Acclaimed, Grammy-Nominated Artist Mary Gauthier To Release Her First Book SAVED BY A SONG on July 6th

0

On July 6th, Grammy-nominated, award-winning singer/songwriter Mary Gauthier will add “author” to her list of accomplishments with the release of her first book Saved By A Song: The Art and Healing Power of Songwriting (St. Martin’s Essentials). Part memoir, part musical spirit guide, Gauthier shares her incredible story and how the redemptive power of songs and songwriting can inspire and heal.

Saved By A Song: The Art and Healing Power of Songwriting is about learning life’s lessons after living in the fire, some circumstantial and some self-imposed, and how those lessons shaped Gauthier, her views on humanity and how we are all connected. The book covers both ends of the emotional spectrum and so much of the in between. From addiction, abandonment and loss to compassion, empathy, kindness and ultimately triumph, Gauthier’s story is truly inspirational.

An Americana Music Association Award-winner, Mary Gauthier’s 2018 release Rifles & Rosary Beads received a Grammy nomination for Best Folk Album. The emotional and powerful album was co-written with U.S. veterans and their families and served to help them cope with the trauma they all experienced both abroad and at home. The album won “Album Of The Year” at the International Folk Music Awards (Folk Alliance) and Gauthier was awarded the Americana Music Association UK “International Artist Of The Year” award in 2019.

James Announce New Album “All The Colours Of You” Coming Out June 4

0

UK alternative band James are proud to announce the release of their new album All The Colours Of You on June 4, 2021 via Virgin Music Label & Artist Services (formerly Caroline International). Recorded in part before the Covid pandemic struck, the album was produced by the Grammy award-winning Jacknife Lee (Taylor Swift, U2, REM’s, Snow Patrol, The Killers). Fans can hear the title track “All The Colours Of You” on all streaming services now.

The songs on the new album were directly influenced by what bandleader and frontman Tim Booth experienced during a nearly apocalyptic time; with the pandemic raging while wildfires burned so close to Booth’s home that he had to evacuate three times over the course of a few months. The lyrics reflect the intense emotions Booth was experiencing, living as an expat in Los Angeles as the US was buffeted by ever-increasing political chaos in the last year of Trump’s presidency.

Matching the energy of the lyrics, producer Jacknife Lee brought a fresh approach to James’ sound, working remotely from his studio with Booth (Lee’s Topanga Canyon neighbor) and liaising in a daisy chain with fellow band member Jim Glennie, reimagining their demos, and capturing the band in all their virtual glory.

The result is a record with the most arena ready tracks of their 38-year career, the sound of one of Britain’s best bands, deconstructed and reassembled by one of the world’s most renowned producers.

Tim Booth says “With all the shit that went down in 2020 this was a miraculous conception and another big jump forward for us on the back of the last three albums. I hope it reflects the colours of these crazy times. Sweet 16 is a proper album, no fillers and is up there with our best.”

Bassist Jim Glennie says “I’m pleased, proud and surprised by this record in equal amounts. Jacknife has pushed us and the songs somewhere new and it’s very exciting. After all these years, we are still challenging ourselves and our fans.”

From the first line on album opener “ZERO”, ‘We’re all gonna die’, Tim addresses many difficult subjects throughout the 11 tracks, with themes ranging from politics and climate change, to dealing with the loss of a loved one during the pandemic.

Lead track “All The Colours Of You” tackles the Trump years head on. Based in the US for many years, Tim witnessed first-hand the divisiveness and hatred stoked by the former President. Highlighting the sharp rise of white supremacy during his reign, the track ultimately offers a glimmer of hope, a new and brighter future with the refrain ‘Love all the colours, all the colours of you’.

“Beautiful Beaches” focuses on the fires that ravaged California over the summer and came distressingly close to Tim and his family’s home. The song came after a vision Tim had of an earthquake and fires, which caused his family to race for refuge on beautiful beaches ‘That life we left behind, we’re racing down to those beautiful beaches’.

“Recover” is perhaps the most poignant track on the record, dealing with the death of Tim’s father-in-law from Covid-19 in the UK. A hopeful track, with a delicate production, it’s an uplifting and joyful song about honouring a loved one’s legacy and spirit, a celebration of life not the sadness of death ‘We will remember how to pass your spirit on’.

Since their breakthrough single in 1991, “Sit Down”, James have released fifteen studio albums, selling over 25 million copies in the process, and performed countless headline shows and festivals across the world. Many in the US will know James from their 1993 hit “Laid” which charted on the Billboard Hot 100, was featured as the theme song to the American Pie movies and has appeared numerous times in film and tv over the years. They continue to be a huge live draw, having sold 60,000 tickets for a UK arena tour scheduled for this November and December; a tour which has sold faster than any previous James tour. Their last US tour dates were a 2019 sold out, national run of shows with the Psychedelic Furs.

James are British music’s enduring gem. Says Booth, “The truth is we felt we were built to last.”

The Who Sell Out – Super Deluxe Edition Of The Classic Groundbreaking Album, Available April 23

0

Initially released in December 1967 and described latterly by Rolling Stone as ‘The Who’s finest album’ The Who Sell Out reflected a remarkable year in popular culture. As well as being forever immortalised as the moment when the counterculture and the ‘Love Generation’ became a global phenomenon and ‘pop’ began metamorphosing into ‘rock’.

The new Super Deluxe Edition of The Who Sell Out features 112 tracks, 46 of which are unreleased, an 80-page, hard-back full-colour book, including rare period photos, memorabilia, track by track annotation and new sleeve notes by Pete Townshend with comments from the likes of Pete Drummond (Radio Caroline DJ), Richard Evans (designer) & Roy Flynn (the Speakeasy Club manager)

The Super Deluxe package also includes nine posters & inserts, including replicas of
20” x 30” original Adrian George album poster, a gig poster from The City Hall, Newcastle, a Saville Theatre show 8-page programme, a business card for the Bag o’ Nails club, Kingly Street, a Who fan club photo of group, a flyer for Bath Pavilion concerts including The Who, a crack-back bumper sticker for Wonderful Radio London, Keith Moon’s Speakeasy Club membership card and a Who Fan Club newsletter.

As a taster for the set an EP of Pete Townshend’s previously unreleased demos has today been released on all streaming services including ‘Pictures Of Lily’ (New remix, previously unreleased)’ Kids! Do You Want Kids?’ (AKA Do You Want Kids, Kids?)  (Previously unreleased) & ‘Odorono’ (Previously unreleased).

The Who Sell Out was originally planned by Pete Townshend and the band’s managers Kit Lambert & Chris Stamp, as a loose concept album including jingles and commercials linking the songs stylised as a pirate radio broadcast. This concept was born out of necessity as their label and management wanted a new album and Townshend felt that he didn’t have enough songs.

The ground-breaking original plan for Sell Out was to sell advertising space on the album but instead the band opted for writing their own jingles paying tribute to pirate radio stations and to parody an increasingly consumerist society.

The homage to pop-art is evident in both the advertising jingles and the iconic sleeve design created by David King who was the art director at the Sunday Times, and Roger Law who invented the Spitting Image TV show. The sleeve features four advertising images, taken by the renowned photographer David Montgomery, of each band member Odorono deodorant (Pete Townshend), Medac spot cream (Keith Moon), Charles Atlas (John Entwistle) and Roger Daltrey & Heinz baked beans. The story goes that Roger Daltrey caught pneumonia from sitting in the cold beans for too long.

The Who Sell Out is a bold depiction of the period in which it was made, the tail-end of the ‘swinging-60s’ meets pop-art mixed with psychedelia and straight-ahead pop. It’s a glorious blend of classic powerful Who instrumentation, melodic harmonies, satirical lyrical imagery crystallised for what was only the group’s third album. The album’s ambition and scope is unrivalled by the Who, or any other act from that period.

Within the bold concept, were a batch of fabulous and diverse songs. I Can See for Miles, a top ten hit at the time, is a Who classic. Rael, a Townshend ‘mini-opera’ with musical motifs that reappeared in Tommy and the psychedelic blast of Armenia City In The Sky and Relax are among the very best material Townshend or anyone else wrote during the 1960s.

One of the most extraordinary albums of any era, The Who Sell Out is The Who’s last ‘pop’ album. Two years later came ‘Tommy’ – a double concept album about a deaf, dumb and blind kid.

Jim Capaldi’s Defining 1975 “Short Cut Draw Blood” Album Gets its Long-Awaited Worldwide Digital Release

0

Jim Capaldi was a major figure on the British rock scene from the 1960s into the new millennium; achieving stardom both as a founding member of Traffic and successful solo artist who collaborated with some of the most prestigious artists of his day.

Whilst Capaldi was most recognized as Traffic’s drummer, he was also one of the group’s principal songwriters alongside Steve Winwood, co-writing hits including ‘Paper Sun’ and ‘Dear Mr. Fantasy’. Inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2004, Capaldi was also the recipient of 5 ASCAP and BMI Awards.

In December 1975, Jim Capaldi released his third and celebrated solo album ‘Short Cut Draw Blood’ for Island Records. Now, for the first time, this re-mastered masterpiece gets its official digital release and will be available, on all streaming and download platforms worldwide, from Feb 26th once again via Island. Sounding equally fresh and current today, Jim’s keen socio-politically conscious themes are just as poignant now as they were over 45 years ago. None more so than in anti-establishment indie-rock anthem and title track ‘Short Cut Draw Blood’ with its snarling warning of climate destruction and corporate greed. Former ‘Traffic’ members Steve Winwood and Chris Wood, Muscle Shoals Rhythm Section of Hood and Hawkins, Jimmy Johnson and Pete Carr provide weighty grooves and urgency to Capaldi’s verses, all backed by some electrifying guitar work by none other than Chris Spedding. The song’s construction and content bring to mind Bob Dylan’s ‘Hurricane’. Proving his worth as a visionary writer and innovative lyricist, Short Cut Draw Blood with its heterogenous influences from African- Jazz, Funk and Latin marked a major turning point in Capaldi’s career, showing he could move with times and adapt to musical trends, but still maintain his musical credibility.

This was Jim’s first album released after the breakup of Traffic, his third solo album, and a commercial breakthrough with two top 30 hit singles; It’s All Up to You (#27) and Love Hurts (#4), there is a common viewpoint that Jim’s version of Love Hurts is the one that ‘nails it’. The album also entered the charts in several other countries.

Recorded between 1974-75 at the illustrious Muscle Shoals Sound Studio, Sheffield, Alabama and Island Studios, London, the album included a heavy Traffic contingent including Steve Winwood and Chris Wood, Rebop and Rosko Gee with a stellar cast of musicians including Chris Spedding, Roger Hawkins, David Hood, Barry

Beckett, Pete Carr, Jimmy Johnson, Paul Kossoff from Free, Remi Kabaka, Rico Rodriguez and of course, Jim’s own brother and long-time collaborator, Phil Capaldi.

‘Goodbye Love’ opens the album. Winwood’s bass playing, rhythmic piano and Hammond pin down this soulful groove. Capaldi uses a drum machine whilst Rebop Kwaku Baah and Remi Kabaka provide more ‘traditional’ pockets of percussion. Ray Allen punches out a trademark virtuoso on the sax – a man who would become a staple of Jim’s touring line-up.

Another cover is Jim’s take on The Slickers ‘Johnny Too Bad’. A genteel reggae groove with a few minor lyrical adjustments referencing Birmingham and Basing Street Studios. Other Island artists would cover the tune including Jimmy Cliff and Bob Marley – another close and lifelong friend of Jim’s.

‘Living on a Marble’ is equally spiky with Jim delivering his unmistakable driving vocals and again highlighting the gap between ‘us and them’.

‘Boy with a Problem’ deals with the addiction problems of his Traffic colleague Chris Wood. Ironically Paul Kossoff who blasts out a fiery jaw dropping solo on the track would also fall foul of addiction.
‘Keep on Trying’ is a studio jam with Jim delivering a loose narrative to complement its infectious house party-like groove and Rico Rodrigues (trombone from Cuba) and Ray Allen (sax) deliver carefree solo’s – it’s Jim and the band having fun.

Closing track ‘Seagull’ is a refined ballad with Jim joined by Chris Wood, Steve Winwood and Remi. A tranquil finish to a varied and accomplished album. The material also worked spectacularly in a live setting. This was to be Jim’s last album for island, until “Some Come Running, released in 1988. The album title; a Jamaican adage “Short Cut, Draw Blood” warns that taking the easy way out can offer dire consequences, which carries substantial thematic weight to this album. The title conceived by Chris Blackwell, founder of Island Records who also co-produced the album.

3. Love Hurts
4. Johnny Too Bad

Toronto’s Emerging Singer-Songwriter renforshort Releases “Virtual Reality”

0

Singer-songwriter sensation renforshort continues to usher in new music with the release of her latest single “virtual reality” via Universal Music, the country’s leading music company. Her mesmerizing vocals and intimate lyrics are brought to life in the accompanying visual, directed by Iris Kim. The video takes the song to a higher level, which shows ren living in a simulation, representing a heightened version of the reality we live in now; where every day feels the same and any acts of deviation are punished.

The song was written by Lauren Isenberg (renforshort), Kellen Pomeranz (Pom Pom), and Jesse Fink, and produced by Pom Pom (John Legend, Noah Cyrus, Lelya Blue), with additional production from Pete Robertson (Beabadoobee), and underscores.

“’virtual reality’ is a song that tackles many topics. But at its core, it really is about anxiety, routine, boredom, isolation, loneliness, and fear,” the 18-year-old says. “I think a lot of people have a very unhealthy relationship with technology because it’s never really been restricted enough to consider mental health and overall health, and that has fucked so many people up, now more than ever.” Adding, “Ever since I was young, social media has played a major role in my mental wellbeing, and I became so accustomed to it, it became a part of my routine and it came before everything else. The moment I wake up, almost instinctively, I check my phone. Depending on what I see in the morning, basically determines how I’m gonna feel for the rest of the day. I hate it. But I can’t stop. And what’s most ironic about this all is you’re likely going to read this on social media or listen to the song on some sort of electronic device…”

The new track is the first single off her forthcoming sophomore EP, and further showcases ren’s multi-faceted artistry, with her immersive, visually stunning videos and soaring, dynamic voice that transcends both age and genre.

The rising star has been met with wide critical acclaim- from being featured as MTV’s PUSH RADAR Artist of the week, Rolling Stone crowning her an “Emerging grunge-pop star,” NME featuring her as their “Breakout” artist, applauding her, “raw pop-rock anthems dripping with teenage angst,” and American Songwriter hailing her a, “musical auteur.”

She most recently released her cover of the Gorillaz “Feel Good Inc.” featuring the guitarist sensation Mateus Asato.

The Offspring Announce First New Music In Almost A Decade, Let The Bad Times Roll

0

One of the best-selling punk rock bands of all time, THE OFFSPRING have set a release date for their first new album in almost a decade. The band’s tenth studio album Let The Bad Times Roll will be available on April 16, and the first single “Let The Bad Times Roll” is available today.

Legends and innovators of the Southern California punk rock scene, The Offspring have sold more than 40 million albums worldwide, won countless awards, and have toured consistently, playing more than 500 shows in the last decade alone. Their music has had a lasting impact across film, television, and video games, but the band turned their focus to a new album release in 2021. The band is comprised of singer Dexter Holland, guitarist Noodles, drummer Pete Parada and new bassist Todd Morse.

The new music was written and recorded over the course of the last several years at various locations including the band’s Huntington Beach, California studio. The album is the band’s third time working in collaboration with legendary rock producer Bob Rock.

True to the irreverence at the core of punk rock music, the band and lyricist Dexter Holland took a view to today’s cultural moments and didn’t shy away from creating topical material in this album. The title track, written in late 2019 and recorded in 2020, reflects the country’s ongoing challenges. Holland said: “I feel like we’re in a unique period in history where instead of our world leaders saying ‘we’re doing our best’ it’s more like they’re saying ‘fuck it’ and its really scary.”

As guitarist Noodles said: “Folks are saying, if it’s all going to Hell, we might as well make the most out of it, or at least go out swinging. ‘Let The Bad Times Roll!’”

Edmonton, AB’s Rock Duo MENEELY BRANT Serve Up Groovy New Single, “Coming Days”

0

Four months after the release of their debut EP of the same name, Albertan musicians Al Brant and Dennis Meneely, have released their latest single, “Coming Days,” under the moniker Meneely Brant.

The four-minute, 20 second-spanning rock tune is driven by Dennis’s fantastic and inventive piano playing as well as an infectious vocal track by Al — which is complimented and layered with beautiful harmonies by Samantha King. On top of these key sonic elements, there’s an incredibly emotional and melodic guitar solo right at the end which makes for a fitting grand finale.

As members of Tacoy Ryde, one of Canada’s finest jam bands, their combined talents have been important components wherever they’ve been on display as members of various ensembles or special projects.

However, it is their long association in Tacoy Ryde that has acted as the catalyst and launching point for the Coming Days project.

Coming Days — the EP — dropped last November and features the songs “Just an Illusion,” “This Time for Sure,” “Unexpected,” “End of the Line” and of course, the groovy title track. The record was recorded at Danlyn Studios in Sherwood Park, Alberta.

The collection is composed of songs built on strong melodic and harmonic structures, intelligent and thoughtful lyrics, and tasty and top-drawer vocal and instrumental performances. The two speak highly of each other’s writing styles, saying that there’s an almost “telepathic understanding” of where the other will/wants to go in the middle of the writing process.

“I’ve always gravitated towards rock and roll and that’s evident here,” says Brant of the EP. Complimenting those words, Meneely said: “We’re carrying this torch for fusion rock … but that’s just who we are.”

Blind Indigenous Artist MATTMAC Continues to Inspire with New Dream Chasing Hit, “Break Me Down”

0

Melodic pop-trap beats and inspiring stories bring blind music producer and recording artist Mattmac together in collaboration with contemporary artist River Waterhen for this, his newest single and video for “Break Me Down” — available now.

Known for using his platform to inspire others, the song serves as an intersectional moment celebrating two young individuals passionately pursuing their brightest futures — and is the latest to land from Mattmac’s recently released debut album, 20/20. The project “Break Me Down” ushers audiences into the individual lives of Mattmac and River, and how they are connected through a larger narrative of Indigenous youth who are breaking the cycle, overcoming barriers, and finding their own pathways to success.

At 380,000+ streams across Spotify alone, Mattmac’s premiere release 20/20 features poppy vocals combined with hard-hitting trap beats, and thoughtfully honest lyrics that give listeners a glimpse into the mind of a blind creative as he paints vivid sonic pictures of struggle, healing, celebrating love, family and life on the reserve.

The eight-track album’s lead single “Paradise” quickly rose to become a popular song in the Canadian music circuit; garnering more than 89,000+ streams on Spotify and another 76,000+ on YouTube, it hit Top 3 on the NCI FM Indigenous Music Countdown hosted by SiriusXM, and Top 50 on the Mediabase radio charts. With heavy local support from Virgin Radio Winnipeg, the song has become both a national and local sensation — including features with CBC Indigenous, CTV National News, Winnipeg Sun, and more.

For “Break Me Down,” the video focuses on River Waterhen as a young, Indigenous man whose life growing up on the reserve was never easy. Ultimately, he graduates high school, furthers his education, and moves to a big city — which turns out to be an adjustment all its own.

There was an element of life imitating art: River Waterhen is a Cree contemporary dancer from Island Lake Cree Nation, SK who is currently pursuing his education at the Centre for Indigenous Theatre in Toronto, while pursuing his own path as a creator online.

While it’s not step for step, River’s story is overarching one Mattmac knows all too well; “Break Me Down” speaks to his personal struggles living in a small, isolated community, and how it’s easy to lose motivation.

Hailing from Garden Hill First Nation, Manitoba, Mattmac has been blind from birth. After struggling with depression at a young age, and credits both his mother’s support and music for helping him cope; he grew up surrounded by music both on the radio and singing in his community’s gospel choir.

A fully self-taught artist, Mattmac first began to make beats and write songs when he was 13 years old, and later taught himself how to play piano and guitar. He also has impressive skills with beat production software and equipment, and attributes his creative competencies to the support of the Blind & Famous group — a USA based collective of blind music artists who collaborate and connect with one another through the internet.

Mattmac was first launched into the music scene in 2016 when N’we Jinan, a travelling music studio program, visited his community and invited him to collaborate on a project. Pulling inspiration from his personal story, they created a song and video titled “Help You See” that has been watched early 250,000 times on YouTube and Facebook. Through this experience, he connected with International artist Nelly Furtado, and performed alongside her at Indigenous Day Live and We Day Canada Day in 2017; they continue to work together.

Upon 20/20’s release, Mattmac has been donating 50% of profits from CD sales to the Bear Clan Patrol’s hamper program, a service that feeds over 400+ families living on the streets of Winnipeg each week.
