This Is Heartbreaking: What Ice Cube Tells His Son About Cops

0
Did you see Between the World And Me? that book that Ta-Nehisi Coates wrote to his son about living in America as a black man. You’re also a father. Your son did did a great job portraying you on the big screen. Did you have a conversation with him about what to do when the cops stop you?

Yeah, and I think all parents should have that talk with their kids—no matter what color you are. I think you definitely need to teach your kids how to deal with the police and how to handle a situation like that or any situation you find yourself in where you’re coming in contact with law enforcement.
You know for me it comes natural, but I feel for those people who think they’re above something happening or they feel like they have a place in society, when the police come they’re gonna be treated better because of their skin color or financial situation, whatever. That to me is the tragedy because it’s really—you know, once you are in contact with the police you’re really in some ways at their mercy. They’re taught to win. They’re not taught to be fair, they’re not taught about all that constitutional stuff you talking, all the rights you think you know. All that is not gonna matter in dealing with the police on the street because they’re taught to win. And if they don’t win, they’re gonna use force. And that force could take your life, so you may be constitutionally right, you may be within your rights as a citizen, and still be killed, hurt, injured, or arrested by the police. So you gotta know that. You gotta know that about them. You know, their thing is to act first and apologize later, so you just gotta know how to deal with that. You gotta know what you’re up against to be able to protect yourself. And I guess my only thing I tell my kids that’s really the thing I hang on to most—and I want them to take in and heed every day—is just survive. You know what I’m saying? Just survive. Survive. Don’t get killed out here. Don’t get hurt out here. You know what I mean? Just make sure you make it to the next day. And that’s the clear-cut message. Just survive today.

Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright, actor Sam Shepard was also a pretty cool drummer, too

0

Sam Shepard, whose death at 73 last year shook the book and film work, will be remembered for his cross-discipline versatility. As a Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright, he penned classic off-Broadway plays including “True West,” “Buried Child” and “Fool for Love.”

An Oscar-nominated actor, he starred in films including “Days of Heaven,” “The Right Stuff,” “Crimes of the Heart” and “The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford.”

To fans of underground music, however, Shepard served a lesser-known role as the drummer for seminal New York avant-garde folk band the Holy Modal Rounders, with whom he performed on the crucial late 1960s albums “Indian War Whoop” and “The Moray Eels Eat the Holy Modal Rounders.”

The band is best known for its song “If You Want to Be a Bird,” which plays during the classic scene in “Easy Rider” in which Dennis Hopper, Peter Fonda and Jack Nicholson roar down the highway on their motorcycles. That’s Shepard playing drums as Rounders founders Peter Stampfel and Steve Weber whoop and yowl.

Short Cuts: The Best Songs Heard On February 23, 2018 From The Indie World

Audiomoe
Body Talkin
Multi-talented Moses Truzman strikes again with his mix sweetness and happiness. His star has never been brighter.

Wild Year
Meanwhile…(Little Spark)
Called their tribute to Laura Palmer, you don’t have to love Twin Peaks to dig this song. It just doesn’t imitate that sound and style of Angelo Badalamenti, but let’s just say David Lynch should keep an open slot for the next soundtrack for this talented group.

Isa Mar
Summer Bummer
A voice so devastatingly good like Lianne La Havas and Lana Del Rey, there might not be anything she can’t sing. This is far from a bummer.

Sun & The Rain Men
Fall A Little Harder
From Sweden, this impressive group came about as a natural consequence of three musicians honing their craft and wanting to create indie folk pop in the same place at the same time. Remarkable and hypnotic.

Water Color Weekend
All You’ve Given
Elbow has to be an influence, and that’s a good thing. As relaxed as the best bands should be in the studio, this song never feels rushed, never a wasted note.

Julia Thomspon
Hits
Alessia Cara, Astrid S, Hailee Steinfeld, Dua Lipa, and Billie Eilish should be making some wiggle room for Julia. As sunny as an afternoon autumn, there’s a fierce batch of melodies here to get you to take that second, and third, and fourth listen. And fifth…

Sugar John
Dalí the Sheep
From their album, Dream Machine vs. the People Duster, and with a title like that, you know it’s going to be a little out there. Slowing down to almost a crawling ballad in the manner of shoegazers, they’ve got confidence in spades to come up with something great. They’re almost there, and this will do nicely in the meantime.

0

5 Seconds of Summer (5SOS) have unveiled their new single – “Want You Back” – and dates for the Spring 2018 5SOS3 tour, a 26 date run of shows around the world to premiere new music for the 5SOS fans.

“Want You Back” is 5SOS’ first new single in nearly two years. After 18 months on the road in support of their No. 1 sophomore album Sounds Good Feels Good, the band has spent the last year living, writing and recording their new album in Los Angeles, set for release through Capitol Records later this year. 5SOS, who built a loyal and passionate fanbase playing shows around the world, has decided to take new music directly to its fans on the 5SOS3 tour, which will kick off on March 20 at Debaser Strand in Stockholm. 5SOS will visit a total of 26 venues on the run, which will include shows at Heaven in London (April 5), New York City’s Irving Plaza (April 12) and the Belasco Theater in Los Angeles (April 25).

Tickets go on sale to the general public starting Saturday, March 3 at 10am local time. Fans can register now through Tuesday, February 27 at 10pm ET at http://5sos.tmverifiedfan.com for free access to the Ticketmaster Verified Fan presale, which will allow vetted fans to purchase tickets for U.S. and Canada dates before the general public from Friday, March 2 at 10am local time through 10pm local time.

“Finally… It’s been 3 years since our last album and we are so ready to share new music with the world,” 5SOS told fans. “After spending the last 5 years on the road since the age of 16, it was important we took time to reflect as individuals and now we’re coming back stronger and more unified than ever. These songs mean the world to us and we have held nothing back in writing and recording this album. We’ve been rehearsing a lot of the new songs live and can’t wait to get back out on tour to connect with our incredible fans.

Hailed as the “biggest new rock act in the world” by Rolling Stone, 5SOS is the only band (not vocal group) in history to see its first two full-length studio albums enter the Billboard 200 at No. 1. 5SOS’s self-titled debut album has sold more than three million units worldwide, with 1.5 million albums and more than 4.5 million single tracks sold in the U.S. alone.

2015’s Sounds Good Feels Good charted at No. 1 in 12 countries, including the U.S., the U.K. and Australia. “She’s Kinda Hot,” the album’s first single, topped the iTunes charts in 44 countries. The band has won an American Music Award, a People’s Choice Award, an iHeartRadio Music Award, five MTV European Music Awards, two ARIA Awards and an MTV Video Music Award.

Sony Pictures Television Lands Worldwide Distribution for CTV’s THE LAUNCH

0

Bell Media, Big Machine Label Group (BMLG), and Sony Pictures Television (SPT) announced today that SPT has secured international distribution rights to the new music TV format THE LAUNCH. As Bell Media and BMLG’s exclusive partner, SPT will distribute THE LAUNCH format worldwide, excluding Canada, and has its production company, Electric Ray, on board to produce the format in the U.K. The historic deal represents the first time a Bell Media original television format for CTV has been sold for international distribution. In addition, SPT will also distribute the Canadian series, which wrapped up its inaugural season on CTV last night, for sale outside of Canada.

In Canada, the inaugural season of THE LAUNCH debuted #1 in its timeslot on CTV and delivered a series of consecutive #1 hits. The series’ original songs have already surpassed 4 million streams worldwide and continue to grow.

Reinventing the music competition series genre, THE LAUNCH debuts a new and unique format, documenting an authentic, behind-the-scenes look at what it takes to break a new artist and bring a song to life. In each stand-alone episode, unsigned emerging artists audition for the opportunity to learn, record and perform a new original song, mentored by a panel of internationally renowned music industry legends.
The mentors then decide which version of the song is released on all platforms immediately following the broadcast of the episode – ultimately deciding in that moment whose career will soar – from discovery to stardom in just 48 hours and all in the span of one episode!

“We are delighted to have THE LAUNCH as our first acquisition under our newly formed Future Formats Team,” said Sarah Edwards, Creative Director of Global Formats, Sony Pictures Television. “As soon as we saw it we knew it was the music talent show we had been looking for. It is a unique and authentic look into what it takes to be a successful performer and recording artist in today’s music business and we are confident that audiences around the world will embrace it.”

“With Sony now on board, this is another huge milestone to the already resounding success THE LAUNCH has received for its inaugural season,” said Randy Lennox, President, Bell Media. “This partnership reconfirms Bell Media’s commitment to producing high-calibre and innovative programming and a new TV format that we are sure will resonate with viewers around the world.”

“Season 1 of CTV’s THE LAUNCH exceeded our wildest expectations!” said Scott Borchetta, Founder, President, and CEO of the Big Machine Label Group. “We are fired up to announce a worldwide format agreement with Sony Pictures Entertainment. Wow! I’m so grateful to Randy Lennox and all at Bell Media for sharing THE LAUNCH vision from the onset and I’m beyond thrilled to see the format earning the opportunity to travel the world with SPT. The goal from the beginning was to give artists a real-life and real-time opportunity like no other and we appear to have achieved that goal. A huge thanks to all of our Season 1 superstar producers and mentors, our great artists, and the millions of fans who tuned in.”

Based on a concept by Scott Borchetta of Big Machine Label Group, THE LAUNCH was co-created by Borchetta in association with Randy Lennox and Bell Media, and Paul Franklin of Eureka (MASTERCHEF, THE BIGGEST LOSER), in partnership with John Brunton and Lindsay Cox of Insight Productions.

A staggering roster of musical A-listers joined Borchetta as mentors in the Canadian version of THE LAUNCH, including international musical icon and reigning “Queen of Country Pop” Shania Twain; Culture Club alumnus and Grammy Award-winner Boy George; eight-time GRAMMY Award-winning multi-platinum superstar Fergie; Canadian GRAMMY Award-winning singer and songwriter and international pop sensation Alessia Cara; rock icon and founding member of legendary rock band Mötley Crüe Nikki Sixx; Grammy-nominated Best New Artist of the Year Julia Michaels; and Grammy Award-winner and co-founder of country-pop duo Sugarland Jennifer Nettles.

Award-winning producers/songwriters cast alongside Borchetta in the breakout season of THE LAUNCH included OneRepublic’s Ryan Tedder, busbee (P!nk, Shakira, Blake Shelton), Dann Huff (producer behind more than 50 #1 hit records ), Grammy-nominated record producer Ian Kirkpatrick (behind multi-platinum hit songs from Jason Derulo and Selena Gomez), and OSCAR and GRAMMY nominated producer Stephan Moccio, the music mastermind behind massive, inescapable hits like the quintuple-platinum “Wrecking Ball”.

With seven episodes in total, each of the first six episodes kicks off with the introduction of a new original song that has been created by a renowned songwriter. Then, each of the five artists audition for the mentors, for the chance of a lifetime: to record that original song.

After deliberating, the mentors choose two of the artists they feel have the most potential and are the right fit for the original song, working with them over the next 48 hours to shape the song according to their abilities and strengths. And then it’s showtime: the two artists each perform their rendition of the original song in front of a live audience as the mentors watch their versions of the song come to life, and then determine which song – and artist- will be launched that night.

The season wraps with a seventh and final episode that reveals what happens next to each of the six chosen artists from the moment their song is released, to finding instant fame and through until they join their mentors on the music charts. The episode ends with all six “Launched” alumni meeting for the first time to share their once in a lifetime experiences with one another.

The inaugural edition of THE LAUNCH, created for CTV – Canada’s most-watched private broadcaster, premiered on the network January 11, 2018 with each episode’s song released weekly and leveraging the multiple platforms and resources of Bell Media, Canada’s leading content company, including Bell Media Radio, Canada’s largest radio broadcaster, along with the iHeartRadio Canada app and Bell Media’s stable of leading digital and TV properties. Bell Media’s commitment to the chosen artists continues with major media and promotion the day after the episodes air on flagship Bell Media radio and television properties.

Today I found out Joan Baez does a killer impression of Bob Dylan

Today I found out Joan Baez does a killer impression of Bob Dylan. In this clip, Joan Baez is at her home in Northern California informally singing with the great guitarist, Randy Scruggs, who was 16 years old at the time.
