Toronto’s MARCUS HARAN Brings Trap-Soul and Hip Hop to the “Otherside” in New Single

0

Once again showing he’s unafraid to broach topics others fear to tread, Toronto’s trap-soul hip hop artist Marcus Haran drops his new single, “Otherside” — available now.

In this case, it’s themes of addiction, abuse, and mental health, and it’s a stunning revisit to Haran’s very real, very raw lyrical storytelling roots found throughout his breakthrough LP — Marcus Haran: A True Story. a Soundscape to in-Difference. (2018). The 10-track conceptual album of jazzy, velvet vox was rife with truth-telling, touching on his life story being a Parisian-born Sri Lankan refugee, having vitiligo, and painful childhood memories of being used as a drug mule, and experiences with depression and abuse.

“This is a tragic love ballad,” he offers of “Otherside.” “It’s me telling the story of a fatal attraction between two people in love, but also the relationship between someone and the addiction that loves them.

“Making the music video for this was an emotional experience for everyone involved,” Haran shares. “Especially the actors portraying the two main characters: some reactions weren’t always an act…”

Featured on CP24, Breakfast Television, and more, and in addition to Marcus Haran: A True Story. a Soundscape to in-Difference., singles released throughout 2019 – 2021 included “Hot Boy from Sri Lanka,” “Alejandro,” “Nike,” “Ski-Doo,” “K-Ci & JoJo,” and “Whole Ting.” Between them all, Haran deftly dips between styles with inherent ease, ultimately landing in a sound all his own.

“There’s the art and grit of Paris, and there’s the hip hop representing the street and cultural tones of my Sri Lankan Tamil heritage,” he explains. “There were tracks that were a ‘departure’ from my last album, a more fun, witty and clever side of me; I’ve let go of all my worries and neglects and created music in more of a dark, comical side that showed more of my sins, thoughts and upbringing.

“The new sound is Toronto. It is Canada. It is the world where everyone is welcomed.

“Although addiction, abuse, and mental illness in general are topics addressed in ‘Otherside,’ I also wanted to highlight recovery through understanding that there are options. My hope for this video is, if someone recognizes the situation, they can get help — whether for someone they love, or for themselves.”

Who Buys Severely Damaged Cars?

0

If in your garage, you have a broken down car or one that has had some breakage following an accident, know that it is still quite possible to resell it at a good price. To help you, here are some tips not to be missed regarding this type of car buyback. You can get the best cash for damaged cars with the best shop.

Turn to an individual

The sale of cars between individuals is not a new thing. A buyer can be interested in a car by its brand, its range or the space it offers no matter what state it is in. However, before selling your car to an individual, you need to know its general condition. If the shutdown of your car was caused by an accident, you must make a technical visit dating back less than 6 months (after the accident) to assess any damage and then report it to the possible buyer. This will allow the buyer to have a guarantee against hidden defects. The only problem with this method is the price which may be revised downwards. No that you can get the best amount of cash for junk cars you can enjoy the results.

Professionals are ready to buy back your car

There is currently a type of professional who is ready to buy back your broken down or damaged car as quickly as possible and at a competitive price: used car export experts like the car repurchase company. Indeed, regardless of the state of your vehicle, you no longer have to worry about it because this kind of company buys it as is to export it to other countries. However, you must be well informed in order to know all the procedures to follow with the company of your choice. As we buy scrap cars with the best price you can expect the best results for your selling ideas.

There is also another solution if you have chosen to do business with professionals, turn to car scrap yards or a garage that could very well buy back your broken down or damaged car. This allows you to avoid technical checks, however, do not think that you are going to get a good price for it. These companies buy back your car at a price below normal depending on the condition of your car. Ask your friends or do an online consultation to find the professionals who could offer you the best prices.

Insurance can buy back your car provided that

In such a situation, taking advantage of your insurance can be advantageous. If you own a damaged car and want to resell it, insurance can offer you a good price. However, insurance does not buy back just any car. Before buying back a damaged car, it must assess and estimate whether the repair costs are greater than its value. If the case arises and your car is repairable, the insurance may offer you an offer. But if your wrecked cars are considered irreparable, not only will the insurance abandon its buy-back request, but you may also no longer be able to sell it to anyone. So, it is a risk to take.

Hamilton, ON’s Emma Rush & Sara Traficante’s Azuline Duo Release Sophomore Album, Fandango

0

Following their 2016 debut, Romanza: The Music of Spain and South America, Azuline Duo — the Hamilton-based ensemble — has just released its eagerly awaited sophomore album, Fandango. The record features 15 unique performances of music by some of the world’s finest classical composers, including Gerald Garcia and Santiago De Murcia.

The classical/folk-inspired ensemble features two award-winning, versatile musicians: guitarist Emma Rush and flutist Sara Traficante. In their career together, the two have always aimed to push the boundaries of their instruments and conventional programming with unusual and rarely heard repertoire and a dynamic onstage presence that engages audiences right from the very first note. They are a sonic force to be reckoned with.

Fandango includes Azuline Duo’s take on two works by the renowned Brazilian musician Chiquinha Gonzaga: “Lua Branca” and “Atraente.” “When we’re writing arrangements, we love finding all the different ways to use our instruments to bring the music to life — whether it’s singing through the flute, or recording percussion on the guitar,” they said. “Anything goes!”

For the grand finale of this exciting new album, the talented women incorporated some music by Canadian classical guitarist, Jeff McFadden with the premier recording of his work “Aguardiente.” On playing music by the famed Hamilton composer, Azuline Duo said “it was thrilling” to be able to feature the tune and have the added opportunity to add some vocals into the mix.

Before the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, Azuline Duo toured regularly across North America and lived by their mission of bringing exciting live classical music to venues across Canada and the United States. From the small nooks of Vancouver Island to the concert stage in Texas, the ambitious duo have covered a lot of territory and continue to make a lasting impression on exhilarated audiences across the continent.

Through the continuously increasing restrictions on social gatherings and events, Azuline Duo has been live streaming concerts for the Philadelphia Guitar Society, Guitarfest West and various other organizations.

Outside of Azuline Duo, Emma and Sara both actively pursue their own musical endeavours. Sara is not only a founding member of genre-bending trio Vox Metropolis, but she is heavily in demand as a clinician and collaborator on projects from traditional classical to film scores and indie rock. She even plays all flutes and whistles on CBC and Netflix’s “Anne with an E.”

Emma, on the other hand, has just released her third solo album. It’s called Wake the Sigh and is a showcase of relatively unknown female-written guitar compositions of the 19th century, including works from Emilia Giuliani, Delores de Goñi and Julie Fondard. Though she’s not been able to tour to help promote the record, she has made regular appearances at major guitar festivals in the past, in countries like Germany, Mexico, Sweden, China, the U.S. and Canada.

The two virtuoso performers are also part of the faculties of two of Hamilton’s most prestigious institutes: Sara at McMaster University and Emma at Mohawk College. On top of that, their musical efforts have been supported individually by not only the Canada Council for the Arts, but the Ontario Arts Council, Hamilton City Enrichment Fund and FACTOR.

From Child TV Host to Military-Style Boot Camps to Music: Indianapolis’ CLOUDY WINGZ Releases “Papi Chulo”

0

Haitian-American rapper, songwriter, investor, and Indianapolis, Indiana-based entrepreneur Cloudy Wingz — William Clark — releases new single, “Papi Chulo” — available now.

The song is the first to land ahead of his forthcoming debut album, Culture Shock — set for release this Spring.

“This is my first album so I wanted to make the best music possible, of course, but I also wanted to experiment with different styles in order to create something that all different walks of life can hold onto for years to come,” he explains. “I wanted to rap straight bars from the heart, and stay true to hip hop while also touching on subjects like growth, love, sacrifice, dedication, disloyalty, wins, losses, inspirations, anger, and death.

The release draws on inspiration from Cloudy Wingz’ storied life, while giving listeners the opportunity to get to know him on many different levels.

Cloudy Wingz is a rapper, songwriter, investor, and entrepreneur with a remarkable life story rife with trial and triumph. Originally from Port au Prince, Haiti, he was adopted into America at age three after the majority of his biological family were murdered, or passed away from natural disasters and causes.

His early days in his adoptive home were filled with music, travel, and time as a child TV host. A series of events — including his adoptive mother and him fleeing abuse, finances in the home being tight, and a series of stays in detention centres, group homes, therapeutic care centres, military-themed boot camps, and psychiatric offices couched as ‘tough love’ — would soon find Clark at odds with which path he was walking: on one hand, there was an array of music, business, and sports aptitude — including a proficiency at football that seemed to stick enough for a shot at state championships.

On the other, legal troubles for stealing, drug dealing, and weapons possession began to stack in his wake. After facing lengthy sentences in a federal penitentiary twice, and an ultimate plea deal, Cloudy Wingz turned his attention back to his initial love and penchant for business and music for good.

“I wanted to use Culture Shock to formally introduce myself and my story to the world while connecting with them through my own struggles,” he shares. “My approach was to take bad energy and good energy and project them into the world as an expression of poetry in trap form.

“Music is something that should evoke thoughts and emotion, but also be enjoyed.”

Muleba, Tanzania’s Genre-Busting ALEX KAJUMULO Charity Single: “All Lives Matter: One Love is the Law (Revolution)”

0

This past month, Tanzanian genre-busting musician Alex Kajumulo released a single for charity called “All Lives Matter: One Love is the Law (Revolution).” The song has an infectious beat that immediately brings you into the heart of the music as it shares Kajumulo’s powerful message.

“We may be different colours, but we are all the same people,” he says of his concept for the song, inspired from the challenges he sees people having around the world, and the struggles he has seen his children experience. “The key thing is love, respect, and understanding. We are from one foundation. We have one common interest, to live and to die. Nature controls all of us the same way. It doesn’t care about colour.”

Also performing on the song are vocalists Fela Yepassis-Zembrou and Paris Randall. Leif Totusek provided all bass and guitar tracks. David Baca served as the drummer, and Anil Prasad played the tabla—the infamous 18th-century percussion instrument. It was recorded and mixed by Matt Loewen and mastered by Kevin Younkins.

Though the Muleba-based musician has been performing the song worldwide for well over a decade, it wasn’t until last month that he officially released it. The song is available for purchase on its Bandcamp page. Alternatively, Alex’s fans can donate to receive a digital download of the upbeat and inspirational track.

Alex’s music possesses a spirit of unity and peace with contagious hooks that will stick in your heart and soul. Alex’s music’s message is that we are all together, one love, regardless of ethnicity, gender, religion, race, and sexual orientation.

The veteran singer and activist lives by his motto: “Do something to make a change, don’t do something to be a hero.” Alex’s music is regularly released and sold for charity relief to serve the people in his home country. One hundred percent of the time, 100% of the musician’s proceeds go towards sports programs, scholarships for underprivileged children, and causes to increase all people’s rights and freedoms.

Before COVID-19 swept the world off its feet, Alex toured extensively between Washington, Vancouver, and Africa. Broadly talented, Alex not only does vocals but also produces, mixes, and writes music. He won the International Songwriting Competition 10 times. In 2020, he won Best African Band of the year. Notably, Alex produced “Cool James” Dandu’s acclaimed album, “CI Massive: African Most Wanted”—a big hit across Eastern Africa.

In addition to “All Lives Matter: One Love is the Law (Revolution),” the rest of Alex Kajumulo’s extensive and inspirational back-catalogue is now available via the Kaju Media page on Bandcamp.

Folk Singer/Songwriter KATE KOENIG Brings New Spirit to 2021 Sophomore Album, Etemenanki

0

Brooklyn, NY’s Kate Koenig is a very hungry experimental-folk caterpillar that eats Fleet Foxes’ progressivism and Kate Bush’s iconoclasticism and Jeff Buckley’s zeal and Leonard Cohen’s disenchantment, and is still eating while you read this line. She’s an experimental folk singer/songwriter who is bringing new spirit to a tiring season with her sophomore album Etemenanki — available now.

The new album features 40 minutes of contemplative, cinematic, and inventive compositions, some of which are influenced by Middle Eastern tonalities.

Etemenanki is a concept album that is written from a place of great emotional and spiritual introspection, but at the same time, doesn’t take itself too seriously. It’s an aural folktale: Each song is told from the perspective of a mythological creature of Koenig’s own invention that goes by the tongue-in-cheek name of Bʌfdɔg (pronounced “Buff Dog”). The creature has existed at every time there has been and ever shall be, and as every person who has been and ever shall be. Some songs are sung by Bʌfdɔg themselves, while others are sung from the perspective of individuals whom Bʌfdɔg has embodied.

The title of the new album is taken from the name of a Babylonian ziggurat that was constructed with the aim of reaching the heavens — and is speculated to have inspired the story of the Tower of Babel. The title track, “Etemenanki,” is sung by a homeless woman losing her mind in Babylon, and references the god Marduk, to whom the temple was dedicated.

“Part of my style has always been to meet ‘serious’ with ‘silly,’” says Koenig. “Bʌfdɔg is an overwhelmingly sad creature, but because of their silly name, they’re also supposed to be cute; the name hints at a sense of playfulness behind the sadness.”

The album was written in its entirety in the first two weeks of the New York City COVID-19 lockdown that began in March 2020. While house-sitting for a friend in their secluded 4th-floor apartment, Koenig sat down each night and completed a new song.

Over the following few months, she used the quiet space to record the album in full, then spent the summer and early fall producing and arranging. With the exception of bass, drums, cello, and the percussion featured on “Fell to stone,” every instrument heard on the album is performed by Koenig. The cello featured on “Oh, how I’ve loved you” was performed by Lara Brodsky (Lenny Pickett, Candido, Mos Def) and the percussion on “Fell to stone” was performed by Jeff Mann of jazz fusion trio Consider the Source.

“Many of the songs are meant to capture the exhaustion that comes with long-term depression,” says Koenig, who suffers from mental illness. She’s also known to be an advocate for mental health awareness, a mission she makes a part of her live performances, where she is intently open about her personal struggles. “It’s hard enough to live with mental illness let alone to live with shame about it,” she says. “I’ve always believed that sharing actively about my own mental health can help to normalize the topic of conversation for others. I want to live in a world where people can say they’re not feeling well mentally and it inspires compassion and understanding from others.”

Most visited places in Singapore

0

Singapore welcomes many visitors each year. Some choose to visit for just a few days while some uses Singapore to transit to other cities in South East Asia like Bangkok. Nevertheless, Singapore is worth a stop and for the first time visitor, this is a list of top five must visit places in Singapore.

Esplanade: Performances and Much More

Located close to the iconic Merlion, the Esplanade is the place to go to for performances. The design of the building is also unique and the locals have quickly nicknamed it the “Durian” due to its similarity to the spikes of the King of Fruits. Visitors to the Esplanade can choose to purchase tickets for musicals, ballets, orchestra performances and so on. At certain times, free performances are also made available.

Orchard Road: The Shopping Haven

Shopaholics who travel to Singapore must visit this famous shopping street. Here, they will find high-end shopping centres like Paragon and Ngee Ann City. For those who are on a tighter budget, shopping can be done at Far East Plaza which is a complicated shopping centre with many small shops which sell a variety of hip and fashionable clothes, particularly suited for the younger crowd. During festive seasons such as Christmas, Orchard Road is also well decorated and brightly lit at night.

Jurong Bird Park, The Zoo and the Night Safari: Animal Shows and Exhibits

These attractions are located close to one another and would make a perfect day out. The Bird Park or Zoo is well landscaped and offers an interesting opportunity to get close to the animals. The Night Safari is also a renowned attraction and provides each tourist with the opportunity to witness nocturnal animals from the comfort of a tram.

Geylang: Singapore’s Red-Light District

Singapore is generally thought of as a strict and a follow-the-rules country. However, there is an area in Singapore which is designated as a red-light district. Here, tourists have the opportunity to see a different and more chaotic Singapore. Besides that, this area is also well known for its delicious street food. Examples include Frog’s Leg Porridge and Beef Kway Teow (flat, rice noodles).

Sentosa: Watersports, Nightlife and More to Come

With the recent opening of the Resorts World managed by Genting Singapore, more and more visitors are expected. As of now, the casino and the Universal Studios theme park is yet to open and meanwhile online casinos in Singapore can be enjoyed. However, even without these two attractions, Sentosa offers more than enough tourist attractions to keep visitors excited for an entire day. Those who love the beach can swim or visit the Wave House. Those who prefer to stay dry can visit The Luge and the Underwater World. After the sun has set, there will be the Songs of the Sea, a laser and music performance, and also beach bars to hang out at. A popular bar there would be Cafe del Mar.

Singapore’s tourist attractions are of course not restricted to the five listed above. Nevertheless, for travellers who are only here on a short holiday, these five recommendations are a great start to “Uniquely Singapore”. And with an efficient public transportation system, travelling around Singapore is cheap and convenient.

Travelling Around Singapore

In Singapore, the public transportation system can be broadly divided into three. There are public buses, trains and the taxis. Using these options, travellers and locals can reach most destinations in Singapore easily and cheaply.

Public Buses: Connects Suburban Areas

Locals frequently use public buses to travel within Singapore. This is because not everyone lives next to a MRT station. Moreover, popular tourist attractions such as the Jurong Bird Park and Zoo cannot be reached by MRT. Off the beaten path attractions such as Pulau Ubin are also only reachable by bus.

Fares for a single bus ride start from S$0.64 onwards for non-airconditioned buses and S$0.67 onwards for airconditioned buses. When planning to take buses, it is important to pay attention to the waiting times. During non-peak periods, the wait could be as long as 15 minutes.

The MRT: Convenient and Easy to Navigate

Local trains include both the Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) and the Light Rail Transit (LRT). Most MRT stations are linked to bus interchanges. This allows visitors to change from one form of public transport to another conveniently. At the interchanges, there are also some food stalls where one can stop for breakfast or even lunch or dinner before heading to another destination.

Currently, there are four different MRT lines in operation in Singapore. They include the East West, North South, North East and Circle Line. This network covers a large portion of the city. For places which cannot be reached by MRT, travellers can switch to public buses or flag down a cab. However, in future, the need to take other transport options will be reduced as the MRT network will be further expanded when construction of other Lines such as the Downtown Line is completed.

Taxis: The Fastest but Most Expensive Option

Among these three options, taking a taxi is definitely the most expensive. However, if travelling in a group, this may be more comfortable. Furthermore, if visitors have loads of shopping bags to carry after shopping at Orchard Road or Bugis, it would be a good choice to flag down a taxi. Besides that, for those who are travelling from the west of the island to the eastern side, or vice versa, it could take almost two hours by MRT or bus. Thus, a taxi ride is definitely a good choice.

When taking taxi rides, do take note that during peak periods there are Electronic Road Pricing (ERP) charges if entering areas such as the Central Business District area. The ERP was installed to discourage driving during busy hours and thus reduce traffic jams.

Online Guides to Travelling Within Singapore

There are various websites which enable travellers to plan trips and determine travelling time and costs. The TransitLink website allows visitors to check which buses to take and MRT stations to stop at to reach specific places of interest.

For people who have a better idea of where to head to, the gothere website is easier to use. Users are only required to type in their destination address and current location to obtain directions. Other information such as duration of the trips and the costs are also provided.

It is common for tourists to plan extensively for travel to another country. However, if Singapore is part of one’s travel itinerary, then there will be no problems with local travel as the public transportation system in Singapore is reliable and easy to use.

Just go to Settings -> Devices & Connections -> choose Accessories -> Configure. You can set up different combinations of controls for each profile. This way, you get to enjoy different control schemes for different genres of games.

Saving Power

Saving power will increase your console life and decrease your electricity consumption as well.

The time console will take before shutting itself off can be manually set up by you. Just go to Settings -> General -> Power Mode & Startup. If you wish to control your Xbox remotely, then enable the option “Instant-on,” and if you wish to save power, select the “Energy-Saving” option.

You can transfer your games from an old Xbox to the new one. First make sure that both consoles are connected to the same network. Then on your new Xbox, go to Settings -> System -> Backup and Transfer -> Network Transfer, select your old console, pick the things you wish to copy over, and then choose the copy selected to start the process.

Controlling the console with Alexa or Google Assistant

If you wish to remotely control your console and perform tasks such as starting the game, pausing the movie, or turning it on and off, then you simply need to follow the steps below.

Open Settings -> Devices & Connections -> Digital Assistants. Select “Enable digital assistants.” After you have gone through the instructions and linked either Alexa or Google Assistant with your console, you will be able to control it remotely.

Break-time reminder

Keeping track of time is very difficult during console gaming. We have all been through that point in our life, where we just forget about everything and continue to play the game till our body gives up.

There is a solution now. You can set up reminders to take a break. Open up Settings -> Preferences -> Break Reminder. You can set up the reminder for every 30 minutes or up to 2 hours. At the time you specified, you will be notified about the break by a pop-up notification.

Internet Usage

If your Internet Service Provider caps your internet access, then there is a way to know how much internet is being used by your console, just for an idea about usage.

Go into Settings -> Network -> Network Settings -> Bandwidth usage. This will not stop you from using the internet, but as we said earlier, it gives you an idea of where you stand.

Xbox Application

If you haven’t downloaded the Xbox mobile application till now, then do it. It is available on App Store and Google Play Store.

The application provides many features like allowing you to chat with your friends, purchasing different games and downloading them remotely, accessing your saved screenshots and gameplay video so that you can share them easily with friends and family.

Optimize the right display settings

It is a wise decision to check the display settings once in a while. Just to make sure that your console is operating at the best possible display resolution and frame rate.

Go to settings -> TV & Display menu to verify the resolution and frame rate. If you are unsure about your TV being able to support a specific setting, then try it out. In case it doesn’t work, then the system will automatically revert to the best default setting after 20 seconds.

It’s Up to “You & I”: BLACK CREEK REIGN Join Forces with Platinum-Selling DANNY FERNANDES in New Single

0

In a pairing for the modern ages, award-winning Canadian funk-pop reggae-rockers Black Creek Reign have collaborated with multi-Platinum, multi-award winning and SiriusXM Artist of the Year Danny Fernandes in this, their new single “You & I” — available now.

With a sound that beckons back to the glory days of guitar-centric bar rock — we’re talking inspirational nods to the likes of Santana, Hendrix and Chicago — Black Creek Reign and members Darren Armoogam and Lex Stultz add this powerful dance-pop track to their now-signature blend of rock, funk, with dashes of reggae, pop and jazz.

The track and collaboration are the latest in a steady stacking of successes: Winners of Raising the Roof / Revival Bar’s Battle of the Bands, and runner up in the following year’s Ultimate Champion rematch, songs from Black Creek Reign’s debut EP Excommunicado and recent singles “All I Ever Wanted (This Year)” and “The Rain” were heard across radio and playlists nationwide, and heralded by the likes of Canadian Beats, Indie Pulse, Buzz Music, and more. With hundreds of live performances under their belt — including the final show at Toronto’s Hard Rock Cafe, Hollywood’s infamous Pig N’ Whistle, Pearson Airport’s YYZ Live, and the Los Angeles Songwriter’s Association — the trio has taken the stage from Nashville, to Los Angeles, and back to their hometown of Toronto.
