THE GOOD, THE BAD & THE QUEEN Announces New Album: MERRIE LAND Out November 16

0

November 16 sees the release of Merrie Land, the second album from The Good, The Bad & The Queen, a band comprised of Damon Albarn, Paul Simonon, Tony Allen and Simon Tong.

Following an eleven-year hiatus since their eponymous debut, the four musical storytellers are back with Merrie Land, which will be self-released on the newly created label Studio 13. Produced by Tony Visconti and The Good, The Bad & The Queen, Merrie Land contains 10 new songs – written during the current period in which the UK is preparing to leave the European Union – creating a reluctant good- bye letter, a series of observations and reflections on Britishness in 2018. Merrie Land’s focus moves beyond GBQ’s London-themed first album to a wider land, with a beautiful and hopeful paean to the Britain of today, an inclusive Britain, currently in an Anglo-Saxostentialist crises at the end of a relationship, wondering what might be salvaged. Could there be a more perfect band – with their creative symbiosis of pasts and present and shared acclaimed music histories – to reflect on the anticipation, disorientation and confusion of current life.

The Good, The Bad & The Queen began life as the acclaimed 2007 album of the same name, a heartfelt tribute to London described by The Observer in a 5-star review as –“One of the most surprising and magical records for which Damon Albarn has ever been responsible”. The record traced a journey from the English music hall tradition to West Africa and Afrobeat, zigzagging through the West Indies and its reggae and dub, back to England and London’s punk scene, all the while taking in a strand of British beat music from the ’50s right through to Britpop. The result was a record specific to a place and mood but with a background that was geographically wide-ranging.

The full track listing for Merrie Land is:
– Merrie Land
– Gun to the Head
– Nineteen Seventeen
– The Great Fire
– Lady Boston
– Drifters & Trawlers
– The Truce of Twilight
– Ribbons
– The Last Man to Leave
– The Poison Tree

December sees the band set out on tour for a run of UK shows, performing this collection of new songs live, for the very first time, in Blackpool, Glasgow and East London. Tickets go on sale this Friday 23rd October at 9am.
Full dates below:
Dec 1st – The North Pier, Blackpool
Dec 2nd – SWG3, Glasgow

Young The Giant Announce “Mirror Master Tour” In 2019

0

Today, Young the Giant announce dates for their 2019 Mirror Master Tour in support of the new full-length album of the same name, released earlier this month via Elektra Records. Mirror Master includes recently released tracks “Simplify” and “Call Me Back”, along with the musing single “Superposition”. In addition to the newly announced show dates, the band is currently touring this fall across the US with LIGHTS as main support.

Tickets for the Mirror Master Tour will go on sale to the public Friday, October 26 at 10am local time.

Recently, Young the Giant delivered “soaring” (Billboard) performances of “Superposition” and “Simplify” on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, and also appeared on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert this summer with a powerful rendition of “Simplify”.

https://youtu.be/Fjw2n8-jpL0

https://youtu.be/X8yCT19yRJM

Describing the overall thesis for Mirror Master, vocalist Sameer Gadhia explains, “Within one single day, we’re all so many different people. Especially with the use of social media, we’re not just living in the now—we’re living on several different timelines simultaneously. A lot of the album came from thinking about how we have all these separations within ourselves that allow us to go about our day. At a time when everyone wants to put each other in a box—culturally, socially, musically—we wanted to show that there are a multitude of reflections inside everything. We don’t have to be a certain thing; we can contradict ourselves and show all these different sides of who we are.”

Since the band’s 2010 inception, Young the Giant has made a name for itself in rock as the ‘thinking man’s band,’ winning over fans, radio, and press with their incendiary live shows, strong musicianship, and poignant lyrics. Following 2016’s critically-acclaimed Home of the Strange, Mirror Master promises to continue ascending into consciousness, though this time with a heavy focus on personal self-awareness and growth.

Mirror Master finds Young the Giant in a transitional period for America, not only as a culture (for their former album Home of the Strange, NPR’s Alisa Chang had an in-depth conversation with Gadhia about the ‘modern immigration story’, available to read here), but also technologically. The band members have become increasingly aware of society’s attachment to social media, cellphones, and elevated, sometimes fabricated, self-portrayals on the internet.

With the new album, the band forgoes the technological obsession and, in an almost meditative way, examines one’s relationship with the “self” to instead express a genuine identity.

“Something we want to get across with the album is the idea of taking authorship of your life,” continues Gadhia. “Even though it may all be an illusion, there’s solace in that illusion. Because if you have control of anything at all, it’s your own reflection, how you treat people and how you walk through this life. So if you’re an Indian kid and your parents want you to be a doctor or lawyer or engineer, and you just want to make music with your friends, then do that. Don’t let people feed you what they want you to think. Do what makes you happy, and realize and that all is good and all is horrible, and everything else in between.”

Young the Giant is composed of Gadhia (vocals), Jacob Tilley (guitar), Eric Cannata (guitar/vocals), Payam Doostzadeh (bass), and Francois Comtois (drums/vocals).

Mark Knopfler Sets North American Tour Dates

0

In celebration of his upcoming ninth solo studio album, Down The Road Wherever (out November 16 on British Grove Records via Blue Note), Mark Knopfler is set for a 28-date North American tour kicking off on August 16, 2019 at the Foxwoods Resort Casino in Mashantucket, CT. See below for a complete list of dates.

On tour Knopfler will perform with an expanded ten-piece band, most of whom have been working with him for more than two decades: Guy Fletcher (keyboards), Richard Bennett (guitar), Jim Cox (piano), Mike McGoldrick (whistle and flute), John McCusker (fiddle and cittern), Glenn Worf (bass), Danny Cummings (percussion) and Ian Thomas (drums). New additions include Graeme Blevins (saxophone) and Tom Walsh (trumpet).‘My songs are made to be performed live,’ notes Knopfler. ‘I love the whole process of writing them alone and then recording them with the band, but ultimately the best part is playing them to an audience live. I enjoy the whole circus, travelling from town to town and interacting with this group of players is a total pleasure. I’m really looking forward to it.’

Down The Road Wherever — recorded by Knopfler in his West London studio, British Grove — features 14 new songs inspired by a wide range of subjects, including Knopfler’s early days in Deptford with Dire Straits, a stray soccer fan lost in a strange town, the compulsion of a musician hitching home through the snow and a man out of time in his local greasy spoon diner.

Knopfler explains, ‘Down The Road Wherever’ is a line from [album track] ‘One Song At A Time.’ I remember my pal Chet Atkins once saying that he picked his way out of poverty ‘one song at a time,’ and it just stuck in my mind. You get to an age where you’ve written quite a few songs. But Down The Road Wherever seems to be appropriate for me just because it’s what I’ve always done. I’ve always tried to make a record and also to keep my own geography happening in the songs.’

Knopfler has previously released eight solo albums, as well as Neck And Neck with guitar great Chet Atkins and All The Roadrunning with Emmylou Harris. He has also created film soundtracks for Local Hero, The Princess Bride and Cal. In addition to producing his own records, Knopfler has also produced albums for Bob Dylan and Randy Newman, amongst others. Knopfler was made an Order of the British Empire in 1999 and was given the prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award at the Ivor Novellos in 2012.

Down The Road Wherever will be available via digital download, CD, double vinyl, deluxe CD with three bonus tracks and a lavish box set that will include the album on both vinyl and deluxe CD and an additional 12” vinyl EP with 4 bonus tracks, a 12” print of the artwork and a 12” guitar tablature of ‘Back On The Dance Floor.’
