U2 Announce 2020 Launch of U2X RADIO with SiriusXM and Pandora

0

SiriusXM today announced a new creative partnership with U2 to launch U2X RADIO, which will include a dedicated SiriusXM channel and exclusive content available only to SiriusXM subscribers and Pandora listeners.

The announcement was made by U2, live from The Joshua Tree Tour stage at the Saitama Super Arena in Tokyo, Japan, with a cut-in from frontman Bono to Howard Stern on his SiriusXM channel “Howard 100,” which saw the tour’s massive 200×40 ft screen light up with a video tribute to radio ahead of a live performance of the band’s hit ‘Elevation’. A simultaneous stream by U2 on Facebook Live allowed fans around the world to hear the news of U2X RADIO as it happened.

U2 has sold more than 170 million records worldwide and has won 22 Grammy awards, more than any other band or group. Their most recent album ‘Songs Of Experience’ (2017) debuted at #1 on the Billboard 200, setting the recently declared “Artist Of The Decade” (Pollstar Magazine) apart as the only band in history to have topped the chart in four successive decades, including eight albums that reached number one in the U.S.

U2X RADIO will launch in 2020 with the band themselves taking to the airwaves and will feature music from U2’s acclaimed decades-long career; never before heard interviews and live concert recordings; favorites and surprises from the archive; band curated playlists sharing personal influences both new and old; plus content celebrating their Dublin roots and much, much more.

Bono said – “Generally when I open my mouth people prefer if I’m singing, but on U2X RADIO, maybe they’ll forgive me the odd interruption…”

Adam Clayton said – “I’m not entirely sure what this is but what it isn’t is an opportunity to hear some bass solos… U2 24/7. Welcome to the last 43 years of my life.”

Larry Mullen said – “It all sounds exhausting to me but if people really want to listen to us for 24 hours a day, this is the way to do it.”

The Edge added – “So I get to sit around having a laugh with my musician friends and playing our favorite music. As I always say, I have the best job in the world!”

“U2 has unparalleled influence as musicians, social activists and global cultural icons. The band’s ability to evolve has enabled it to create a large and diverse library of hit songs, as well as four-plus decades’ worth of renowned live performances. U2X RADIO and the offering on Pandora will provide listeners new access and insights into one of the world’s most accomplished bands. We could not be more excited to welcome Bono, The Edge, Adam and Larry to the SiriusXM family,” said Scott Greenstein, President and Chief Content Officer, SiriusXM.

U2 joins LeBron James’ UNINTERRUPTED, platinum recording artist Drake and comic book giant Marvel Entertainment in coming to SiriusXM and Pandora for exclusive content and access. They also join other iconic and leading artists who are featured on their own dedicated SiriusXM channels, such as Phish, Garth Brooks, The Beatles, Bruce SpringsteenTom Petty, Pearl Jam, Elvis Presley and Frank Sinatra.

From the beginning, U2 were marked out by their drive and ambition, forming as a band “… before they could play”. Bono, The Edge, Larry Mullen and Adam Clayton met at Mount Temple School and formed U2 in 1978 before signing to Island Records. Acknowledged as one of the best live acts in the world, U2 have released 14 studio albums and have sales in excess of 157 million. They have won numerous awards; including 22 Grammys, an Oscar nomination and the Amnesty International Ambassador of Conscience. In 2003 they won a Golden Globe Award for Best Original Song, ‘The Hands That Built America’, featured in Gangs of New York. 2014 saw U2 nominated for an Oscar for ‘Ordinary Love’ from the feature film Mandela: Long Walk To Freedom, as well as take home the Golden Globe Award for Best Original Song.

U2’s fourteenth studio album Songs Of Experience – the companion release to 2014’s Songs Of Innocence – was released in December 2017 and includes tracks ‘Get Out Of Your Own Way’ and ‘You’re The Best Thing About Me’. The new album debuted at #1 on the Billboard 200, setting U2 apart as the only band in history to have topped the chart in four successive decades. In 2018, the band hit the road with the eXPERIENCE + iNNOCENCE Tour, an arena production which saw U2 continue to push the creative boundaries of technology and engineering.

And following 2017’s acclaimed stadium run with The Joshua Tree Tour – the record-breaking smash hit tour celebrating the band’s seminal 1987 album The Joshua Tree – 2019 sees The Joshua Tree Tour visit New ZealandAustralia, and Japan, as well as bring “the biggest band in the world” (The Guardian) to SingaporeSeoulManila and Mumbai for the very first time.

Tiesto Teams With Jaz Dhami For ‘Bomb Bae’

0

Language and cultural borders in pop and electronic music continue to blur with a remix of UK-based singer Jaz Dhami’s track ‘Bomb Bae’ by world-renowned DJ and producer, Tiësto.

Already a dance floor anthem in the Punjabi Pop scene, ‘Bomb Bae’, released in September 2019, is now accessible to global dance music fans. The remix is supported by Artist Originals (AO), JioSaavn’s in-house label for global South Asian artists.

Tiësto is known for his creative collaborations and remixes, including a Grammy-winning remix of John Legend’s ‘All of Me’. Although Tiësto has toured in India three times, this is his first remix of an Indian-language song.

“The thing I love about music is that it is a universal language that transcends cultural boundaries. This is my first time remixing an Indian song, but not my last! The energy of music and dancing is all about feeling, not a language… and this song has a great vibe and feel to it!” Tiësto commented.

A lyrical celebration of the varied shades of love, Dhami’s ‘Bomb Bae’ captures the essence of loving and romancing in the city of Mumbai (affectionately still called Bombay). Through its fusion of Punjabi-English lyrics and R&B beats, the original track captures the ups and downs of love in the sprawling, chaotic metropolis that is Mumbai.

The emotional rollercoaster of Mumbai is not unlike the build-ups and drops of an electronic music track. Tiësto’s treatment of ‘Bomb Bae’ weaves Dhami’s lyrics into kicks, drops and 132 bpm to create a big room electronic sound that is massively popular from L.A. to Bombay.

Speaking on the collaboration, Jaz Dhami said, “When I made ‘Bomb Bae’ I knew it was special from hearing back the first melodies that Eren, Alan and I put down. Having Tiësto on board for the remix is definitely a treat for the EDM fans and more importantly the scene. Panjabi music has a global appeal. It’s good to see DJs like Tiësto co-signing our movement.”

The remix of ‘Bomb Bae’ represents another step into the global spotlight for Jaz Dhami, who has established himself as a global artist with a true desi soul. He was the first South Asian artist to collaborate on the official BBC Music Launch Song, which featured 27 international artists including prominent names such as Pharrell Williams, Stevie Wonder, One Direction, Elton John and Sam Smith.

The ‘Bomb Bae’ [Tiësto Remix] is the latest in a series of unique global collaborations facilitated by JioSaavn’s AO. Artist Originals has been delivering ground-breaking collaborations with artists like Marshmello for the track ‘BIBA’; Indian hip-hop stars Divine and Naezy’s ‘NY Se Mumbai’ with Nas; as well as a viral EDM remix of ‘Bom Diggy’ by Dillon Francis.

Tiësto is a GRAMMY® Award-winning, platinum-certified, international icon. The DJ and producer is the only artist to ever hold the titles of “The Greatest DJ of All Time” courtesy of Mixmag, “#1 DJ” according to Rolling Stone, and “The Godfather of EDM” as proclaimed by Billboard. From his high-profile residency at Hakkasan to his crossover success, Tiësto created the blueprint that defines what it means to be a success in today’s dance music world.

Rational Youth Release ‘Cold War Night Life’ LP

0

New wave pioneers Rational Youth are releasing a deluxe expanded and remastered edition of their seminal 1982 debut album ‘Cold War Night Life’ on both CD and double gatefold vinyl.

This extended version is now available as a double LP on translucent vinyl and is also streamable on Spotify and other digital platforms. Now it is being made available on CD. This expanded reissue features extensive liner notes, testimonials, and rare photos from the band’s personal archives. It also includes both the original 1982 album tracks and all of the related original extended remixes and singles.

When ‘Cold War Night Life’ was originally released in 1982, it was one of the first all-synth pop albums released in Canada. It became one of the biggest-selling Canadian independent albums at the time. The album was also distributed overseas, even making the Top Ten on Polish State Radio, despite the fact that Poland was still behind the Iron Curtain. It charted on college radio across Canada and made inroads into commercial radio, particularly in Quebec, where the French version of ‘City of Night’ (‘Cité Phosphore’) went Top Ten.

Later, when the Berlin Wall came down in 1989, the track ‘Dancing on the Berlin Wall’ was re-released as a single across Europe, spreading like wildfire.

The cult following for ‘Cold War Night Life’ has remained steady over the years, with many contemporary synth bands citing it as a seminal influence, including hugely popular artists like Italy’s Frozen Autumn, Sweden’s Covenant, Germany’s Psyche and Australia’s Parallox.

“The most remarkable thing about making this album, from an historical perspective, was the fact that we were making an all-synthesizer pop album, and in Montreal in 1981-82 that was pretty new,” says Tracy Howe.

“A lot of our arrangements and all the synth sounds were worked out at home and sequenced, so when we got to the studio we would set all the synths up and patch everything, tell the engineer to put machine in record and roll the tape, we’d start the MC-4 MicroComposer and half a song would instantly go to tape. The rock and roll engineers we had were kind of stunned by this, and by the fact that we were using a drum machine (a Roland TR-808, one of the first on Canadian shores).”

Rational Youth was formed in 1981 in Montreal, Quebec by Tracy Howe and Bill Vorn, both of whom idolized Kraftwerk. Considered one of Canada’s first synthpop groups, their second gig saw them opening for Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark. After releasing their first single ‘I Want To See The Light’ in 1981 for YUL Records, an independent label established by Marc de Mouy and Pat Deserio, Howe and Vorn were joined by Kevin Komoda.

Following Vorn’s departure in 1983, the group – now consisting of Howe (vocals, keyboards, guitars), Komoda (keyboards), Denis Duran (bass) and Angel Calvo (drums) — was signed to Capitol Records and released their eponymous EP that year. This was followed by the 1985 release of the ‘Heredity’ LP, produced by Howe and Dee Long, with three charting singles. Howe released it as the sole remaining member.

After retiring the project in 1986, continued interest led to a 1997 CD reissue of ‘Cold War Night Life’ and a reunion concert for Howe and Vorn in Sweden. In 1999, Rational Youth, with Howe joined by keyboardists Jean-Claude Cutz and Dave Rout, released ‘To the Goddess Electricity’, the first LP in 14 years, on Sweden’s October label. The trio toured Scandinavia until playing their final concert at the 2001 Tinitus Festival in Stockholm.

Tracy Howe and Bill Vorn united again in 2009 at the initiative of Marc Demouy, recording a new version of their 1982 track ‘Dancing On The Berlin Wall’ in honour of the twentieth anniversary of the wall’s dismantling. In 2010, it was issued as an EP by YUL Records on CD, followed by 2011’s ‘City Of Night /Cite Phosphore’ EP on CD, consisting of re-recordings of this early single plus remixed versions of the original recording.

In 2016, Rational Youth (now consisting of Tracy and Gaenor Howe), released the ‘Future Past Tense’ EP through Artoffact Records. That year, they appeared on the ‘Heresy’ compilation, released by the Cold War Night Life label. A play on the title ‘Heredity’, this album also featured covers of Rational Youth tracks by 18 artists from various countries, including former bandmates Dave Rout and Kevin Komoda.

The new edition of ‘Cold War Night Life’ is available on CD and digitally via Bandcamp. Vinyl can be ordered separately via Music Vaultz.

Rational Youth have two upcoming shows with China Crisis – on Jan. 25 at Toronto’s Revival Bar and Jan. 26 at Mississauga’s Classic Bowl. Fans can look forward to further European dates in early 2020.

Rockstars Get an Afterlife in the Gaming Genre

0

Gaming and music might have a symbiotic relationship, but it goes much further than just providing the soundtrack to some shoot ‘em up. The value of the rockstar has exploded in all areas of gaming from casinos to mobile and the big open-world adventures popular on Xbox and Playstation. Could this explain the enduring allure of the aging rockstar?

The casino scene is prolonging the touring potential of old-time rockers

Take KC & the Sunshine Band. Half of the 23 dates on their latest concert tour were at casinos. Casino venues are ideal tour stops according to lead singer Harry Wayne Casey, as most have a multitude of hotel rooms, restaurants, luxury facilities and of course the gaming tables themselves. “I try not to play for free,” he says.

In fact, regional casinos’ growth across the US has seen a number of states open Las Vegas-style resorts with the ability to hold concert performances. And this increased opportunity for musicians has given fans another chance to see their favorite stars of yesterday still performing like they were back then.

In recent years, the Rolling Stones, Coldplay, Kiss, Guns n Roses and even guitar legend Santana have all had residencies in Las Vegas-style casino resorts big and small across the US, not only prolonging their music legacy but thoroughly entertaining sell-out crowds.

The video slots phenomena

This gaming and rock connection goes one step further. There are a number of online gaming titles that use the enduring image and swagger of the rockstar to promote games. One quick look on the mobile slots at Lucky Pants Bingo and you can still find Ozzy Osbourne rocking the reels on the Ozzy Osbourne Video Slots where players get to grab their air guitars and rock out with the Prince of Darkness.

Then there is the Guns N’ Roses Video Slots with its epic soundtrack including Appetite for Destruction and Welcome to the Jungle. And of course the legendary Jimi Hendrix Online Slots will absolutely have you slamming the keyboard like it was 1975.

Gaming titles utilize the power of 80s and 90s rock legends

And it’s not just video slots that have kept rockers rocking either. Gaming fans will also have no doubt enjoyed the soundtrack of the Grand Theft Auto V and the Los Santos Rock Radio show hosted by Kenny Loggins featuring rock anthems from the likes of Queen, Steve Winwood, Def Leppard, Robert Plant, Stevie Nicks, Foreigner, The Cult, and the king of soft rock, Kenny himself.

One of the biggest console games ever to come out has to be Guitar Hero, which released three iterations of the game and couldn’t have existed without the music provided by some of the greatest rock stars ever.

Video games have always managed to utilize that heavy metal relationship within games. All the way back to Quake in the 1990s then featuring the powerful sound of Nine Inch Nails all the way to the 2016 reboot of Doom, Gods of War, Twisted Metal and Metal Gear Solid all trading off this unique guitar and metal-heavy theme that put gamers firmly in the hot seat.

There is certainly a strong argument for gaming, mobile-oriented slots and casino venues in keeping alive the aura of the rock star, aging or otherwise and it has, for many of them, meant an afterlife of performing that might otherwise not have been nearly so lucrative or readily available to them.

VR is Here and The Music Industry Can’t Wait

0

Technology is moving at a rapid pace. Augmented reality and virtual reality are on the rise, and the applications of these advances are only just becoming apparent. Already both of these new developments have found their way into the gaming industry, with AR being incorporated into popular apps and games like Pokemon Go and into online live dealer casino games. However, other industries are poised ready to seize the potential, with the music industry at the forefront of change.

Marshmello’s Fortnite concert was a ground-break precedent in both the gaming and music industries, showing how they can converge to promote artists’ careers in new and exciting ways. More than ten million people attended Marshmello’s concert in real-time, making it one of history’s most far-reaching virtual musical events. This is just one of the ways in which these two sectors are beginning to work more closely together to bring music within easier reach of more people, and to make it a more immersive and engaging experience for listeners.

The VR Music Video

Virtual reality is beginning to become a go-to medium through which artists can connect with their fans. Facebook and YouTube have both launched 360-degree video posting platforms which have led to more people creating immersive video content. Musicians have been leading the way in this, transporting their viewers into more interactive experiences.

Virtual reality is making it possible to physically enter one of your favorite music videos. The Amplify VR platform is just one example that allows audiences to watch a music video of their choice in a reactive and immersive VR environment, giving users the opportunity to actually interact with content by applying different audio effects, remixing their experience and manipulating environments via movement.

This use of technology enables fans to enjoy their favorite music and artists in entirely immersive and new ways. Even 2D video content can be turned into a three-dimensional experience, meaning artists no longer need to create new content solely for virtual reality, significantly reducing their costs.

Allowing Remote Viewing

No matter how much you love a band or artist, you can’t always make it to their concert. Now, you can enjoy the experience of actually being there at the venue with VR concerts. Fans can experience the action from close up, actually being able to move about the event and experience it from different vantage points – even from the stage. Coachella has already harnessed the potential of VR remote viewing. At their 2016 event, they allowed festival-goers to watch videos of the performing artists and discover the festival grounds all in three hundred and sixty degrees through a headset.

The Possibilities Of Change In Music Education

Of course, the music industry isn’t all about performance – it’s about teaching a new generation of players too. Virtual reality is set to change how we practice and learn musical instruments and how we use them to entertain ourselves. There are numerous apps already in development that will make musical learning a more exciting and shareable experience. Teach-U:VR is one solution that gives individuals a more immersive and engaging way of playing drums and piano in virtual reality. Users are able to use a headset to play virtual instruments and to interact with other people in a shared virtual space. This opens up the possibility for music education even to those who are unable to afford lessons or who are unable to attend.

Apps like this will redefine the ways in which we understand how music is created. Music lovers and music creators alike will find new ways of expressing themselves and experimenting with sound that has never been seen before. Not only will they be able to enhance their existing musical abilities, but they will also be able to learn more about how music is developed in an interactive and engaging manner.

While virtual reality remains in its infancy at the moment, there have already been significant changes in the way it allows us to interact with the creation of music and how we listen to it. It is already allowing us to see, hear and experience music in a brand new, nontraditional way. Virtual reality is set to create more personal, more impressive and more thrilling musical experiences and with new digital technology advances lying ahead, we can only begin to imagine what music’s future will hold as VR grows and develops.

Whatever changes are set to take place in the music industry, you can rest assured that virtual reality will almost certainly be a part of them.
