Rheostatics’ Dave Bidini Launches New Community Newspaper, The West End Phoenix

0

Today marks the fundraising and subscription launch for the West End Phoenix, a new monthly broadsheet community newspaper for Toronto’s West End. Dreamed up by musician (Rheostatics), writer and soon-to-be-publisher Dave Bidini, the West End Phoenix will be a home-delivered newspaper devoted to telling the stories of a diverse, compelling and quickly evolving catchment, from the Junction Triangle to Parkdale, Christie Pits to Baby Point.

Inspired by a summer working at the Yellowknifer, a vital smalltown paper in the Northwest Territories, Bidini imagined the West End Phoenix – small but mighty, as well as non-profit, ad-free and patron supported – as a way to reflect his own community and to provide a place for the journalists, artists and storytellers who live there to work there, too. Contributors will reflect the broadest range in both experience – from legendary voices to young writers – and perspectives.

Readers of the West End Phoenix will find paper artist Kalpna Patel, writer Michael Healey, journalist Eman Bare, illustrator Jeff Lemire, musician Odario Williams (Grand Analog), photographer Barbara Davidson and novelist Claudia Dey, who, among others, will be drawn mainly from West End neighbourhoods, their views illuminating the catchment and transforming the idea of a community newspaper.

The author of 12 books and the only Canadian to be nominated for a Genie, Gemini and Juno as well as to appear on CBC’s Canada Reads, Bidini is joined by Deputy Editor Melanie Morassutti and Senior Editor Susan Grimbly (both formerly of the Globe and Mail). The West End Phoenix has been offered a residency in the Gladstone Hotel to prepare the first issue, to be published in October 2017, supported by a local paid subscription base and three levels of patronage, accessible at westendphoenix.com. They have an emerging partnership with the Toronto District School Board that will help engage young voices in the community with the intention of publishing them on the broadsheet.

Guided by a board and advisory council that includes The Grid founder Laas Turnbull, writer Margaret Atwood, media consultant Ali Rahnema, J-Source managing editor H.G. Watson, filmmakers Nicholas de Pencier and Jennifer Baichwal, and Women’s March organizer Bianca Spence, the West End Phoenix arrives at a challenging time for print media, but, in the words of publisher Bidini, “I believe that our diverse and wild neighbourhood has the appetite for long-form writing, rich photography and beautiful newsprint, and for the Pet of the Month and some fine comics at the back of the paper, too. We hope the West End Phoenix will become a living document of a time and place, and the voices of that place.”

That Time Jimi Hendrix Opened for The Monkees

0

In the storied summer of 1967, there was an ever-so-brief (and ever-so-strange) combination of two ever-so-different musical icons: The Monkees and Jimi Hendrix. Monkees drummer Micky Dolenz recounts the brief period of time that the legendary guitarist was the opening act for the pop boy-band sensation. While the pairing of the two acts seemed like a good—if novel—idea at the time, that quickly proved not to be the case. Some things just aren’t meant to be…

You oughta know Alanis Morissette’s ‘Jagged Little Pill’ musical gets 2018 debut

0

You oughta know — a stage musical featuring Alanis Morissette‘s Jagged Little Pill is officially a go.

The singer-songwriter’s iconic 1995 album will be the basis of a new production debuting at Cambridge’s American Repertory in May 2018. Directed by Diane Paulus (Waitress), the show will include orchestrations and arrangements by Tom Kitt (Next to Normal) and a book by Diablo Cody, the Oscar-winning screenwriter of Juno who also co-created the series United States of Tara and One Mississippi. It will be Cody’s Broadway debut.

“This team that has come together for this Jagged Little Pill musical is my musical theatre dream come true,” said Morissette in a statement. “The chemistry between all of us is crackling and I feel honored to be diving into these songs again, surrounded by all of this searing talent. Diablo and Diane are already taking these deeply personal songs that are part of my soul’s marrow to a whole other level of hope, freedom and complexity.”

Created by Cody in close creative consultation with Morissette, the show’s storyline revolves around a modern and multi-generational family and their complex dynamics, touching on issues of gender identity and race. Songs from Morissette’s groundbreaking album like “Ironic” and “Hand in My Pocket” will be performed in the musical, which will also feature melodies from the singer’s extensive body of work.

The Tragically Hip Are Now Owners Of A Medicinal Marijuana Grow-Op

0

Veteran esteemed members of the music industry, the forward-thinking guys of The Tragically Hip are now applying their expertise in creating fan-friendly and – quite frankly – doing good in the world for the future – to the hot-button issue of legalized medical cannabis. Only they’re just not putting their signatures on a petition. They just bought at marijuana grow-op. From their website.

Hello Friends,

We are happy to announce that we have become partners with one of Canada’s newest, soon to be public, licensed producers of medicinal marijuana. The company is called Newstrike and, after much discussion and assessment on our part, we’ve decided that this company – and the many creative people in it – are a perfect fit for The Hip.

Medicinal cannabis is legal in Canada, and it already greatly benefits the health and well being of many of our fellow Canadians.

There is a commitment from the Federal Government to legalize recreational use in just over a year, and with good reason. The harm wrought by the prohibition of marijuana has been thoroughly researched and documented.

This is a common-sense-policy and, in our opinion, is a change for the best.

Newstrike has done its due diligence with respect to all aspects of this business. They’ve hired pre-eminent scientists and growers, developed large, well-structured sites and have the wherewithal and expertise to take this on.

We are excited about our involvement with Newstrike and are looking forward to the prospect of contributing creatively to their efforts.

More to come,

Foreigner Announces 40th Anniversary Canadian Tour Dates and Forthcoming Musical “Juke Box Hero”

0

“I Want To Know What Love Is.” “Cold As Ice.” “Hot Blooded.” “Juke Box Hero.”

FOREIGNER, the band behind these and other classic and iconic songs, is turning 40 this year and celebrating with a Canadian tour, 40th Anniversary Album, and new musical; Juke Box Hero, premiering in Alberta sometime in 2018.

Foreigner’s 10-city Canadian tour is set to launch in Calgary, AB on October 11th, and trek across Western Canada as the band – Mick Jones (lead guitar), Kelly Hansen (lead vocals), Jeff Pilson (bass, vocals), Tom Gimbel (rhythm guitar, sax, vocals), Michael Bluestein (keyboards), Bruce Watson (guitar) and Chris Frazier (drums) – bring Foreigner’s arsenal of hits to Canada. Tickets go on sale June 2nd, 2017 at www.jeffparrypromotions.com/foreigner.

This tour will feature a companion album, a new career-spanning compilation titled 40 that features 40 hits from 40 years. RHINO will release 40 on May 26th as a double-CD set that includes 40 songs recorded between 1977 and 2017. A double-vinyl version that features 23 songs will be released on June 2.  40 brings together the best songs from Foreigner’s nine studio albums, including all 16 of its Top 30 hits: “Feels Like The First Time,” “Urgent,” “Waiting For A Girl Like You” and more. The collection features “Too Late” from the group’s 2008 retrospective No End In Sight and “The Flame Still Burns,” the title track from a vinyl EP released just last year, making its debut on CD in this collection. All prior recordings have been remastered and the album features two new tracks recorded especially for this release, “Give My Life For Love” and a new version of “I Don’t Want To Live Without You.”

Another milestone as part of Foreigner’s 40th Anniversary celebration is the announcement of the forthcoming musical, Juke Box Hero, premiering in Alberta in 2018. Based on the screenplay written by the prolific writing duo, Dick Clement and Ian La Frenais, responsible for films The Commitments and Across The Universe, and The Tracey Ullman TV Show, Juke Box Hero is a coming of age saga written to the music of Foreigner.

“I never could have imagined when I set out to create Foreigner forty years ago, that we’d still be touring around the world and performing the music we love all these years later,” says founding member and lead guitarist Mick Jones. “I am so proud that these songs will now be reinterpreted for stage, and am honored by the team that is helping bring this music to life. I can’t express the gratitude I feel when fans share stories of how our songs have been woven into their milestones and memories over the years.  I had so many great times with Foreigner in Canada and I look forward to bringing the band back here for our 40th anniversary tour.  I’m thrilled that Canada will see the premiere of our brand new musical, Juke Box Hero, in 2018.”

Since the 1977 release of their first hit “Feels Like The First Time” and their self-titled debut album on Atlantic Records, FOREIGNER has been universally hailed as one of the world’s most popular rock acts with 10 multi-platinum albums, 16 Top 30 hits, and worldwide album sales exceeding 75 million.  Responsible for some of rock and roll’s most enduring anthems including “Juke Box Hero,” “Cold as Ice,” “Feels Like The First Time,” “Urgent,” “Head Games,” “Say You Will,” “Dirty White Boy,” “Long, Long Way From Home,” and the worldwide #1 hit, “I Want To Know What Love Is,” FOREIGNER continues to rock the charts more than thirty years into the game.

Recent albums including Juke Box Heroes, a new compilation of digitally recorded Foreigner hits, and The Best of Foreigner 4 & More, recorded live from The Borgata, Atlantic City, both entered the Billboard Top 200 chart. Foreigner also featured strongly in every category in Billboard’s recently released “Greatest of All Time” listing.  Catalog sales often eclipse those of Aerosmith, The Rolling Stones, The Who, Def Leppard, Van Halen and most of their Classic Rock peers (Source: Nielsen SoundScan 2/11/16 – 2/3/16).
