Roger Daltrey is returning on June 1 with a brand new studio album, As Long As I Have You

0

The Who’s Roger Daltrey is returning on June 1 with a brand new studio album, As Long As I Have You.

As Long As I Have You was produced by Dave Eringa, best known for his work with the Manic Street Preachers and on Roger and Wilko Johnson’s album Going Back Home and features Pete Townshend’s inimitable guitar on seven tracks as well as guest performances from Mick Talbot on keyboards (Dexy’s, The Style Council) and Sean Genockey on lead guitar who has worked with Suede, Shame and The Proclaimers).

Work on As Long As I Have You was started shortly after the Top 5 gold selling Going Back Home was released and continued during breaks on The Who’s record breaking 50th anniversary tour, The Who Hits 50!

As Long As I Have You will be available on a number of formats including CD, 180g Black Vinyl, Limited 180g Red Vinyl housed in Polydor Disco Bag (available exclusively via thewho.com) and Digital.

The album is a mixture of self-penned tracks such as ‘Certified Rose’ and the soulful ballad ‘Always Heading Home’ along with songs that have inspired Daltrey over the years including Nick Cave’s ‘Into My Arms’, ‘You Haven’t Done Nothing’ by Stevie Wonder, Stephen Stills’ ‘How Far’ and the title track originally recorded by Garnet Mimms in 1964; the year that Daltrey, Townshend, Entwistle and Moon changed their name from The High Numbers and became The Who.

Roger Daltrey on As Long As I Have You: “This is a return to the very beginning, to the time before Pete [Townshend] started writing our songs, to a time when we were a teenage band playing soul music to small crowds in church halls. That’s what we were, a soul band. And now, I can sing soul with all the experience you need to sing it. Life puts the soul in. I’ve always sung from the heart but when you’re 19, you haven’t had the life experience with all its emotional trials and traumas that you have by the time you get to my age. You carry all the emotional bruises of life and when you sing these songs, those emotions are in your voice. You feel the pain of a lost love. You feel it and you sing it and that’s soul. For a long time, I’ve wanted to return to the simplicity of these songs, to show people my voice, a voice they won’t have heard before. It felt like the right time. It’s where I am, looking back to that time, looking across all those years but also being here, now, in the soulful moment”

Roger will be headlining the Royal Albert Hall on March 22 in aid of The Teenage Cancer Trust.

Toronto’s Luminato Festival Seeking 100 Electric Guitar Players For George Harrison Tribute Concert

0

Whether you normally play salsa or Sibelius, hi-life or Hendrix, St Vincent or Justin Bieber – this orchestra is for you! Toronto’s Luminato Festival is seeking 100 electric guitar enthusiasts to perform in While 100 Guitars Gently Weep, concerto for George Harrison by composer and soloist Tim Brady.

Since 2015, composer/guitarist Tim Brady has been creating site-specific works for mass ensembles of electric guitars, enlivening shopping malls, old railway buildings and hockey arenas. Now, Luminato has commissioned him to write a new work for 100 spatialized guitars to pay homage to George Harrison, who would have been 75 years old in 2018. With a mix of professional and community musicians, While 100 Guitars Gently Weep – Concerto for George is a monumental new work that celebrates the electric guitar and the sheer joy of playing it out loud, in public for all to hear!

Guitarists should have played for at least two years, feel somewhat comfortable with basic barre chords (major and minor) up to the 7th fret, be willing to work with very basic music notation, and, most importantly, be interested in working with 99 other guitarists in creating a truly unique artistic experience and expanding their musical horizons.

After you audition, Tim Brady will select a final company of 100 electric guitarists who will be part of Instruments of Happiness. Shortly after guitarists will be selected, video tutorials will be available to begin learning the piece.

All The Songs Ever Played On WKRP in Cincinnati

0

WKRP in Cincinnati was such a brilliant show, and one of the first entries into the music business I had as a kid. It followed the staff of a struggling fictional radio station in Cincinnati, Ohio, and was created by Hugh Wilson based upon his experiences working in advertising sales at Top 40 radio station WQXI in Atlanta.

Fun fact: A full-length version of the original theme song was released in 1979 on a 45 rpm vinyl single on the MCA Records label. It peaked at 65 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in 1981 and at 29 on the Adult Contemporary chart in 1982.

Music licensing deals cut at the time of production were for a limited number of years. Hugh Wilson commented that WKRP was videotaped instead of filmed because when the show was originally produced, a loophole in music licensing deals reduced fees for using songs in videotaped programs. Once the licenses expired, later syndicated versions of the show did not feature the music as first broadcast, but rather generic “sound-alikes” by studio musicians to avoid paying additional royalties. In some cases (when the music was playing in the background of a dialogue scene), some of the characters’ lines had to be redubbed by sound-alike actors. The expense of procuring licenses for the original music in the series delayed any release of a DVD set for years. When it finally was released, much of the music was replaced bythose soundalike artists.

And now, someone has created a spreadsheet for all the songs played on the show. Makes you want to go on Spotify now to check them out, right? Here you go, and you can go here for the listing.

That Time Stephen Hawking Performed With Monty Python For Record Store Day

0

Originally written by Eric Idle and John Du Prez for the 1983 film Monty Python’s The Meaning Of Life, Galaxy Song was re-recorded with the lyrics sung by Professor Stephen Hawking in his distinctive style. Re-released as a limited edition 7” single for Record Store Day 2015, the song is an intricate and informative lecture on the enormity of the Universe fashioned into a bewitching and, above all, highly amusing pop song. The single is in fact an extended version from Stephen Hawking’s appearance in the July 2014 reunion shows at the O2.
