CBC Digs Deep Into Its Archives For New Music Series, From The Vaults, Premiering November 15

Featuring rarely seen historic performances and candid interviews with the biggest names in music over the past 60 years, including Sammy Davis Jr., The Guess Who, Leonard Cohen, Shania Twain, Celine Dion, Buffy Sainte Marie, Bryan Adams, and many more.

Includes moments from past CBC shows that helped launch stars’ careers: Adrienne Clarkson Presents, Let’s Go, Nightcap, Parade, Pilot One, Take 30, Talent Caravan, The Tommy Hunter Show, The Wayne & Shuster Hour and others.

CBC is set to release original series FROM THE VAULTS on Thursday, November 15 at 9 p.m. (9:30 p.m. NT) on CBC, the CBC TV streaming app and cbc.ca/watch. Hosted by Amanda Parris and Tom Power, FROM THE VAULTS takes viewers on an all-access journey into a Canadian treasure that few have ever seen: the CBC music archives. The six-part series spans 60 years of Canada’s music history, shining a light on many remarkable moments including Sammy Davis Jr. in his first ever solo television special Parade on CBC, Shania Twain performing on CBC’s The Tommy Hunter Show at the age of 14, and Leonard Cohen’s television debut on CBC’s Take 30 in 1966.

Emmy® Award-winning Banger Films produced FROM THE VAULTS, sorting through 600 hours of content from the CBC archives over a five month period to gather the 200 minutes of footage that appear in the series. FROM THE VAULTS includes seldom-seen performances by Celine Dion, The Guess Who, k.d. lang, Leonard Cohen, Paul Anka, Sammy Davis Jr., Shania Twain and more. Over 60 candid interviews with musicians and industry insiders including Adrienne Clarkson, Carole Pope, Maestro Fresh Wes, Paul Anka, Paul Soles, Randy Bachman, Sarah McLachlan and Shad are also featured throughout to provide further insight into the groundbreaking music moments from the mid-1950s onwards.

FROM THE VAULTS showcases performances from:

World-renown entertainer Sammy Davis Jr., singer-songwriter Joan Baez, reggae legend Jackie Mittoo and blues singer Muddy Waters seeking the freedom to explore their talents on Canadian soil.

The Beatles and Stern Pinball Announce the First and Only Beatles Pinball Machine Ever Made

The game also features iconic introductions by Ed Sullivan along with custom speech and callouts by Hall of Fame disk jockey, Cousin Brucie. Cousin Brucie introduced The Beatles at New York’s Shea Stadium in 1964.

The retro-themed playfield features four flippers, eleven drop targets, eight stand-up targets, multiple skill shots, two opto-spinners, a ball-catching magnet and a magnetic spinning record disc in the center of the playfield. Players, friends and family will enjoy full screen animations as well as simulated reel scoring on the game’s high definition video screen.

All models feature unique art packages and custom powder-coated armor. The 100 Diamond Editions are numbered, certified collectible and include a mirrored backglass. The 250 Platinum Editions are numbered and certified collectible.

Merry Clayton’s Isolated Vocals From the Night She Sung on ‘Gimme Shelter’ in Her Pajamas

Gimme Shelter, the opening track to the 1969 album Let It Bleed by the Rolling Stones has a long, storied history. Greil Marcus, writing in Rolling Stone magazine at the time of its release, praised the song, stating that the band has “never done anything better”.

The recording features guest vocals by Merry Clayton, recorded at a last-minute late-night recording session during the mixing phase, arranged by her friend and record producer Jack Nitzsche. After the first verse is sung by Jagger, Merry Clayton enters and they share the next three verses. A harmonica solo by Jagger and guitar solo by Richards follow. Then, with great energy, Clayton repeatedly sings “Rape, murder! It’s just a shot away! It’s just a shot away!”, almost screaming the final stanza. She and Jagger then repeat the line “It’s just a shot away” and finish with repeats of “It’s just a kiss away”. When speaking of her inclusion in the recording, Jagger stated in the 2003 book According to the Rolling Stones: “The use of the female voice was the producer’s idea. It would be one of those moments along the lines of ‘I hear a girl on this track – get one on the phone.'” Summoned – pregnant – from bed around midnight by Nitzsche, Clayton made her recording with just a few takes then returned home to bed.

At about 2:59 into the song, Clayton’s voice cracks under the strain; once during the second refrain on the word “shot”, then on the word “murder” during the third refrain, after which Jagger is faintly heard exclaiming “Woo!” in response to Clayton’s powerful delivery. Upon returning home, Clayton suffered a miscarriage, attributed by some sources to her exertions during the recording.

Merry Clayton’s name was erroneously written on the original release, appearing as ‘Mary’. Her name is also listed as ‘Mary’ on the 2002 Let It Bleed remastered CD.

The White Room is the fourth and final studio album by British electronic music group The KLF, released in March 1991. Originally scheduled for 1989 as the soundtrack to a film of the same name, the album’s direction was changed after both the film and the original soundtrack LP were cancelled. Most tracks on the original album version are present in the final release, though in significantly remixed form.

In 1993, NME staff and contributors voted the album the 81st best of all time. The Guardian listed it at the 89th best British album of all time and Scotland on Sunday listed the album in their “Essential 100”.Readers of Scotland’s Is this music? magazine voted The White Room the 44th best “Scottish” LP of all time.
