE. “I Don’t Want to Talk” was also featured on Apple’s New Music Daily today- check it out here.

“’I Don’t Want to Talk’ is ultimately a song about insecurities. Not only in yourself, but in this case, particularly in a relationship. It centers around the fear of being away from someone for too long and that ultimately allowing the other person’s head to be turned by someone else, and instead of expressing those fears, completely shutting down and not wanting to talk about it at all,” says Dylan Minnette

Wallows have also announced the first part of their 2022 Tell Me That It’s Over tour which begins in North America on April 1, 2022 in Seattle, WA (see full list of dates below). Tickets and limited VIP packages go on sale Friday, October 8th at 10am local time. Fans who sign up for Wallows newsletter will have first access to tickets and VIP packages via a special pre-sale starting Tuesday, October 5th at 10am local time and running through Thursday, October 7th at 10pm local time (while supplies last).

VIP packages include early entry to the venue, an exclusive signed poster, tote bag, hat, commemorative VIP laminate, and first access to merchandise.. Additional dates, including international shows, will be announced soon.

Wallows, the Los Angeles-based trio of Dylan Minnette, Braeden Lemasters and Cole Preston, released their acclaimed Atlantic Records debut album, Nothing Happens, in 2019. Produced by GRAMMY® Award-winner John Congleton (St. Vincent, Alvvays, Future Islands) who also produced the band’s 2018 EP Spring, the album quickly became one of the most-streamed debut albums by any band in 2019 and features the breakthrough platinum single “Are You Bored Yet? (Feat. Clairo),” which has surpassed 607M global streams. 2020 saw Wallows release “OK,” a song that took on a new meaning during the pandemic, and their quarantine-made EP, Remote, as well as being named MTV’s PUSH Artist of the Month for September. Wallows return in 2021 with brand new single “I Don’t Want to Talk” – a first taste of their collaboration with producer Ariel Rechtshaid (Vampire Weekend, Haim, Adele) that’s been in the works over the past year.

JESSE COOK Announces Release of 11th Studio Album, Libre, Out December 3

0

What happens when you let multi-Platinum/Gold award-winning producer, composer, and guitarist Jesse Cook’s Spanish guitar off-leash with Algerian multi-instrumentalist Fethi Nadjem and some 808 trap beats? You get Cook’s newly-announced album, Libre — coming December 3rd.

His 11th studio offering, the release receives its first preview with title-track single, “Libre” — available now.

“I wrote and recorded Libre during the pandemic when, like most people, I was longing for freedom,” Cook shares of the new project. “My music was my escape from the four walls that surrounded me, and the storm that was swirling outside.”

The inspiration came from a long summer-day drive with his 14-year old, Cook reveals. “My daughter entertained me with her favourite playlists, much of which were trap and 808-inspired. I loved them too, and a question was planted in my mind: ‘what would my music sound like mixed with those sounds?’”

He wasn’t short on material to draw from; it’s been more than 25 years since the internationally-lauded virtuoso first stepped onto the scene with his now-iconic release, Tempest. In the time since, he’s come to hold ten Gold and Platinum studio albums with a combined sales of 2+ Million copies, five concert DVDs and live discs, five PBS specials, and multiple awards — a JUNO win, 11 nominations, three Canadian Smooth Jazz Awards, a Gemini, and an Acoustic Guitar Magazine Player’s Choice Silver Award.

The digital convergence of the past several years has also resulted in Cook’s music streamed in rather impressive numbers across a series of platforms; by September 2021, his Spotify stats had surpassed 55+ Million, and plays on Pandora soaring beyond the 300+ Million milestone. YouTube’s universally visual appeal has also grown steadily for Cook’s connection with audiences, with his channel accumulating upwards of 25+ Million views since 2010.

It was this ready-set relationship online with his legions of fans worldwide that inspired Cook through the unexpected over the course of the past 18 months. With gear cases locked and loaded, about to set off on a national 25-date tour marking Tempest’s monumental anniversary just as COVID-19 shuttered stages, and beyond, Cook made use of the time since through a series of creative experiments — including re-visiting hits like “Wednesday Night at Etric’s,” “Tempest,” and more — unveiling them in relative real-time across his social profiles.

At 10 tracks, which will see re-treatments on the likes of “One World One Voice,” “Jaleo,” “Hey!” and more, the release of Libre continues this string of Cook revisiting his distinct repertoire down newly explored sonic streets.

But while it may sound like a new style for both long-time fans and those newly gathered across Cook’s thousands of concerts and millions of livestream views the world-over, reconnecting with an 808 sound takes Cooks all the way back to his beginnings.

“I was in Grade 10 when the Roland TR808 drum machine was first released,” Cook says. “I remember pooling my money together with friends in order to rent one for our mad basement recording sessions. We were spellbound; all of its drum sounds were made by an on-board analogue synthesizer, which gave it this other-worldly quality.

“Of course, I had no idea that, all these years later, the 808 would come to define so many forms of music — from hip hop, to rap, pop, reggaeton, and trap… And now, I get to incorporate it into my own.

“For many of my fans, it may seem like a huge departure for me to record an album dominated by 808 beats but, to me, it feels like I’m coming full circle… Kinda like when wide leg jeans came around again; it’s a bit like coming home.”

Libre will be available December 3, 2021. “Libre” is available now.

The drop is accompanied by a companion collection of 333 unique hand-drawings. The companion pieces will be minted at pussyriot.love for .1312 ETH each. Inspired by their shared love for rebellion, plants, cows, and psychedelics are several collaborations with Trippy. Proceeds from the project support victims of domestic violence in Russia, currently incarcerated political prisoners, and Pussy Riot’s own ongoing activism and art.

Pussy Riot: “I’ve decided to work with papers from my prison sentence and to overcome the negative experience, I decided to subvert it with colorful, childish, happy pictures. I wanted to transform my traumatic experience into something positive as much as possible.”

It was 9 years ago when three members of the punk art feminist movement, Pussy Riot, were sentenced to 2 years in prison. Pussy Riot’s imprisonment started a global art-artivist movement. Thousands of people around the world protested in support of the women arrested for speaking against church leaders supporting Putin.

Guardian named, Virgin Mary, Please Get Rid of Putin, among the best art pieces of the XXI century ~ “…feminist, explicitly anti-Putin, protesting the banning of gay pride and the Orthodox church’s support of the president.” Dale Eisinger, writer and reporter for Complex, ranked Punk Prayer the 14th best work of performance art in history. Madonna, Banksy, Paul McCartney, Bjork, Sting, Sergey Brin, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Yoko Ono, Marina Abramovic, Ai Weiwei, Peaches, Chloe Sevigny, Garry Kasparov, and others expressed support for Pussy Riot and her message.

Tiktok Star Reiley Soars With “Superman” Single And Video

0

Rising pop sensation Reiley has premiered his highly anticipated sophomore single “Superman,” arriving today alongside a compelling self-directed video companion. The track marks the latest offering from his forthcoming debut EP, brb, having an identity crisisarriving October 27th via Atlantic Records.

Co-written by Reiley, “Superman” sees the him tearfully confront the ripple effect of addiction on his family. “It’s a song about disappointment,” he admits. “It explores my relationship with my father. He’s struggled with alcoholism. Before I got signed, his addiction got so bad it almost broke up our family. When I wrote ‘Superman,’ I had so many emotions bottled up: pain, resentment, fear, empathy, pity. Even a sense of loss. Above all I was so incredibly disappointed. I grew up idolizing my father and thought he was infallible. But he’s only human. I think the realization that your parents can do wrong is always scary.”

Born to remote origins in the Faroe Islands (about 200 miles north of the UK with a population of just over 50,000 people), Reiley quietly made a global impact with an exuberant presence as loud as his traffic-stopping voice and as colorful as his runway-ready aesthetic. During 2020, he embraced TikTok (@reiley) as a way to connect with listeners far and wide. Against a colorful backdrop, he belted hits into a silver mic practically floating in front of him, ultimately generating nearly 1 billion views, inciting 128 million likes, and attracting nearly 11 million followers.

“Superman” follows Reiley’s infectious debut single “Let It Ring” – which was deemed “already historic” by PAPER upon release earlier this year, in addition to receiving praise from the likes of Billboard, Cosmopolitan, Flaunt & more. The track, penned/produced by Lostboy (Zedd, Bebe Rexha), Lauren Aquilina (Rina Sawayama, Olivia O’Brien) & JHart (Jennifer Lopez, Camila Cabello), features the first-ever licensed sample of the instantly recognizable official iPhone ringtone and has picked up an incredible 10 million plus streams in addition to over 2 million YouTube views since its release.

The singer, songwriter, director, producer, and personality properly tells his story in his own words on his forthcoming brb, having an identity crisis EP, and much more to come in 2021. “As an artist, it’s my job to bare my soul and reveal my true self,” he explains. “I hope, if you’ve had similar experiences to mine, you can find comfort in knowing you’re not alone. At the end of the day, that’s really why I’m here.”

Depeche Mode To Release High Definition Version of “101” Doc Film With Unreleased Performance Footage

0

On December 3 Depeche Mode will release a newly upgraded expanded definitive box set edition of 101 documentary concert film and live album chronicling the 101st and final performance of the band’s Music For The Masses world tour, recorded live at the Pasadena Rose Bowl on June 18, 1988.

A groundbreaking collaborative documentary, 101 was co-directed by acclaimed husband-and-wife filmmaking team D.A. Pennebaker (Dont Look Back) and Chris Hegedus (The War Room) with active creative input from Depeche Mode, who’d held an exclusive contest for fans offering an appearance in a Depeche Mode movie as the prize. 101‘s narrative through-line of contest winners traveling across America to attend Depeche Mode’s landmark Rose Bowl concert is a cinematic precursor to the youth culture trend in “reality tv” programming. Depeche Mode’s 101 captures the electrifying synergy between the band and their fans.

This new HD edition of 101: A film by D.A. Pennebaker, Chris Hegedus, David Dawkins has been meticulously upgraded using 4k scans of the original film reels to create an all-new viewing experience.

The 101 Blu-ray includes three previously unseen bonus performances of “A Question of Lust,” “Sacred” and “Something To Do” plus the official promotional video for “Everything Counts.”

Additional contents in the new, limited edition Depeche Mode 101 box set include: a 48 page behind-the-scenes story of the day photo book; a 20″ x 30″ replica of original US theatrical release movie poster; a 16 page Anton Corbijn Photo Mode book as featured in the original album release; a double CD of the original 20 track 101 concert release; and a Download Card providing access to 4K downloads of the film and bonus performances plus 24-bit audio files of the 101 concert release. The two DVDs in the set contain the original extras from the 2003 DVD release of Depeche Mode – 101, which are exclusive to the DVD discs.

“It’s incredible to be able to see D.A. Pennebaker’s film and this period of our career presented in this new high-definition light,” said Depeche Mode.

“We were thrilled to partner with Sony Music on the digital restoration of Depeche Mode 101, definitely one of our all-time favorite films and one of our favorite filmmaking experiences,” said 101 co-director Chris Hegedus. “DM 101‘s parallel realities following the historic tour of this pioneering British band as they storm across America bringing an exciting new sound to the masses, along with an intimate view of a bus load of ardent young fans on an unforgettable road trip to the Rose Bowl made this documentary a groundbreaking influence on the reality genre. Making this movie was a grand adventure for both of us (Pennebaker and Hegedus)…. By the end of the tour, we became their biggest fans. We are excited to introduce this new release to audiences.”

In 2020 Depeche Mode released SPiRiTS in the Forest which Forbes described as “the new gold standard for concert films,” with director and longtime collaborator Anton Corbijn. This was recorded at the close of the record-breaking two-year Global Spirit Tour, which saw the band play to over 3 million fans at 115 shows around the world. In November they closed the year with their induction into the legendary Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.
