Short Cuts: The Best Songs Heard On February 5, 2018 From The Indie World

0

Natalie Migdal
I’ve Run Out of Words
When you need to get out of a relationship that’s done, you can do a few things – head for the bar, head for the club, head for friends to cry on, or, if you’re an artist, you write a song about it. Not sure if Natalie did the first couple of choices, but I’m thankful she chose to record her feelings. You don’t have to have gone through a breakup to dig this song, but it’ll help.

Crooked Cat Adams
Lone Bulb
Crooked Cat Adams is not just the greatest name of what could have been the best criminal ever, but the moniker of singer/songwriter Patrick Barry. His tempered vocals are right up front, which is a pretty cool choice to my ears, which leaves no mistake and not be hidden by the music underneath. A great piece of music-making into a trippy, today sound of rock.

ARLO
Homecoming
As heard on BBC Radio 1 works overtime with his song. It’s easy to see why Elton John tipped him as one to watch. The fast-paced modern pop and R&B cuts through the rest of the pretenders. Rivals anything else I’ve heard this year for greatness.

Telamor
You’re My Fire
Propelled by his distinctive vocals, with its 1980s raw throwback sound Telamor bridges the gap between the classic rock of yesterday and the indie pop of today. He can control his own musical destiny passing through The Smiths and Squeeze, making it on the other side with his own sound.

G E N I U S
Blessed Trooper (ft. Harris)
A dark and spooky track with a hundred-words-a-minute rap hitting you so fast you have to listen twice. Or three times. But you won’t mind. It’s that good.

Whooda Thunk
Walk With Me
By finding inspiration in everything from metal-band Korn, electronic artist Aphex Twin, he’s got his finger on the popular music, while expanding his horizons to meshing genres together.

PETE CHO
BURN SLOW
No stranger to the music industry, Pete spent years as a DJ touring the U.S., enthralling crowds on stages from Lollapalooza to North Coast Music Festival before leaving it all in 2012 to care for his ailing father. After a short stint running a successful restaurant, he’s back in music. Don’t underestimate him – he’s got the qualities of determination, passion and serves notice he’s back and ready to go for good.

Brandon White
Bitter & Bright
His style is reminiscent of great storytellers like Bruce Springsteen and Johnny Cash, and already has a couple of dozen songs licensed for retail establishments and restaurants. This is where the real industry is, and if he keeps up this quality of contemporary songwriting, he’s going to be massive – in the studio writing for others, or on stage. Pick ’em.

Leena Ojala
My World
Indie electronica artist Leena Ojala combines dark lyrics with 80s-infused vibes and big melodies to create a sound that’s at once haunting, ethereal and captivating. It’s the sound of tomorrow, today.

Andrew Fletcher
Parties
He says the song is presenting the feeling of “being at a party and feeling detached from the majority of the people there, besides the one person that you’re secretly crazy about.” Oh, man, that’s me. That’s likely you. Meet me in not in the kitchen, but upstairs, playing with the cat. The very definition of lonely, sorrow, and hope put into music.

OHHIOH
On Our Own
The kind of rock that should have been huge with Peter Bjorn and John leading the way back in 2006. I’m going to put my money on this band for the next big run coming out of Denmark.

Carrie Brownstein Of Sleater-Kinney On Riot Grrrl’s Contemporary Relevance

0

It was a movement that really aimed to center women’s experiences in a very unapologetic way and to bring up the subject of discrimination and exploitation where women had often been the object, especially in the context of rock music. This sort of put women as the unabashed narrator, the unabashed protagonist of their own story, and actually had a very outsized influence considering how peripheral it was in terms of mainstream music. And there were riot grrrl meetings, women-only meetings — people talking about experiences of sexism, sexual harassment, a lot of analogies to what is going on today. Of course, riot grrrl was a successor of earlier modes of organizing, and definitely instilled in me a boldness that I think I has served me well in my life.

The Beatles In India Documentary Is Coming This Year

0

New feature film documentary THE BEATLES IN INDIA, directed by two time Emmy award winning producer-director, Paul Saltzman and produced by Paul Saltzman & Reynold D’Silva for Sunrise Films, Ren/oir Pictures & Silva Screen is set to be released worldwide in Autumn 2018.

In 1968, with the eyes of the world upon them, The Beatles travelled to Rishikesh, India, to study Transcendental Meditation with Maharishi Mahesh Yogi in a remote ashram on the banks of the sacred river Ganges. Those few short weeks became one of the most prolific and creative periods of their lives.

Also present at the ashram was a young Canadian filmmaker named Paul Saltzman, there to heal a recently broken heart while seeking his own path to understanding and enlightenment. In the informal and relaxed atmosphere, he captured some of the most famous and intimate photographic portraits of The Beatles ever taken.

The film details Saltzman’s return journey to India, The Beatles stay and the songs they composed at the ashram as well as meditation as it applies to creativity, the divine inner journey and the healing power of love and music.

Integral to the story will be the background of many of the songs written in India and how they progressed through their initial writing, intensive rehearsals back in England and the release of the White Album on November 22nd, 1968.

Rarely seen footage and images, in depth interviews from India, the UK and North America and an authoritative team behind the film heralds its release later this year.

Producer Reynold D’Silva said: “The idea of a Beatles in India documentary has been with me since the mid-nineties. By pure coincidence, or perhaps it was fate, three separate people put me in touch with Paul early last year. It turned out he had been harbouring the idea for even longer than I had! After our first phone call, we were set on a path to produce the film together. Paul has a stellar track record in his field of producing and directing films. He has a clear vision with a profound knowledge of the subject matter borne out by the fact he was at the ashram in Rishikesh with The Beatles in February, 1968.”

Legendary Rock Bands Chicago & Reo Speedwagon Announce Co-Headline North American Summer Tour

0

Two of the most successful and critically acclaimed rock bands REO Speedwagon and Chicago – who have sold 140 million records combined – announced today a co-headline North American summer tour kicking off June 13, 2018 in Concord, CA. The 30+ date tour, promoted by Live Nation, will take the multi-platinum selling groups through major cities including Los Angeles, Chicago, Boston, Toronto, Atlanta and Nashville for a night of unforgettable live music. The tour will conclude August 12 in Detroit, MI.

Tickets for the tour go on sale starting Friday, February 9 at 12 p.m.

Says Chicago’s Robert Lamm of the upcoming trek: “It’s always a party sharing the stage with Kevin, Neal, Bruce, Dave and Bryan! They rock. We rock. The tour rocks!”

REO Speedwagon frontman Kevin Cronin agrees: “We love the Chicago guys. We all share that Midwest rock’ n roll ethic. We work hard, rock hard & take care of business. So, c’mon out and party with Chicago and REO this summer.”

Fans will be treated to a night filled with a deep catalog of hits from both bands. Chicago, in planning a show unlike any other they’ve done before, will perform their historic album Chicago II in its entirety followed by the “world’s longest encore” as the band jokingly refers to it, filled with their greatest hits. REO Speedwagon will electrify audiences with hits and fan-favorites such as “In Your Letter,” “Can’t Fight This Feeling,” “Time For Me To Fly,” “Roll With The Changes,” “Keep On Loving You,” “Take It On the Run” and more.

Hailed as one of the “most important bands in music since the dawn of the rock and roll era” by former President Bill Clinton, the legendary rock and roll band with horns, Chicago, came in at #9, the highest charting American band in Billboard Magazine’s Hot 200 All-Time Top Artists. And Chicago is the first American rock band to chart Top 40 albums in six consecutive decades. Some recent inductions include: Chicago was inducted into the 2016 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame; their first album, Chicago Transit Authority, was inducted into the GRAMMY Hall Of Fame in 2014; and Robert Lamm and James Pankow have become the latest inductees of the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2017. Chicago’s lifetime achievements include two Grammy Awards, multiple American Music Awards, a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, record sales topping the 100,000,000 mark, 21 Top 10 singles, 5 consecutive Number One albums, 11 Number One singles and 5 Gold singles. An incredible 25 of their 36 albums have been certified platinum, and the band has a total of 47 gold and platinum awards. 2018 marks the band’s 51st consecutive year of touring, without missing a single concert date! Chicago continue to be true ambassadors for their beloved hometown, carrying the city’s name with pride and dignity around the world.

Formed in 1967, signed in 1971, and fronted by iconic vocalist Kevin Cronin since 1972, REO Speedwagon’s unrelenting drive, as well as non-stop touring and recording, jump-started the burgeoning rock movement in the Midwest. Platinum albums and radio staples soon followed, setting the stage for the release of the band’s explosive Hi Infidelity in 1980, which contained the massive hit singles “Keep On Loving You,” and “Take It On the Run.” That landmark album spent 15 weeks in the No. 1 slot and has since earned the RIAA’s coveted 10X Diamond Award for surpassing sales of 10 million units in the United States. REO Speedwagon has now sold 40 million albums around the globe, and Cronin and bandmates Bruce Hall (bass), Neal Doughty (keyboards), Dave Amato (guitar), and Bryan Hitt (drums) are still electrifying audiences worldwide in concert with hits and fan-favorites. Paul Simon Announces “Homeward Bound – The Farewell Tour”

0

Legendary songwriter, recording artist and performer Paul Simon, will embark on his farewell concert tour on May 16 in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada at Rogers Arena. Homeward Bound – The Farewell Tour will encompass shows across North America, the United Kingdom and Europe, with Simon and his band bringing to the stage a stunning, career-spanning repertoire of timeless hits and classic songs which have permeated and influenced popular culture for generations.

Tickets for Paul Simon’s Homeward Bound – The Farewell Tour will go on sale beginning February 8 at 9 a.m. in Europe and February 9 at 10 a.m. in North America and the UK. The complete tour itinerary is listed below. Go to PaulSimon.com for ticketing information as it becomes available.

According to Simon, the Homeward Bound tour is a fitting culmination of a performing career that began in the early 1960s and has coincided with his artistic journey as a songwriter and recording artist until the present day.

He said of this farewell tour, “I’ve often wondered what it would feel like to reach the point where I’d consider bringing my performing career to a natural end. Now I know: it feels a little unsettling, a touch exhilarating and something of a relief. I love making music, my voice is still strong, and my band is a tight, extraordinary group of gifted musicians. I think about music constantly. I am very grateful for a fulfilling career and, of course, most of all to the audiences who heard something in my music that touched their hearts.”

Having created a distinctive and beloved body of work that includes 13 studio albums, plus five studio albums as half of Simon & Garfunkel, Paul Simon is the recipient of 16 Grammy Awards, three of which—Bridge over Troubled Water, Still Crazy after All These Years, and Graceland—were Album of the Year honorees. In 2003, he received a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award for his work in Simon & Garfunkel, and has sold more than 100 million records worldwide.

During his unparalleled career, Simon has achieved 29 Top 40 singles in the U.S. alone, with 14 of those reaching the Top 10 or higher, including “50 Ways to Leave Your Lover” (which reached #1), “Kodachrome,” “Loves Me Like A Rock,” “Mother and Child Reunion,” “Late In The Evening,” “You Can Call Me Al” and many others. With Simon & Garfunkel, he wrote and performed the #1 singles, “The Sound of Silence,” “Mrs. Robinson,” “Bridge Over Troubled Water,” and numerous other timeless hits.

Paul Simon is a member of the Songwriters Hall of Fame and has been inducted into the Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall of Fame, both as a member of Simon & Garfunkel and as a solo artist. Simon was a recipient of the Kennedy Center Honors in 2002 and was named one of Time magazine’s “100 People Who Shape Our World” in 2006. In 2007, Simon was awarded the inaugural Library of Congress Gershwin Prize for Popular Song, which recognizes the profound and positive effect of popular music on the world’s culture. He was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 2011. And in 2012, he was named the recipient of the prestigious Polar Music Prize along with classical cellist Yo-Yo Ma.

Simon’s philanthropic work includes the co-founding of the Children’s Health Fund (CHF), which donates and staffs 53 mobile medical units that bring health care to low-income children and their families in urban and rural locations around the United States. Since its inception in 1987, CHF has provided more than 3 million doctor/patient visits.

Throughout his career, Simon has also raised millions of dollars for worthy causes as varied as Autism Speaks, The Nature Conservancy, CURE, Tibet House and the E.O. Wilson Biodiversity Foundation’s Half-Earth Project, which is committed to stopping the species extinction crisis by conserving half the planet’s lands and oceans.

SOCAN Offers Even More Transparency in North American Music Reproduction Rights

0

SOCAN has reinforced its digital reproduction rights business with Audiam’s launch of Layla, a unique music royalty income and tracking system specifically and only for Audiam clients.

When SOCAN acquired New York-based Audiam in July 2016, it added a state-of-the-art North American digital reproduction rights capability to its well-established Canadian Performing Rights activities, as Audiam’s offerings go far beyond the identification and administration of copyright music used in YouTube videos. Since that time, Audiam has steadily increased business, building and acquiring proprietary technology tools for music publishers with the goal to become the world’s leading digital reproduction rights agency.

With Layla, music publishers and self-published songwriters who are Audiam clients now have a system to track who is recording their songs, where they’re being listened to, how many times they’re streamed, how much each stream generates, what recordings are not being paid on and more.

Layla is an easy-to-use and customizable income tracking system online for Audiam clients to benefit from an overview of all reproduction royalty-generating compositions with the ability to view detailed information of what a composition earned on a specific streaming service, the number of streams and the exact royalty rate that each music service paid.

In addition, the system lets users view monetized YouTube videos and the exact reproduction royalty rate, along with the ability to view and hear a comprehensive list of every recording of a musical work, including those they previously did not know about.

“Audiam’s Layla not only displays massive amounts of data in easy to understand ways, but also analyzes and assures that the data is accurate,” said Audiam CEO Jeff Price. “It removes guesswork and simplifies administration, identifying and recovering earned but unpaid mechanical royalties and ensures publishers and songwriters get paid quickly and efficiently for every fraction of a penny earned.”

SOCAN administers performing rights royalties for music creators and publishers only in Canada. “Performances” of music include radio play, live events, digital streaming and use of music in audio-visual works. “Reproduction,” or “mechanical,” rights comprise the use of copyright musical compositions as permanent digital downloads; interactive streams; and on CDs, records, and tapes.
