Pentatonix Release Cover Of Tears For Fears’ ‘Mad World’

0

Three-time Grammy Award-winning and multi-platinum-selling artist Pentatonix release their arrangement of Tears for Fears’ “Mad World.” Coinciding with the release, Pentatonix also dropped a hauntingly stark music video for the track this morning.

Last month, Pentatonix released “Happy Now,” their first original single since 2015’s self-titled originals album. “Happy Now” has garnered over 1.7M streams to date and was produced by Johan Carlsson (Ariana Grande, One Direction), Sean Myer (Selena Gomez, Meghan Trainor) and Ojivolta (Selena Gomez, Christina Aguilera) and co-produced by Pentatonix and Ben Bram.

Elvis Costello’s October Surprise — 50 Songs for 50 Days

0

“If you’re tired of the lies of politicians and of preachers
You can place your trust in me, help me be your brother’s keeper
If you pay too many taxes, think salvation should be cheaper
Just say “Blood and Hot Sauce”

From Elvis Costello:

These lines come from a campaign song that I wrote for a musical adaptation of the Budd Schulberg story, “A Face In The Crowd”, which would have been coming to the stage quite soon, had it not been for the present contagion.

“Face” is the tale of Lonesome Rhodes, a lying, cheating, pill-popping double-talking no-good, who is discovered in jail by Marcia Jeffries, a radio producer who sees potential in his silver tongue and common touch.

The story sees him rise through the broadcasting world until Lonesome gets such good ratings that he believes that he holds sway over “The Ordinary Man,” who he secretly despises.

But that story is for another day.

In the meantime, I have created this installation of “50 Songs For 50 Days”, presenting lyrics written over the last 50 years – most of them my own – and heard on recordings made between 1977 and 2020, including several that will be issued here for the first time.

These songs were written in response to events over these many years but it strikes me that you may find something useful in them at this present moment; a joke, a motto or even a couple of dance steps to keep the blood pumping and the hot sauce at hand.

I hope these songs will amuse, console or even infuriate, because passive indifference is hardly the way forward.

From September 15, we will bring you a different song every day for the next 50 days via the miracle of your favourite streaming service and the wonder of the internet. Please stay tuned.

I hope you get what you wish for or what you really deserve and that we can all find a way to forgive those who trespass against us.

One day I will see you again in the stalls or in the stars. Love from your friend in the future. Elvis Costello

Ben Harper Reveals October 23 Release Date For Solo Lap Steel Guitar Album Winter Is For Lovers

0

Ben Harper has released “London,” a new preview of his forthcoming album Winter is For Lovers (ANTI- Records). Along with the single, Harper has confirmed the album’s release date for October 23rd. The album is Harper’s first-ever entirely instrumental project, and in many ways his entire musical life has culminated in this moment: a 15-song solo recording of original compositions imagined as a symphony on his lap steel guitar.

The first pressing of a limited edition vinyl has already sold out, but fans can still pre-order both digital and additional physical versions of Winter Is For Lovers here.

Watch Harper perform a live version of “London” that was just filmed at The Folk Music Store, the influential California instrument shop his grandparents opened in the 1950s.

“The track ‘London’ for me is influenced by the great British guitar players, such as Richard Thompson, Nick Drake, John Martyn, Jimmy Page. It’s got that driving British push and pulse, a jingling jangling rumble that I tried to get that sound on that track and to me it felt like London specifically,” Harper says of the track.

Meditative and affecting, the music featured on Winter Is For Lovers is deeply ingrained in Harper’s DNA and leads directly back to The Folk Music Store, which has hosted luminaries of all stripes, including Sonny Terry, Brownie McGhee, the Rev. Gary Davis, Doc Watson and John Fahey. While Harper worked in the shop throughout his childhood, he met iconic players like Leonard Cohen, Taj Mahal, David Lindley and Jackson Browne.

Winter Is For Lovers is filled with the music Harper heard growing up, listening to the blues, Hawaiian and classical guitar masters in his mother’s record collection. He gravitated early on to the distinct wail of the slide guitar, learning finger picking from the great Taj Mahal and later studying with Chris Darrow of Nitty Gritty Dirt Band – a lap steel virtuoso who had a major influence on Harper’s lifelong embrace of the instrument.

Harper has pushed musical boundaries since his 1994 debut and his lap steel guitar has played a tremendous role in his distinct sound throughout his career. But he’s never made an album that so purely distills his reverence for the instrument, and his mastery of it.

Winter Is For Lovers tracklist:

Rocker God Lenny Kaye Introduces the Story of the “Great Secret Record Company” in New Book

0

Lenny Kaye, guitarist, composer, writer, and member of the Patti Smith group, has always been inspired by Detroit’s Fortune Records, a family-owned forerunner of Motown that laid the groundwork for the celebrated musical legacy of the Motor City. Lenny has written the introduction to the fascinating story of this eccentric independent imprint that is finally being told in the new book, Mind Over Matter: The Myths and Mysteries of Detroit’s Fortune Records, wherein authors Billy Miller and Michael Hurtt leave no stone unturned in chasing down the wild tales behind some of the coolest music that you may have never heard.

A virtual alternate history of early rock ’n’ roll, country, R&B and soul, Lenny Kaye wrote the foreword for this incredible book, and I wanted to share a little summary of what you will find in Mind Over Matter, in addition to the 576 pages of previously unrevealed history, unseen photographs and original, from-the-street interviews with those who cast Fortune into legend.

Although their label was a “mom and pop outfit” that ran on “faith’ in a run-down neighborhood in Detroit, according to Lenny Kaye, Jack and Devora Brown created a business that continues to inspire to this day. Their tiny record store with a small studio tucked behind the back shelving was the home to a diverse roster of blues, rockabilly, gospel, Gypsy, polka, bluegrass, jazz and doo-wop musicians that came to Fortune to hear themselves on record and unwittingly created a multicultural musical time capsule of a great American city in the arc of its rise and fall.

Lenny writes of the recording process at Fortune: “It was about as live as you could get, the drums and guitars scattering off cinder block walls; the singers in tight, no headphones, close enough to hear each other.” Word quickly spread about the Browns’ “open door policy” and school kids, both black and white, would come to hang out and record at Fortune. The sense of family created by Jack and Devora attracted names like Andre Williams, Nathaniel Mayer, and Nolan Strong, whose 1962 hit song “Mind Over Matter” reached number one in Detroit before Fortune ran out of “promotional muscle.”

Fortune slowly dissolved in the wake of the British Invasion, the rise of Motown and the social unrest of 1967. After a 1973 car accident crippled Jack physically and scattered Devora mentally, the Brown children took over but according to Lenny, “their faith couldn’t sustain them.” What’s left is a mesmerizing discography intertwined with the compelling account of a family business that began and survived against all odds and what has been called “the greatest history of failure in all of post-war pop music.” The story of this close-knit, one-of-a-kind cinder block setup and its astounding array of artists is now being told for the first time under the title of one of Fortune’s biggest hits — and the phrase that could very well have served as the Browns’ motto — “Mind Over Matter.”

Tears For Fears Release Previously Unreleased “Woman in Chains” From Townhouse Live Jam Session

0

WOMAN IN CHAINS (TOWNHOUSE LIVE JAM SESSIONS) is the latest digital single to be taken from the forthcoming 4CD/1Blu-Ray Super Deluxe Edition of Tears For Fears Seeds Of Love.

This previously unreleased version of the classic single was recorded in 1988 during jam sessions which took place at London’s Townhouse studio. The Super Deluxe box set contains half an hour of unadulterated live-in-the-studio performances, reproduced exactly as it was performed at the time, complete with chatter, laughter and no overdubs.

Roland Orzabal recalls the sessions that produced this seven-minute version of Woman In Chains “We got Oleta in and we had Manu Katche on drums and Pino Palladino on bass and started playing live. That was really when the album kicked off, it was really getting Oleta involved. It’s almost like every album needs a key person and one to unlock it. It was incredible; those live sessions were magical.”

Of the song itself Curt Smith says, “I’ve always loved the song without question. It’s a great sounding record and Oleta was fantastic on it.”

Oleta Adams “To this day that is a classic record. Absolutely classic and it was a very personal song Roland had written, inspired by the memory of his mother and things that she had gone through. Not only that, but women in general who are mistreated and held back by male figures and a very strong personality. I guess it could have been therapeutic for him. As we say over here ‘he put his foot in it’ – a lot of heart and soul in that music.”

The Seeds Of Love super deluxe box set consists of four CDs and one Blu-Ray, fully tells the story of how this extraordinary album came to be with 22 unreleased tracks from demo sessions, live jams, studio sessions along with a definitive set of b-sides, and rare mixes. Highlights include the Townhouse Jam Sessions, demos of Advice For The Young At Heart with Roland Orzabal singing lead vocal and the recently released demo of Rhythm of Life. The Blu-ray also features a stunning 5.1 mix of the album by Grammy nominated artist Steven Wilson.

Coming off the back of the ten million selling ‘Songs From The Big Chair’ The first writing sessions for ‘The Seeds Of Love’ started when the band were touring in 1985 making use of soundchecks to sketch the outlines of new songs. Over the next four years, Roland and Curt would work with several producers, engineers and many musicians before finally deciding to produce the album themselves with assistance from their ‘Songs From The Big Chair’ engineer Dave Bascombe.

My Next Read: “Do What You Want: The Story of Bad Religion” By Bad Religion and Jim Ruland

0

From their beginnings as teenagers experimenting in a San Fernando Valley garage dubbed “The Hell Hole” to headlining major music festivals around the world, Do What You Wanttells the whole story of Bad Religion’s 40-year career in irreverent style.

Do What You Want: The Bad Religion Story reveals the ups and downs of the band’s forty-year career. From their beginnings as teenagers jamming in a San Fernando Valley garage dubbed “The Hell Hole” to headlining major music festivals around the world, Do What You Want tells the whole story in irreverent style.

While Do What You Want tracks down nearly all of Bad Religion’s members past and present, the chief storytellers are the four voices that define Bad Religion: Greg Graffin, a Wisconsin kid who sang in the choir and became an L.A. punk rock icon while he was still a teenager; Brett Gurewitz, a high school dropout who founded the independent punk label Epitaph Records and went on to become a record mogul; Jay Bentley, a surfer and skater who gained recognition as much for his bass skills as for his onstage antics; and Brian Baker, a founding member of Minor Threat who joined the band in 1994 and brings a fresh perspective as an intimate outsider.

With a unique blend of melodic hardcore and thought-provoking lyrics, Bad Religion paved the way for the punk rock explosion of the 1990s, opening the door for bands like NOFX, The Offspring, Rancid, Green Day, and Blink-182 to reach wider audiences. They showed the world what punk could be, and they continue to spread their message one song, one show, one tour at a time — with no signs of stopping.

Brian Eno Releases ‘Film Music 1976 – 2020,’ His First-Ever Collection Of Music From His Film And Television Soundtrack

0

Brian Eno releases Film Music 1976 – 2020 – his first-ever collection of music from his film and television soundtrack oeuvre digitally on November 13, 2020, and on 2LP and 1CD on January 22, 2021. Spanning five decades, this release features classic Eno compositions and includes some lesser-known gems and seven previously unreleased tracks.

Eno’s long-standing affair with film goes all the way back to 1970 with his soundtrack to Malcolm Le Grice’s short experimental film Berlin Horse. In 1976 he followed this with Sebastiane and a long-forgotten Greek b-horror film, Land Of The Minotaur AKA The Devil’s Men. This led to an unstoppable momentum largely initiated by the release of Music For Films. Early classic Eno film moments include “Prophecy Theme” from David Lynch’s Dune, “From The Beginning” from Dario Argento’s Opera, “Force Marker” and “Late Evening In Jersey” from Michael Mann’s Heat, “Under” from Ralph Bakshi’s Cool World and his moving cover of William Bell’s soul classic, “You Don’t Miss Your Water,” in Jonathan Demme’s Married to The Mob.

His 1978 studio album, Music For Films was a loose compilation of material recorded between 1975 ~ 1978. It was intended as a conceptual soundtrack for imaginary films, and only the last track, “Final Sunset” was written for an actual film. It proved to be a fruitful project with nearly every piece on the album going on to be used in future films, including several of Derek Jarman’s, the remake of Jean-Luc Goddard’s BreathlessJohn Woo’s A Better TomorrowRock ‘n’ Roll High School and Todd Hayes’ Safe.

Eno again explored this approach with U2 as Passengers on their collaboration album, Original Soundtracks 1. Four of the tracks from the album were used in films prior to release: “Beach Sequence” and “Your Blue Room” in Michelangelo Antonioni’s Beyond the Clouds, “Miss Sarajevo” in an eponymous documentary about a beauty pageant held in the midst of besieged ’93 Sarajevo, and “One Minute Warning” in Mamoru Oshii’s Japanese animation classic, Ghost in the Shell. Another track, “Always Forever Now” later appeared in Heat.

In the mid-seventies, Eno began a rich and rewarding collaboration with British filmmaker Derek Jarman, who initially commissioned Eno to record “Final Sunset” for the closing scene to his first feature film, Sebastiane. The collaboration continued all the way through until Jarman’s untimely death in 1994. Including the several tracks in Sebastiane, this collaboration resulted in Eno’s music in four of Jarman’s films, including “Still Water” and “Dover Beach” in Jubilee, “Blue” and the entire score of the autobiographical Glitterbug – his final film.

“An Ending (Ascent)” and “Deep Blue Day” are taken from Apollo: Atmosphere & Soundtracks, Eno’s collaboration with his brother Roger and Daniel Lanois. The music was originally written for Al Reinert’s landmark documentary of the Apollo moon landing, For All Mankind, although since then, “”An Ending (Ascent)” has taken on a life of its own and is now remembered just as much from Steven Soderbergh’s TrafficDanny Boyle’s 28 Days Later and Miguel Arteta’s Beatriz at Dinner. It even made an appearance in the 2012 London Olympics opening ceremony. And then there’s “Deep Blue Day,” which will forever be identified with Ewan McGregor’s legendary toilet dive in Trainspotting.

Aside from Glitterbug and For All Mankind, Eno has also provided complete scores for a number of other films including Peter Jackson’s The Lovely Bones, and more recently, Henrique Goldman’s atmospheric Brazilian serial killer biopic, O Nome da Morte AKA A Man Called Death, Slavoj Žižek’s mind-boggling documentary, The Pervert’s Guide To CinemaGary Hustwit’s spotlight on pioneering industrial designer Dieters Rams, Rams, and most recently a documentary film on close long-time friend and associate, Stewart BrandWe Are As Gods, which will have its public premiere in early 2021.

Eno has also scored extensively for television, including all three series of award-winning UK crime drama Top Boy, for which he received a BAFTA Award.  Danny Boyle’s Mr. Wroe’s Virgins, which also earned Eno and his brother Roger a BAFTA nomination for “Best Original Television Music.” Other television credits include his scores to BBC Natural World’s HammerheadFrancis Bacon’s ArenaNeil Gaiman’s futuristic urban series, Neverwhere, and Stewart Brand’s BBC mini-series ‘How Buildings Learn’.

Eno has had hundreds of pieces of his music used in films, documentaries, and television programs, including more than 20 complete scores for some of the best-known directors in the world. Film Music 1976 ~ 2020 is a long-awaited album that finally brings together seventeen of his most recognizable film and television compositions, a perfect introduction to this enormous body of work.
