The Ultimate Wildebeest Migration Guide – When to Travel, Cost and Reviews

What Is The Great Wildebeest Migration?

There’s a big chance you have heard (if not seen) the Great Wildebeest Migration.

Also known as the Great Migration or the Wildebeest Migration, the Great Wildebeest Migration refers to the long and arduous journey where millions of wildebeest and other grazers move through the Serengeti and the Masai Mara ecosystems in pursuit of the rains. The Wildebeest Migration is arguably the greatest tourist highlight in East Africa.

Contrary to popular misconceptions out there, the migration doesn’t start and end in a few days. Instead, it’s a year-round cyclic journey that’s marked by perilous river crosses, high-speed big cat hunts, and lots of other exciting activities in between.

If you’re planning to share in the experiences of these herds as they journey through the expansive Mara – Serengeti ecosystem, you would need to work closely with professional local Kenya tour operators such as AJKenyasafaris.com and MasaiMarasafari.in.

Read on for more insights on what the migration is about, the special highlights within the journey, and the best time to visit Masai Mara and Serengeti national park for the annual wildebeest migration.

Which Animals Are Involved?

The Great Wildebeest Migration is so named due to the high number of wildebeest involved. But, the journey doesn’t exclusively involve wildebeest herds.

Various statistics estimate that there are at least 1.5 million wildebeest, 200,000 Burchell’s zebras, 350, 000 Thomson’s gazelles, as well as thousands of antelopes and other hoofed animals that take part in this migration. That doesn’t include many other animals, such as buffalos, that are usually coopted along the way.

Of course, it’s impossible to accurately determine the actual number of animals that move through the entire ecosystem in a single journey. That’s because a lot happens along the way. Hundreds of the herds are preyed on by river-dwelling Nile crocodiles and other predators, mostly the big cats. Many more animals perish by other means, such as drowning during the chaotic river crossings and getting trampled during stampede.

According to the rules of natural selection, only the strongest and most adaptable herds make it to the end of each journey, ensuring that future wildebeest generations comprise of only the most resilient animals.

But while many wildebeest perish in the course of the migration, many more are born during the calving season. Wildebeest are known to be very prolific, and at the peak calving season, up to 8,000 calves are born every day. As you shall find, the calving season mostly takes place on the Serengeti side and is the stillest phase of the migration.

The Migration in Months

January

The wildebeest herds are in the Serengeti National Park, specifically in Southern Serengeti regions around Lake Ndutu and the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. It is also the calving season in January, making it one of the best times to catch big cat hunts.

However, high-speed chases are rare. The many calves born provide an easy meal for lions, leopards, brown hyenas, and wild dogs that rule the Serengeti plains.

February

The grass is still lush in the Southern Serengeti, Ngorongoro, and Ndutu areas, so there isn’t much movement around this time.

The mating season commences, and the testosterone surges in the males see them frequently lock horns as they jostle for mating rights with receptive females.

March

Though the animals are still in the south, they have significantly reduced the grazing pasture.

The little grass remaining on the plains begins to wither, prompting the herds to gather as they prime themselves for the long journey north. This month also sees the last calves born.

April

The journey begins in earnest as the wildebeest herds head northward. Instinctively, even the animals that had wandered to different regions within the Serengeti now begin to advance north.

The animals frequently split again, and the splinter herds wander a bit from the migration paths in search of pasture. However, mothers and their calves mostly keep up with the main herds.

May

Now, the migration is in full gear. As water sources dry up within the Serengeti, the animals’ drive to head north is stronger than ever.

Gradually, most of the herds funnel up into the western and central Serengeti. Columns of up to 40 kilometers can be witnessed as the migration heads to the Grumeti River.

June

The western and central Serengeti regions still boast much of the action in the Great Migration safari.

The weather is much cooler and drier, and the plains are somewhat dusty.

July

The animals get to their first major obstacle in the migration path – the Grumeti River.

This is one of the best times to witness the migration, as hundreds of the crossing herds fall to the mighty Nile crocodiles that reside in the river. More animals panic and in the confusion, are trampled to death.

August

The herds that survived the crocodile onslaught in the Grumeti River proceed to northern Serengeti, where they feast on the lusher grass as they advance further north.

The animals begin to seamlessly cross into the Mara River as the two parks overlap. If you’ve been following the action from the Tanzanian side, remember that you’ll need a passport to cross over to Kenya.

September

Splinter groups begin to emerge again. Some herds cross the Mara River into the Masai Mara and others remain in northern Serengeti.

Like the Grumeti River, the Mara River also claims a few hundreds of lives.

October

The Masai Mara National Reserve is the best place to catch all the action. The Mara plains are flooded with both wildebeest and tourists. Ideally, plan a 4 days or 3 days Masai Mara safari. This will allow you enough time to view the migrating herd and other animals that reside inside the Mara.

November

The herds have almost depleted all the grass in the Mara plains. It begins to rain on the Serengeti side of the ecosystem.

The wildebeest now graze towards the Mara River as they prepare themselves to make the journey back to Tanzania.

December

The wildebeest herds are in north-eastern Serengeti, around the Lobo area. The calving season begins yet again, as does the migration cycle.

Evidently, making the most of your Great Wildebeest Migration requires meticulous planning. Therefore, we cannot overemphasize the significance of working with tour companies that understand the routes followed in this historic journey.

Def Leppard To Release ‘The Early Years 79-81’ Boxset in March Featuring Previously Unreleased Music

0

On March  20, legendary British rock ‘n’ roll icons and Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductees Def Leppard will release The Early Years 79-81 Boxset – the definitive collection of the band’s early music .

The Early Years 79-81 boxset represents the band’s first two albums, On Through The Night (1980) and High ‘N’ Dry (1981), and has been prepared in conjunction with singer Joe Elliott who has acted as executive producer on the set. The mastering has been done by the band’s long serving sound engineer Ronan McHugh.

This deluxe set comes with 5-CDs consisting of the original album remastered, B-sides, rarities and re-mix versions, Radio One sessions, Live from Reading and the first ever appearance of an unreleased and newly mixed show from Oxford in 1980. These remasters have been highly anticipated, and much requested, by Def Leppard fans globally.

The album also features an instant grat track, the much sought-after Nick Tauber produced version of “Rock Brigade”, which was originally pencilled as a single for the UK but was never released at the time. Today, 40 years on, the track receives its first release.

Listen to the track HERE

Joe Elliott says, ‘Well the fans asked, and we listened! Really excited to have our early years reworked with a load of rare material including the newly unearthed Live at the Oxford New Theatre, recorded on the 1980 UK tour …. It’s been a trip putting this boxset together and I hope you all enjoy listening to it as much as we did working on it! ”

On Through The Night, the band’s debut album, was released in 1980 and immediately put the rock world on notice. The band were destined for big things with the album charting at #15 in the UK and #51 in the US. Produced by Tom Allom (Judas Priest, Black Sabbath), it featured many of the band’s live favourites and some updated versions of early singles. The album achieved platinum status in 1989.

High ‘N’ Dry, the first of Def Leppard’s albums to be produced by Robert ‘Mutt’ Lange, was released in 1981. It reached #26 in the UK charts and #38 in the US, further cementing the bands status.

The Early Years 79-81 boxset includes a history of the band’s first two albums written by Mojo and Classic Rock writer Paul Elliott (no relation) featuring personal insights from the band on the making and releasing of those early records as well as rare photos and memorabilia.

Both albums have been remastered and will be available on 1CD version, black vinyl, and limited edition coloured vinyl.

2020 will see Def Leppard tour the USA with Mötley Crüe (with support from Poison and Joan Jett) – one of the most eagerly anticipated tours of the year. For USA tour dates please see www.defleppard.com

Metallica Scholars Initiative Enters Second Year

0

Following a stellar inaugural year with results including job placement rates exceeding 90%, the Metallica Scholars Initiative has confirmed a second year of its support of community colleges and their career and technical education programs—featuring the expansion of the program from 10 to 15 schools, as well as the addition of matching grants from new partners.

The Metallica Scholars Initiative was created in 2019 through a partnership between the band’s All Within My Hands foundation (AWMH) and the American Association of Community Colleges (AACC), a Washington, D.C. based organization representing the country’s more than 1,000 community colleges. 10 colleges from communities that had supported Metallica during its recent U.S. tours were selected via a competitive application process, each receiving $100,000 toward programs designed to support students training to enter the American workforce.

Final reports from all 10 schools and their more than 700 first-wave Metallica Scholars revealed an overall 80-90% program completion rate, and 95% job placement for those Metallica Scholars who completed their certifications/studies.

Year two of the Metallica Scholars Initiative will add five more community colleges, bringing the total number of schools to 15. It will also be receiving matching grants from new partners supplementing All Within My Hands’ cumulative $1.5 million contribution.

“Our 2019 Metallica Scholars have exceeded expectations and inspired us in more ways than we could have possibly imagined,” said Metallica’s Lars Ulrich. “We’re really excited to be able to expand the initiative in its second year, assisting more students in achieving their dreams and transforming their lives in 2020.”

“The impact of the Metallica Scholars Initiative has been extremely gratifying,” said Dr. Edward Frank, Executive Director of All Within My Hands. “We are indebted to all the schools, the AACC, and co-sponsors such as Wolverine, for their dedication to making this program successful and their help in changing the lives of so many people. This transformative effect is exactly what the band and the board had hoped for when we started this program.”

“The colossal reputation of Metallica has given these colleges, and the trades they are supporting, new life and attention,” said Jennifer Worth, AACC Senior Vice President Workforce and Economic Development. “It has been an honor and a privilege to have the band’s and foundation board of directors trust to design and implement programs that will change the lives of hard working Americans looking to advance.”

The AWMH Foundation was established in 2017 by Metallica as a means to give back to the people and places that have supported the band, and to engage Metallica fans in philanthropic efforts. In addition to combatting hunger through an alliance with Feeding America, AWMH is focused on supporting sustainable communities through workforce education. All expenses of the foundation are covered by the band, the board, and a few special friends, so that 100% of donations go to the organizations it supports. AWMH is a registered 501(c)3 non-profit organization.

As the voice of the nation’s community colleges, the American Association of Community Colleges (AACC), delivers educational and economic opportunity for 12 million diverse students in search of the American Dream. Uniquely dedicated to access and success for all students, AACC’s nearly 1,100 member colleges provide an on-ramp to degree attainment, skilled careers and family-supporting wages. Located in Washington, D.C., AACC advocates for these not-for-profit, public-serving institutions to ensure they have the resources and support they need to deliver on the mission of increasing economic mobility for all.

Kim Mitchell to be Inducted into Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame

0

The Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame (CSHF) has partnered with North America’s leading entertainment festival and conference, Canadian Music Week (CMW), to celebrate the induction of rock legend, songwriter, and broadcaster Kim Mitchell to the Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame. Mitchell will be honoured during a special presentation by CSHF, and joined by friend and musician Ed Robertson of Barenaked Ladies to perform on stage.

The induction will take place as part of CMW’s Canadian Music & Broadcast Industry Awards on Thursday, May 21 at the Bluma Appel Theatre in Toronto. CMW recently announced its first slate of special awards recipients including Buffy Sainte-Marie who will receive the Allan Slaight Humanitarian Spirit Award, Debra Rathwell to the Canadian Music Industry Hall of Fame, along with Erin Davis & Nevin Grant into the Broadcast Hall of Fame.

Mitchell, through leading Max Webster, defined ‘alternative’ and ‘indie’ long before the words became clichés. He’s achieved critical acclaim and multi-platinum commercial success over a storied career spanning five decades, and is among Canada’s most respected singers, songwriters and guitar players. In addition to being the frontman, guitarist, and lead writer with his writing partner Pye Dubois of the influential and eclectic band Max Webster, he rose from there to prominence and massive Canadian success as an award-winning solo artist.

He is credited with penning (in partnership with Pye Dubois) and recording numerous classic hits including “Go For Soda”, “Rock N Roll Duty”, “Patio Lanterns”, “I am a Wild Party”, All We Are”, and “Easy To Tame” – all which have become part of the Canadian musical genome. Mitchell received the JUNO Award on three separate occasions including for Male Artist of the Year (1990) and Album of the Year (Shakin’ Like A Human Being, 1987); and recognized with numerous SOCAN Awards. With his band Max Webster, he released five albums which generated many Canadian top 100 hits including “Let Go the Line,” “A Million Vacations,” and “Paradise Skies.”

In the early 2000’s while maintaining a busy touring schedule, Mitchell was invited to join the on-air staff at the CORUS flagship station Q107 in Toronto. He left Q107 in 2014 but not before he had become one of the most popular and most listened to afternoon drive DJs in the country.

Mitchell went back to the recording studio in 2018 to mark his first solo recording in half a dozen years. He got together with his friends the Barenaked Ladies to re-record his song, the Max Webster hit “Diamonds Diamonds”. Max Webster and this song in particular was a great influence on the members of the Barenaked Ladies. The track and video were released in 2019 through Anthem Entertainment (formerly Ole Label Group). Mitchell has just finished up his 15th studio recording, The Big Fantasize. The full new studio recording produced by friend and Grammy Award-winning producer, Greg Wells (Keith Urban, Adele, Twenty One Pilots), will be released soon.

Today, Mitchell and his band of accomplished musicians tour the country selling out theatres, casinos and festivals coast to coast. His fanbase, which continues to grow is comprised of newer fans in their late teens and early twenties through to fans that have been following him since the late ‘70s, will attest that being at one of Kim Mitchell’s concert is like being at a live recording of a greatest hits box set.

Following Kim Mitchell’s induction presentation at Canadian Music Week, the Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame will recognize his songwriting accomplishments in the National Music Centre, located at Studio Bell, in Calgary. The National Music Centre is the physical home of the Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame and will continue to honour and preserve the legacy of new inductees through exhibitions which feature stories, exclusive artifacts, and one-of-a-kind memorabilia.

THE SMALL GLORIES follow Folk Alliance International Artist of the Year WIN with 2020 JUNO Nomination

0

Wailin’ Jennys alum Cara Luft and multi-instrumentalist JD Edwards’ musical project The Small Glories is receiving anything but… The duo’s latest release Assiniboine & The Red has received a 2020 JUNO Award Nomination for Traditional Roots Album of the Year!

Their first JUNO Award nomination as The Small Glories, the 10 track sophomore release plays through like a Canadian travelogue-meets-love letter of sorts as the pair celebrate the Canadian Prairies; the album title references the junction of two rivers, the Assiniboine (pronounced ‘uh-sin-uh-boin’) and the Red, in the duo’s hometown of Winnipeg, Manitoba, and celebrates the happenstance meeting of Luft and Edwards.

Recorded in Winnipeg, Manitoba during a bracingly cold Canadian spring, Assiniboine & The Red reunited the duo with producer Neil Osborne, frontman and songwriter for the iconic Canadian rock band 54-40. “Although he’s not a ‘folk artist,’ he has the heart of a folk singer and firmly believes in the power of song and in serving the song,” says Luft of Osborne. “He also believed in the importance of keeping us rooted in our folk/roots tradition; he didn’t want us to stray too far outside the box.”

“We’re folk singers, we try to write stuff that people can relate to,” says Edwards, whose looming stage presence and penetrating eyes find him the yin to Luft’s petite, snort-laughing yang.

“I remember being very excited about this collection of songs and getting to record them at home in Winnipeg,” Edwards continues. “I was so glad to hear that Gilles Fournier (bass) and Mark Mariash (percussion/drums) agreed to come back and record another album with us. Getting the band back together along with Neil Osborne at the helm had my mind thinking of how we were going to be taking these songs to places we had never dreamed of going.”

The album is rich with a sense of place and geography and is bookended by two songs that pay tribute to locales. The opener, “Alberta,” is a love song to Luft’s home province and is “dedicated to anyone who is new to a place and surprises themselves by having their heart stolen by the land.” The raucous closing track, “Winnipeg,” is a spirited celebration of their hometown, “a city full of heart and guts and soul,” Luft says. “It’s a city of many languages and cultures where a big beautiful sun, the great equalizer, shines down on everyone all year long.”

Other stand-out tracks include “Long Long Moon,” written on the island province of Prince Edward Island, where the history and stories of a sea-faring community inspired this song of loss, love, and waiting. “Don’t Back Down” was written for all the dying small prairie towns, and their sister Maritime towns that are experiencing a mass exodus, and for those who have chosen to stay.

Luft describes an audience favourite, “Sing,” as a protest song for our time. “It’s a song to roust us out of our complacency and our indifference, a song to challenge our era of divisiveness and polarization to remind us what ‘it’ is all about, and what it’s not,” she says.

“Each of the songs on the album is a co-write, either between the two of us, ” Luft explains, “or between us and other writers, which we feel has helped create a very unique and powerful collection of songs.” Co-writers include some of Canada’s finest — Lynn Miles, James Keelaghan, Catherine MacLellan, Bruce Gurthro, Ashley Condon and Andrina Turenne — as well as American poet Glenn Bowie.

“Many of the songs were written around the theme of home — where we call home, where others call home — and the various stories and histories and landscape of these specific locations.

“We focused on Canadian places; we are Canadian after all!”

Foo Fighters: 25th Anniversary Van Tour To Revisit Stops Along 1995 Tour

0

Congratulations: You’re old! You’ve been going to see Foo Fighters shows for 25 years now! What better way to celebrate than joining the band in commemorating its silver anniversary in some of the same cities where the first FF shows took place in 1995? Beginning April 12 at the Talking Stick Resort Arena in Phoenix AZ, the Foo Fighters’ 2020 Van Tour will do just that, hitting a number of the same spots that Dave Grohl, Nate Mendel and Pat Smear trailblazed in a Dodge van all those years ago—in arenas this time, because aside from many of those clubs on that 1995 trek having since ceased to exist, squeezing a 2020 FF show into the few that are still around would just be too insane…

… or would it? Stay tuned for the answer to that question. Or answers…

In addition to customary all-night rock n roll marathons from 1995 Van Tour veterans Grohl, Mendel and Smear and their longtime comrades Taylor Hawkins, Chris Shiflett and Rami Jaffee, each and every 2020 Van Tour show will feature a very special opening attraction: A sneak peek at an excerpt from Dave Grohl’s brand new documentary WHAT DRIVES US. Foo Fighters’ 2020 Van Tour will feature a short preview from Dave’s deep dive into what possesses a particular tribe of human beings to leave behind jobs, families, relationships and any semblance of sanity to climb into a busted ass econoline and take their music to the people–or at least a dozen or so of them here and there. WHAT DRIVES US explores motivations, recounts personal anecdotes, and explores the physical and psychological toll of touring in vans via interviews with members of van tour veteran bands ranging from Black Flag and Dead Kennedys to Metallica and The Beatles, and many, many more.

Citi is the official presale credit card of The Van Tour 2020. As such, Citi cardmembers will have access to purchase presale tickets beginning Tuesday, February 18 at 12pm ET until Thursday, February 20 at 10pm local time through Citi Entertainment®.
