So So Def 25 Coming This Summer

0

Legacy Recordings, the catalog division of Sony Music Entertainment, will commemorate the 25th anniversary of Atlanta’s hottest hip-hop label with the release of So So Def 25 as a digital album coming this summer through Certified Classics, home of the undisputed classics of hip-hop and R&B from the 80s, 90s and 00s. A 12″ vinyl collector’s edition of So So Def 25 will also be available.

So So Def 25 includes essential smash hits, iconic remixes, and deep cuts from the label’s quarter-century catalog and more.

So So Def founder Jermaine Dupri says, “I been dreaming of getting to this point since my very first release.”

Dupri (who has co-written No. 1 hits like Mariah Carey’s “We Belong Together” and “Always Be My Baby,” Usher’s “Burn” and Monica’s “The First Night”) will be the second hip-hop act ever to be inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame, the organization announced on February 6. The 2018 Songwriters Hall of Fame will honor this year’s inductees at its Annual Induction & Awards Gala on June 14, 2018, in New York City.

Thus far 2018 also sees Dupri being honored with the 2018 Trumpet Awards Music Innovation Award, the 2018 Global Spin Awards Breaking Barriers Award airing on REVOLT and the 2018 Legendary Awards Trailblazer Award.

The visionary producer/musician/entrepreneur launched So So Def Recordings in 1993, following the success of Kris Kross’s hit song “Jump,” which was written and produced by Dupri and just celebrated its 25th anniversary last year. So So Def brought together strains of Southern hip-hop, R&B, soul, and new club sounds to create an ongoing catalog of music that continues to transform the culture. So So Def’s first act, the female R&B vocal quartet Xscape struck platinum with three albums in a row beginning with their 1993 debut Hummin’ Comin’ at ‘Cha continuing through Off the Hook (1995) and Traces of My Lipstick (1998). A creative wellspring for some of contemporary hip-hop’s most innovative artists, So So Def released Da Brat’s historic 1994 debut Funkdafied, the first album by a female solo rapper to achieve platinum status, and, in 1997, introduced the R&B hitmakers Jagged Edge to the world with the group’s debut album, A Jagged Era.

In 2000, So So Def released Beware of Dog, the debut album from (then) 13-year-old hip-hop prodigy Lil Bow Wow. Supported by four smash singles–“Bounce with Me” featuring Xscape, “Bow Wow (That’s My Name)” featuring Snoop Dogg, “Puppy Love” featuring Jagged Edge, and “Ghetto Girls”–Beware of Dog went triple platinum, propelling Bow Wow into the hip-hop stratosphere.

The celebration of So So Def will continue throughout 2018 with Legacy Recordings set to press 12″ vinyl reissues of select catalog titles and release additional digital content.

Plans for an all-star So So Def Tour are currently in the works.

Willie Nelson Announces Powerhouse Studio album of 11 Newly-Penned Songs on Latest Album, Last Man Standing

0

Legacy Recordings, a division of Sony Music Entertainment, will release Last Man Standing, Willie Nelson’s new studio album (and 11th for the label), on Friday, April 27.

Arriving just in time for Willie’s 85th birthday (April 29), Last Man Standing will be available on CD, 12″ vinyl LP and digital formats. The first single from the project is the title track from the album “Last Man Standing” and Willie shared a music video capturing the making of the track today.

Last Man Standing, comprised entirely of songs newly-penned by Willie Nelson (and longtime collaborator and producer Buddy Cannon), is the worthy successor to Willie’s God’s Problem Child, which showcased seven Nelson-Cannon compositions and debuted at #1 on the Country charts. Willie and Buddy have been working together since 2008 with Cannon producing more than a dozen of Willie’s albums.

The songwriting duo deploys a unique strategy of shared composition, beginning with back-and-forth text messaging of lyrics with the melodies. On Last Man Standing, Nelson and Cannon’s unorthodox approach generated eleven original songs, “Willie’s a jazz singer and jazz player. He’s an improvisational musician. It’s different every time. Get a good take and go with it,” says Cannon,

With Last Man Standing, Nelson has added 11 essential new songs to his classic catalog. One of Willie’s most personal and introspective albums to-date, Last Man Standing reveals the emotional range of Willie’s concerns, from the deeply reflective (“Something You Get Through,” to the rollicking and playful (“Me and You,” “Ready to Roar”)

An album that acknowledges the transience of time while marveling at the joy, beauty and surprise the world has to offer, Last Man Standing finds Willie Nelson rolling at a creative peak, writing and singing and playing with the seasoned wit and wisdom that comes from the road.

GEO
Mágica (feat. Caro Pierotto)
Growing up, GEO wasn’t really surrounded by a whole lot of “world” music until he started listening to and playing a lot of jazz. He brings his own unique personality to this bossa, samba, and salsa-tinged-flavoured track.

Justin 3
Tonight We Are Lovers
A captivating rock track perfect for those romantic first – or last – dances chalked full of lushly textured moments.

My Will To End You
Behind Mom & Bear is songwriter and producer Jens Rahbek Johansen and he takes control of his second single with a powerful and alt.rock composition.

Letter From Your Past
Spooky stuff, like a crucial scene from a David Lynch film or your own psychological thriller going on in your own head late at night. It marches on.

Champion Electric
Squid
If you’ve been missing MGMT, this group will glamorously take the lead here. With the studio as their playground, they’re far from even reaching their full potential, and, amazingly, this is going to give him a running start to success.

Cedar House
Jilted Lover

The basic assumptions about Americana aren’t in play here, as there’s influences from Jason Isbell and The Civil Wars but it rivals The National and My Morning Jacket’s fuller sound, too. Vintage and modern, all at the same time.

Lex Rex and the Dragons
Trigger
Between the two scoops of Hip-Hop and the turnaround to Pop/Synth, you’ll want more of this as soon as the song ends.

An astonishing trip to the chaos of the world, but with the vibe of The Chainsmokers as your soundtrack.

For fans of Jessie Ware, Billie Eilish, and FKA Twigs, the LA-based producer and performer is back with this intimate and aching ode to unexplained rejection.

Do It All Again
Her uncanny ability to turn the song with a lush arrangement with an elegant vocal into one with a side of dancefloor with cinematographic Northern soul is no easy feat. She does it here with ease.

Those Wicked Hours
West
One for the headphones. The song was was meant to be about the gold rush in the mid 1800s. As the song evolved, the west was seen in a broader sense and became more a place of nostalgia rather than a geographic location. Love it and let it wash over you.

The Story Of A Rock Band Pulled Apart By Mysterious Circumstances

0

An unknown rock band struggles with a radioactive energy in their music that blows up amps, liquefies tape decks, and starts electrical fires. On the eve of their first (and possibly last) show, they must decide whether to risk life, limb, and legacy for a 1AM slot on a Tuesday. It could change everything…or nothing at all.

Tuxedo: NPR Music Tiny Desk Concert

0

The pairing of Tuxedo is a natural feel in person, but highly unlikely on paper. Seattle-based producer Jake One has a who’s-who client list, from Rick Ross to 21 Savage — while DJ, singer-songwriter and producer Mayer Hawthorne is a renaissance soul man from Ann Arbor, Michigan. They stealthily debuted three tracks on SoundCloud in 2013 with only a black square stamped “Tuxedo” as the cover art, leaving fans wondering where this new funk was coming from. A few months later they unveiled their identities along with a debut self-titled LP, resurrecting a sound popularized by greats like The Gap Band, The Fatback Band and Roger Troutman.

The National’s Musical Adaptation Of Cyrano de Bergerac Making Its Debut This Summer

0

The National have recently collaborated with theater writer/director Erica Schmidt for a new musical adaptation of the classic Edmond Rostand story Cyrano de Bergerac, which will take place at Connecticut’s Terris Theatre, running from August 3 – September 2, 2018, as part of theater company Goodspeed’s 2018 season.

The legendary romance about a proud and impassioned poet who ghost writes love letters is rekindled in a timeless and unconventional new musical. Cyrano agrees to woo his true love, Roxanne, on behalf of another in this classic tale of unrequited love. New music by members of the Grammy Award-winning indie alternative band The National drives this story of mistaken identity, selfless courage and buried desire.
