International Powerhouse, Matt Andersen, Announces North American Tour And Video For “Something To Lose” Featuring Amy Helm

0

Award-winning Canadian soul-bluesman Matt Andersen, announces an international tour, spanning across the US, UK, Europe and Canada, which will support his upcoming album release, Halfway Home by Morning (available worldwide March 22, 2019 on True North Records). The 13-song album (recorded in Nashville, TN) deftly captures the New Brunswick-native’s long signature and internationally celebrated sound: sweat-soaked soul meets incendiary rhythm and blues, with full doses of heartsick folk and Americana grit mixed in for good measure.

Halfway Home by Morning will include a slew of pre-released singles, including “Free Man” and “Quarter On The Ground,” which have garnered 120,000+ streams on Spotify alone and numerous radio adds for “Free Man.” The most recent singles, “Something To Lose,” (featuring Grammy Award-winning recording artist, Amy Helm) and “Better Than You Want,” were released Friday, February 15.

“Amy and I have been trying for a long time for the opportunity to write together. We ended being on a tour together and found ourselves with a day off and sat down to tackle a tune. A session with my pal Ian Janes completed the song. It ended up being the last song we recorded for the album and it was definitely one of the highlights of my time in the studio. I’ll sing with Amy any time I can. She’s the real thing and always brings her own genuine and infectious joy into the room and into any song,” Andersen
says.

To accompany “Something To Lose,” Andersen has released a studio video with Amy Helm. Watch it below.

“For the video, we had an easy and relaxed day at the Henhouse Studio in Nashville with my producer, Steve Dawson, and the band,” Andersen says of the video. “I could have sang this song all day. I really like the stripped down vibe we had on these takes. Being able to sit across from and just sing into the open air with no headphones or monitors was as real as it gets. I love that we caught that moment,” Andersen says.

With over 18 million views on YouTube and nearly two decades into his storied career, Andersen’s room-shaking, heart-quaking voice has won him countless awards, including two European Blues Awards, seven Maple Blues Awards, an International Blues Challenge and a JUNO Award nomination.

With a staggering voice that is at intervals vulnerable and mighty, Andersen sings of love, loss, longing for home, and finding out about “the nails that hung (his) heroes to their crosses.” The songs are honest; they reflect the musings of a blue-collar kid trying to make sense of the wider world as he rolls through another town in an endless stretch of nightly gigs. His dedication to the road earned him the unique CIMA Road Gold certification.

Andersen is is a singer of Herculean talent, a songwriter who isn’t afraid of introspection, and a guitarist with “the confidence of a fighter in his prime.” All of those facets of his artistry are on full display in his newest offering Halfway Home by Morning.

How to Hire a Great Wedding DJ

0

Getting married is a big deal.  When you have found the right partner, you are assuming you will only get one chance at having the perfect wedding.  One of the most important aspects of the wedding reception is the entertainment.  This is why it is important to find the right disk jockey to play and emcee on your special day.  Unless you or your partner knows a good bit about the local music scene, it is likely that you won’t have much knowledge about local DJs who work weddings. The following are some general tips to ensure that you hire a great wedding DJ.

Create a List of Local DJs

The first step is to create a master list of all the prospective DJs to choose from in your local area. For example, if you live in Kelowna, you’ll want to Google wedding DJs in Kelowna.

From there, your next step is to move on to word-of-mouth referrals.  These can come from family, friends or the people you already hired to work your wedding.  Always give extra weight to the opinions of wedding vendors, especially if they regularly work events at the location of your reception. They will have seen some of the DJs in action and can tell you who puts on a good show.

Another way to help create your list is to look into local awards to find any award-winning DJs.  This can ensure you not only have good music but a show-stopping performance at your wedding.

Pro tip: Don’t simply go for the DJs listed in a glossy book at the wedding planners. These are basically ads and may not have worthwhile options.

Check Out the DJ’s Website

Most professional wedding DJs worth considering should have some type of a website.  Their site should have two important bits of information: a brief description of their style and some sort of pricing guide.

Any DJ you are considering hiring should have these two items on their website or at least be able to give you an example of them working.  If a DJ doesn’t list a price, be prepared to be charged top dollar and have them try to sell themselves to you.

Most DJs will also have some way to check their availability on their website.  Check their website or call them to make sure they are free on the days of your wedding.  Once you have contacted them, pay attention to how long it takes to get a reply.  If they are already booked or they don’t respond in a timely manner, then you can remove them from your list.

Interview Candidates

Once you have narrowed your initial list down, begin interviewing prospective candidates.  Ask how long they have worked weddings or how they handle requests.  Find out if this is their full-time job. The interview is also an opportunity to get on the same page with the DJ, so you can ensure they can help to create a memorable experience that fulfills your desires.

You can also use the interview to see their communication skills. This is important since they will be interacting with guests and taking requests during the wedding.  You also need to address what will happen in case of an emergency and the DJ can’t be there.  The last thing you want is to scramble to replace the entertainment at the last moment.

Hiring a DJ to entertain your guests on your special day is one of the most important tasks when planning your wedding.  Making sure you get the right person for the job is a decision you will only make once, so it is important to get it right the first time.

Norman Blake Of Teenage Fanclub Gives The Best Band Advice

0

It was a very unsettling time for a lot of bands, particularly some of those on Creation whose roster changed dramatically almost overnight. Did you ever think Teenage Fanclub were in danger of being dropped by the label?

We were never concerned because we really didn’t have any expectations. If you have expectations then the pressure builds if you can’t live up to them. We hoped people would buy our records and come to the shows but if they didn’t you go and do something else. You have to be realistic. Fortunately, people did buy our albums and come to the shows but if they hadn’t, we’d have been OK with that. It’s just the way it goes. You hear bands complaining they weren’t successful because this didn’t happen or that didn’t happen but at the end of the day it’s just circumstance. You can’t expect to be famous or successful or you’ll just end up being desperate, which will then affect the music you’re making. Whereas if you just stay cool, do what you want to do and make music that you’re happy with at least you won’t be disappointed when you listen to it years later. There’s nothing worse than compromising and making an album that’s not really you then still isn’t successful.

What advice would you give to a new band just starting out now?

The band’s always right. It’s alright getting producers in and asking their advice, but the band knows their sound best – they’re the ones creating the music. If you want to have a song with two choruses and three verses followed by a middle eight and two verses again, do it! Don’t have somebody tell you it’s too long, or you need another middle eight. Fuck off! Write your own fucking songs. Just be confident in the music you’re making and what you’re doing and you’ll be alright. You may not be successful but that doesn’t matter. At least you’ll be creative on your own terms.
