Fest300 Announces 2016 List of World’s Top 300 Festivals

0

Fest300, the most comprehensive guide to the world’s best festivals, announced today its annual list of the 300 most highly regarded festivals from around the globe. Making this year’s list were returning favorites Glastonbury (Pilton, UK), Diwali (India), and Envision (Costa Rica), as well as list newcomers Electric Zoo (New York, USA) and Cape Town International Jazz Fest (South Africa).

Fest300’s complete list can be found here: https://www.fest300.com/festivals.

“Fest300 was created to inspire cultural curiosity and to encourage people to attend new festivals around the world,” says Fest300 Creative Director Eamon Armstrong. “We have since evolved into the online destination uniting the global community of attendees, artists and festival producers through thought-leading editorial and awe-inspiring video and photography. We believe that this year’s expertly curated list, including crowdsourced recommendations from our international audience, brings to life the vibrant experience unique to each festival for both the practical and aspirational festival-goer.”

“It’s clear that our mission of showcasing festivals to inspire the culturally curious adventurer in all of us is right for its time,” states Fest300 co-founder Chip Conley. “This is a movement, and an economically important one at that. According to Nielsen, a staggering 32 million people attend at least one music festival in the U.S. each year. Those attendees travel over 900 miles on average.  And over 10 million U.S. music festival attendees visit more than one festival each year.  Those are big numbers for the travel and entertainment sectors, and also the wider economy.”

As the ultimate authority on the world’s music and culture festivals, the Fest300 team reviewed over 1,000 revered festivals to curate the final list. This year, Fest300’s list is 53% music-focused with 25% growth in electronic music, which went from 18% of the list in 2015 to 22% in 2016. Per the site’s tradition, 30 festivals previously included on the annual list were removed, and the final 30 festivals were selected by festivalgoers via crowdsourcing campaign, Fest300’s Best Fest Quest, held in November.

Can Music Out Loud Change The Way We Connect At Home?

0

Today Sonos released the findings of a worldwide study that shows the transformative power of listening to music out loud at home. The Music Makes it Home Study found that listening to music out loud leads to stronger relationships, more intimacy, happier families and more quality time spent together. According to the study, people who listen to music out loud at home the most spend an additional three hours and 13 minutes per week together with their household members than those who listen out loud the least.

“For years, Sonos owners have been telling us amazing stories about how music has transformed their houses into homes,” saidJohn MacFarlane, Sonos Chief Executive Officer. “The challenge has been to capture the transformation in science. Now we have an innovative approach to understanding the benefits of music in the home.”

The Music Makes it Home Study was a two-part endeavor designed to better understand if playing music throughout a home can change the way we connect. In the first phase, Sonos asked 30,000 people across eight countries about music and their relationships at home. The second phase was a unique experiment that tracked what happens when people play music out loud in their homes.

“The truth is people may be sharing a home, but they aren’t sharing much else. Music may be able to change that by bringing everyone back together,” said Dr. Daniel J. Levitin, neuroscientist, musician and author of the international bestselling book This is Your Brain on Music. “This study takes an important step forward in showing how listening to music out loud can enhance relationships at home.”

The findings of include:

  • Musical homes have more romance. People who say they listen to music out loud together the most have 67 percent more sex,and almost a quarter of people would give up sex before music according to survey data.
  • Our study shows that listening to music out loud can lead to more happiness. After music was introduced in the home, 43 percent of participants reported feeling extremely loved, an 87 percent increase from before there was music at home.
  • Boring things can become more fun. In our survey, 83 percent believe doing chores is easier when listening to music.
  • 50 percent of respondents enjoy cooking more while listening to music. This was underlined in the experiment, where we could see an increase in the time spent together in the kitchen by 20 percent.

Participant homes in the experiment ranged from roommates and married couples to multi-generational families, as well as couples living together for the first time. Using iPhones, Apple Watches, iBeacons and motion-activated cameras, a variety of data was collected, including daily video journals that provided insight into how music transformed the homes.

The “Music Makes it Home” Study was a global study compromised of a 30,000 respondent digital survey using a representative sample from panels provided by Survey Sampling International. The survey was conducted between December 29, 2015 and January 8, 2016 in the United States, Canada, Australia, United Kingdom, Netherlands, Sweden, Germany and France. The in-home study was conducted in 30 homes across the same markets that were pre-screened and selected based on baseline criteria that they lived with at least one other person, had access to high-speed Internet at home and did not previously own Sonos. Participants were asked to live one week without music and one week with Sonos and streaming music between January 13, 2016 and January 29, 2016. Data was collected via Apple Watches, iPhones, iBeacon and motion-activated cameras. More information on the design and methodology of the in-home study is available at www.musicmakesithome.com.

Jessica Williams Gets It Right Defending Beyoncé’s Halftime Performance

0

The Daily Show correspondent Jessica Williams had some words of wisdom for people who thought Beyoncé’s performance during the Super Bowl halftime show was too much because of its themes of black empowerment. Toronto City Counsellor Jim Karygiannis, in an interview with The Toronto Sun, the former Member of Parliament thinks the Canadian government should investigate Beyoncé and her backup dancers for any ties to the Black Panther Party. “Perhaps Immigration Minister John McCallum should have her investigated first? If someone wore bullets and supported (a radical group) here, they would not be welcomed in the United States—that’s for sure,” Karygiannis told Sun columnist Joe Warmington. “She or some of them could be found not eligible to enter the country as others in the past have faced.”

The Canadian Border Services Agency can deny entry based on issues of security, human or international rights violations, criminality, organized criminality, health grounds, financial reasons, misrepresentation, non-compliance with the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act, and having an inadmissible family member.

This is going to get interesting.

Eagles Don Henley, Bernie Leadon, Timothy B. Schmit, And Joe Walsh Pay Tribute To Glenn Frey On Grammys

0

Six-time GRAMMY winner Glenn Frey will be honored at the 58th Annual GRAMMY Awards when the late musician’s bandmates join close friend and collaborator Jackson Browne to perform a classic hit from the Eagles’ legendary songbook. Eagles members including eight-time GRAMMY winner and current nominee Don Henley, GRAMMY winner Bernie Leadon, three-time GRAMMY winner Timothy B. Schmit, and five-time GRAMMY winner Joe Walsh will be joined by Browne in a one-time-only special tribute to Frey.

“Glenn Frey’s untimely passing was a huge loss for the entire creative community,” said Neil Portnow, President/CEO of The Recording Academy. “For more than 45 years, the Eagles have played a significant role in shaping our musical landscape. We are honored to welcome the band, along with Jackson Browne, to the GRAMMY stage in tribute to Glenn’s tremendous legacy.”

Eagles founding member Glenn Frey is a six-time GRAMMY winner. His wins include Record Of The Year for “Hotel California” in 1978 and, most recently, Best Pop Instrumental Performance for “I Dreamed There Was No War” in 2009.

“Given the impact that the Eagles have had on music, it was only right that we have a moment for Glenn, the band’s co-founder,” said Ken Ehrlich, executive producer of the GRAMMY Awards. “We couldn’t think of a more appropriate way to honor him than by bringing together his bandmates and long-time friend and collaborator, Jackson Browne, to play an Eagles classic that forever changed popular music. It’ll be an emotional moment for many of us — one of reflection, respect, and celebration.”

Henley is currently nominated, with co-writer, Stan Lynch, for Best American Roots Song for “The Cost Of Living” from his Cass County album.

Entertainment icon and two-time GRAMMY winner LL COOL J will host the GRAMMYs for the fifth consecutive year. Taking place at STAPLES Center in Los Angeles, the 58th Annual GRAMMY Awards will be broadcast live in HDTV and 5.1 surround sound on the CBS Television Network, Monday, Feb. 15, 2016, at 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT.

You’ve Never Heard Star Wars Music Like This, Thanks To Rick Rubin

0

When it comes to Star Wars music, it’s time to follow a teaching from Yoda: you must unlearn what you have learned. Introducing Star Wars Headspace.

By Hollywood Records and American Recordings, Star Wars Headspace is a new compilation of original electronic dance music infused with Star Wars sound clips and effects — executive produced by the legendary Rick Rubin. Coming February 19 to all digital outlets and March 18 to retail stores everywhere, Star Wars Headspace gathers some of the biggest names and emerging talent in electronic music for an entirely new take on a galaxy far, far away. Pre-orders open today, and StarWars.com has an exclusive first look at the striking cover below.

The album opens with “C-3P0’s Plight” by Kaskade; the track pulsates and builds into a soundscape, iconic Star Wars samples like blaster fire and Wookiee roars enveloping the listener, while C-3P0 laments…“How typical.” It captures the humor of Star Wars, the melodrama of C-3PO, and is a kinetic, dynamic production that sets the stage for what follows.

In addition to contributions from GTA, Flying Lotus, and others, Star Wars Headspace features an original production by Rick Rubin: “NR-G7,” complete with a driving beat, R2-D2 bleeps, and much more. Also included is a remix of J.J. Abrams’ and Lin-Manuel Miranda’s fan-favorite “Jabba Flow” from Star Wars: The Force Awakens, called “Jabba Flow: Rick Rubin Re-Work (feat. A-Trak).” This version transforms the song into something completely different — a true house track — and is a must-hear for Star Wars and dance music fans alike. Coalition for Music Education Launches 12th Annual Music Monday

0

For the past 11 years six million Canadians have gathered annually in schools and communities to participate in a coast-to-coast initiative designed to celebrate the power of music in our lives, especially our schools.  The Coalition for Music Education is thrilled to launch the 12th annual Music Monday with a new initiative created to show the nation just how learning and making music in Canada affects us all. Like a wave of music across Canada, when the school day begins on the Eastern shores of Newfoundland, through the end of a normal school day on the Western shores of British Columbia, our country’s young people will celebrate the special place  music holds in our lives. All music makers are invited to submit videos that showcase learning and making music in their schools and communities. All videos received by the deadline April 15, 2016 will be considered for inclusion in the Music Monday – Coast2Coast (#MMC2C) powered Music Monday webcast.

Music Monday is a signature program of the Coalition for Music Education.  It is Canada’s nationwide celebration of the power of music in our lives, especially our schools. Music Monday is the only national celebration of music education that actively engages children and youth in their schools and communities. The first Monday in May (this year, May 2, 2016) music makers of all generations and genres gather in their schools and communities to make music, and at the same time during the day we join with one voice, by singing the official Music Monday anthem for a simultaneous nation-wide sing-along.

Following on last year’s successful showcase events in Place des Arts, Montreal and the National Music Centre, Calgary, Music Monday 2016 will be led by a Showcase Concert to be webcast live from in front of Toronto’s City Hall at Nathan Phillips Square. Hosted by Céline Peterson, this one-hour concert will feature special musical guests, including Music Monday Anthem composerConnor Ross, who will be joined by Youth4Music Ambassadors on the Showcase stage to lead the nation in a simultaneous sing-along of his song “We Are One”.  Interested participants/volunteers can register by emailing info@musicmakesus.ca

On May 2nd, the #MMC2C initiative will air a webcast of curated videos that will show how music fills our culture in regions acrossCanada. Schools, music groups and communities are invited to submit a video for this nation-wide celebration. This webcast will actively engage our young people to learn, create and make music. Participants across the country will be able to tune in to a full day of Music Monday video performances and messages at www.musicmonday.ca. For more information on how to submit a video for the webcast and to register for Music Monday 2016, participants should visit musicmonday.ca Videos must be from within Canada and relate to Canadian schools, music groups, businesses or community programs.  Preference will be given to performances of Canadian music.

Participants are also invited to share their thoughts via video about the importance of including music education in schools. Those video messages could also be selected to be included in the MMC2C all-day webcast.

Music tells the stories of who we are. This year, The Coalition for Music Education introduces a new initiative: MMC2C. On May 2nd, the MMC2C initiative will air a webcast of curated videos that will show how music fills our culture in regions across Canada.
