Pet Shop Boys Announce First DVD and Double-CD Issue Of Discovery: Live In Rio 1994

0

Pet Shop Boys announce the release on DVD and 2-CD of their Discovery: Live in Rio 1994 concert, recorded towards the end of their 1994 tour of Singapore, Australia and Latin America. Release date is April 30th.

Previously only available on VHS, this is the first time that fans will be able to experience this classic concert on DVD and listen to the audio on CDs. The show was filmed by Brazilian director Roberto Berliner with a local TV crew in December 1994 in front of a wildly enthusiastic Rio audience on PSB’s first visit to Brazil.

The set list includes classic hits including ‘West End girls’, ‘Suburbia’, ‘Being Boring’, ‘Go West’, ‘Rent’ and ‘Always on my mind’, as well as surprising juxtapositions of PSB songs and contemporary hits including ‘One in a million’/‘Mr Vain’ and ‘Left to my own devices’/‘Rhythm of the night’. A cover of Blur’s ‘Girls and boys’ is another spirited highlight of this spectacular performance.

The DVD and CDs document a show very different in feel to the two ground-breaking tours that preceded it in 1989 and 1991. Following on from the release of their albums “Very” and “Disco 2”, Pet Shop Boys decided to focus the two-hour set largely on uplifting songs with a party vibe, taking inspiration from visits to the New York underground house club, the Sound Factory Bar. ‘Discovery’ saw Pet Shop Boys with four dancers, backing singer Katie Kissoon and two Latin percussionists embrace spontaneity in a way they never had before.

Chris Lowe said at the time: “We’re more free-spirited on this tour. We party on down. It’s not a totally choreographed, staged and rehearsed show. I suppose it is more rock ‘n’ roll in its attitude. You get to express yourself. (Laughs). And to take your clothes off.”

Neil Tennant added: “In the past we were always removed from the audience by theatrical convention. This time we are us onstage.”

A new booklet is packaged with the DVD and CDs, featuring candid on-tour photographs, an interview by Chris Heath conducted during tour rehearsals and an exclusive on-tour diary by Neil Tennant.

Florida’s Genre-Bending Shoegaze x Punk x Synthy Dream-Popsters MORNING TRIPS Release “My Parade”

0

An eclectic mix of genre-bending sounds pave the way for alt-pop band, the Morning Trips, and their new release, “My Parade.”

First on the scene in 2017, the Fort Walton Beach, Florida-based four-piece’s expansive sound has been described as by the Northwest Florida Daily News as “influenced by a gumbo of dream pop, shoegaze, R&B, and ‘80s music,” with founding punk-era nostalgia and saccharine synth mixed in for good measure.

The blend of comforting yet pulsating feelings ripple and resonate further with each riff; Morning Trips aim to be for all collections of people as they morph through soundscapes with their diverse approach to creating.

“We want to create a world with the same mentality of how we want to exist in the real world,” songwriter and band founder Brady Lynch shares. “We want to create open, progressive, and diverse music for people from all walks of life to find something of solace in.”

So far, their discography walks the talk; each track indeed serves as its own singular, stand-out ingredient, while landing as decidedly cohesive and complementary alongside counterparts in the stewpot. From dreamy R&B to electronic-influenced punk to bubbly synth-pop, 2020 singles “Follow the Blind,” “Saudade,” and “Di / Hi” followed earlier 2019 offerings of “Baby,” “Disobedience,” and 2018’s breakout debut, “Blue.”

“I was initially inspired by an almost naive approach to writing music on a laptop, if I’m honest,” Lynch recalls. “I started producing demos intended for a ‘traditional’ band sound in hopes to find members to round out a lineup.”

It worked; soon he was joined by Logan Clinkingbeard, James Amos, and Noah Townsend.“Turns out, those early laptop demos eventually paved the way to become the first Morning Trips tunes,” Lynch adds.

Morning Trips have seen a series of state-wide tours to the tune of 50+ shows, and nods from media far and wide, including but not limited to the UK’s Pastel Wasteland, South Africa’s Janglepophub, and America’s American Pancake, AAA Backstage.

Harmonium symphonique – Histoires sans paroles Goes Platinum In Canada – WITH ZERO MUSIC STREAMS

0

Released on December 3, Harmonium symphonique – Histoires sans paroles symphonique has now been certified Platinum record by Music Canada, a recognition highlighting 80,000 copies sold.  An impressive and truly historic feat, considering the double instrumental album is only available on a single platform, the Oziko online store.

This is the first time since 2013 an album has been certified Platinum in Canada solely based on a physical format.

Harmonium symphonique – Histoires sans paroles brings together the complete works of Harmonium, adapted and directed by Simon Leclerc and performed by the Orchestre symphonique de Montréal (OSM). Totaling more than 140 minutes of music, the album is co-produced by Serge Fiori and Simon Leclerc, under the artistic direction of Nicolas Lemieux, president of GSI Musique.

“Our team at GSI is thrilled by this achievement.  While the music industry is experiencing unprecedented upheaval, we have embarked upon an audacious gamble to establish a strategy based on technological innovations and to distribute this magnificent album without any intermediaries, in a completely autonomous procedure that offered impressive results. I would like to thank the public who have a unique relationship with the works of Harmonium and Serge Fiori.  Thank you also to the OSM and to the conductor and arranger Simon Leclerc, who took part in this exceptional musical adventure,” says Nicolas Lemieux, President of GSI Musique.

“The OSM is proud of this recognition which highlights the undeniable success of the unprecedented encounter between the timeless and poetic work of the Harmonium and the rich universe of the Orchestra. Since its foundation, the OSM is committed to make classical music more widely accessible. Thank you to our loyal public for being there and to all those who contributed to the achievement of this unique project!” says Madeleine Careau, Chief Executive Officer of the OSM

The album is available exclusively at www.harmoniumsymphonic.com, in a digital version, a double CD box set and a limited deluxe edition containing four 180 gram vinyl LPs.

Histoires sans paroles – Harmonium symphonique, a fantastic journey through timeless melodies.

12th Annual Light of Day Canada Festival Goes Online — February 19 & 20 featuring Tom Morello, Steve Earle, Jake Clemons + more

0

Tom Morello, Steve Earle, Jake Clemons, Ron James, Wayne Kramer, and Rusty Young are just a few of the over 50 artists set to take centre screen this month for the 12th Annual Light of Day Canada Online Festival this February 19th and 20th.

In its continued effort to raise funds for Parkinson’s disease and cancer research and care, Light of Day Canada will host a stand-out series of musicians starting at 7:00pm EST both evenings. Tickets are $25.00 per night, or $40.00 for the two via here.

After postponing 2020’s arena show with Canada’s Tim Hicks this past November, the Light of Day Canada team wanted to do something to keep moving forward. “We decided to do a virtual show with a mix of live and pre-recorded performances,” Light of Day Canada President Dave Rotella shares. “The response by the artists was so positive and overwhelming, that’s what led to adding a second night.

“Our first show in 2007 was at the old NFCVI auditorium in Niagara Falls,” he recalls. “While the shows have grown since then, our main goal has always been the same: to raise money for Parkinson’s disease and cancer, for both research and care.

“Together, we can all play a role in raising awareness and funds to assist those living with Parkinson’s and cancer, and to one day eradicate these horrific diseases. We thank our communities, our artists, and our volunteers for all of their support over the years!”

In partnership with the Light of Day Foundation, the Light of Day Canada Foundation for Parkinson’s Research and Care is a Canada Not-for-Profit Corporation which began in 2007 with two modest shows — one in Niagara Falls and one in Toronto ON. The success of the shows and the enthusiasm and support of the two communities helped expand the show to larger venues and eventually to Hamilton, Halifax, Kingston, and London — and now online.

In 2015, LOD Niagara was the highest attended show in Light of Day’s history. Over the years shows have included great artists, including Steve Earle, Blue Rodeo, John Cafferty & The Beaver Brown Band, Pat Travers, Ron Sexsmith, Gary U.S. Bonds, Sam Roberts Band, Willie Nile, Joe D’urso, Joe Gruschecky & The Houserockers, Jesse Malin, Southside Johnny & The Asbury Jukes, Marah, The Trews, Paul Langlois of the Tragically Hip, Tom Wilson and has been hosted by the likes of Vincent Pastore of the Sopranos, Rowdy Roddy Piper, Dave Hodge, and more.

As a result, the annual series of concerts have raised over $500,000 for Parkinson’s Research and Care distributing all of our profits over the years to Parkinson’s Canada, Light of Day Foundation (New Jersey), and most recently to the London Health Sciences Movement Disorder Centre, Queen’s University Neuroscience Studies in Kingston, the Steve Ludzik Parkinson’s Rehab Clinic at Hotel Dieu Shaver Hospital in St. Catharines ON, and now the Walker Cancer Clinic in support of the Niagara Health Foundation.

Compensation payouts for workers suffering major lung disease

0

Major lung disease can be encountered many years after the first hazardous dust exposure. Once the first symptoms appear, the disease can even be in the late stages. As the victim most likely to be unaware of the progressing disease, all workers with work experience in specific industries should have their conditions checked. The most fatal airway diseases are asbestosis and silicosis, which can be found in warehouses, stone-cutting manufactories, mines and constructions. Workers in these industries should ensure that their working equipment provides sufficient protection.

The worker’s loss is compensable; however, major lung and airway disease can last permanently and be painful. Under the laws, employers of these workplaces should provide equipment and gears sufficient to protect the worker from the hazardous dust. If the employer fails to do so, he/she can be charged with intentional negligence and will be liable for the worker’s injuries.

Workers compensation and lethal dust diseases

Asbestosis, silicosis and suchlike dust diseases can leave permanent damages on the respiratory system of the victim. On the other hand, laws give the option to claim compensation to the victim, which can be very beneficial for recovering the loss. The compensation mostly includes weekly payments for the victim whilst being off work due to the disease, payments for medical expenses and lump sum payment for impairment and decreased earning capacity.

The process can be confusing as the necessary investigation for the claim will include since the day of first dust exposure. Which means, the workers’ almost entire work history will be taken into consideration to determine the employer’s liability. However, this might not be necessary as workers compensation is based on the no-fault system and the worker can still receive compensation payments regardless of negligence that caused the injuries/diseases.

Employer’s liability in hazardous dust exposure

In no circumstances, the employees should be exposed to dust without necessary protective equipment. Additionally, not every equipment can be protective enough to dust exposure. The employers must make sure the equipment provided to workers is suitable for industrial usage. Silicosis and asbestosis are preventable to a large extent. As these diseases are preventable, it is expected of the employer to protect his/her workers just as a reasonable employer would. In workers compensation claims, the infected worker’s negligence isn’t taken into consideration whilst determining eligibility for compensation. However, the employer’s negligence can cause them trouble.

How to claim dust disease compensation

Depending on the uniqueness of the situation, the extent of the compensation that is to be awarded might differ. Generally, compensation includes monetary damages to cover the victim’s loss. Such dust diseases are known for leaving permanent damages on the victim. Due to the victim’s loss in the functions of organs, the victim might not be able to work and earn in the foreseeable future. The aim of the compensation is to provide lump sum payment to workers whose capacity to earn has reduced drastically and with permanent impairment.

Evaluation of the infected worker’s impairment, capacity to perform daily exercises independently and reaching a conclusion to determine the compensable loss can be a long process. The claimant should give a huge effort to the claim and support his/her claim with documents and evidence that can shorten the process. On the other hand, a dust disease lawyer can also follow the process for you, lead you through the process and once necessary, fight for your rights.

Luckily in Australia, workers suffering injuries can benefit from a lawyer’s services free of charge as Workers Compensation Independent Review Office – WIRO covers the lawyer fees to support workers in need.

Toronto’s Ebhoni Drops New Single “X-Ting”

0

Emerging as a global force of nature, 21-year-old Toronto-born singer and songwriter Ebhoni shares a simmering and striking new single entitled “X-Ting” today. This time around, she fuses an island bounce with a bop-worthy hook as she delivers as a lusty ode to an ex with charisma, confidence, and Caribbean vibes.

Just last month, she returned with “Hit This.” In addition to a plug from Pitchfork, HotNewHipHop wrote, “Ebhoni has been one artist to keep an eye out for in the 6ix,” and The Root described it best by claiming, “The song makes you feel like you’ve been sipping on a fancy cocktail for the last few hours.” It’s no wonder FLAUNT crowned her “Our favorite new R&B artist.”

Right now, she’s channeling all of these bad gyal vibes into her debut EP—coming this year.

Over the last few years, Ebhoni’s string of animated, confident R&B singles has won both commercial and critical success. In the middle of a productive 2019 run, Pitchfork wrote that she is “reclaiming the Toronto R&B crown for women.” Throughout her career, Ebhoni’s made a point to partner specifically with Black-owned businesses, support other women artists and workers, and to uplift the local LGBTQ+ community, which she’s done through efforts like hosting Pride Toronto. Ebhoni is a must-follow.

Synth-Popper GRUMPY KITTY BOY Confronts Reality in Striking New “Blue Eyes” Single

0

Award-nominated and internationally esteemed Toronto-based artist Juro Kim Feliz’s synth-pop alter ego Grumpy Kitty Boy personifies the plight of people who need to let go of the past, live in the present, and look after themselves further ahead in this, his new single, “Blue Eyes” — available now.

With a sentiment surrounding ‘but who am I? I’ll never know,” Grumpy Kitty Boy’s story surrounds feeling lost while singing about things that “don’t make sense,” Feliz explains. “He seems to suffer from amnesia while living in his ‘Unwanted’ adoption box, and sings about things like the night sky, zodiac signs, shattered TV screens, horizon lines…”

Juxtaposed within a cutesy, video game-esque visual world within the video, these lyrical twists wind to the fact that Grumpy Kitty Boy admits to not seeing reality ahead of him. “It is therefore not a case of amnesia,” Feliz offers. “He’d rather avoid past lives that now take over his destiny.

“The chorus of ‘Blue Eyes’ came together in my mind while waiting for a bus on a winter day,” the Toronto-based artist continues, recalling. “The exhausting routine of taking 1.5 hour-long commutes to work freezes one’s perception of time and space. You lose control of things as others take the wheel — for better or worse.

“There’s a parallel in the present day as the world continually faces the ongoing pandemic.

“Many of us have probably resigned ourselves into realities in which we feel stuck,” he adds. “Unlike Grumpy Kitty Boy though, I tried taking matters into my own hands instead of losing myself. Years later, I’m now past beyond enduring life in Canada as a foreigner with very few safety nets and privileges. Those imposing ‘Blue Eyes’ keep staring back, though, as if they know something I still don’t.”

The release is a striking preview to Grumpy Kitty Boy’s forthcoming debut EP, Show Me The Kibbles — set to land February 26th, 2021. Where many artists might boldly assert statements of who they are in a breakthrough release, Feliz notes he’s made a u-turn instead. “Grumpy Kitty Boy’s fictional universe exposes this resignation towards an identity crisis, disguised as amnesia with a dramatic flair,” he adds. “All ego set aside, we now ask, ‘who is he anyway?’

“Maybe — just maybe —,” he continues, “he could have been you, me, or anyone else stuck in the past who fears facing the future that stares back at them.

“Everyone has an inner ‘grumpy’ in them who lost one’s sense of self at a point in time.”

Featured in Tinnitist, Canadian Beats, Cashbox Canada, Record World, and more, “Blue Eyes” and Show Me The Kibbles continue along themes Feliz has been artfully reckoning with for some time. “Switching gears in life is a tough choice to make,” he confides. “Arriving in Montreal from Manila as a student in December of 2013, the struggle to feel secure and find a place to call home became a recurring theme for me throughout the years.

“As I focused on my art as a contemporary music composer, other opportunities came to expand the boundaries of my world,” he continues. “Eventually gaining Canadian permanent status after more than six years, the decision to switch directions and develop a singer/songwriter career felt like a fresh start in living life.”

With studies completed at the University of the Philippines and McGill University, Feliz has performed across Asia, Europe and North America as a heralded contemporary classical composer. He was nominated for a 2019 Golden Balangay Award for Excellence for Music and Entertainment, and has been a resident artist of the Brush Creek Foundation for the Arts (2018), the Kimmel Harding Nelson Center for the Arts (2019), and a library resident of the Canadian Music Centre Ontario (2018 – 2020). Once co-hosting and producing the radio talk show Sigaw ng Bayan (2014-2016) at CKUT 90.3 FM Montreal, he started leaning towards music journalism and has written for the Canadian Music Centre Ontario and the magazine Musicworks.

A long-time pianist and keyboardist, Feliz soon honed in on songwriting as his sonic vehicle of choice. “It’s the most appropriate channel to express my world view,” he muses. “I figure: Be authentic! Embrace the grumpy!”

Harnessing the pull towards video game music and inspirations from The Midnight, Radiohead, Porcupine Tree, Sufjan Stevens, and Owl City’s synth pop sound, for example, Feliz started producing instrumental tracks in lieu of forming a band. “That process caters well to my composer instincts,” he shares. “This is an opportunity to express the ‘grumpy life’ through an alter-ego’s fictional eyes.”

It was the latch onto the pouting cat emoji that is Grumpy Kitty Boy, however, whose ‘world’ would become “as clear as daylight,” he says. “Through this, I can tell stories and be in touch with real, deep feelings about reality that’s often left ignored and suppressed in people’s conception of emanating positivity in life.”
