The Legendary Downchild Blues Band Announce 50th Anniversary Tour

0

DOWNCHILD are celebrating 50 years of the blues – and taking the party across North America.

Hot on the heels of their JUNO-nominated 2017 album Something I’ve Done, THE LEGENDARY DOWNCHILD BLUES BAND have announced their 50th Anniversary Tour, bringing their iconic sound and timeless hits to theatres and festivals in Canada and the U.S.

Kicking off at Grossman’s Tavern in Toronto, the place where it all began, the year-long tour takes the Canadian blues icons from B.C. to the Maritimes, and features a special appearance by Blues Brother Dan Aykroyd for a main stage, headline performance at the Rochester International Jazz Festival in June. Tickets for most shows go ON SALE Friday, April 12, 2019 at 10:00 AM in most markets here.

It’s hard to believe it’s been half a century since, bandleader, songwriter, guitarist and harmonica player Donnie “Mr. Downchild” Walsh and his brother, the late Richard “Hock” Walsh, formed The Legendary DOWNCHILD Blues Band in Toronto in June 1969.

From humble beginnings, DOWNCHILD performed their first gig at Grossman’s Tavern in Toronto. Fittingly, the band will return to the infamous juke joint for a rare, intimate club performance, to kick off their year-long 50th Anniversary Tour, with a SOLD-OUT show on June 19, 2019, that will no doubt go down in history.

Named after a Sonny Boy Williamson II song, DOWNCHILD’s story begins when Donnie “Mr. Downchild” Walsh was a mere teenager and got his first taste of Blues at a sweet 16 birthday party for his girlfriend. “I was absolutely amazed by the music and, like most people who heard blues, started looking for more,” says Donnie, who soon discovered artists like Muddy Waters, Jimmy Read, John Lee Hooker and B.B. King.

Inspired by those classic sounds, DOWNCHILD launched an unstoppable career that has included 18 albums, countless awards and sold-out shows around the globe. The band’s 1971 debut Bootleg, one of the first independent albums in Canada, was recorded in a makeshift studio in parking garage at Rochdale College. Soon after, they scored their first smash hit with a jumping version of Big Joe Turner’s classic “Flip Flop & Fly.”

“I was pretty lucky to get a hit record just a few years after starting the band. As I like to say, if you have a hit record, the rest is geography. You just get in the van and go, and that’s what we did. For the longest time, we played 250 to 300 dates a year,” says Donnie.

DOWNCHILD came to international prominence as the inspiration for Hollywood stars Dan Aykroyd and the late John Belushi’s hit film The Blues Brothers. In fact, two Downchild songs, “Shotgun Blues” and “(I Got Everything I Need) Almost” were even covered on The Blues Brothers’ 1978 multi-platinum album Briefcase Full of Blues.

The current lineup of DOWNCHILD features some of the most well-respected musicians in the country, who have performed together for over 25 years: Lead singer and harmonica player CHUCK JACKSON, PAT CAREY on tenor sax, MIKE FITZPATRICK on drums, GARY KENDALL on bass, and former American super-group rocker MICHAEL FONFARA (of Rhinoceros/Lou Reed fame) on keyboards.

John Lennon’s ‘Imagine – Raw Studio Mixes’ To Be Released On Vinyl For First Time As Limited Edition Record Store Day Release

0

One of the many highlights of John Lennon’s Imagine – The Ultimate Collection, the immersive and intimate super deluxe edition of his legendary solo album, released this past October on what would have been his 78th birthday, were the Raw Studio Mixes. Helmed by engineer Rob Stevens under the supervision of Yoko Ono Lennon, these aggressively visceral and emotionally touching mixes capture the exact moment Lennon and The Plastic Ono Band recorded each song, raw and live on the soundstage at the center of Ascot Sound Studios, at John & Yoko’s home in Tittenhurst. The Raw Studio recordings are devoid of the effects (reverb, tape delays, etc.) that were added when co-producers John, Yoko and Phil Spector created the additional layers of production sound and added John’s orchestral arrangements in New York.

Exclusively for Record Store Day, this Saturday, April 13, UMe will release Imagine – Raw Studio Mixes on vinyl for the first time as a limited edition Record Store Day First release, pressed on audiophile grade 180-gram black vinyl. Previously only available in the Imagine—Ultimate Collection box set, these raw studio recordings reveal whole new levels of sonic depth, definition and clarity to these timeless songs.

The Raw Studio Mixes allow the listener to hear Lennon and The Plastic Ono Band exactly as they sounded when recording the watershed album and are presented as recorded with several songs – “I Don’t Wanna Be a Soldier Mama, I Don’t Wanna Die,” “Gimme Some Truth,” “How Do You Sleep” and “Oh Yoko!” – extending past the final album versions. Of the Raw Studio mixes, CNET exclaimed, “I literally had goosebumps when I heard this music without added reverberation, orchestral strings, and other production bits and pieces. It’s as if I traveled back through time to be present at the sessions,” continuing, “Listening to the Raw Studio Mixes, Lennon’s vocals are so completely naked, they’re startling. I’ve never heard Lennon sound so real, so immediate and full of life, it was a real treat for this Beatles fan. When I closed my eyes, Lennon all but materialized in front of me!” Meanwhile, Billboard described the recordings as “simply the barest, driest version of the music, as if the listener was sitting in with the band,” and NPR Music enthused, “What is so striking about this recording is its starkness. Here you have John, sans the voice doubling he loved so much, none of the Phil Spector strings that shaped much of the character of the release we all came to know in 1971.”

These mixes have been pressed in the original album sequence appearing for the first time on vinyl.

Meanwhile, the B-52s have joined forces with Executive Producer Fred Armisen and Director Craig Johnson [Skelton Twins, Wilson, Alex Strangelove] to develop an authorized documentary film of the group.

The song already has over 2 million Spotify streams to date, received critical praise from Billboard, NYLON, Idolator, Popdust, EARMILK, Baeble, Ones To Watch and more, and continues to climb the Triple A Radio Chart. Fresh off the road with James Bay on his North American tour and Leon Bridges on his Australian tour, Noah is currently touring with Dean Lewis in Europe and the U.K. See the list of upcoming dates below.

In two short years, music quite literally carried 22-year-old singer, songwriter and artist Noah Kahan around the world—a long way from his native Strafford, VT (pop. 1,045) and the 133-acre tree farm where he resides. On the trip, the alternative troubadour notched an international hit in the form of “Hurt Somebody,” which racked up over 200 million global streams to date and went triple platinum in Australia and gold in Canada, Sweden, Norway, Netherlands, Switzerland and New Zealand. The song also peaked at #1 on the Top 40 radio charts in Australia for three weeks, making it the third most played song on the Australian airwaves in all of 2018 where Noah has become one of the most buzzworthy new acts. Meanwhile, his singles “Young Blood” and “False Confidence” also racked up millions of streams, as he sold out headline tours in North America, Europe, and the U.K. and hit the road with artists like George Ezra and Leon Bridges. Not to mention, he has garnered critical acclaim from Billboard, Stereogum, NYLON, Clash, Idolator, and more. In the midst of this whirlwind, Noah assembled his upcoming full-length debut album, Busyhead. The first single “Mess” illuminates his marked growth as a songwriter and storyteller by way of its biting lyrics and undeniable sing-a-long, underscoring a heartwarming and often hilarious portrait of hometown longing. Busyhead is set for release on June 14th.

Chase Atlantic Announce 2019 “Phases” Tour

0

Today, Chase Atlantic – comprised of Mitchel Cave, Clinton Cave and Christian Anthony – announce their 2019 Phases Tour presented by Ones to Watch & The Noise and produced by Live Nation. The tour will feature special guest Lauren Sanderson and include over 25+ dates across North America, kicking off on June 14 in Philadelphia, PA before concluding in Silver Spring, MD on July 25. See below for the full tour itinerary.

The tour is in support of the band’s upcoming sophomore album slated for this summer on BMG Records. The alt-pop trio are currently riding high on a wave of their own creation with the recent release of their much-anticipated third EP, DON’T TRY THIS, which finds Chase Atlantic operating at the height of their powers, with six songs that showcase the wide-ranging breadth of their abilities to reveal a darker side of their existence. “It all comes from a real place and it’s a good reflection of this point in our lives,” Mitchel says. “A lot of it is from out on the road and about our real-life experiences. We’re not trying to flex too hard on anyone, or say we’re doing any better than you are. Music is about enjoyment— we’re trying to make the best music we can and be as real as possible.”

Chase Atlantic are taking a similar approach to their new LP, fueled by their obsession with creation, songwriting, and beat-making and refusing to conform to any one sound. And as their spotlight only continues to grow, they understand that everything they need to get by is already in their possession. 2019 looks to be their biggest year yet.

Mitchel Cave and his older brother Clinton formed Chase Atlantic with their best friend, Christian Anthony, in 2014. Classically trained as musicians and singers, the brothers began their obsession with programming and production as teenagers. Spending days locked away in their bedrooms working on beats, they began combining sounds from their favorite genres—from pop to electro to rock and R&B—fusing together an experimental sound that retained catchiness and hooks. Adding live instrumentation and vocals to the mix, the trio recognized their work’s undeniable groove and edge, an eclectic and unique hybrid of dark, rhythmic, and emotional sound—not to mention their shared bond and ability to make singular decisions as a hive mind.

They began releasing their music online and quickly developed a following in their home country, with fans flocking to their infectious live shows and embracing the confident honesty in their storytelling. The viral single “Friends” caught the ears of Good Charlotte’s Joel and Benji Madden, who signed Chase Atlantic to their esteemed LA-based music company, MDDN, in 2016. They released a pair of EPs and a self-titled debut LP in 2017, leading to an endless string of sold-out headline shows and tours around the world, including festival slots at Lollapalooza, Bonnaroo, Firefly, Reading & Leeds, and Vans Warped Tour. Despite all the rapid-fire success, the band work hard to maintain and increase their high-level work ethic, sticking to their guns when it comes to their method of making music and refusing to compromise any of their creativity, control, or—most importantly—their joy.

The Raconteurs Announce North American Tour For “Help Us Stranger” Album

0

Hot on the heels of announcing their new album HELP US STRANGER, out June 21 via Third Man Records, The Raconteurs – Jack White, Brendan Benson, Jack Lawrence, and Patrick Keeler – have announced an extensive run of North American headline tour dates. These new dates, spanning from July to October, include previously-announced US festival appearances at Woodstock 50 and Railbird. The band will kick off their world tour with their first trip to Australia and New Zealand later this month, as well as stops in Japan, Europe, and the United Kingdom before returning to the US for their North American tour.

Tickets to the North American headline dates go on sale to the general public on Friday, April 12 at 10am local time.

Additionally, every online ticket purchased in North America for the new headline shows will include a physical copy of HELP US STRANGER on CD. Fans will also have the option to upgrade their CD to the standard black vinyl LP.

HELP US STRANGER is the Gramy Award-winning rock band’s third studio LP and first new album in more than a decade. Out on Friday, June 21, HELP US STRANGER sees the mighty combo reassembled, stronger and perhaps even more vital than ever before as they continue to push rock ‘n’ roll forward into its future, bonding prodigious riffs, blues power, sinewy psychedelia, Detroit funk, and Nashville soul via Benson and White’s uncompromising songcraft and the band’s steadfast musical muscle. With HELP US STRANGER, The Raconteurs have returned right when they are needed most, unified and invigorated with boundless ambition, infinite energy and a collectivist spirit operating at the peak of its considerable powers, once again creating a sound and fury only possible when all four of its members come together.
