Since its beginnings in Jamaica in 1959, the story of the pioneering Island Records label has been inextricably linked to the story of its founder, Chris Blackwell. Now, Blackwell has curated a series of compilation LPs featuring his hand-picked tracks that correspond with his and Island’s legendary history.
On July 23, Island Records / UMe will release Volume Two of The Vinyl Series, a nine-track album covering the years 1969 to 1973. Volume One, which included pivotal songs from 1962 to 1969, will also be available, and Volume Three will follow later this year. Taken together, the set explores the wide-ranging highlights from Island’s remarkable and extensive catalog. Pre-order The Vinyl SeriesHERE.
“Just prior to underground rock taking off in the U.K., the folk scene had become extremely strong,” writes Blackwell in the new collection’s liner notes, pointing to the direction that would become a focus for the label during this period—a chapter that would culminate in the breakthrough success of Cat Stevens, whose music Blackwell describes as in the “singer-songwriter mold: not quite folk but coming from that direction.”
This volume of The Vinyl Series includes material by such quintessentially English, acoustic-based artists as John Martyn (the first person Blackwell signed to the new “pink label” Island when the guitarist was just seventeen), Richard and Linda Thompson, and the tragic cult hero Nick Drake; “his genius was eventually recognized,” writes Blackwell, “and he remains popular and revered to this day.”
But it was Stevens who would hit big (“He sold ten times what everyone else did”), helping to establish Island as a force in the pop world and blazing a trail for the singer-songwriter movement in the ’70s. This volume also includes two of classic rock’s greatest anthems—Traffic’s “Feelin’ Alright?” and “All Right Now” by Free, who Blackwell notes “now seem like the original hard-rock act.”
While these years saw Island moving into different musical directions though, they also marked the continuing expansion of the reggae revolution that initially drew Blackwell into the record business. The Vinyl Series: Volume Two includes classics from the Heptones (“Book of Rules”) and Toots & the Maytals (the incomparable “Pressure Drop”)—both, according to Blackwell, “perfect representatives of…the three-piece male harmony group, with stimulating and sublime vocals.” Jimmy Cliff’s “Many Rivers to Cross” is a precursor to the world-altering release of the movie and soundtrack The Harder They Come in 1972, and as Blackwell states, it would ultimately be Cliff’s departure from Island that led to the signing of Bob Marley and the Wailers—but that is a story for the next volume.
In track-by-track essays by noted author and longtime Island Records chronicler Chis Salewicz, the album package features reminiscences that offer Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Blackwell’s own perspective. The third volume of The Vinyl Series will continue the tale of Island’s visionary, eclectic path—venturing into funk, glam, and progressive rock—solidifying its place as one of the most distinctive and bold labels in music history.

Music Publishers Canada is thrilled to unveil the 10 participants of its Women in the Studio National Accelerator 2021, which advances the career development of talented producer-songwriters from across Canada.
First launched regionally in 2019 and expanded nationally in 2020, the Women in the Studio program offers women, gender fluid, non-binary and gender non-conforming participants a series of curated workshops, educational sessions, and networking opportunities with music industry leaders. Music Publishers Canada is committed to helping right the imbalance in the industry that exists for these producers, and supporting a creative community that will keep growing each year.
The Accelerator is designed to provide the cohort with opportunities for skills development and networking that they may otherwise be unable to access. Participants will gain valuable insights from mentors and industry experts for the duration of the program starting with virtual sessions in June through to January 2022. The program will focus on topics including technical skills, financial literacy, music business skills, and branding and will offer opportunities for creative collaborations. Each producer, as a condition of acceptance, has also agreed to explore volunteer opportunities in their own community.
“On behalf of Music Publishers Canada, I am excited to welcome these ten exceptional producers into our 2021 Accelerator. Thanks to our partners, we are able to grow the program to help advance the careers of women, gender fluid, non-binary and gender non-conforming producers in an industry where they often face more barriers than their male colleagues,” says Margaret McGuffin, Music Publishers Canada Chief Executive Officer. “I would also like to thank the many volunteers who contribute their time and energy to make this program a reality.”

George Harrison’s masterpiece, ‘All Things Must Pass’, is being celebrated with a suite of new 50th anniversary editions, including multiple limited physical and digital configurations featuring sessions outtakes and jams on August 6th, 2021.
Decades in the making and lovingly crafted by the Harrison family, All Things Must Pass has now been completely remixed from the original tapes for this stunning release that fulfills Harrison’s longtime desire. Executive produced by Dhani Harrison and mixed by triple GRAMMY Award-winning engineer Paul Hicks (The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, John Lennon), the new mix transforms the album by sonically upgrading it – making it sound brighter, fuller and better than ever before. Formats contain various ephemera, including a scrapbook curated by Olivia Harrison, replica gnomes, original album poster and much more.
Since the 50th anniversary stereo mix release of the title track to my father’s legendary All Things Must Pass album in 2020, my dear pal Paul Hicks and I have continued to dig through mountains of tapes to restore and present the rest of this newly remixed and expanded edition of the album you now see and hear before you,” says Dhani Harrison.
All Things Must Pass 50th Anniversary Edition will be available in the following formats:

All Things Must Pass has only grown in influence and stature in the half-century since its initial release, including induction in the GRAMMY® Hall of Fame and inclusion on The Times of London’s “The 100 Best Albums of All Time” and Rolling Stone’s 2020 listing of “The Top 500 Albums of All Time.” Pitchfork declared it to have “changed the terms of what an album could be.”

Today, Lindsey Buckingham has announced his forthcoming self-titled LP due out September 17, 2021 on Reprise, alongside the first single, “I Don’t Mind.” Lindsey Buckingham is his first solo release since 2011’s Seeds We Sow. As with the seven studio and three live albums he has released as a solo artist beginning with 1981’s Law and Order, the new project showcases Buckingham’s instinct for melody and his singular fingerpicking guitar style, reaffirming his status as one of the most inventive and electrifying musicians of his generation. Written, produced and recorded by Buckingham at his home studio in Los Angeles, CA, the album will be released via vinyl, CD and on all digital and streaming services.
Says Buckingham of the meaning of the single, “‘I Don’t Mind’, like many of the songs on my new album, is about the challenges couples face in long-term relationships.” He continues, “Over time, two people inevitably find the need to augment their initial dynamic with one of flexibility, an acceptance of each others’ flaws and a willingness to continually work on issues; it is the essence of a good long term relationship. This song celebrates that spirit and discipline.”
The new album is a welcome display of Buckingham’s instantly recognizable guitar work and vocal layering, particularly on songs such as “Power Down,” “Scream” and “Swan Song.” Elsewhere, Buckingham pays homage to ‘60s folk group the Pozo-Seco Singers’ hit single “Time,” a song he’s admired since he was as a teenager and has long intended to cover. “I wanted to make a pop album, but I also wanted to make stops along the way with songs that resemble art more than pop,” he says. “As you age, hopefully you keep getting a little more grounded in the craft of what you’re doing. For me, getting older has probably helped to reinforce the innocence and the idealism that hopefully was always there.”
Buckingham will be returning to the stage with a 30-city 2021 U.S. tour, marking his first in-person shows following a life-saving open-heart surgery in 2019. He’ll kick off the extensive run of shows at Milwaukee’s Pabst Theatre on September 1st, with stops at The Town Hall in NYC, The Theatre at Ace Hotel in LA and more.
Over the last four decades, Buckingham has developed a radical sense of experimentation and an unrivaled savvy as a producer. He first honed these skills as a singer, guitarist, songwriter, producer and the musical visionary of Fleetwood Mac, for which he wrote and produced several Top Ten hits, including “Go Your Own Way,” “Tusk” and “Big Love.” Under Buckingham’s direction, Fleetwood Mac became one of the best-selling and most beloved rock groups of all time. As a solo artist, Buckingham often plays nearly every instrument himself; his complex arrangements and inventive production choices make his solo work thrilling to experience. Earlier this year, he appeared on “Caution,” the newest single from the Killers. He remains a highly sought-after collaborator, a maverick and a visionary.

What is a concept album all about? And could Vivaldi’s Four Seasons considered to be one of the first concept albums ever made? In an interview with Mike Rutherford, one of the founding members of the English Rock band Genesis, Rick Wakeman is looking to back up his theory.
With a renewed sense of inner strength and hope, the multi-Platinum band Lady A announce details today behind their upcoming WHAT A SONG CAN DO (CHAPTER ONE) (BMLG Records) collection, set to be released June 25. After spending last year in rediscovery mode while recommitting themselves to their original intention, the trio emerged with a new, refined vision. The seven-track ensemble, produced by Dann Huff and with each track penned by at least one member, reinvigorates their signature rich vocal harmony, vivid emotional writing and a smooth fusion of Country, rock and pop. The new music is not dedicated to the struggles of 2020, but it was born alongside them and adds a layer of uplifting depth to Lady A’s catalog. WHAT A SONG CAN DO (CHAPTER ONE) will be available for pre-order this Friday (6/11) here alongside its gentle and wise new track “Things He Handed Down.”
“There’s an interdependence that we have with each other, and music is at the center of that to me,” Hillary Scott said. “We are all living in the now together…we’re all a work in progress, and that is what we wanted to share with these songs on the first chapter.”
With a renewed appreciation for their music and the friendship that made it possible, Lady A offers an honest self-examination while striving to be present and preaching empowered affirmation, all with the sonic blend they’re best known for. Together, they explore musically through a pure-Country lens of love, loss and laughter. The quintessential Lady A title-track for WHAT A SONG CAN DO (CHAPTER ONE) opens the trio’s hearts to a fresh start, while songs like “Talk of This Town” and “Fire” use third degree romantic burns as a metaphor for adversity. “Worship What I Hate” takes a brutally-honest look at who we become if we’re not paying attention and “Chance of Rain” reminds us not to play it safe in matters of life and love. The gentle “Things He Handed Down” dusts off some heirloom wisdom, questioning how it’s put to use.

Built around rich vocal harmony, vivid emotional writing and a smooth fusion of Country, rock and pop, Lady A have long been a model of mainstream success. Their 11 No. 1s, 18 million albums sold, 34 million tracks, five billion digital streams and a global touring footprint prove the point. Known for their 9X PLATINUM hit “Need You Now,” which is the highest certified song by a Country group, they have earned CMA Awards Vocal Group of the Year trophies three years in a row and countless other honors including five GRAMMY Awards, Billboard Music Awards, People’s Choice Awards, Teen Choice Awards, a Tony Award nod and were recently inducted as members of the Grand Ole Opry. The 34-city LADY A: WHAT A SONG CAN DO TOUR will launch July 29th in Uncasville, CT with special guests Carly Pearce, Niko Moon and Tenille Arts, with a portion of the ticket sales going towards LadyAID, the group’s philanthropic fund. At upwards of a quarter-million streams worldwide, it’s more Freak on Repeat for multi-award nominated Canadian pop dynamo Andrew Cassara and his latest official music video for “Gimme More Bass” — available now.
The freshly pressed visual lands on the heels of Cassara’s not one, but two 2021 Ottawa Music Industry Coalition Capital City Music Award nominations — Artist of the Year, and Album of the Year for 2020’s Freak on Repeat (Deluxe Version).
“Gimme More Bass is one of those songs that kind of surprised me,” Cassara shares of the deep-grooved and dazzling track. “It happened so quickly; at the beginning, it was just a melody that was really catchy and it felt like, in the blink of an eye, it came to life.
“Growing up, I was the biggest Backstreet Boys fan and ‘Gimme More Bass’ feels like I’m sticking to my roots, but that I’ve fused that ‘boy band’ pop sound with my love for retro funk and disco.
“It’s groove pop and it just feels like home to me.”
Describing the pop dynamo’s style with mere words never seems to do it full justice; hearing and feeling his music are really the only ways to fully appreciate the multi-talented artist’s ubiquitous and undulating blend of funk, disco and pop.
With streams topping 250,000+ across platforms, and fuelled by influences ranging from Shawn Mendes, to the Bee Gees, to artists like Jamiroquai – who, like Cassara, blur stylistic lines fluidly – both “Gimme More Bass” and Freak on Repeat (Deluxe Version) (SGMGroupArtists), may sound familiar, but are impossible to pigeonhole.
“Creating this song, along with the rest of Freak on Repeat, has been one of the most liberating and eye-opening experiences of my life,” Cassara reflects. “I promised myself I would write with true authenticity, and tell the stories and feelings that make me who I am in that very moment.
“Making this album changed me as a person,” he continues. “When I tell you I laughed ‘till it hurt, that I cried, that I danced like a fool…
“I broke down, and I smiled more than I ever have in my life while making this record, and that’s what creating art is all about.”
With previous releases including Lavender Feels, The Big Bang, and Freak on Repeat in its first iteration — as well as a series of singles — Cassara has performed in the US, South Korea, Singapore, Japan and Sweden. He’s slated to appear at Sweden’s Future Echoes Festival and Lithuania’s What’s Next In Music Fest this year, and has previously shared the stage with artists such as Shawn Mendes, Chromeo, Tyler Shaw, Lauv, and more.
He has also headlined the Youth X Canada Tour, performing for and engaging with audiences at youth centres across Ontario in an effort to encourage young people to share their own stories and mental health struggles.
“We owe it to ourselves to be fearless of judgement, to be our true selves, and to give ourselves the unconditional love we deserve,” he shares. “It’s something I’ve come to terms with, and I hope it resonates through my music.”
