Kelsi Mayne: “I might fit your description, honey, but I ain’t your Jolene.”

0

Kelsi Mayne, from the start, always had a knack for writing fist-clenthing anthems that is quickly turning her into potentially 2019’s country music’s next Canadian star. It’s so surprise that her fans are keeping the lyric sheets close to their hearts for her songs. She’s smart, damn funny, and reduces even the sharpest of words into memorable thoughts. As she says on her Instagram bio, “I might fit your description, honey, but I ain’t your Jolene.” Classic.

She will be performing at the Canadian Sports Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony on October 18, and making the rounds for an Ontario radio tour in October for “Woman Waiting”, and she is also playing Indie Week on November 7 at Cameron House at 9:30pm.

Interview: Assassination Nation stars Suki Waterhouse & Hari Nef

0

By: W. Andrew Powell, The GATE

Assassination Nation is an over-the-top social commentary wrapped up in a horror movie and a thriller, and it’s really going to get people talking this weekend when it opens in theatres.

During the 2018 Toronto International Film Festival, writer and director Sam Levinson, and three of the stars of the film, sat down with me to talk about making the movie, and their thoughts about the characters and their ordeals. The movie revisits the Salem witch trials, in a way, and how they could play out today in our internet obsessed culture, and it’s both frightening, realistic, and empowering, all at the same time.

“We were literally having the best time ever at boarding school,” Suki Waterhouse joked about making the film.

“I wasn’t thinking about the tough parts of this movie while we were filming the other parts,” Hari Nef said about the process. “I wanted to fully enjoy the fun parts and the silly parts, and those juicy high school parts. And then, much like in real life, when the violent parts show up, it’s like ‘Oh, shoot,’ and you deal with it then.”

Speaking about the characters, Nef said, “I think the way that it’s sketched out, the four central characters, ultimately there’s this focus on them as victims of an incredibly violent environment, but I also really think it’s essential that we get to see them talk their own shit, and have their own prejudices about the people in their community.”

“I kind of saw myself in these girls. I mean, we are these girls,” Waterhouse added. “We’re messy, we mess up, and we’re up against a ton of shit.”

At the same time, Assassination Nation features a dark but often upbeat tone. “I think it’s that mix of high optimism and total nihilism that sort of defines our generation,” Nef said. “I think the girls kind of represent that.”

And what about a sequel? Well, you’ll have to watch the interview to find out what they had to say about that.

Assassination Nation is out now in theatres.

Dave Grohl to Auction His Gear in Special “PLAY” Charity Auction on Reverb

0

On the heels of the release of PLAY, Dave Grohl’s unprecedented immersive musical project, Reverb have partnered with the legendary musician for a very special gear auction.

Starting Tuesday, October 9, fans can bid on brand-new pieces of the gear that Grohl used to make PLAY, donated by DW Drums, Fender, Gibson, Gretsch, Ludwig, Made By Maple, and Zildjian—and signed by the musician himself. Being that PLAY is Grohl’s mini-documentary celebrating the rewards and challenges of dedicating one’s life to mastering a musical instrument, it’s only fitting that the proceeds from this auction will be going to benefit organizations that help young generations of new musicians “just play.”

“Seeing my own kids start to play music and take lessons brings me back to the time when I was their age, chipping away at it and learning from my mistakes. Even now, as a 49-year-old man, I’m still trying to figure it out,” Grohl told us, sharing his inspiration for the auction.

“It’s not something that you ever truly master. You’re always chasing the next challenge, and you’re always trying to find a way to improve what you’ve learned. It’s a lifelong obsession, but at the end of the day—just like any kid—the reward is just to play.”

The auction will run from Tuesday, October 9, through Sunday evening, October 21, so be sure to mark your calendars.

Kingston’s The Wilderness Release New Video For “Dancing in the Dive Bars”

0

Hailing from all corners of the globe, The Wilderness was formed in 2015 after a chance encounter between the original members at an open mic in Kingston. After just a single practice together, Jonas Lewis-Anthony, Karl Tombak, Sacha Lansky, Henry Lawrence, and Scott Goodwin began seeking out and playing shows in Kingston. Later that year they recorded their debut EP “Sunday Afternoon,” and that Fall hit the road for the first time, playing shows all over both the US and Canada.

In 2018, the group once again grew with the addition of Nicolas Lennox on the Saxophone. In late February of 2018 the band ventured out on tour once again. This time their travels took them far into Northern Ontario, where they very closely avoided crisis multiple times to make it safely back to Kingston. Along the way they were joined by French filmmakers Celine Klein and Lucile Memin, who filmed the entire tour for a documentary to be released later in 2018.

The group has just released their Dancing in the Dive Bars and it’s a mighty tune! Dancing in the Dive Bars tells a story of the joy that can be found in life’s struggles. The band writes, “Sometimes the world throws challenges at you that may seem insurmountable. The end of the month arrives, and the $33.65 in your bank account won’t cover the rent. But you still have your friends, and you still have your favourite local bar. And together you all traipse out to the town, and dance away your issues till tomorrow.”

Clean Bandit Announce Their New Album ‘What Is Love?’ Confirmed For Release On November 30

0

Clean Bandit are delighted to announce details of their second studio album ‘What Is Love?’, confirmed for release on 30th November 2018. The LP is available to preorder now.

What Is Love?’ is the fruit of the past three years’ work and an exciting new chapter for Clean Bandit. The follow-up to the band’s two million-selling and UK Top 3 debut, ‘New Eyes’, released in 2014, ‘What Is Love?’ is a home to Clean Bandit’s inventive, eclectic multi-genre catalogue – a collection of gigantic upbeat megabops married with emotive lyricism. A band that thrive on being a true collaborative endeavour, Clean Bandit command yet another brilliantly extensive list of blockbuster vocalists this time around: Zara Larsson, Marina, Luis Fonsi, Demi Lovato, Sean Paul, Anne-Marie, Ellie Goulding, KYLE, Big Boi, Tove Styrke, Stefflon Don, Craig David, Kirsten Joy, Rita Ora, Julia Michaels and ALMA. The deluxe edition will feature Yasmin Green, Charli XCX, Bhad Bhabie, DaVido, Love Ssega and Louisa Johnson.

The album – underpinned by the band’ hit singles “Rockabye” feat. Anne-Marie and Sean Paul, “Symphony” feat. Zara Larsson, “I Miss You” feat. Julia Michaels, “Tears” feat. Louisa Johnson and “Solo” feat. Demi Lovato – was recorded across the globe and has been produced by the trio’s long-standing producer, Mark Ralph (Years & Years), alongside Clean Bandit’s very own, 2 x Ivor Novello-winning, Jack Patterson, and Grace Chatto.

The band’s cellist, Grace, commented – “The album looks at many different kinds and stages of love. We’ve been making it over three years, during which time we’ve all experiences love in our lives in different ways and, some of us, heartbreak too. Somehow this is all expressed in the music: brotherly love; family love; romantic love; crazy all-consuming love; the pain of love turning into something different or dishonest; and, of course, in ‘Rockabye’, unconditional motherly love. It explores the sacrifices we all go through for love and for each other, even when it is difficult. It’s been such an honour to write and record with all of the amazing singers and musicians involved in the record. We made the songs all over the world, mainly in North London and LA – some lines were even recorded in a bathroom in Uganda! We really hope that everyone will find tracks on this album to identify with and we can’t wait to share it with you.”

Breaking through to the mainstream in 2014 with their mammoth 12 million-selling and GRAMMY-winning single “Rather Be”, the pioneering 6 x BRIT-nominated trio have paved the way in the global pop scene with their matchless blend of classical, electronica, pop, dancehall and R&B, proving themselves as a force to be reckoned with in the charts across the globe. One of the most successful and in-demand collectives of the century, Clean Bandit have sold over 40 million singles worldwide and accumulated over 10 billion streams and 3.5 billion YouTube views to date! Not to mention their cutting-edge self-directed official music videos that have further propelled the band as an unparalleled creative force. In their native UK, “Solo” feat. Demi Lovato [the band’s latest single] not only marked Clean Bandit’s fourth UK No.1, but their ninth UK Top 5 and seventh consecutive UK Top 5 that saw them land the most consecutive Top 5 records, from any artist, since Girls Aloud in 2005 and the same amount of UK No.1’s as Justin Timberlake, One Direction and Lady Gaga. The trio’s 2016 UK Christmas No.1 “Rockabye” continues to hold the record as the longest-running UK No.1 in 24 years for a UK band, surpassing Wet Wet Wet’s “Love Is All Around”.

Michael Bublé Releases New Album love ❤️ On November 16

0

Michael Bublé is scheduled to release ❤️ (pronounced love) as his first studio album in two years on November 16th following a two year break from public life to spend time with his family. The announcement was officially confirmed by Reprise Records who will be releasing the multi-Grammy and JUNO Award winning artist’s 8th album for the label and his most romantic record to date.

The Canadian singer-songwriter returned to the studio with a new perspective on life and a renewed commitment to honoring the music he has always loved.

“I didn’t anticipate returning to recording or performing and I was fine with that. My entire world view has changed completely these last few years. I wanted to spend all my time with my wife and kids. That was my focus. During that time, I also learned how much love and humanity is out in the world from the prayers and good wishes we received. But slowly, along with understanding what my priorities in life are, I began to feel a new commitment to express the emotions and lessons I’ve embraced. Whether I am the narrator, the observer, the main character, the dreamer, the broken hearted guy at a bar or having the night of a lifetime, I have stories to tell on this record. It’s all there in the songs. I have had so many blessings in life and one of them is that I hold the torch to keep these songs alive for generations to come. I take the responsibility very seriously. My end game for the new record was to create a series of short cinematic stories for each song I chose and have it stand on its own. I’m so proud of what we accomplished,” commented Bublé.

Bublé co-produced his new album and brings new love to several rich classics from the American Songbook. The album opens with the idealistic and dreamy “When I Fall In Love.” It also includes a haunting take on another Rogers & Hart standard, “My Funny Valentine.” Other standouts are an ebullient “When You’re Smiling,” a swinging “Such A Night” as well as Bublé’s hand-picked favorites including “Unforgettable,” “Help Me Make It Through The Night,” and “I Only Have Eyes For You.” Two standout tracks are Charlie Puth’s swinging “Love You Anymore” and an achingly poignant “La Vie En Rose” – a Bublé duet featuring singer Cecile McLorin Salvant. A touching Bublé penned original ‘Forever Now” demonstrates his songwriting skills, which were previously shown in such Bublé written hits like “Home,” “Haven’t Met You Yet” and “Everything.” The album closes with a show-stopping version of “Where or When.” ❤️was produced by David Foster, longtime collaborator Jochem van der Saag and Michael Bublé. The trio brought Bublé’s visions to life with luscious arrangements surrounding his rich vocals.

Michael Bublé has sold over 60 million records worldwide, performed hundreds of sold-out shows around the globe, and won four Grammys and multiple Juno Awards during the course of his extraordinary career. At two sold-out shows this past summer in London’s Hyde Park and Dublin’s Croke Park, he received an overwhelming welcome back to the stage from more than 100,000 fans. Bublé is scheduled to perform at London’s 02 Arena on September 29th and Sydney, Australia’s Allianz Stadium on October 5th.
