R.E.M.’s “Automatic For The People” Gets A 25th Anniversary 4-Disc Reissue

0

Widely considered to be one of the best albums of the 90s, 1992’s Automatic For The People features R.E.M.’s iconic hit singles “Nightswimming,” “Man on the Moon” and “Everybody Hurts.”

Commemorating the album’s 25th Anniversary, this remastered Deluxe edition boxset features previously unreleased material, including 20 never-before-heard demos, and the previously unreleased tracks “Mike’s Pop Song” and “Devil Rides Backwards.”* A Blu-ray disc offers the full album (with bonus track “Photograph” featuring Natalie Merchant) mixed in Dolby Atmos, plus a high-resolution master of the album, music videos, and the original 1992 EPK. Also included is Live At The 40 Watt Club 11/19/92 – a live set performed in R.E.M.’s hometown of Athens, GA.

The 4-Disc Super Deluxe format includes a brand new remaster of the original album on CD 1, remastered from original analogue tapes by Stephen Marcussen under the direction of original Producer Scott Litt.

CD 2 features live tracks recorded at the band’s 1992 show at The 40 Watt Club in Athens, the year of Automatic For The People’s original release. This was the only concert that R.E.M. performed that year. The highly sort-after & acclaimed recording is remixed from the original multi-tracks by John Keane.

CD 3 presents a completely unreleased treasure-trove of 20 demo versions of all the tracks from the original album + unreleased songs from the recording sessions that didn’t make the record first time around & have been approved by the band for inclusion 25-years on.

A Blu-Ray disc rounds out the package featuring a pioneering Dolby Atmos mix of the album, making Automatic For The People the *first ever commercial album release* to present this immersive 3D sound technology for home consumption & playback. As well as the Dolby Atmos Surround & Hi-Resolution Audio mixes of the album, the Blu-Ray includes all the up-scaled original promo videos & the original Automatic press kit + more!

The four-discs are housed in a bespoke lift-off 12” x 12” boxset which also includes a hard-back book with brand new extended essay by acclaimed MOJO writer Tom Doyle, contributions from all of the band including memorabilia & unseen photos from Anton Corbijn’s album sessions.

A cut-down 2CD set will also be released featuring CD1 (Automatic For The People remastered) & CD2 (Live At The 40 Watt Club) in a rigid clamshell box, 2CDs & booklet.

A new reissue of the original album on 180-gram Heavyweight black vinyl, cut from original analogue tapes at Capitol Studios and download card.

INXS Kick 30th Anniversary Edition Arrives On November 24

0

2017 marks a triumvirate of anniversaries for the legendary Australian rock band INXS. It’s now 40 years since they first formed the band; 30 years since Kick made them global superstars; and 20 years since the untimely passing of their iconic frontman and friend Michael Hutchence. INXS are celebrating these major milestones with a huge suite of CD and vinyl releases, leading off with the 30th anniversary edition of the much-lauded Kick.

Housed in glorious DVD size fan-deluxe packaging, the 30th anniversary edition of Kick extends previous editions with additional B-sides, rare mixes and bonus tracks over 3CDs. In addition, it will feature the album mixed in Dolby Atmos® by producer Giles Martin and Sam Okell at Abbey Road Studios. The new mix appears on a Blu-ray disc along with all the promo videos. Dolby Atmos is an immersive sound technology that delivers the best listening experience on any device with a new dimension of clarity, fidelity and space.

“It is really surreal that 30 years ago when 3 record label companies rejected this album,” says Petrol Records Chairman & CEO, Chris Murphy. “Now, it is revolutionized through the incredible, incredible ATMOS technology through one of my favorite people in the world, Mr. Giles Martin.”

For vinyl enthusiasts, there will also be a Half-Speed Remaster of the classic 1987 album cut over two heavyweight, 180g black vinyl LPs at 45-RPM for supreme fidelity, cut by Abbey Road Studios’ Half-Speed Mastering pioneer, Miles Showell, who says: “Having owned this album since 1987 and even cut the UK 7” lacquers for ‘Need You Tonight’, I was thrilled to be asked to remaster it as a double 45 half-speed mastered LP.” The vinyl release date is February 9.

“Classic, fabulous pop songs that jump out of the speakers, now more than ever before!“ Andrew Farriss of INXS says of Kick’s new edition. “The latest INXS vinyl cuts are an outstanding sonic achievement, especially the Kick album. I was truly amazed to hear INXS’ recordings sounding so incredibly fresh, clear and kick-ass, like vinyl on steroids…”

Originally formed in 1977, INXS’s career spans an extraordinary 40 years, during which they have sold over 40 million records worldwide, including Number 1 albums in four different continents. Delivering an avalanche of hits including “Need You Tonight,” “New Sensation,” “Never Tear Us Apart,” “Devil Inside” and “Mystify,” Kick sold over six million copies worldwide and made INXS one of the biggest bands on the planet.

A force of nature in their prime, the band returned to the top of the Australian charts with the success of 2014 mini-series INXS: Never Tear Us Apart. Ready to turn heads all over again, Kick’s 30th anniversary edition provides the perfect opportunity to get reacquainted with this most timeless and ground-breaking of bands.

Meet Suzanne Ciani, The Woman Who Revolutionised Electronic Music

0

In the 1960s the world of electronic music was dominated by men – and Suzanne Ciani was one of the very few women who started to compose synthesizer music. Her music went on to be used widely in adverts, pin ball machines and influenced many musicians. Suzanne’s early recordings have recently been re-released and brought her a new generation of young fans. Suzanne was born in Boston and started out as a classical pianist. She explained to Matthew Bannister how electronic music first came into her life. A new documentary about her life – A life in Waves – will be out soon.
