Jessica Williams Gets It Right Defending Beyoncé’s Halftime Performance

0

The Daily Show correspondent Jessica Williams had some words of wisdom for people who thought Beyoncé’s performance during the Super Bowl halftime show was too much because of its themes of black empowerment. Toronto City Counsellor Jim Karygiannis, in an interview with The Toronto Sun, the former Member of Parliament thinks the Canadian government should investigate Beyoncé and her backup dancers for any ties to the Black Panther Party. “Perhaps Immigration Minister John McCallum should have her investigated first? If someone wore bullets and supported (a radical group) here, they would not be welcomed in the United States—that’s for sure,” Karygiannis told Sun columnist Joe Warmington. “She or some of them could be found not eligible to enter the country as others in the past have faced.”

The Canadian Border Services Agency can deny entry based on issues of security, human or international rights violations, criminality, organized criminality, health grounds, financial reasons, misrepresentation, non-compliance with the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act, and having an inadmissible family member.

This is going to get interesting.

Eagles Don Henley, Bernie Leadon, Timothy B. Schmit, And Joe Walsh Pay Tribute To Glenn Frey On Grammys

0

Six-time GRAMMY winner Glenn Frey will be honored at the 58th Annual GRAMMY Awards when the late musician’s bandmates join close friend and collaborator Jackson Browne to perform a classic hit from the Eagles’ legendary songbook. Eagles members including eight-time GRAMMY winner and current nominee Don Henley, GRAMMY winner Bernie Leadon, three-time GRAMMY winner Timothy B. Schmit, and five-time GRAMMY winner Joe Walsh will be joined by Browne in a one-time-only special tribute to Frey.

“Glenn Frey’s untimely passing was a huge loss for the entire creative community,” said Neil Portnow, President/CEO of The Recording Academy. “For more than 45 years, the Eagles have played a significant role in shaping our musical landscape. We are honored to welcome the band, along with Jackson Browne, to the GRAMMY stage in tribute to Glenn’s tremendous legacy.”

Eagles founding member Glenn Frey is a six-time GRAMMY winner. His wins include Record Of The Year for “Hotel California” in 1978 and, most recently, Best Pop Instrumental Performance for “I Dreamed There Was No War” in 2009.

“Given the impact that the Eagles have had on music, it was only right that we have a moment for Glenn, the band’s co-founder,” said Ken Ehrlich, executive producer of the GRAMMY Awards. “We couldn’t think of a more appropriate way to honor him than by bringing together his bandmates and long-time friend and collaborator, Jackson Browne, to play an Eagles classic that forever changed popular music. It’ll be an emotional moment for many of us — one of reflection, respect, and celebration.”

Henley is currently nominated, with co-writer, Stan Lynch, for Best American Roots Song for “The Cost Of Living” from his Cass County album.

Entertainment icon and two-time GRAMMY winner LL COOL J will host the GRAMMYs for the fifth consecutive year. Taking place at STAPLES Center in Los Angeles, the 58th Annual GRAMMY Awards will be broadcast live in HDTV and 5.1 surround sound on the CBS Television Network, Monday, Feb. 15, 2016, at 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT.

You’ve Never Heard Star Wars Music Like This, Thanks To Rick Rubin

0

When it comes to Star Wars music, it’s time to follow a teaching from Yoda: you must unlearn what you have learned. Introducing Star Wars Headspace.

By Hollywood Records and American Recordings, Star Wars Headspace is a new compilation of original electronic dance music infused with Star Wars sound clips and effects — executive produced by the legendary Rick Rubin. Coming February 19 to all digital outlets and March 18 to retail stores everywhere, Star Wars Headspace gathers some of the biggest names and emerging talent in electronic music for an entirely new take on a galaxy far, far away. Pre-orders open today, and StarWars.com has an exclusive first look at the striking cover below.

The album opens with “C-3P0’s Plight” by Kaskade; the track pulsates and builds into a soundscape, iconic Star Wars samples like blaster fire and Wookiee roars enveloping the listener, while C-3P0 laments…“How typical.” It captures the humor of Star Wars, the melodrama of C-3PO, and is a kinetic, dynamic production that sets the stage for what follows.

In addition to contributions from GTA, Flying Lotus, and others, Star Wars Headspace features an original production by Rick Rubin: “NR-G7,” complete with a driving beat, R2-D2 bleeps, and much more. Also included is a remix of J.J. Abrams’ and Lin-Manuel Miranda’s fan-favorite “Jabba Flow” from Star Wars: The Force Awakens, called “Jabba Flow: Rick Rubin Re-Work (feat. A-Trak).” This version transforms the song into something completely different — a true house track — and is a must-hear for Star Wars and dance music fans alike. Coalition for Music Education Launches 12th Annual Music Monday

0

For the past 11 years six million Canadians have gathered annually in schools and communities to participate in a coast-to-coast initiative designed to celebrate the power of music in our lives, especially our schools.  The Coalition for Music Education is thrilled to launch the 12th annual Music Monday with a new initiative created to show the nation just how learning and making music in Canada affects us all. Like a wave of music across Canada, when the school day begins on the Eastern shores of Newfoundland, through the end of a normal school day on the Western shores of British Columbia, our country’s young people will celebrate the special place  music holds in our lives. All music makers are invited to submit videos that showcase learning and making music in their schools and communities. All videos received by the deadline April 15, 2016 will be considered for inclusion in the Music Monday – Coast2Coast (#MMC2C) powered Music Monday webcast.

Music Monday is a signature program of the Coalition for Music Education.  It is Canada’s nationwide celebration of the power of music in our lives, especially our schools. Music Monday is the only national celebration of music education that actively engages children and youth in their schools and communities. The first Monday in May (this year, May 2, 2016) music makers of all generations and genres gather in their schools and communities to make music, and at the same time during the day we join with one voice, by singing the official Music Monday anthem for a simultaneous nation-wide sing-along.

Following on last year’s successful showcase events in Place des Arts, Montreal and the National Music Centre, Calgary, Music Monday 2016 will be led by a Showcase Concert to be webcast live from in front of Toronto’s City Hall at Nathan Phillips Square. Hosted by Céline Peterson, this one-hour concert will feature special musical guests, including Music Monday Anthem composerConnor Ross, who will be joined by Youth4Music Ambassadors on the Showcase stage to lead the nation in a simultaneous sing-along of his song “We Are One”.  Interested participants/volunteers can register by emailing info@musicmakesus.ca

On May 2nd, the #MMC2C initiative will air a webcast of curated videos that will show how music fills our culture in regions acrossCanada. Schools, music groups and communities are invited to submit a video for this nation-wide celebration. This webcast will actively engage our young people to learn, create and make music. Participants across the country will be able to tune in to a full day of Music Monday video performances and messages at www.musicmonday.ca. For more information on how to submit a video for the webcast and to register for Music Monday 2016, participants should visit musicmonday.ca Videos must be from within Canada and relate to Canadian schools, music groups, businesses or community programs.  Preference will be given to performances of Canadian music.

Participants are also invited to share their thoughts via video about the importance of including music education in schools. Those video messages could also be selected to be included in the MMC2C all-day webcast.

SXSW Music Announces Rap-A-Lot Records’ Bun B And James A. Prince As Keynote Speakers

0

The South by Southwest Music Conference and Festival (SXSW) is pleased to announce its second Keynote Speaker, James A. Prince of Rap-A-Lot Records. Mr. Prince’s Keynote conversation with Rap-A-Lot artist Bun B will take place Thursday, March 17, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. in Ballroom D of the Austin Convention Center.

James A. Prince is the founder and CEO of Rap-A-Lot Records and is the pioneering spirit behind the Houston-based, multi-million dollar record label. Founded in 1986, Mr. Prince started Rap-A-Lot in part as an incentive to keep a group of neighborhood teenagers in school and off the streets of Houston’s notorious 5th Ward. His desire to help these youth stay in school launched what would eventually become the platinum-selling group Geto Boys. The creation of Rap-A-Lot and the Geto Boys was the beginning of the ascent of southern Hip Hop.

The label produced numerous hit albums and singles, accumulated over two-dozen Gold and Platinum records that include artists like the Geto Boys, Scarface, Do or Die, Big Mike, Bun B, Tela, Devin the Dude, Zero, and many more artists.

Mr. Prince has negotiated numerous distribution deals for Rap-A-Lot with Virgin Records, EMI, Asylum (Warner), Fontana (Universal) and most recently Red (Sony). More recently, he partnered with his son, Jas Prince to discover Hip Hop superstar Drake and took him from performing on MySpace, to being one of the most recognizable musical artists of this generation.

J. Prince will be interviewed by rapper Bun B, who got his start as half of the iconic southern rap duo UGK alongside the late Pimp C. Bun has gone on to build a fruitful solo career, most recently releasing Trill OG: The Epilogue on Rap-A-Lot in 2013. Bun B has made forays into areas outside of music, most notably as a guest lecturer at Rice University and the release of Bun B’s Rap Coloring Book in 2013.

Mr. Prince’s Keynote is in addition to Tony Visconti’s previously announced appearance. More will be announced in the near future. These Keynotes will be a highlight among the many conference sessions designed to offer registrants unique learning and networking opportunities. For more information on conference sessions, please go here.

The South by Southwest Music Conference and Festival is a six-day event held every March in Austin, Texas. The conference offers unmatched access to ideas and global viewpoints on an increasingly borderless industry. It aims to educate and inspire musicians and professionals alike, with sessions attended by over 30,000 registrants and showcasing artists. A large multi-industry trade show exhibition, Music Gear Expo and daytime stage performances round out the day while evenings are devoted to the SXSW Music Festival, which showcases 2,000 acts ranging from the unsigned to the iconic. The 30th annual event takes place March 15 – 20, 2016. For more information, please visit sxsw.com. To register for the event, please visit sxsw.com/attend.

This Andy Warhol/Velvet Underground Record Player Is The Greatest Thing I’ve Ever Seen

0

Want. Very. Badly. It can be yours for $2,100 from this Esty dealer, who says:

I bought this record player because the time to buy something you have never seen is when you see it. And I am a huge Warhol fan. At the time, I could find no information on this. A friend was able to find this old advertising for it in an old Speigel catalog. In searching the internet, there are only 2 of these known. There is one in Indianapolis that a guy has from his youth- a present from his grandmother. The other one is in the Banana Museum in California. I even wrote to the Warhol Foundation to find out if there was any kind of affiliation, but they had never heard anything about this and had no record. They came up with the same information I did. Mine is not perfect, it shows wear and I cannot determine if the black markings on this have been redone or if they are original- looking at the picture in the ad, it is still hard to tell, but they look rough to me. I still love this. It runs properly at all 3 speeds, but it will need a needle. The cord is in good condition and the case locks as it should. The ad touts that this will play in any position, even upside-down, but I would not suggest such a thing, as it cannot be good for your records.

Headbangers In Their Natural Element

0

The new book Headbangers is a collection of Danish photographer Jacob Ehrbahn’s intimate portraits of the beauty and chaos of heavy metal rockers in the throes of musical ecstasy taken at European metal festivals such as Denmark’s Copenhell, Germany’s Wacken Open Air, and Sweden’s Metaltown. Heavy metal fans go totally berserk when listening to their music. Some shake their heads violently from side to side and back and forth, while others go all in and flail their entire bodies in time to the blast beats. In this collection Ehrbahn’s camera stops time and captures the surprising and life-affirming moments when the headbangers abandon all semblance of vanity and surrender to the rhythm. Ehrbahn transports us to an intimate world disconnected from time and space—a universe where it’s possible to transcend the frenzy and enter an altered state that brings calm, joy, and relief.
