Apple teams with Malala Fund to support girls’ education

0

Apple and Malala Fund today announced that Apple will become the fund’s first Laureate partner, enabling a significant expansion of Malala’s effort to support girls’ education and advocate for equal opportunity. Led by Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Malala Yousafzai, Malala Fund champions every girl’s right to 12 years of free, safe, quality education.

With Apple’s support, Malala Fund expects to double the number of grants awarded by its Gulmakai Network and extend funding programs to India and Latin America with the initial goal of extending secondary education opportunities to more than 100,000 girls.

Apple will help Malala Fund scale its organization by assisting with technology, curriculum and research into policy changes needed to help girls everywhere attend school and complete their education. Tim Cook, Apple’s CEO, will also join the Malala Fund leadership council.

“My dream is for every girl to choose her own future,” said Malala Yousafzai. “Through both their innovations and philanthropy, Apple has helped educate and empower people around the world. I am grateful that Apple knows the value of investing in girls and is joining Malala Fund in the fight to ensure all girls can learn and lead without fear.”

“We believe that education is a great equalizing force, and we share Malala Fund’s commitment to give every girl an opportunity to go to school,” said Tim Cook. “Malala is a courageous advocate for equality. She’s one of the most inspiring figures of our time, and we are honored to help her extend the important work she is doing to empower girls around the world.”

Since 2013, Malala Fund has been working in partnership with other organizations, the private sector and governments around the world to realize every girl’s right to 12 years of free, safe, quality education. The fund’s Gulmakai Network currently supports programs in Afghanistan, Pakistan, Lebanon, Turkey and Nigeria.

With an estimated 130 million girls out of school, the importance of their work is increasingly essential.

Foo Fighters: Concrete And Gold North American Tour 2018 Expanded By Popular Demand

0

Foo Fighters’ Concrete and Gold Tour has added seven new headline dates to its North American itinerary.

The North American leg of the tour supporting the international #1 album Concrete and Gold (Roswell Records/RCA Records) has further expanded its 2018 itinerary with a run of new arena headlines beginning October 8 at Talking Stick Resort Arena in Phoenix AZ and running through October 18 at the XCel Energy Center in St. Paul MN. Tickets for the new dates are on sale to the public as of  Friday, January 26 at 9am Local Time (* with the exception of Detroit, which goes on sale Thursday, January 25 at 11am local time).

Capital One Cardholder and FF Fan Pre-Sale tickets will be available as of Tuesday, January 23 at 10 am local market time. Pre-Sale tickets will be available until Thursday, January 25 at 10 am local market time or until they are sold out. Pre-Sale tickets are limited to (4) tickets per card. While supplies last.

The tireless Foo Fighters have just begun 2018 in style, with their just-underway stadium tour of Australia and New Zealand. The first U.S. leg of the Concrete and Gold Tour wound down 2017 by storming through sold out arenas in Richmond, Greensboro, Cincinnati, Sioux Falls and more, with Foo Fighters consistently reaching new peaks of their estimable powers: The Herald Whig in Champaign IL raved “the energy didn’t slow down at all during the near-three-hour set… If you get the chance, make sure you don’t miss out. You won’t regret it,” and the Argus Leader called the Foos’ first Sioux Falls appearance in decades “musical genius,” reporting that the band “blew away the crowd… pulling off a performance no one in the audience will forget… delivered the classic rock concert their fans know and love.”

Short Cuts: The Best Songs Heard On January 21, 2018 From The Indie World

0

The Lifers
Front Door
led by sisters Liv and Anita Cazzola, this art-folk/rock collective from Guelph, ON should easily find their place on CanCon-driven radio, especially at the folk/world/blues festivals that are meshing into one giant genre onto itself, and that’s a good thing. A bit of Sinead, a touch of Doroles from The Cranberries, and tight rocking guitars make them absolutely one to watch.

Nikö Blank
1, 2, Hello
Out there for his most notable remix to date – Flume “Never Be Like You” Remix, reaching the #1 spot on Hype Machine – he goes on his own this time around. The symphonic strings, energizing drums and sweeping synths show he’s only a few singles away from EDM stardom.

Van Der Neer
Everybody Knows
Back in the 90s, this would be all over MTV with their super-friendly hard-rock pop with a riff Jimmy Page would give a wink towards. A crunchier song than, say, Def Leppard or Bon Jovi would write, but they’d easily take them on as an opener. Let’s hope it happens.

Cassie Marin
Candy
This is a pure glimpse into the superb production, a simple but effective melody and never throwing more than it needs to in the studio. A dreamlike trip into another dimension that works perfectly.

Sure Sure
Giants
From the sunny piano melody to the blustery percussion, the beautiful harmonies peaks alongside their positive lyrics, “Giants celebrates the simple joy of life. Their chorus doesn’t even make it close to over-whimsical, and adds to this glorious track. If you dig Squeeze, this is absolutely for you.

Fly By Night
Complicated (Avril Lavigne cover)
A surprisingly hopping version that stands out and suits Owl City fans nicely. Inside this group is a pop band ready to make their mark alongside The Chainsmokers.

Laice
Independence
Born in Colorado and raised in Cambridge Massachuttes, the young artist and songwriter delivers R&B-tinged-Pop music with power and nuance well beyond her years. She’ll follow in the footsteps of Rihanna across the free world if she continues to deliver.

Nicolas Maul
Haus am See
Nicolas Maul is a German artist living in Frankfurt am Main who publishes exclusively via the internet. His sparce but punchy melodies and guitar will remind you of Franz Ferdinand and will slip into your car-driving song playlist.

Mushroom People
On The Road
From their recent release, On The Road, he song was inspired by electronic artists such as Kasbo and ODESZA. What you hear isn’t a trumpet, but a fluegelhorn, a rare instrument from the bugle family played by Woody Herman, Chet Baker and on Uncle Albert/Admiral Halsey by Paul McCartney and Wings. It’s a dazzling display of the instrument in a song Imagine Dragons would have been proud to write.

The Olympic Symphonium
Comedy
The self-produced video was shot by Fredericton filmmaker F. Chris Giles. Beauty In The Tension comes out February 9 via Forward Music Group. They’ve got a beautiful, smooth, that sails through almost 5 minutes worthy of this big ballad finding a home on the radio. CBC can playlist this now.

Watch Prince Get Even Sexier With Led Zeppelin’s “Whole Lotta Love”

0

Watch Prince perform Led Zeppelin’s Whole Lotta Love on his 2003 home video Live at the Aladdin Las Vegas. In his glorious fashion, he doesn’t perform the entire song, though – he mostly does away with the lyrics after 39 seconds and then goes through the next four minutes with his guitar-playing genius.
