Indigenous Fashion Week Toronto Moves 2020 Edition Online

0

The biannual Indigenous Fashion Week Toronto (IFWTO), originally scheduled for May of this year, has re-envisioned its 2020 edition as an online presentation from November 26 – 29. The four-day festival will goe live at IFWtoronto.com and include: cinematically produced fashion films featuring 19 designers; 50+ limited edition Indigenous-made collections, which will then retail in a virtual pop-up marketplace; a digital art exhibition; and a critical discourse about fashion and the arts through Indigenous leadership in a series of panel discussions. This year’s edition of IFWTO continues to celebrate Indigenous-made fashion, craft and textiles, share Indigenous visual narratives and create opportunities for global community engagement through a screen-based experience.

“At a time when physical gatherings are difficult and the online market is saturated, carving out innovative digital spaces for Indigenous creators to gather and share our work is vital,” says IFWTO Artistic Director Sage Paul. “IFWTO has brought together a talented multidisciplinary team to reimagine how audiences experience and interact with Indigenous-made fashion, craft and textiles online. I hope the four-day experience is a cathartic experience of getting dressed up for something special and celebrating Indigenous art and culture.”

Bringing together fashion, theatre, dance and film, the IFWTO Fashion Films are curatorially underscored by our interconnectedness to water. The IFWTO Selections Committee recognizes mainstream and Indigenous fashion as it relates to climate seasons that correspond to the land, water, harvests and moon. Water is a vital resource and is sacred for Indigenous peoples around the world. It is protected and nurtured by women and carries metaphorical and literal connections to blood and life. In relation to fashion, both Indigenous and mainstream, water is an undeniable resource, connector and life force that must be protected and nurtured. The four programs feature:

0

Today, Elton John celebrates the 50th Anniversary of his career-catapulting performance at the historic Troubadour, in Los Angeles, CA. On August 25, 1970, Elton took the stage for the first time in the United States, a gig that would quickly mark the beginning of his legendary career. Playing to a star-studded, packed house of 300 people, Elton was introduced by Neil Diamond before performing for the likes of Quincy Jones, Peggy Lipton, Linda Ronstandt, Brian Wilson and Mike Love of the Beach Boys, Van Dyke Parks, Don Henley, Randy Newman, David Crosby, Leon Russell, Stephen Stills and Graham Nash. His set consisted of songs off his debut album, in addition to many unreleased tracks such as the timeless “Your Song,” from his then forthcoming eponymous album Elton John. The concert was highlighted by an extraordinary review from the Los Angeles Times’s music critic, Robert Hilburn, and has since been heralded as one of the greatest concerts of the rock era.

Also celebrating its 50th anniversary is the aforementioned, critically acclaimed debut album, Elton John. In celebration of this golden anniversary, a limited edition Record Store Day exclusive deluxe gatefold 2LP version of the record will be available on August 29, 2020. New Ronnie Wood Film Tracing His 50-Year Journey Announced, ‘Somebody Up There Likes Me’

0

Eagle Rock Entertainment/Universal Music Canada proudly presents the first in-depth film biography of iconic musician Ronnie Wood with the release of Somebody Up There Likes MeAn official selection at both the Tribeca Film Festival 2020 and the BFI London Film Festival 2019, the film (by acclaimed director Mike Figgis) will be available in North America as a Virtual Cinema release starting September 18 at www.ronniewoodmovie.com, running through October. This will be followed by a DVD, Blu-ray and deluxe hardback book release on October 9.

Pre-orders are available now. Those who purchase a ticket ($11) will also be treated to a Q&A with Wood and Figgis.

As an artist, musician, producer and author, Ronnie Wood has made countless contributions to the cultural zeitgeist. Yet, there is so much more to know about the man himself. This intimate portrait traces the many lives and careers of one of the most important guitarists in music, capturing what it means to be a rock ‘n’ roll icon.

Somebody Up There Likes Me traces Wood’s 50-year musical history, from The Birds, The Jeff Beck Group, The Faces (with Rod Stewart), and The New Barbarians, to becoming a permanent member of The Rolling Stones. Additionally, Mike Figgis captures Wood’s charismatic warmth, energy and honesty as he speaks openly about his battles with drink and drugs.  The film takes its title from a conversation with Wood about surviving his chronic smoking habit: “When they operated on my cancer, they took away my emphysema. They said my lungs were as if I’d never smoked. I thought: ‘How’s that for a Get Out Of Jail Free card?’ Somebody up there likes me, and somebody down here likes me too.”

The documentary features brand new interviews with Wood’s Rolling Stones bandmates Mick JaggerKeith Richards and Charlie Watts, as well as his Faces bandmate, Rod Stewart. Other interviewees include Wood’s wife Sally Wood, singer Imelda May and artist Damien Hirst, alongside both present-day performances and archive footage from Wood’s stellar multi-band career.

These interviews and performance segments blend with footage of Wood playing guitar and harmonica (a reminder of his talents as a versatile instrumentalist), as well as quiet, personal moments while he paints in his studio. It climaxes with Wood giving a beautiful, intimate performance of “Breathe On Me” from his 1975 solo album New Look.

The DVD, blu-ray and deluxe formats all feature bonus performances by Ronnie, plus two mini-features. The deluxe is a special limited edition 40-page hardback book featuring pictures, paintings and annotations by Ronnie which are exclusive to this format. It also features an exclusive essay by Paul Sexton, with DVD and blu-ray of the documentary.

Somebody Up There Likes Me is a fresh look at Ronnie Wood – a rewarding and compelling insight into one of music’s most likeable, successful and complex key players.

Ronnie describes the film as summing up “the essence of survival” in a life he continues to live to the fullest, without regrets, “I wouldn’t change anything except I’d do it with my eyes open a bit more,” he says, “I was in the hands of destiny all my life…and being in the right place at the right time”.

Chris Stapleton Returns With New Album ‘Starting Over’ Out November 13

0

Starting Over, the highly anticipated new studio album from Chris Stapleton, is out November 13. Written by Stapleton and Mike Henderson, “Starting Over” begins an album of startling prescience—completed in late February only days before the shutdown began. Across its fourteen tracks are songs that examine life’s simplest joys and most serious struggles. Alongside eleven written by Stapleton with both longtime friends and new collaborators are three carefully chosen covers: John Fogerty’s “Joy Of My Life” and Guy Clark’s “Worry B Gone” and “Old Friends.” The resulting album—both timely and timeless—speaks to and transcends the current moment in ways unimaginable even while it was being created.

The album finds Stapleton back in his second home, Nashville’s historic RCA Studio A (with additional work done at Muscle Shoals Sound and Compass Sound Studio), surrounded by his trusted collaborators as well as some new faces. Produced by Dave Cobb (who also plays acoustic guitar), the record features his beloved wife, Morgane Stapleton (vocals, tambourine), with longtime bandmates J.T. Cure (bass) and Derek Mixon (drums). Special guests include legendary musicians Mike Campbell (electric guitar), Benmont Tench (Hammond B3 organ) and Paul Franklin (pedal steel) as well as the Nashville Urban Choir who are featured on “Watch You Burn,” written by Stapleton and Campbell.

Kentucky-born Stapleton is a 5x Grammy, 10x CMA and 7x ACM Award-winner and one of the country’s most respected and beloved musicians. Following 2015’s quadruple platinum breakthrough solo debut album Traveller, Stapleton released two No. 1 albums in 2017. Both From A Room: Volume 1 (certified platinum) and From A Room: Volume 2 (certified gold) take their name from legendary RCA Studio A, where they were recorded with Cobb. Released to overwhelming critical acclaim, The Tennessean praises, “Both are rich with the textures of Stapleton’s vocals that make him one of country music’s most beloved artists, classic country sounds and thoughtful articulate lyrics about love, life and pain.” He was recently announced as the first-ever “Artist-Songwriter of the Decade” recipient by the Academy of Country Music and, next year, will be the subject of a new exhibit at the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum.

Stapleton’s “All-American Road Show” tour is planned to resume next year. Highlights include headline shows at Washington State’s Gorge Amphitheatre, Chicago’s Wrigley Field, New York’s Madison Square Garden and “A Concert for Kentucky”—a special performance benefitting his newly created Outlaw State of Kind Hometown Fund to be held at University of Kentucky’s Kroger Field on April 24. Presented by Live Nation, the performance is the first concert ever held at UK’s Kroger Field and will feature very special guests Willie Nelson & Family, Sheryl Crow and Yola. 100% of the concert’s net proceeds will go toward Chris and Morgane Stapleton’s Outlaw State of Kind Hometown Fund. Established in partnership with the Blue Grass Community Foundation, the fund will specifically support local and national organizations directly impacting Kentucky, with initial grant distributions focusing on music and arts education. The El Mo Is Open! Live Music Returns To The Legendary El Mocambo September 10 With Big Wreck

0

El Mocambo Productions along with Michael Wekerle, owner of the El Mocambo announced today that the legendary venue will officially reopen its doors to the public on September 10, with a live concert event headlined by award-winning rock band Big Wreck, presented by Jim Beam in association with Wahlburgers, Nobis, and powered by Mogo. Described as an “ultramodern broadcast studio with a liquor license” (Globe and Mail), the El Mocambo is set to revolutionize the live music business by blending cutting-edge technology with unparalleled access – offering audiences, fans and music lovers the ultimate live experience across three separate venues all under the same roof in addition to delivering supreme virtual content straight to the comfort of their homes.

The Big Wreck performance will be streamed live from the second floor of the El Mocambo (Under The Neon Palms), via streaming partner Nugs.net. As the first streamed show for Big Wreck, and the official…official live show promoted by the El Mocambo, fans will be able to purchase access to stream the event in standard or 4k definition. Tickets will be available via nugs.TV at http://2nu.gs/BigWreck.

“During these unprecedented times we need to unite together to support everyone in our communities,” shares Michael Wekerle. “Music is a thread that unites us all and we are working closely with artists and their team members to bring new and meaningful experiences to music lovers, in new ways – safely. Myself, and my team are encouraged to continue to innovate, and work to create solutions that work to support artists, fans, communities and the entertainment industry at large. I am hopeful that with continued collaboration we can all work to sustain a healthy and thriving entertainment sector, and to ultimately keep live alive.”

Making its highly acclaimed virtual debut on Canada Day, the El Mocambo welcomed the City of Toronto’s Canada Day 2020 celebration playing host to rock icon Kim Mitchell, alt-rock band July Talk, Next Generation Leahy, singer-songwriter, actor and speaker Jully Black, Hip Hop artist Haviah Mighty and the legendary Gordon Lightfoot. Garnering more than 100,000 views in a single day, many of the live performances were broadcast/live streamed from the El Mocambo in 4k High Definition via Nugs.net/Youtube, concluding with a sing along to Neil Young’s “Lotta Love” led by Choir! Choir! Choir!.

As the world continues to adjust to the new reality of social distancing under the newly announced stage 3 regulations for live music venues, the El Mocambo is in an elite position to provide a new, innovative and engaging alternative for concert goers and audiences around the world. The iconic venue – wired to deliver music to fans and audiences globally, boasts three acoustically tuned performance areas (“The Starlight Room”, “Under The Neon Palms” and “VIP Balcony”) – each with their own entrance/exit and washroom facilities, state of the art video, audio, lighting and production capabilities in addition to the highest safety standards in terms of building construction and under the current public health and safety regulations.

New additions include a third storey soaring mezzanine, a retail space and mobility friendly access, along with the largest studio floor on the eastern seaboard. The revamped building has been designated as a content creation centre where performances on all three floors, as well as the backstage area can be sent through the SSL L550 simultaneously for recording and streaming.

“We are now a broadcast facility with three isolated performance areas, state of the art audio and video equipment and the ability to capture, record and stream high resolution content to a global audience,” shared Jamie Howieson, Production Manager & Executive Designer. “We have a central control room with a video control room, an audio control room and a vocal isolation booth, which allows us to pull audio and video from three separate performance spaces in the venue while simultaneously editing, mixing and delivering content via streaming platforms, or recording and capturing for future use.”

In addition to live music, curated small-scale social events including weddings, private parties and more can be hosted at The El Mocambo. Events can be recorded live from the floor via a state-of-the-art in-house control room and live streamed in 4k for audiences around the world – making it a one-of-a-kind vintage venue for the digital age with multi-function capabilities.

The closure of the historic Toronto entertainment venue was announced in October 2014 before Wekerle, Founder and Chairman of merchant bank Difference Capital Financial Inc., and former Dragon on CBC’s Dragons’ Den stepped forward to purchase it. In 2015, the El Mocambo began extensive renovations to repair the aging building and create fully modernized performance and event spaces. The intimate ground-floor stage and the second-floor mainstage remain in the same locations, but both now offer improved sightlines and exceptional lighting, video and acoustics.

One of North America’s longest-running and most iconic music venues, the El Mocambo was founded as a fine dining and dancing establishment in 1948, but since then evolved into something of a rock ‘n’ roll mecca, hosting many of the biggest names in music including: The Rolling Stones, Elvis Costello, Blondie, Ramones, Meatloaf, Stevie Ray Vaughan, U2 and many more.

Why are Total Gym Models the Best?

0

Total Gym models have been around for a while and are touted by some of the most popular fitness enthusiasts in the field. There are a few qualities that tend to stand out with these machines. Here is a look at what makes this the best workout equipment for your short and long-term requirements.

Refined Build

Finding a high-quality machine always comes down to build quality. If worse comes to worst, you’ll purchase a cheap machine with a bad warranty that ultimately won’t be of use for very long. If you are passionate about getting a good machine, then it is best to start here. The Total Gym products all have the same model base: a strong glide board that allows you to use your body-weight along with gravity to increase or decrease the intensity of your exercise. The way this works is by lowering or increasing the degree at which your glide board is at. The higher the incline, the harder it is, the lower you incline, the easier it is. This feature alone makes the Total Gym products a great option for older folks or those with chronic pain or recurring injuries. Using gravity and body weight keeps the exercises easy on the joints.

Safe

Safety is one detail everything hinges on when it comes to equipment. You are not going to want equipment that will break down as soon as you start using it. This can be frustrating and is the last thing a person is going to hope for when it comes to seeing good results.

Total Gym is a renowned equipment provider because it is committed to safety and offers top of the line warranty for all of their machines. This is a good indication that they believe in the safety of their products and will back them for years.

Their quality is easy to distinguish from others and is something you can be sure won’t let you down for years down the line.

Affordable

Total Gym is all about setting high standards, and that includes affordability. If you are someone that wants to find a good deal and wants to add value to their home gym, then this is a good starting point. Total Gym offers numerous different models, each at a different price. Regardless of what you are looking for in a machine, whether it’s 60 possible exercises or over 200, you will be able to find this through Total Gym at a comparable price to other machines on the market. Not to mention the additional accessories they offer with all of their machines, making the price that much more modest.

Regardless of what machine you buy and at what price, the quality and performance are going to matter when everything is said and done. If you plan to use your trainer multiple times a week, this is the company to start looking at first. They are going to shine through in regards to not only affordability but also quality and performance too, which you will surely notice once you put it to use!

Compact Designs

It’s essential to go with equipment that isn’t going to take up too much space; this can be frustrating and is the last thing a home gym owner is going to want when they are settling into their home gym for the first time! The reason this ends up being a favorite equipment brand has to do with the compact designs. Each piece of equipment is made with the client’s needs in mind and that includes how much space is going to be used up as soon as the machine is set up; all of Total Gym’s current machines on the market are storable and foldable, giving more space than you might expect. Many users note that once they are done using their machine, they fold it up and stick it in a closet where it won’t be seen.

Total Gym models continue to set the tone when it comes to delivering high-value machines that are going to be a joy to use throughout the year. These machines work well in a wide array of settings and will continue to add value to your routines throughout the year. When it comes to performance, quality, and durability, you are not going to find anything better than this.

These are models that are going to become a beautiful part of your life and will perform the way you want them to.

All in all, Total Gym offers quality machines at a modest price with a high-quality design that can be comfortably used by people of all ages. Regardless of your current injuries, weak joints, or lagging chronic pain, you can safely use these trainers without the fear of hurting yourself even more. As touted by physical rehabilitation clinics throughout the nation, we trust Total Gym to deliver the best products which they continue to do!

Adding Bluetooth Headphones to a HDTV – A Brief Guide

0

If you don’t want to disturb your roommates or family members while watching TV or playing video games too loud you have nothing to worry about anymore. There is a simple solution. All you have to do is to connect your wireless headphones to your TV.

In this article we are going to cover the basics of connecting your Bluetooth headphones to your TV. If you are ready, let’s begin!

The main reasons to add Bluetooth headphones to your TV

Before we begin, we will go through the main reasons of connecting the wireless headphones to the TV.

There are several reasons why you would like to connect your wireless headphones to your TV. For example, if you have some hearing problems and need to listen to your TV a bit louder than the others or you are constantly quarreling with your partner about how loud the TV should be – having your own pair of headphones and listening to the volume which suits you best is a great option. At the same time, if you don’t want to wake anyone near you but you still want to play your favorite video game or just listen to music the wireless headphones are a real life saver.

Most HDTVs don’t have a built in Bluetooth transmitter, so you will have to do that. The available outputs on your TV and the number of headphones you plan to hook up will determine the type of transmitter you need. Once you hook it up you will be able to pair your Bluetooth headphones with your TV.

What do you need?

We presume that you already know how to pair your Bluetooth headphones to your smartphone. However, connecting them to your TV is a bit more complicated. The first thing to do though is to check the audio outputs on your TV and based on that you’ll need a Bluetooth transmitter. Many of them you can find here.

What about the setup?

In case you don’t have any sound equipment already connected to your TV check the ports on your TV. In case you already have a soundbar or a receiver then check the ports on that device.

In general, most HDTVs have one TOSLINK optical port and L/R composite ports or a 3.5mm one. The 3.5mm and L/R composite jacks deliver the audio in analog format so there is no need to convert it. Because of that take care when buying the Bluetooth adapter because you may need to buy a L/R to headphone adapter.

On the other hand, if your TV has only a TOSLINK output without any analog outputs, it will be necessary to buy a digital to analog audio converter.

Choosing the right Bluetooth transmitter

Now the next step is to buy a Bluetooth transmitter. You just have to connect it to the available audio output and then you will be able to pair your Bluetooth headphones. However, when buying it you will have to keep two things in mind.

First of all, since we want very good audio quality and no audio lag, we should choose an adapter that supports aptX Low Latency. This codec will minimize the audio delay present in standard Bluetooth connections. However, keep in mind that your headphones must support this codec.

Second, in case you need to use two pairs of headphones make sure to select a Bluetooth adapter which supports multiple headphones and supports aptX on both of them. Such transmitters tend to cost more but it’s definitely a valuable investment.

How to connect everything?

Setting up the Bluetooth adapter and the headphones will take you less time than reading their specifications and features before the purchase. The entire process is quite simple and straightforward.

As we have already mentioned, you needed to identify the audio output you will use on your HDTV. Now you should connect everything. Plug in the Bluetooth adapter into the 3.5mm or a L/R composite audio output directly or using an adapter.

On the other hand, you will need a TOSLINK converter if you intend to use the optical audio port. This will allow you to link the TOSLINK output to the converter and you should plug in the Bluetooth adapter to the converter.

After you connect everything you will easily pair your headphones to the Bluetooth transmitter.

NOTE: In case there is no audio from the TV, check whether you have paired the headphones correctly. Unplug the Bluetooth transmitter and plug it into another audio source and try again. If you can hear audio now, but the TV audio doesn’t work, check the settings on your HDTV. Maybe you have to “tell” your HDTV to send the sound through the auxiliary audio ports.

However, you have nothing to worry about. These situations are quite rare and the entire process is very simple and easy, practically “plug and play”.

Jazz/Folk Duo Q&A – JUNO Award-Winning Tony Quarrington & Esteemed Entertainer Zoey Adams – Have “One More JAZZ Thing”

0

Prolific and eclectic musical duo Q&A have got One More JAZZ Thing for you; their newest EP is available now!

From big band to ballad — and including newly released single “That Place, That Face, That Moon” — One More JAZZ Thing leaves little behind across five tracks exploring the genre.

Comprised of JUNO Award-winning Tony Quarrington and Zoey Adams — an accomplished jazz guitarist, composer, and songwriter with hundreds of multi-genre credits to his name, and an artist long-lauded for her work in theatre, movies, radio, and corporate entertainment, respectively — the duo are now co-writing original tunes to the beat of their Q&A drum.

Having made music together in some form or another for the better part of two decades, Q&A quite literally holds 100 years of professional experience between them. Their first extended work together took place in 2005 when Stuart McLean commissioned Quarrington to compose what would become Vinyl Cafe: The Musical; Quarrington sang the role of ‘Dave’ and Adams ‘Morley,’ ‘Stephanie,’ and ‘Sam.’ “The pleasure we took in that project convinced us to work together even more,” they recall.

The results have included but are not limited to a long-held run as Paper Moon, a nostalgic jazz duo, all the way to now; One More JAZZ Thing is the first in a three-part EP project releasing via Sonic Peach Music focusing on a specific genre of music through the lens of this spectacularly diverse and uniquely talented pair.

One More FOLK Thing and One More POP Thing are set to follow this Fall.

Some jobs that might not be around, after the pandemic.

0

While a lot of people are not sure about the effects of the pandemic and are waiting for things to get better, with companies coming closer to a cure, everyone is waiting for the economy and markets to open up again and everything to go back to the way that it was. The pandemic has created a series of changes in the job market with most companies that can get their staff to start remote working, pushing for it.However, this is not something that all companies can handle, since it would vary depending on the industry that they belong to.

However, some changes are taking place in the job market, that seem like they are not going to get reversed. While the UK Government is currently pushing through with their furlough plan, they are paying 80% of the employee’s salaries while the company only pays the difference. Even with the Government paying such a large amount companies are still laying off their staff since companies cannot handle paying the difference with the economy being in the state that it currently is in.

People who were handling jobs that could easily be automated or replaced by various software solutions are the first to go. Initially, it was taking companies a lot more time to make these changes, with everyone thinking that the effects would not be seen this fast, but with the pandemic, companies are cutting costs and trying their best to keep running so they can get through when the Government bails on schemes they are currently running. These are some of the jobs that do not seem like they will be coming back anytime soon.

With the pandemic hitting the country, while most companies shut their doors, and started encouraging their employees to work remotely, this slowly turned into the trend in the UK. Although several startups used to handle remote working long before the pandemic, others are working on implementing these changes so they can do the same moving forward. Unfortunately, some businesses and sectors like construction, hospitality and even mechanical cannot be handled online, and needed to be handled, in person. While these companies are doing their best online, the most significant part of their work is in person. Another trend that seems likely to stay is people working remotely, as long as they can meet their deliverables and deadlines.

Employers are also beginning to handle background checks on the people working within their company to make sure that they are the right match for the entire company. Some jobs descriptions within a company require a certain level of background check conducted, and this depends on the type of company or role that a person is filling. The most popular system of going through someone background to find if they have a criminal record is through the DBS check. The check was created for employers to go through the background of their employees or people they are planning on hiring, so they know that they match the requirements of the company. Companies can also handle the CRB check online to save them the time and the effort to get this done
