Arts & Crafts and Massey Hall Announce Live at Massey Hall Vinyl Release Series

0

“It’s the Tower of Song of which Leonard Cohen once sang. It’s the temple of music, the Grand Old Lady of Shuter Street, almost as old as the country itself…”

With these liner notes, celebrated author Michael Barclay entrenches the enormous musical history of Toronto’s Massey Hall. His words set the stage for a monumental new vinyl release series that captures the fascinating evolution of the venerated concert venue, a room that has housed timeless performances by everyone from Joni Mitchell to Glenn Gould since opening its doors in 1894.

Arts & Crafts, in collaboration with Massey Hall, announces the first edition in a collection of live compilations from the Live at Massey Hall concert film series, a new platform specially designed to spotlight Canada’s modern day frontier of music legends. Since its launch in 2014, Live at Massey Hall has created a space for emerging talent to flourish in its age-old hall. Now, the music of Live at Massey Hall is captured on record for the first time in a beautiful vinyl package exclusively for Record Store Day Black Friday, available in participating independent record stores across North America on November 23.
Live at Massey Hall Vol 1 plays through with incredible emotional range, from the solitary intimacy of folk-inspired poets to the electric cacophony of basement-born rock bands. In each recording, the inimitable Hall and its audience play a palpable, vital role, reconciling these landmark nights in each artist’s career.

The record opens with Destroyer alone onstage with his acoustic guitar and elegant poetry, every nuance of his voice and strings filling the silence of the hall. Constantines taps into its punk rock gospel essence with spine-tingling call-and-response. Hayden channels the pulse of the city he came up in, invoking his early days as a performer and a phone call from Massey Hall hero Neil Young. Dan Mangan + Blacksmith stretches the experimental boundaries of against-the-grain folk, while Emily Haines & The Soft Skeleton counter the stadium pop of her band Metric with her own deeper narratives.

Side two opens with the masterfully crafted storytelling of Regina, Saskatchewan’s Andy Shauf, followed by the palpable excitement of francophone Québecois artist Cœur de pirate’s incredible ascension to a sold-out Massey Hall. Bahamas delivers a pin-drop performance of precise songcraft and gorgeous restraint. Japandroids literally bring the house down with the aptly titled “The House That Heaven Built,” before Whitehorse drops the curtain with the heartstopping and serene “Die Alone.”

With the release of Live at Massey Hall Vol 1, Arts & Crafts announces that $1 from every sale of this series will be donated to Massey Hall to support the Massey Hall Revitalization. An historic, refurbishment, restoration, and addition set to enhance Massey Hall by 2020, supporting patron and artist accessibility, restoration of key structures in the National Historic Site, and significant investment in artist development and community outreach.

LIVE AT MASSEY HALL VOL 1 TRACKLIST:

Taking Back Sunday Celebrate Their 20th Anniversary With A Year-Long Worldwide Tour

0

Craft Recordings is excited to announce a special collaboration with Taking Back Sunday, in celebration of the band’s 20th anniversary. As part of this year-long fête, the band will be embarking on an extensive worldwide tour, paying tribute to their catalog – and their fans – with full album performances. In conjunction, Craft will be releasing a special career (to date)-spanning compilation titled Twenty. The 21-song collection is set for release on January 11, 2019, and will span all seven of their full-length albums, in addition to a couple of surprises.

Stay tuned for the full track listing and format details, to be revealed very soon. The pre-order for Twenty will launch October 30, 2019.

“It feels strange to say out loud… 2019 marks 20 years since I joined Taking Back Sunday and my life changed forever,” remarks singer Adam Lazzara. “So, next year we will be traveling the world to celebrate the amazing brotherhood, musicand life we have created together over the past 20 years. We hope you can join us for what is sure to be an experience to remember.”

The first leg of the worldwide tour is being announced today and includes dates in Australia, Asia, a portion of North America and South America. At all shows, Taking Back Sunday will be performing their debut album Tell All Your Friends in its entirety. For tour stops where the band are performing over two-nights, each nightly set will offer a double-album play – using a specially designed coin, Taking Back Sunday will flip to play either Where You Want To Be or Louder Now in addition to Tell All Your Friends. In headline cities where they are playing only one night, they will perform Tell All Your Friends, plus a selection of fan favorites from their extensive catalog. With more dates and special releases in the works, 2019 should be a fun-filled year of shows around the globe.

If you can’t believe that Taking Back Sunday have been around for 20 years, you’re not alone, because they can’t either. Although the pride of Long Islandhave had a handful of member changes over the years, the current lineup of the band – vocalist Adam Lazzara, guitarist John Nolan, drummer Mark O’Connell and bassist Shaun Cooper – have all been there since the beginning. From the band’s landmark 2002 debut Tell All Your Friends to their most recent full-length, 2016’s Tidal Wave, Taking Back Sunday have evolved from a key player in the early 2000s emo scene to a genre-defying rock band who have three gold albums without ever ceasing to push the limitations of their sound. This fact is evidenced on Twenty.

Twenty is a celebration not only of those career-defining moments but of the landmark albums that chronicle the band’s story: 2002’s Tell All Your Friends, 2004’s Where You Want To Be, 2006’s Louder Now, 2009’s New Again, 2011’s Taking Back Sunday, 2014’s Happiness Is and 2016’s Tidal Wave, all of which are represented on this collection. Whether your introduction to the band was singing along to “A Decade Under The Influence” in a sweaty club or hearing “MakeDamnSure” or “Sink Into Me” on the radio, Twenty is a look back at some of the highlights from this unlikely group of musical misfits. Additionally, fans will be able to hear newly recorded songs which hint at the direction that Taking Back Sunday are heading in the coming years. Musical legacy aside, ultimately what’s most impressive is the fact that after two decades and countless successes, Taking Back Sunday have managed to preserve that initial spark that excited them as teenagers.

Following an introduction by Richard Pryor we see Gil, Brian and the band perform Johannesburg followed by a quick sketch by Richard then back to the band performing A Lovely Day.

Def Leppard, John Prine, Stevie Nicks, The Cure Among Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame Nominees

0

Early Tuesday (Oct. 9) morning, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame announced the nominees for induction into the 2019 Rock Hall class. Def Leppard, Devo, Janet Jackson, John Prine, Kraftwerk, LL Cool J, MC5, Radiohead, Rage Against the Machine, Roxy Music, Stevie Nicks, the Cure, Todd Rundgren, Rufus & Chaka Kahn and the Zombies are all potentially up for induction at the March 29, 2019, ceremony in Brooklyn, NY, at Barclays Center.

This group of nominees finds us looking at more than a few familiar faces, as nine of the 15 artists have been nominated before. Hip-hop megastar LL Cool J and electronic pioneers Kraftwerk have been nominated four times before each, and influential U.K. rockers the Zombies have seen three previous nominations.

First-timers include hard rock hitmakers Def Leppard, the solo work of Fleetwood Mac’s Stevie Nicks, new wavers Devo, art-rockers Roxy Music, folk hero John Prine and genre-hopping iconoclast Todd Rundgren.

Bob Geldof, Sting, Ed Sheeran, Damon Albarn, Brian Eno, Jarvis Cocker, And More Write Letter To Thrwart Brexit

0

Bob Geldof has called on musicians to thwart Brexit, calling the UK leaving the EU “a serious madness”. Among those to sign the letter are Ed Sheeran, Damon Albarn, Simon Rattle, Brian Eno, Jarvis Cocker, Rita Ora and Sting. In it, they warn that Brexit threatens to place the UK in “a self-built cultural jail”, making it really difficult for artists and the music industry to continue to make British music the “huge global cultural influencer” that it currently is.

And you can read Geldof’s full letter below.

To Theresa May:
Imagine Britain without its music. If it’s hard for us, then it’s impossible for the rest of the world. In this one area, if nowhere else, Britain does still rule the waves. The airwaves. The cyberwaves. The soundwaves. It is of us. It is our culture.
We dominate the market and our bands, singers, musicians, writers, producers and engineers work all over Europe and the world. In turn, Europe and the world come to us. Why? Because we are brilliant at it. No one quite knows why this should be but everyone understands it to be so. The sound and the words seem universal. It reaches out, all inclusive, and embraces anyone and everyone. And that truly is what Britain IS! That is proper Global Britain.
But Brexit threatens, as it does so much else, this vast voice. This huge global cultural influencer. We are about to make a very serious mistake regarding our giant industry and the vast pool of yet undiscovered genius that lives on this little island.
Why are we closing down these possibilities for ourselves and for those as yet unknown to us? Brexit will impact every aspect of the music industry. From touring, sales, copyright legislation, to royalty collation. Indeed it already has. As a result of the referendum vote, the fall in the pound has meant hugely increased equipment costs, studio hire, and touring costs all now materially higher than before – and not forgetting that squeezed household incomes means less money to go to clubs and buy tracks, T-shirts, gigs and generate the vast income necessary to keep the up and comers on the road and musically viable.
A massive 60% of all royalty revenue paid to the UK comes from within the EU. And at home, ANY increase in import duty will mean that ANYTHING that comes to us from outside will cost significantly more. We have decided to put ourselves inside a self-built cultural jail! The very opposite of wall-destroying, prejudice-denying, ideas-generating that is the very essence of contemporary music. And yet it is the much-mocked freedom of movement that so effortlessly allows our troubadours, our cultural warriors, to wander Europe and speak of us to a world that cannot get enough of [them], and which generates countless billions for our threatened institutions.
This is all a serious madness. We must take back our future. We must reform and restructure the EU. When Europe is in a mess, the Brits get stuck in. They don’t withdraw, they double down. They get in close and messy. Make Europe the continent that we and the people of Europe want. Not the one dreamt up in another time by the ideologues, or by the undemocratic fiat of mediocre politicians or the dull exhortations of a pallid bureaucracy. A new one. A different one. An exciting one. A rock n roll one.
Let’s rock Europe and let’s save our music, our musicians, our music jobs and our songs. Let’s save our voice.
Yours, Bob Geldof and friends.

Update: Five of Seven Guitars Owned By 54-40 Have Been Recovered

0

West Coast rock band 54-40 are pleased to announce the safe return of their most cherished guitars.

The New Westminster Police has located five of the vintage guitars belonging to the band 54-40 after executing a search warrant in Surrey, BC.

On Friday October 5th 2018 the New Westminster Police received a report of a theft from a U-Haul that was parked in a lot in the 300 block of McBride Blvd. Items taken included seven vintage guitars belonging to the Canadian band 54-40, and were valued at approximately $50,000.

On Sunday October 7th 2018, NWPD investigators executed a search warrant and located five of the seven stolen guitars, along with other electronic equipment.

“The investigation is on-going, and NWPD officers continue to work toward identifying and arresting a suspect,” stated media relations officer Sergeant Jeff Scott. “This was a significant theft and we are hopeful that we will be able to recover the other two guitars. We will continue to follow-up with any leads as they come in.”

Anyone with information is asked to call the NWPD at 604-525-5411, and quote file number 18-19100.
“The five guitars recovered are the most unique of the seven taken. We are grateful for their return and for the efforts of so many people. The community really came together on this. The word got out fast and the heat was on,” 54-40 Manager Allen Moy stated.

54-40 want to thank their fans, friends, the news media, and concerned people for their overwhelming response and assistance. The band would also like to thank the New Westminster Police department for their excellent detective work.
