Mike Shinoda Is Now Warner Music’s Community Innovation Advisor

0

Warner Recorded Music (WRM) has enlisted Linkin Park co-founder and music tech pioneer Mike Shinoda as Community Innovation Advisor. In this first-of-its-kind post, Shinoda will work closely with Warner Music’s leadership and business development teams to help shape the company’s artist-centric approach to Web3. With Shinoda’s support, WRM will continue to partner with artists to bring their creative visions to life and build communities across new platforms, products, and experiences, while exploring new revenue streams.

Max Lousada, CEO, Warner Recorded Music, said: “Central to our DNA at Warner is that we start with the artist experience. A passionate creative who’s deeply embedded in the rapidly evolving world of Web3, Mike’s perspective here will be invaluable. As we continue to accelerate deals and build out our expertise across the company, together we’ll navigate the possibilities at the intersection of music and technology with thoughtfulness and authenticity – to the benefit of our entire musical community.”

“There’s no one-size-fits-all approach when it comes to Web3; every artist and community is unique,” added Shinoda. “Warner has made some strong first steps in this space, and I look forward to playing a role in further exploration—supporting artists in creating new opportunities, and connecting with fans in unimaginable new ways.”

Widely acknowledged as a go-to voice highlighting the connections between music and tech, Shinoda will serve as a sounding board for Warner Recorded Music as the company looks to experiment with new and emerging technologies alongside its artists. From his early days as co-founder, vocalist, and writer-producer with Linkin Park, to blazing new paths on Twitch and in Web3, Shinoda has made a career innovating in music, fan communities, and content. His most recent explorations include “Happy Endings,” the label’s first single to debut as an NFT, and “Ziggurats,” the world’s first generative NFT mixtape—5,000 unique mini-albums created from Shinoda’s original audio and visual layers (ziggurats.xyz).

In the last few years, Warner Music’s industry-leading approach has led to partnerships with the likes of Roblox, The Sandbox, Genies, Griffin Gaming, Blockparty, OneOf, and Splinterlands. Already, Warner Music has been behind massively popular metaverse and Web3 experiences, from Twenty One Pilots to David Guetta in Roblox; digital avatars via Genies for artists such as Michael Bublé, Cardi B, and CKay; and the sale of a slew of NFTs including a hi-res digital image of the original lyric sheets from Matchbox Twenty’s megahit “Unwell” and Rico Nasty’s “OHFR?” NFT drop on SuperRare, to name a few.

The Rosalie Award is named in honour of the late Rosalie Trombley, renowned influential Music Director of the Top 40 powerhouse CKLW-AM “The Big 8” (Detroit/Windsor), She was deemed the most powerful lady in pop music and the first-ever recipient of the Rosalie Award in 2005. Radio Active 2022 will take place as part of Canadian Music Week on June 7 and 8, 2022 with over 20 sessions.

“As we celebrate our 17th year of the Rosalie Trombley award, we are thrilled to announce Karen as our recipient for this year. Special thanks to Gary Slaight and Barbara Williams for their continued support.”

Karen Steele has programmed three Toronto radio stations over the past 15 years including; MIX 99.9, KiSS 92.5, and 99.9 Virgin Radio. Karen started her Toronto career at the MIX and was the first female PD appointed to MIX 99.9 in 2005.

Karen’s love of film led her to Theatrical Marketing as the Director of Publicity and Promotion for Warner Bros Canada in 2009 where she worked on “The Hangover” and “Harry Potter & The Half-Blood Prince” campaigns.

In the same year, Karen jumped at the opportunity to work at the newly relaunched CHR – KiSS 92.5 and 98.1 CHFI as Promotions Director. In less than a year, Karen became PD of KiSS working with The Roz & Mocha Show and spearheading live events; WHAM BAM, The Haus Party, headlined by Bruno Mars in his first Canadian appearance, and the National GRAMMYs team for radio.

Karen also helped develop the GEN NOW program with Seneca College providing college students with the opportunity to get hands-on experience on-air at KiSS. Under Karen’s leadership KiSS 92.5 won CHR station of the year: 2012, 2013 and 2014.

Karen went full circle in Programming going back to the 99.9 frequency with 99.9 Virgin Radio. In 2019 Karen rebuilt an on-air line-up and developed a new morning show with Virgin Mornings; Adam Wylde, TJ & Jax. In less than six months Virgin Radio was ranked #1 Adults 18-34 and the second most listened to station in Canada.

Karen has been honoured with PD of the Year at CMW, awarded the Grand Award at the NY Festivals for celebrating Diversity and Pride with the “Retrosexual Weekend”, and the CAB Award for her work with the 12 Hours of Christmas and Have a Heart for Sick Kids Radiothon in support of the Hospital for Sick Children.

Karen’s love of Promotions kicked off her radio career at 97.7 HTZ-FM as “Cruiser Girl” in 1990. Seven years later, she was promoted to PD and the first female PD in Standard Radio’s history.

Karen has worked to help mentor talent within the Bell Talent Development program and created “Empower Hour” – an hour of programming with all female rock star hosts and artists for International Women’s Day. An idea that rolled out Nationally across the Virgin Radio network in 2022.

In 2004, Blair Bartrem walked into Karen’s life at MIX 99.9. Literally, he walked into her office as the new PD of the MIX. In 2007 they married and have been co-creators in their personal and professional lives (when not competing) ever since.

Radio Trailblazers is a collaboration among women who love radio. They are a Canadian volunteer organization that celebrates and supports women in radio through education, inspiration, and mentorship.

Blackie And The Rodeo Kings Announce Blazing New Album ‘O Glory’ Set For Release July 8

0

One of North America’s most esteemed musical collectives, Blackie and the Rodeo Kings, have announced the release of their 11th studio album, O Glory, on July 8 (PRE-ORDER/SAVE/ADD). Lead single “O Glory Lost Those Blues Again” – a wistful corker powered by the testimonial hum of organ behind Tom Wilson and Colin Linden’s shared vocals – is available today, along with an official lyric video.

The band will hit the road for some summer festival shows and their own fall headlining Canadian tour, made up of some rescheduled dates plus newly announced dates. A complete list of shows already announced can be found below with a few more still to be announced in the coming weeks.

If any band was uniquely positioned to withstand the impossible demands made by despicable COVID-19, it was Blackie and the Rodeo Kings. The proof is in their blazing new album, O Glory. While much of the planet struggled to find new ways of working, singer/songwriter and guitarists Stephen Fearing, Colin Linden, and Tom Wilson coolly leveraged the flexibility that’s sustained them for 25 years, sheltering in their respective home bases of Victoria, BC, Nashville, TN, and Hamilton, ON, while using technology to bridge the chasm separating them from each other and from their rhythm section of Gary Craig and John Dymond.

With Linden producing from his Nashville digs, Blackie and the Rodeo Kings wrote and recorded 13 alternately roots-rock, folk, country, and Americana-style songs, ultimately crafting what Linden confirms is the band’s most “spiritual and political” musical statement to date.

Adds Fearing, “Like a lot of musicians, after the initial shock of the pandemic lockdown, the impetus became finding ways to connect with the world. Technology has come so far in the last few years, and it has made remote recording possible. I pounced on it. Colin gave me a lot of advice and took charge musically. It was then a matter of coming up with songs and getting them to each other.”

As they have since forming as a one-off to honour late folk hero Willie P. Bennett — continuing as smitten audiences demanded it — the JUNO Award–winning Blackie and the Rodeo Kings chase musical excellence while having a ball playing with their friends. Talk about a great gig.

Ed Sheeran Releases New Single “2step” Feat. Lil Baby

0

Global superstar Ed Sheeran has released “2step” feat. Lil Baby, a brand new version of the song off of his latest chart-topping, full length album “=” (listen HERE). Produced by Andrew Watt & Louis Bell (Post Malone, Justin Bieber), the single arrives alongside its official music video which was shot in Kyiv, Ukraine (watch HERE). Directed by NL Vossi (Stormzy ‘Vossi Bop’), the video transitions through slick choreography as Ed and his crew move across a cityscape backdrop.

Speaking about the video, Ed Sheeran says – “I filmed the video for 2step in the city of Kyiv, Ukraine before the devastating acts of violence started to take place. It was my first time visiting the country and I felt so welcomed during my stay there – everyone from the production crew to the many people I met across my days off. Ukraine is a proud and resilient country and I’m grateful to have had the chance to film my video there. I stand with Ukraine and will be donating my record royalties from YouTube streams of the video to the DEC’s Ukraine Humanitarian Appeal x”

The video’s Ukrainian production company, Radioaktivefilm, added – “This video really reminds us of the best of times; it was the last video we did before our world fell apart. Watching it gives us some normality and happiness, and we hope you enjoy this video as much as we do right now.”

Last month, not only did Ed perform at ITV’s Concert for Ukraine in Birmingham, England, but he also played a slew of intimate underplays in London (Electric Ballroom/Alexandra Palace Theatre) and Brighton (Concorde 2) ahead of his upcoming ‘+ – = ÷ x’ stadium tour (pronounced ‘The Mathematics Tour’), which kicks off in Dublin, Ireland, on April 23rd and will see Ed return to London’s Wembley Stadium for a five-night run in June/July. Outside of today’s single/video drop, Ed’s latest musical output comes in the form of a collaboration project with J Balvin following the recent releases of ‘Sigue’ and ‘Forever My Love’.

Elton John Madman Across The Water – 50th Anniversary Reissue Announced

0

UMe today announces the 50th-anniversary reissue of Elton John’s Madman Across The Water. Available to pre-order now on stunning 3-CD and 1 Blu-ray Super Deluxe Box Set, 4-LP, 1-LP Limited Edition colored vinyl, and 2-CD formats, the album will be released on June 10.

Spawning the hits “Tiny Dancer” and “Levon,” Madman Across The Water was Elton’s fourth studio album, released only two years after his debut. Recorded in 1971, it was a foundation stone of what was to become a dazzlingly prolific decade for the global-icon-in-waiting. Madman Across The Water was largely written after Elton had made his initial foray to America, offering the opportunity for lyricist Bernie Taupin to witness first-hand the landscapes and people he’d only seen on a screen or on the page. Recorded at Trident Studios in Central London in February and August 1971, it was the first album where all five players of Elton’s fabled band lineup (Dee Murray, Nigel Olsson, Davey Johnstone, and Ray Cooper) were featured. The album also featured Yes keyboardist Rick Wakeman, who plays Hammond organ on three songs.

A newly unveiled Piano Demo of “Tiny Dancer,” taken from the archives and previously unheard, will be available to stream in full later today Here. Watch a preview of the track now Here. Recorded at Dick James Studios in central London in Spring 1971, it is an intimate performance of the song with Elton alone at the piano as a guide for the band later to follow.

While the UK’s love affair with Elton was on the precipice of exploding upon Madman’s release at the start of the ’70s, these nine tracks immediately struck a chord with US audiences, reaching the Top 10 of the Billboard album charts. It also spawned two hit singles, “Levon” and “Tiny Dancer,” both reaching the US Top 50. After years as a best-kept secret to Elton’s fans, “Tiny Dancer” has gone on to become one of his most loved songs with his worldwide fanbase, third only to “Rocket Man” and “Your Song” in global streaming numbers. Capturing the headiness of California at the time of Elton’s first US concerts, the song was used to phenomenal effect in Cameron Crowe’s classic 2000 film Almost Famous. Both “Levon” and “Tiny Dancer” remain live favorites to this day, taking pride of place in the setlist for Elton’s record-breaking Farewell Yellow Brick Road tour.

The celebration of Madman Across The Water comes in four different formats. All formats contain Bob Ludwig’s 2016 remaster of the main album. There are 18 previously unreleased tracks across the Super Deluxe 3-CD/1-Blu-ray box set, which also contains rare, restored material from the era, piano demos of the album, and the audio of the BBC Sounds For Saturday concert, broadcast in 1972. The Blu-Ray contains a 5.1 mix by Greg Penny, plus the Sounds For Saturday and his 1971 Old Grey Whistle Test performance. The audio of the Super Deluxe CD/Blu-ray set will also be available on a 4-LP set. The box set includes photos, an essay with interviews with those who helped make the album, as well as memorabilia and artwork taken from the Rocket Archive. The album will also be available as a limited edition blue and white-colored 180g LP.

My Next Read: “Folk Music: A Bob Dylan Biography in Seven Songs” by Greil Marcus

0

Across seven decades, Bob Dylan has been the first singer of American song. As an artist, he has opened up the territory where Tony Bennett’s “Once Upon a Time” can be sung as if it is as much a folk song as his own “Blowin’ in the Wind,” as recited by a fictional Malcolm X. As a writer and performer, he has rewritten the songbook until the traditional and credited sources that might have been printed on the title pages fell away, and it is only a matter of who we are listening to.

Here Greil Marcus tells Dylan’s story through seven of his most transformative songs. Marcus’s point of departure is Dylan’s ability to “see myself in others.” The motor of his music is empathy: as at the beginning of his career in New York he spoke of writing a song about Emmett Till in the first person, nearly sixty years later he circled the globe as John F. Kennedy arguing with infinity as he waited between life and death.

Like Dylan’s songs, this book is a work of implicit patriotism and creative skepticism. It illuminates Dylan’s continuing presence in cultures, especially where such capacious imaginative identification with the other is in short supply. This is not only a deeply felt telling of the life and times of Bob Dylan, but a rich history of American folk songs and the new life they were given as Dylan sat down to write his own.
