Midge Ure Returns To North America This Week And Announces More Dates For 2017

0

Grammy and Brit Award winning musician Midge Ure returns to North America this week, playing with a full band for the first time since the Retro Futura Tour in 2014. Playing along with Midge will be former Right the Stars drummer BC Taylor and L.A. based keyboard player Tony Solis “I have been fortunate enough to meet up with some brilliant American musicians over the last few years and will be working with a couple of them on this tour. Both are multi instrumentalists and will cover drums, bass and electronics” Richard Lloyd from Television will support on select dates.

This run of dates will be mosty East Coast with West Coast dates planned for early 2017. Last year saw Ure playing acoustic on the Fragile Troubadour Tour not only playing but traveling completely solo and recording the whole experience himself for a documentary released late last year. The film highlights the realities facing the modern touring musician. Ure explains how the idea came to be: “After I was asked to do a masterclass at Paul McCartney’s Liverpool Institute of Performing Arts I realised that talking about multi album record deals and world tours would be something most of the students would never experience so I set about doing the six week tour completely alone. No crew. No tour manager. No musicians. I wanted to show the reality of what they might face, if they pursue a career in the current music industry.”

Midge will be performing Ultravox, Visage and solo material as well as playing songs from his highly acclaimed album Fragile, released in 2014. Very much plugged in, this tour features Ure on electric guitar and synthesizer recalling the groundbreaking, innovative sound he is known for.

Ure is constantly in the studio when breaks in touring allows working on new material with hopes for a new full-length album to be done by late next year. He has also contributed a song for the accompanying album to the movie ‘Fly’ about the Olympic ski underdog Eddie the Eagle released in the UK and US earlier this year. The song Touching Hearts and Skies while contemporary is steeped in the essence of the early 80’s Ultravox/Visage sound.

Midge has also just appeared in a new highly acclaimed BBC TV show looking for ‘part time’ bands, exploring unsigned bands who perform just for the she joy of it. He travelled across Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales with a film crew choosing artists to perform at a concert in Manchester where the audience would select their favorite band. New Order’s Peter Hook and Soul to Soul’s Jazzy B covered other parts of the UK. Unlike other ‘talent shows’ there is no record deal, music equipment or blank cheques awarded. The prize is appearing on the show and the platform it gives them.

Another recent UK happening saw Midge reunite with some old friends…After meeting up with old Rich Kids bandmate ex Sex Pistol Glen Matlock at the prestigious Q Awards the pair decided to get together with drummer Rusty Egan and do a ‘one off’ show to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the birth of UK punk. The band performed the London show with Spandau Ballets Gary Kemp helping out on guitar.

He was also one of the principle creators of Live Aid and Live 8 along with Bob Geldof. Ure has spent most of his career touring the globe most recently with Ultravox who reformed in 2009 as well as some solo shows and the notable role of MD for the Princes Trust at the Royal Albert Hall with a cast of the usual suspects including Queen, Eric Clapton, Phil Collins and Mark King.

Midge’s Autobiography ‘If I Was’is now also available as an E-Book (narrated by the man himself!) available here.

Rick Astley Returns To Canada For First Show In 25 Years

0

Rick Astley, the iconic singer with one of music’s most distinctive voices, will release “50,” his first new album in a decade and his first official North American release since 1993’s “Body & Soul,” on October 7.

“50” already has Rick atop the charts again, debuting at #1 on the Official Album Chart in the UK in June, in a remarkable return for the artist.  Rick wrote, produced and performed all of the instruments on this new 12-track collection, the title a nod to Rick’s milestone age.  “50” finds Rick returning to his musical roots, with a deeply resonant voice that soars over driving soul, reflective pop and gospel influences.

Rick and his band will tour North America in October, with a Canadian show set for October 9 at the Phoenix in Toronto.

The first pieces of ‘50’ appeared in early 2015, as Rick started penning new songs and structuring them in his home studio.  With encouragement from old friends in the music industry he set forth on crafting this 12-song collection.  Lead single “Keep Singing,” which has over 2 million views on YouTube, is a bold opening salvo: a powerful anthem that the BBC says “gives younger artists like John Newman and Sam Smith a run for their money.”  The propulsive “This Old House” features a taut dance groove, a fuzzed bass line and quick, punctuated funk riffs.  “Angels On My Side” is another powerful ode complete with joyful call and response choruses.

Says Rick: “‘50’ marks both a new chapter in my journey as an artist, and a return to the music I first fell in love with. I could not be more excited to share it with my fans, and take these songs, that have been years in the making, out of the studio and onto the stage.”

Rick has left an indelible mark on pop-culture.  With over 40 million records sold, and a catalog of hits, Astley remains one of the most successful solo artists to have emerged from the United Kingdom, holding the distinction of being the first male solo artist to see his first eight singles reach the UK Top Ten.  Born in Lancashire, Rick was just 21 years old when “Never Gonna Give You Up” became the major hit of 1987.  The single hit number one in 16 countries and propelled his debut album ‘Whenever You Need Somebody’ to worldwide sales of 15 million.  Rick returned with new work in the early 2000’s and began touring again to acclaim and sold-out shows across the globe.

Rick has unveiled two music videos for songs from the album, “Keep Singing” and “Angels On My Side”:

Bob Dylan to Release New 1966 Live Recordings as 36-Disc Set (!!!)

0

Bob Dylan: The 1966 Live Recordings –a highly-collectible 36CD box set containing every known recording from the artist’s groundbreaking 1966 concert tours of the US, UK, Europe and Australia – will be released on Friday, November 11 by Columbia Records and Legacy Recordings, the catalog division of Sony Music Entertainment. The 1966 Live Recordings commemorates, in stunning sonic vérité, the 50th anniversary of the electrifying live performances that would forever change the sound and direction of rock and pop music around the world.

“While doing the archival research for The Cutting Edge 1965-1966: The Bootleg Series Vol. 12, last year’s box set of Dylan’s mid-60s studio sessions, we were continually struck by how great his 1966 live recordings really are,” said Adam Block, President, Legacy Recordings. “The intensity of Bob’s live performances and his fantastic delivery of these songs in concert add another insightful component in understanding and appreciating the musical revolution Bob Dylan ignited some 50 years ago.”

Meticulously researched, curated and restored for this extraordinary collection, Bob Dylan: The 1966 Live Recordings is drawn from three main audio sources: soundboards, CBS Records mobile recordings and audience tapes. With the exception of the Manchester concert (May 17, 1966) released as Bob Dylan Live 1966 – The Bootleg Series Vol. 4 (Columbia/Legacy) in 1998, a pair of songs appearing on the 1985 Biograph compilation and a smattering of others, the overwhelming majority of tracks and performances on Bob Dylan: The 1966 Live Recordings are previously unreleased in any format–official or bootlegged–and are being made available now for the very first time.

All the songs on The 1966 Live Recordings were written by Bob Dylan (vocal, guitar, piano, harmonica) with the sole exception of “Baby, Let Me Follow You Down,” a traditional song arranged by Bob Dylan for concert performance. Dylan is accompanied on these recordings by Robbie Robertson (guitar), Rick Danko (bass, backing vocals), Richard Manuel (piano), Garth Hudson (organ) and Mickey Jones (drums). (Sandy Konikoff plays drums on the White Plains and Pittsburgh shows only.)

Liner notes for Bob Dylan: The 1966 Live Recordings have been provided by Clinton Heylin, a consultant on the project and author of JUDAS!: From Forest Hills to the Free Trade Hall: A Historical View of Dylan’s Big Boo, the definitive written account of Dylan’s historic and pivotal 1965-66 world tours.

Each of the individual CDs in Bob Dylan: The 1966 Live Recordings is housed in a custom sleeve featuring stills from color film shot by D.A. Pennebaker, whose footage from Dylan’s 1965 and 1966 tours became the cinéma vérité classics Dont Look Back (1965) and Eat The Document(1966).

Columbia/Legacy will also release Bob Dylan’s performance at the Royal Albert Hall from May 26, 1966 (two days after the artist’s 25 birthday) as an album entitled The Real Royal Albert Hall 1966 Concert. For decades, Dylan’s performance in Manchester was incorrectly labeled “The Royal Albert Hall Concert.” Now, for the first time, the REAL Royal Albert Hall concert–originally recorded for a live album by CBS Records–is finally being released, mixed by Grammy-winning engineer Chris Shaw. The Real Royal Albert Hall 1966 Concert will be released as a 2CD and 12″ 2LP collection on November 25.

The performances on Bob Dylan: The 1966 Live Recordings put a fiery exclamation point on Dylan’s great mid-sixties creative epoch that produced–in an 18-month span–Bringing It All Back Home, Highway 61 Revisited and Blonde On Blonde, the trilogy of album masterpieces which secured Dylan’s reputation as a songwriter and performer of unprecedented depth, power and originality while significantly impacting the course of popular music and culture. These concert recordings from the same period document Dylan’s evolution as an on-stage phenomenon whose transformative vision saw no limits.

Bob Dylan: The 1966 Live Recordings is the ideal concert companion to The Cutting Edge 1965-1966: The Bootleg Series Vol. 12, released on Columbia/Legacy last November.

In 2005, the live entertainment division was spun off as Live Nation.

“Incredible” Album At The Ready, Says Tears For Fears

That new album from Tears for Fears? “It’s incredible,” shared Roland Orzabal. “We’ve been at it four years, and we had to take a pause this year because of family illness, but now the herpes has cleared up, and we’re good to go,” he joked.

And how about that time they heard Everybody Wants To Rule The World hit #1 in the US? “I had a terrible headache,” Orzabal said. “Our manager from England rang up and said, ‘Oh, by the way, you’re #1 in America,’ and I said, ‘I don’t care. I’ve got a headache.'”

Robert Plant Joins North American Lampedusa: Concerts for Refugees Tour

0

Five of America’s most popular musical acts are coming together for an 11-stop concert tour this fall to raise awareness of the unprecedented worldwide refugee crisis. Lampedusa: Concerts for Refugees will be headlined in North America by Grammy Award-winning artists Emmylou Harris, Steve Earle, Patty Griffin, Buddy Miller, and The Milk Carton Kids. However, a sixth performer has just been added for select dates, including Toronto – Robert Plant.

Jesuit Refugee Service (JRS) announced today that it will host this singer/songwriter tour in support of the organization’s Global Education Initiative, which was commissioned by Pope Francis. JRS seeks to double the number of refugees served in its educational programs by 2020.

“After witnessing firsthand the work of JRS in Ethiopia this past June, I have never been more inspired to champion such a critical cause,” said Emmylou Harris, 13-time Grammy winning artist. “The better angels of our nature call upon us to act with compassion and not with fear in the face of so much suffering.”

In an effort to shed light on the plight of the more than 65 million refugees worldwide and the need to raise funds to support refugee education, Plant offered this statement about joining the tour.

“I’m taking a break from recording the new Sensational Space Shifters record to be a part of this very important and worthwhile cause. When I watch the news and see people from these places being displaced by hatred and ignorance, I know that these people are just like you and me. All they want is to live in peace and have their children grow up loved, fed and educated. That seems a million miles away for many people at the moment. They are living in refugee camps, in conditions that are far below sustenance levels. When I heard that some of my friends were rallying to do a series of concerts to help raise funds and awareness, to help address the basic needs of food, shelter and medical care, I wanted to help, in whatever way I could. One thing that I want to make clear: as with all the other members of this tour, I will be performing two or three songs a night and no more. I’m not making a political statement. The organization that is receiving these funds is a religious one. This appeal is trying to help on the ground wherever it can. I hope that my voice, along with my friends, helps bend the arc of the universe a little more toward the loving and helps with the work of getting the basic essentials of life to those who are without.”

The complete tour dates are below. The shows featuring Plant are noted.

October 6 – Boulder Theater in Boulder, CO
October 8 – Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts in Kansas City, MO
October 9 – Rococo Theater in Lincoln, NE
October 11 – Sheldon Concert Hall, St. in Louis, MO
October 12 – Pabst Theater in Milwaukee, WI w/Robert Plant
October 13 – Vic Theater in Chicago, IL w/ Robert Plant
October 14 – Massey Hall in Toronto, ON w/Robert Plant
October 16 – Berklee Perfomance Center in Boston, MA ) w/Robert Plant
October 18 – The Town Hall in New York, NY w/Robert Plant
October 19 – Merriam Theater in Philadelphia, PA w/Robert Plant
October 21 – Lisner Auditorium in Washington, DC w/Robert Plant

Everyone’s journey begins somewhere – and for some that journey includes Lampedusa, an Italian island off the coast of Sicily that serves as a waypoint in a refugee’s search for safety and security.

JRS works in more than 45 countries worldwide to meet the educational, health, social and other needs of many of these refugees and other forcibly displaced persons. The scale of this humanitarian crisis is staggering: one in every 122 people is a refugee. More than half are women and children; at least 30 million are under the age of 18.

“We are ready to bring this critical issue to the stage and help people understand that education provides a path forward in life for refugees,” said Fr. Timothy P. Kesicki S.J., the President of the Jesuit Conference of Canada and the United States. “Most people don’t realize that refugees spend an average of 20 years displaced from their homes and many never return. It’s time to take action and our Lampedusa concert tour will help us do so.”

Michael Williams Presents SUNDAY NIGHT is thrilled to present a return engagement by R&B singer/songwriter Liberty Silver and award winning producer Eddie Bullen, Sunday October 16, 2016 at Taste of Colombia’s El Salon.

Back by popular demand, Liberty Silver and Eddie Bullen return to El Salon to fill us with song once again.

Liberty Silver made history in 1985 when she became the first black woman to win not only one, but two Junos. That night she walked away with two awards for Best Reggae/Calypso Recording and Best R&B/Soul Recording. From the young girl who started crooning at the age of three to opening for Bob Marley and the Wailers at Madison Square Garden (MSG) with Toronto reggae band The Wild Bunch, Silver has gone on to co-write the themes for the 1996 and 2000 Olympics and, since MSG, has opened for The Temptations, B.B. King and Harry Belafonte.

One of Silver’s Juno award winning songs,”Lost Somewhere Inside Your Love” was produced by Eddie Bullen. Throughout his career, Bullen has produced over 150 albums, working with Caribbean, Canadian and American artists such as Melba Moore, David Rudder, Deborah Cox, Anslem Douglas (Who Let The Dogs Out) and of course, Liberty Silver. His smooth Caribbean-influenced jazz/soul records have won awards and recognition around the world. It’s been years since Silver and Bullen have worked together. June 26th brings them together once again for a special, intimate live performance. It will be a special night indeed.

Gord Deppe of The Spoons and Bill Wood announce acoustic show in Oakville

Michael Williams Presents SUNDAY NIGHT is excited to host two exceptional performers — Gord Deppe of The Spoons and Bill Wood of Bill Wood and The Woodies together in a live, acoustic performance on Sunday, October 2, 2016 at Taste of Colombia’s El Salon in Oakville, ON.

With almost 40 years as a singer/songwriter/performer with the The Spoons, Gord Deppe and his band have never stopped performing. Originally from Burlington, Ontario The Spoons were formed in 1979 and, at the time, considered leaders in the New Wave scene during the 1980s. Over the years the band produced hits such as “Romantic Traffic”, “Old Emotions”, “Nova Heart” and “Tell No Lies”. Their most recent album (and the first in 20 years), Static in Transmission, produced two more singles, “Imperfect” and “Tell No Lies”. Deppe will be joining us for an acoustic evening of song and to share the stories behind his latest venture, a new book that actually started years ago as small vignettes and grew over time into SpoonFed.

Singer/songwriter Bill Wood is the front man for Bill Wood and The Woodies. With over 30 years of experience in the music industry his songs have been honed over decades of life experiences. To Wood, the songs are the main event. Wood is also the former lead vocalist of the Juno-nominated pop band Eye Eye.
