Chevy dealer training video to convince customers that the El Camino is as good as the competition, 1981

The Black Keyes’ El Camino cover art depicts a minivan similar to one the group toured in early in their career, but in an inside joke, they named the record after the El Camino muscle car. A faux newspaper advertisement and parody car commercial playing on this joke were used to promote the record prior to release.

This commercial, however is real. Unlike a pickup truck, the El Camino was adapted from a two-door station wagon platform that integrated the cab and cargo bed into the body.

MOTÖRHEAD has announced the release of “Overkill/Bomber” on double picture disc 7″ vinyl, which will be released via BMG for Record Store Day, featuring a new 2019 remaster of the original “Overkill” single edit.

A 40th anniversary celebration of the loudest, dirtiest, bastard rock ‘n’ roll of 1979 – the year MOTÖRHEAD released the seminal Overkill and Bomber albums – the featured single edit was previously only available as the A side of the original 1979, 7″ single, “Overkill.” It will be released digitally for the first time ever on March 8, to coincide with its original release date.

This lavish double picture disc is housed in a gatefold sleeve, which features iconic photos of the band, shot by Paul Slattery on the February 8, 1979 in front of a huge MOTÖRHEAD Snaggletooth mural on the Harrow Road in Paddington, London.

To get a taste of Ian “Lemmy” Kilmister, “Fast” Eddie Clarke and Phil “Philthy Animal” Taylor in full flight in 1979, you can watch classic archive footage of the band performing both singles on Top Of The Pops from that year.

2019 marks the 40th anniversary of both the Overkill and Bomber albums, with this special release including both the lead singles from those albums. The celebrations will continue too, with more exciting, louder and heavier announcements to come later this year. Be sure to visitwww.iMotorhead.com for news and updates all year long!

Klezmer meets jazz, trip/hip hop & neo-soul for Sariyah Idan’s “You Got To Go”

0

Trip hop, soul, jazz, world, folk and hip hop fusion artist Sariyah Idan has successfully called upon her ancestral roots to weave traditional klezmer music into her latest single, “YOU GOT TO GO” — available now.

“Musically, it’s an arrival for me,” she shares. “It’s the first song I’ve recorded that authentically brings together a jazzy, hip hop groove with klezmer horns in the way I’ve been envisioning for a while.”

The lyrics on “YOU GOT TO GO” swirl strong around themes of human relationships tarnished by the demands of capitalism, and how the practice often corrupts integrity — even if unintentionally. It falls in line with Idan’s passionate talking points for her forthcoming LP itself: patriarchy, power and love.

“It’s my quiet roar of frustration,” says Idan. “That feeling of being manipulated… The holistic hippie culture I was raised in being appropriated for the benefit of wealthy people displacing poorer communities through gentrification…”

The track was crafted between Idan’s multitude of home bases — Los Angeles, New York, and Berlin. It was within this dynamic spread of location and sound that the artist could fully encapsulate her vision; incorporating klezmer sounds as a nod to her eastern European Jewish roots has long been a critical goal and artistic pull for Idan. “The Black American music canon is how I’m most trained and heavily influenced,” she shares, “and bringing together both traditions has been a mission and logistical struggle. The communities rarely interact, and traditional klezmer players are hard to find in Los Angeles.

“There’s an openness to trying new things in Berlin. There’s a growing interest in live band hip hop and a revival of klezmer music. When I started spending more time in Germany, it seemed perfect to record this song there.”

Perfect was an understatement: “Sy Anon sings background, and says ‘it’s about the man’, but the irony is I wrote it in response to a woman… Noize Fabrik opened their recording studio doors to me with enthusiasm, and Andy Shlegel has been superb to work with as a mixing engineer. I met The SWAG band at their weekly hip hop jam and asked them to record. Chriz Key and Sugbear Narin brought new and delicious colours to my arrangement, and Christian Dawid from Klezmer Sessions Neukölln delighted my angsty Jewish melancholia with his lilting clarinet.”

“YOU GOT TO GO” is the second single available in advance of Idan’s LP, BREAKING SHADOWS — set for release later this year.

“It’s about a woman’s struggle living inside a toxic patriarchy, and about loving sensitive men dealing with their experiences of patriarchy,” she previews. “It’s about the power of love, and the love of power, and about the corruption of love in order to gain and maintain power.

“The music is a blend of both my influences and my ancestors,” she continues, hinting towards the album’s richly woven sonic tapestry and its expression of her multicultural urban identity and cultural activism. “It’s a blend of jazz-soul with a little hip hop vibe, a little Caribbean, Latin American vibe, and then, again, pulling from my ancestral eastern European Jewish roots.

“This song fell out of me one morning in a river of melancholia and questions,” she continues, speaking intimately on the LP’s first single, “DARKNESS.” “It’s a prayer to a higher power — a female consciousness — to guide me on my path as a sensitive human in a turbulent world.”

Having grown up touring as a singer and dancer in a world folk ensemble in New York, she honed her skills as a spoken word poet at The Nuyorican Poets Cafe, has been featured on Artson’s award winning 2018 album Brave Star, MC Dumi RIGHT’s Doing It The Right Way, and DJ Haj i Ji’s EP Reports of My Demise. Idan has shared the stage with legends and mentors Lee “Scratch” Perry, Pete Seeger and Yusef Lateef as well as recordings with Marcia Griffiths and Caron Wheeler on Vienna-based Dubblestandart’s album Woman In Dub.

Sariyah Idan has previously released an EP — Deeper Than Skin — and mixtape — Not Afraid. Her debut LP BREAKING SHADOWS is set for release in 2019.

Sebadoh Announce First Studio Album in 6 Years ‘Act Surprised’ out May 24

0

Today, indie-rock pioneers Sebadoh announced their first new studio album in more than six years Act Surprised will release on May 24th via Dangerbird Records. The band released the official video for the album’s first single “celebrate the void” and has also announced a full US tour. Act Surprised is now available for pre-save/pre-order and includes an instant download of “celebrate the void.”

“The first line of this song: ‘I get the feeling you don’t feel me’ is pretty good. It could be a line in an Ariana Grande song, I like it,” said Lou Barlow. “I followed it from there through some general complaints about a composite character in my life, someone I could never crack. Sometimes the walls are too high. If you think about it, the resistance was always there, even in the very beginning. What to do? Pick endlessly at the seams? Replay moments in my head looking for a way to explain it all? No, stop, there is no one answer and that’s OK…Celebrate the void.”

Act Surprised continues the soulful collaboration that’s defined the band since 1991’s Sebadoh III and 1994’s Bakesale. The new batch of songs reaffirms how vital the creative partnership is between members Barlow, Jason Loewenstein, and Bob D’Amico.

When Barlow recently moved back to his home state of Massachusetts following a series of personal changes, he pressed the restart button and, in time, felt the incentive to reach out to Jason and Bob again to reunite and start work on a new album. The trio convened and began recording in their original stomping grounds in western Massachusetts where they first formed back in 1988. Along with producer/sound engineer Justin Pizzoferatto, Sebadoh have delivered one of the best records of their career. Act Surprised is a 15-song collection that’s as dynamic and visceral as anything the band has ever committed to tape.

Lowenstein stated, “Of all the records we have made in our long career, this is definitely the most recent.”

Meet Chelsea Stewart, The Youngest JUNO Award Nomination in Reggae

0

“It’s a fusion of fresh Canadian and Jamaican reggae music,” Chelsea Stewart shares of the chart-topping release, Genesis. “It’s a collection of songs about the different phases of love, all with the ‘beginning’ and original reggae music in mind.”

Much like the tracks — including “Over You”, which hit #1 on three Canadian reggae charts — Stewart’s voice is like a cold glass of lemonade served crisp and sweet on a hot summer’s day. The multi-talented singer/songwriter is classically trained and deftly showcases a dynamic range within genres and styles, from classical to jazz to everything in between.

Stewart has won ReggaeXclusive Magazine’s Song of the Year, a Trailblazer Award, an Entertainment Award for the International Woman Achievers’ Award, and a Caribbean Entertainment and Music Award. She was the first Canadian female to perform at Rototom Sunsplash, the biggest reggae festival in Europe, in their 22 year history.

While songwriting since her early teens, on Genesis she welcomed the skills from someone close in her corner — her mom.

“I enjoy the creative process of songwriting with my mother,” Stewart shares of their unique partnership in this regard. “I’m pretty sure we are the only mother/daughter songwriting and production duo in reggae music — if not all music — in Canada right now!”

The pair’s synergy has proved to be a tour de force.

“This is a song about empowerment,” she explains about the aforementioned chart topping track, “Over You.” “It’s about recognizing that you are in a romantic situation that doesn’t serve you, and about mustering the courage to leave.

“It was a different and pleasant experience,” Steward adds about “Just Wanna Love You” — a track the pair worked with other songwriters on, including Canadian Renee Brown. “That writing collaboration turned out to be one of our favourites from the collection. Working with legendary music makers Sly and Robbie out of Jamaica — who’ve worked with great names like Mick Jagger, Sting, Grace Jones, and so many more — was humbling and exciting at the same time.”

“Perfectly Lonely” has been tucked in Stewart’s back pocket for some time. “I wrote this back in grade nine,” she recalls. “It’s my mom’s favourite song. It’s about having the patience to wait for your true love, and staying busy ‘doing you’ in the meantime.”

The last song may have been all Stewart’s penmanship, but the first on Genesis — “Do You Love Me” — was all her mom. “It was fun watching her create this song,” Stewart gushes. “We were in Jamaica and she was writing it and singing it while I was in the shower. Then, somewhere in the middle of it, I stuck my head out the door and added the ‘ohhhs” and we just started laughing together. It was funny… I think we knew we found a good song!”

Cliffs + Caves announce the release of their EP, Capsize, on all major streaming platforms on February 15, 2019. Partnering with producer Chris Jacobie (Penny and Sparrow, Jarrod Dickenson, Duncan Fellows), the duo has created a five song exploration of the musical ingenuity that is created when artistry runs in the family. Americana Highways exclusively premiered Capsize on February 13, 2019 saying, “Overall the songs will hit you emotionally and the EP creates a sense of suspense at those things in life that are often unresolved.”

Cliffs + Caves, the mother-daughter duo of Lindsey and Claire Justice, unabashedly share their deeply personal and relatable stories through songs that resonate with listeners of all generations. Best known in their home state of Texas for their unique blend of indie-folk music, the pair are delivering their best record yet with the release of their highly anticipated EP, Capsize. The original songs are a team effort with Lindsey creating most of the lyrics and melodies while Claire, a multi-instrumentalist, composed the music for the tracks. Undoubtedly their most dynamic release to date, Capsize reveals the depths of their skills as songwriters and instrumentalists with intimate lyrics lilting intrinsically over smooth musical progressions.

My Next Read – Serving the Servant: Remembering Kurt Cobain

0

On the twenty-fifth anniversary of Kurt Cobain’s death comes a new perspective on one of the most compelling icons of our time—and the only book written by someone who knew him – Danny Goldberg, and his new book, Serving the Servant: Remembering Kurt Cobain.

In early 1991, top music manager Danny Goldberg agreed to take on Nirvana, a critically acclaimed new band from the underground music scene in Seattle. He had no idea that the band’s leader, Kurt Cobain, would become a pop-culture icon with a legacy arguably at the level of that of John Lennon, Michael Jackson, or Elvis Presley. Danny worked with Kurt from 1990 to 1994, the most impactful period of Kurt’s life. This key time saw the stratospheric success of Nevermind, which turned Nirvana into the most successful rock band in the world and made punk and grunge household terms; Kurt’s meeting and marriage to the brilliant but mercurial Courtney Love and their relationship that became a lightning rod for critics; the birth of their daughter, Frances Bean; and, finally, Kurt’s public struggles with addiction, which ended in a devastating suicide that would alter the course of rock history. Throughout, Danny stood by Kurt’s side as manager, and close friend.

Drawing on Goldberg’s own memories of Kurt, files that previously have not been made public, and interviews with, among others, Kurt’s close family, friends, and former bandmates, Serving the Servants sheds an entirely new light on these critical years. Casting aside the common obsession with the angst and depression that seemingly drove Kurt, Serving the Servants is an exploration of his brilliance in every aspect of rock and roll, his compassion, his ambition, and the legacy he wrought—one that has lasted decades longer than his career did. Danny Goldberg explores what it is about Kurt Cobain that still resonates today, even with a generation who wasn’t alive until after Kurt’s death. In the process, he provides a portrait of an icon unlike any that has come before.
