Boz Scaggs Reconnects With His Roots On Gritty, Soulful ‘Out Of The Blues’ Out July 27

0

Boz Scaggs is in the midst of a musical renaissance. Through his recent explorations in R&B, jazz and the Great American Songbook, the versatile singer/songwriter/guitarist has created a highly personal, unfailingly soulful modern repertoire. The latest edition, ‘Out of the Blues,’ set for release on July 27, 2018 on Concord Records, finds Scaggs – born in Ohio, raised in Texas and Oklahoma – reconnecting with his earliest musical and regional influences.

The self-produced ‘Out of the Blues’ features Scaggs applying his iconic voice and gritty guitar skills to a set of vintage classics by such blues greats as Bobby “Blue” Bland, Jimmy Reed and Magic Sam, an unexpected and stirring reading of Neil Young’s “On the Beach,” and original compositions by his friend and songwriter Jack Walroth. For the occasion, Scaggs assembled a star-studded studio band including guitarists Doyle Bramhall II, Ray Parker Jr. and Charlie Sexton, bassist Willie Weeks, drummer Jim Keltner, keyboardist Jim Cox, and Walroth on harmonica, all supporting Boz himself on guitar, bass and vocoder.

This album marks the final piece of an unofficial trilogy for Scaggs, which began with the Steve Jordan-produced albums ‘Memphis’ and ‘A Fool to Care.’ “I’m a child of the ’50s,” he explains, “and grew up on the music of my parents’ generation – the post war swingers, the Hit Parade era, the semi-classical Gershwin albums and the American songbook of show and film music. Then came early rock radio; with Elvis, Fats Domino, Chuck Berry and Little Richard, the high-watt late night radio out of Nashville and Chicago and doowop out of the East Coast. All the same stars that dotted the musical heaven our generation grew up under. Particular to my coming of age in the Southwest was hearing that crazy stuff out of south Texas and Louisiana. It was something different from that which my fellow teenyboppers in other areas were hearing. These albums, to some degree, are an exploration of those early influences, tracked through different periods of my experience.”

Indeed, it’s been a life of music for Boz Scaggs, spread far and wide through a remarkable range in style and influence. From his early West Coast rock and soul bands, through his smooth ’70s Hollywood years with hits like “Lowdown” and “Lido Shuffle,” through to more recent chart-toppers ‘Speak Low’ and ‘A Fool to Care,’ which both reached #1 on the Billboard Jazz and Blues charts respectively.

Dawn Landes Teams With Country Legends For ‘Meet Me At The River’ Album

0

Dawn Landes is one of the most fearlessly innovative musicians working today, but the songwriter has made potentially her boldest turn yet with ‘Meet Me At The River’ (August 10 / Yep Roc Records). The twelve-song collection results from an unexpected partnership with Nashville legend Fred Foster, whose list of production credits includes Roy Orbison’s “Hey Pretty Woman,” Dolly Parton’s debut album and Kris Kristofferson’s first #1. Teaming with the Country Music Hall of Famer was far from a predictable move for Landes, whose previous collaborators include Sufjan Stevens, Nico Muhly, Norah Jones, Will Oldham and Andrew Bird. Despite shaping up as something of a musical odd couple, Landes and Foster bring the best of their respective worlds to ‘Meet Me At The River,’ creating something a more conventional pairing could never touch.

‘Meet Me At The River’ marks the first time that Foster has taken on a new act in years, only sporadically producing for friends like Willie Nelson, Merle Haggard and Ray Price. That all changed when Landes cold-called Foster from a tour with Sufjan Stevens in New Zealand. Upon her return to the States, they spent hours in Foster’s Tennessee home; listening to Hank Williams and trading stories as Landes dazzled with her heart-wrenching vocals and expressive songwriting. The connection was instant, and Foster’s semi-retirement was no more.

For the ‘Meet Me At The River’ sessions, Foster assembled an A-Team of Nashville musicians: 13-time Academy of Country Music drummer of the year Eddie Bayers, fellow Country Music Hall of Famer Charlie McCoy on harmonica and ‘From Elvis In Memphis’ pianist Bobby Wood among them. Foster even recruited Bobby Bare, with 70 hits on the country charts in a five-decade career, to duet with Landes on her original “I Don’t Dance.” The track is one of ten Landes-penned songs on the record, embracing themes of heartbreak (“Why They Name Whiskey After Men”), wanderlust (the insatiably catchy “Traveling”) and reckoning with youth (“Southern Girl,” “Old Memories”). ‘Meet Me At The River’ also sees Landes revive a pair of lost gems from folk singer Jimmy Driftwood, a Foster collaborator from the 1960s. His politically-charged “What Is The Color Of The Soul of Man” feels particularly poignant in Landes’ hands, even 55 years after its initial release.

Landes will bring ‘Meet Me At The River’ to life during a string of intimate shows in Nashville, Los Angeles and New York around release. A full list of dates is below.

The Prince Estate and TIDAL Announce Agreement to Debut New and Unreleased Prince Album

0

The Prince Estate and global music and entertainment platform TIDAL confirm plans to debut highly anticipated new Prince music exclusively via the TIDAL streaming service. The new album will contain previously unreleased music sourced from Prince’s vast archive of Vault recordings. The album – expected to be released in 2019 – will stream exclusively on TIDAL for fourteen days and will be available for download seven days after its debut. A global physical release is planned via The Prince Estate following the exclusive digital premiere on TIDAL. The new release marks a continuation of Prince’s 2015 partnership with TIDAL, which resulted in the exclusive debut of HITnRUN Phase One and HITnRUN Phase Two via the streaming service. This concludes the previously unresolved legal matters between The Prince Estate and TIDAL.

The Prince Estate and Jay-Z are working together on the song selection for the album. “Our only goal is to share Prince’s music with his fans as he wanted. After thoughtful and honest conversation with him, he chose TIDAL as his partner for HITnRUN Phase One and HITnRUN Phase Two, and we will continue to respect and honor Prince’s enduring legacy and wishes with this new collection,” Jay-Z said. Troy Carter, speaking on behalf of The Prince Estate, echoed those sentiments, noting “I’m very pleased this is resolved, and we get to honor the relationship between Prince and TIDAL with this album. We look forward to fans hearing the new music and experiencing the genius of Prince.”

The album partnership with TIDAL does not involve any of Prince’s music catalogue that is subject to prior agreements with Warner Brothers Records, Inc. The agreement between TIDAL and The Prince Estate was approved on May 9, 2018 by the Probate Court overseeing The Prince Estate.

Live Nation Entertainment has established the Women Nation Fund, an early-stage investment fund focused on female-led live music businesses. Live Nation is setting up the fund and will provide access to the company’s resources and capital for underrepresented female entrepreneurs in the concert promotions, events and festival spaces. The announcement was made today by Live Nation’s President and CEO, Michael Rapino.

Stated Rapino: “As the leader in live entertainment, we want to meaningfully address this issue, change the dynamic and widen the playing field. The Women Nation Fund is a first step towards empowering new entrepreneurs and creating more opportunity for women in this sector of the live music business.”

“Women are underrepresented across the entertainment ecosystem, but we see this particularly in the music industry,” said Dr. Stacy Smith, the Founder and Director of the Annenberg Inclusion Initiative at the University of Southern California.  “One crucial way to kick-start the effort towards gender parity is to fund female entrepreneurs.  I applaud Live Nation for their leadership and for committing its resources in a way that can affect real change.”

The Women Nation Fund will identify, fund and grow the pool of female-led festivals, events and promotion companies available on a worldwide basis. Entrant businesses must be female-founded and oriented around concert promotion, festivals or live venue management. The Women Nation evaluating team is comprised of Live Nation female executives with diverse domain expertise including Anna Sjolund (Co-Managing Director/Head Promoter, Live Nation Sweden), Amy Corbin (Promoter, C3), Virginia Davis (Founder, G Major Management), Amy Howe (COO, Ticketmaster), Lesley Olenik (VP, Touring), Maura Gibson (President, Frontgate Ticketing), Kelly Chappel (VP, Touring) and Carrie Davis (Chief Communications Officer). Businesses selected by the fund will be given access to Live Nation resources such as strategic advisory, industry contacts and mentorship across lines of business and functional areas.

The First Trailer for ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ Is Out

0

Bohemian Rhapsody is a foot-stomping celebration of Queen, their music and their extraordinary lead singer Freddie Mercury, who defied stereotypes and shattered convention to become one of the most beloved entertainers on the planet. The film traces the meteoric rise of the band through their iconic songs and revolutionary sound, their near-implosion as Mercury’s lifestyle spirals out of control, and their triumphant reunion on the eve of Live Aid, where Mercury, facing a life-threatening illness, leads the band in one of the greatest performances in the history of rock music. In the process, cementing the legacy of a band that were always more like a family, and who continue to inspire outsiders, dreamers and music lovers to this day. Rami Malek stars at Freddie, with Gwilym Lee as guitarist Brian May, Ben Hardy as drummer Roger Taylor and Joseph Mazzello as bass player John Beacon, and it’s in theatres November 2, 2018.
