The Tragically Hip’s Sales Have Gone Through The Roof

0

In the wake of the grim news last week that Tragically Hip frontman and lyricist Gord Downie has been diagnosed with terminal cancer, the band’s sales have soared.

According to Nielsen Canada SoundScan data, album sales for the band went from 340 last week to over 5,000 in the week, with their ’05 best-of album Yer Favourites re-entering the Billboard Canadian Albums consumption chart at #6 with 4,500 consumption units which combines sales, streams and track sales.

The album also places at #1 on the Catalogue albums chart with 2,500 album sales. Three more albums place in the Top 200: Fully Completely–at 90, Road Apples at 137 and Up To Here at 165.

Track sales from the band’s catalogue leap from 1,400 to over 15,000 in the week, including eight in the top 200 Digital Songs chart. On-Demand streams increased from over 400,000 in the previous week to well over two million–and exposure on radio increased by 28 percent.

Watch These Kids Play Star Wars Theme. With Lightsabers. Wait…What?

Oh, and they play the theme with lightsabers. That is all.

This Goodbye Letter From Dog Owner Will Have You In Tears

0

The Animal Rescue Site is an excellent resource, and also allows pet owners to share their heartwarming rescue stories, and recently letter had me in tears, this post took a lot longer to do, and it was just copy and paste.

When I first adopted you, I whispered to you “You gotta live forever, ‘kay?” Over the years when I would imagine life without you, I would say again to you “You gotta live forever, ‘kay?”

My body still wants to take you for a walk. Your leash still hangs by the door waiting for the words “wanna go outside?” It’s been raining a lot this week and I instinctively look at the clock to see if it’s near time to take you out.

Whenever I eat some crackers or chips, I look to see where you are so I can throw you some.

You were the perfect dog for me. So quiet…so calm. You never peed or chewed on anything. You barked so infrequently that you would scare yourself when you did.

You were with me through all the good times and the bad. You never judged me, even when I weighed 200 lbs and was sweating to the oldies. You always had a wag of the tail for me.

I loved how I could always trust you with any child. When you got older and a little more grey in the face, some of the neighbor kids started calling you Granny.

Even when you could no longer chew the hard kibble and you weren’t so interested in your toys, and had to be walked more often, I loved you so much.

You trusted me right up to the end. You believed me when I told you that you didn’t have to live forever and it’s OK to go.

I felt the life leave your body and you took a piece of me with you.

I love you sweet Jessie girl, and I’ll see you at the bridge. 1998 – 2016

World Wildlife Fund Canada to host inaugural Pandamonium fundraiser on June 23

0

Toronto’s philanthropic society and wildlife lovers are invited to World Wildlife Fund Canada’s first ever Pandamonium party on Thursday, June 23 at Andrew Richard Designs (571 Adelaide Street E.). Funds raised will help WWF-Canada continue its work protecting wildlife and wild places across Canada.

“Pandamonium provides financial support and raises ‎awareness about critical issues that face us now and in the future,” said David Miller, president and CEO of WWF-Canada. “Since the 1970s, our planet’s wildlife populations have declined by 52 per cent. But environmental organizations receive less than 3 per cent of all charitable donations in Canada. So this fundraiser is a critical part of our efforts to deliver on our conservation goals.”

With the theme of Doom & Bloom, Pandamonium will celebrate the majesty and resilience of nature. Throughout the event, guests will experience a journey of the senses, including a live performance from Juno Award-winning indie folk-rock group The Strumbellas, an immersive multimedia experience by internationally renowned digital masterminds Moment Factory, food stations catered by top chefs, complimentary drinks and much more.

Pandamonium is an evolution of WWF-Canada’s annual fundraising gala Panda Ball, which brought together members of Canada’sphilanthropic and business communities leading the next generation of conservation. WWF thanks the Royal Bank of Canada for its longtime support of Panda Ball and generosity as presenting sponsor of Pandamonium.

Tickets to Pandamonium are available for $200. VIP tickets, $400 each, include a pre-party cocktail reception featuring a one-of-a-kind interactive wildlife encounter, an intimate performance from international opera star Teiya Kasahara, a VIP gift bag, a complimentary ticket to WWF-Canada’s summer party and more. Corporate ticket packages are also available. Visit here to purchase tickets online.

Van Morrison’s ..IT’S TOO LATE TO STOP NOW…VOLUMES II, III, IV & DVD Gets A Remaster. One Of The Great Shows, Ever

0

One of the greatest live sets ever, Van Morrison’s ..IT’S TOO LATE TO STOP NOW… is getting a remaster and released as VOLUMES II, III, IV & DVD on Friday, June 10.

A 3CD/1DVD collection of previously unreleased live concert recordings from Morrison’s mythic 1973 tour with the Caledonia Soul Orchestra, ..IT’S TOO LATE TO STOP NOW…VOLUMES II, III, IV & DVD collates peak performances originally recorded at three venues: The Troubadour in Los Angeles, the Santa Monica Civic Center, and The Rainbow Theatre in London. The set’s DVD features professionally-lensed live footage from the Rainbow Theatre, which originally aired on the BBC in the UK and is now available for the first time as a commercial home video release.

Often cited as one of the best live albums ever made, Van Morrison’s original ..IT’S TOO LATE TO STOP NOW… has been remastered in 24-bit high resolution sound and will be available in both 2CD and 2LP configurations, creating the first vinyl pressing of the album in more than 25 years plus availability of the album to hi-res partners (Mastered for iTunes, HD Tracks, Pono).

Morrison’s highly acclaimed 1973 concert album was compiled from eight sets of live performances–recorded at The Troubadour, the Santa Monica Civic Center and The Rainbow Theatre–and was notably free of any post-performance overdubs or studios “fixes”. ..IT’S TOO LATE TO STOP NOW…VOLUMES II, III, IV & DVD returns to those original performances, first captured on two-inch 16-track analog tapes, and, through the mastery of noted engineer Guy Massey, puts the contemporary listener in the enviable position of being sonically present at each venue. All of the recordings on the new collection have been previously unavailable and none of them overlap with the performances on “Volume I” of ..IT’S TOO LATE TO STOP NOW….

“I am getting more into performing,” said Van Morrison in 1973, during his tour with his newly-formed Caledonia Soul Orchestra. “It’s incredible…. All of a sudden I felt like ‘you’re back into performing’ and it just happened like that…. A lot of times in the past I’ve done gigs and it was rough to get through them. But now the combination seems to be right and it’s been clicking a lot.”

Morrison’s 1973 tour found the Irish soul singer at the peak of his powers, returning to the stage to deliver scorching definitive renditions of the signature material comprising his catalog at the time, from the R&B/rock roots of THEM to the haunting folk soul of Astral Weeks and Moondance in songs like “Gloria,” “Into The Mystic,” “Warm Love,” “Domino” and more. Accompanied by the 11-piece Caledonia Soul Orchestra, featuring two horn players and a four-piece string section, Van Morrison set a new standard for live performance while ..IT’S TOO LATE TO STOP NOW… raised the bar on what was possible on a concert recording.

Each disc on ..IT’S TOO LATE TO STOP NOW…VOLUMES II, III, IV & DVD features previously unreleased performances, newly remixed from the original multitrack recordings by Guy Massey (the acclaimed engineer behind the remasters of The Beatles and Paul McCartney). Massey’s new mixes recreate the sonic atmosphere of each venue, from the standing-room-only intimacy of The Troubadour to the expansive excitement filling the 3,000-seat Rainbow Theatre.

Born June 22, 1936 in Brownsville, Texas, Kristoffer (“Kris”) Kristofferson has been an active force in the entertainment industry for the past half century. An influential singer/songwriter who changed the contours of American country music with the lyrical insight and penetrating honesty of his songs, a US Army veteran (who served from 1960-1965, achieving the rank of Captain) and former Oxford University Rhodes Scholar who won a Golden Globes Best Actor Award (for his starring role opposite Barbra Streisand in the 1976 movie smash “A Star Is Born”), Kris Kristofferson is both a multi-faceted artist and a bonafide American icon.

A musician whose sound bridges the worlds of country, folk, rock and gospel, Kristofferson is one of the sonic architects of the American outlaw country movement. Having written and recorded such hit songs as “Me and Bobby McGee,” “For the Good Times,” “Sunday Mornin’ Comin’ Down,” “Help Me Make It Through the Night” and many others, Kris Kristofferson is among the most influential and admired musicians in the world, with a body of work that spans the late 20th and early 21st centuries. In 1985, he united with fellow outlaw country artists Willie Nelson, Johnny Cash and Waylon Jennings to form The Highwaymen, the world’s first country music “supergroup.” He was induced into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2004.

Kristofferson wrote his first songs while studying at Merton College at Oxford University, hoping the craft of songwriting would further his goal of becoming a novelist. While in England, he cut his first records as “Kris Carson” for the Top Rank Records label. This early foray into the music industry proved unsuccessful. Graduating Oxford with a master’s degree in English literature in 1960, Kristofferson eventually relocated to Nashville, Tennessee, where he began to ply his trade as a songwriter while working as a series of other jobs including helicopter pilot, oil rig operator (in Louisiana) and janitor at Columbia Recording Studios.

By 1967, Kristofferson had signed with Epic Records, who released an unsuccessful single, “Golden Idol”/”Killing Time”. Meanwhile, Kris Kristofferson-penned songs were hitting the charts, performed by other artists including Roy Drusky (“Jody and the Kid”); Billy Walker & the Tennessee Walkers (“From the Bottle to the Bottom”); Ray Stevens (“Sunday Mornin’ Comin’ Down”); Jerry Lee Lewis (“Once More with Feeling”); Faron Young (“Your Time’s Comin'”); and Roger Miller (“Me and Bobby McGee”, “Best of all Possible Worlds”, and “Darby’s Castle”). Kris started to achieve attention as a performer in his own right, especially after being introduced on-stage at the Newport Folk Festival by Johnny Cash.

Signed as a recording artist to Monument Records by the prescient Fred Foster, Kristofferson saw his eponymous debut album released in 1970. The album, Kristofferson, included newly written originals as well as some of Kris’s most familiar hits for other artists; re-released as Me & Bobby McGee a year later, the collection put Kris Kristofferson front and center in the worlds of popular and country music. Ray Price’s recording of “For the Good Times” helped the composition win the Academy of Country Music’s Song of the Year in 1970 while Johnny Cash’s version of “Sunday Mornin’ Comin’ Down” secured the Song of the Year award that same year from the Country Music Association. Kris Kristofferson’s double win for Song of the Year in 1970 marked the only time a single individual has ever achieved the same award–from Country Music’s two competing professional guilds–in the same year for two different songs.

In 1971, Janis Joplin’s definitive recording of “Me and Bobby McGee” became a #1 hit and remains a radio perennial to this day. While a string of Kristofferson songs became hits for other artists–Ray Price (“I’d Rather Be Sorry”); Joe Simon (“Help Me Make It Through the Night”); Bobby Bare (“Please Don’t Tell Me How the Story Ends”); O.C. Smith (“Help Me Make It Through the Night”); Jerry Lee Lewis (“Me and Bobby McGee”); Patti Page (“I’d Rather Be Sorry”); Peggy Little (“I’ve Got to Have You”) and Kenny Rogers (“Me and Bobby McGee”), Kristofferson solidified his position as a recordings artist with the release of The Silver Tongued Devil and I in 1971. He swept the Grammys in 1971 with several nominations, winning Country Song of the Year for “Help Me Make It Through the Night.”
