Song translations usually suck: and it’s because you either have to lose the meaning or the sound. This video talks about syllabic vs melisamatic singing, about music, and about Beethoven.
How sign language innovators are bringing music to the deaf
Amber Galloway Gallego is one of a growing number of ASL interpreters that specializes in the performing arts, specifically music. She’s interpreted for over 400 artists at this point and has a special knack for interpreting hip-hop acts like Kendrick Lamar and Drake.
If we merely show the sign for music then we are doing an injustice as an interpreter. So after listening to the beat and how their their tonality is and all the instruments then what I do is I break it down from English to ASL. So rhyming, metaphor, and wordplay are an intrinsic part of lyrical music especially hip-hop. …Since the enactment of the Americans with Disabilities Act in 1990 concert venues have been required to provide interpreters for deaf attendees. …It’s vitally important that concert venues hire interpreters who understand the emotional power of music.
The Best Drummer In The World Is This Washing Machine
Musician Adam Cefai captured footage of his old washing machine as it played a soul-crushing polyrhythmic beat that sounded much like the percussion section of your favourite band getting down and dirty. Reminds me a bit of Tool…
Brave New Waves Radio Show Releasing Rheostatics and The Grapes Of Wrath Sessions
Canada has more than our 150th year anniversary to celebrate in 2017: this year Toronto-based Artoffact Records will be releasing many of the inaugural BRAVE NEW WAVES sessions via CD, Digitally and on Vinyl.
It will be the first time these sessions have been released commercially to the public. Each release will include the songs performed during the program along with conducted interviews with the session’s host.
Brave New Waves was a Canadian radio program, which aired on CBC from 1984 to 2007 five nights a week. The show profiled alternative and indie music and culture, including film, comics, literature and art. Longtime host Brent Bambury once described the show as “explaining fringe culture to a comfortable mainstream audience” and his successor Patti Schmidt said it was “invented with an idea of what John Peel’s show was, but without ever having heard it.”
The show was inducted into Hour magazine’s Montreal Rock’n’Roll Hall of Fame in 2010.
Artoffact Records is a Toronto-based record label founded in 1999 that has released and reissued nearly 300 records in a variety of genres, including industrial, rock, metal, punk, pop, and avant-garde. Notable artists include 3TEETH, Xandria, Legend, Front Line Assembly, Skinny Puppy’s Cevin Key, as well as an impressive list of Canadian reissues from artists such as 808 State, The Gruesomes, Nash the Slash, Psyche, and Download.
First two releases will be BRAVE NEW WAVES sessions with Rheostatics and The Grapes Of Wrath, to be release on May 5th.
Tegan And Sara Release Short Film Inspired By “U-Turn” Single
Tegan and Sara have released a short film for their single “U-turn” from their album Love You to Death. The film, shot in Toronto by director Emma Higgins explores the give and take of relationships through the lens of a group of teenage women. The release of this film follows the recent announcements, which will see Tegan and Sara perform on a number of Canadian festival dates, as well as a highly anticipated headline show in Halifax. See below for a full list of upcoming Canadian tour dates.
Of the video, Tegan Quin says “When you’re young, some of your strongest and most rewarding relationships are with your friends. The kind who support you to become who you really are. Inspired by U-turn and classic girl crew nostalgia, we want to celebrate those kinds of bonds with this short film from director Emma Higgins. This was our first time experimenting so far beyond the boundaries of a more traditional music video for one of our songs, and we are so thrilled with how it turned out!”
Director Emma Higgins says of the experience of creating the film, “I loved this song’s story of the give and take of being in a relationship and was inspired to relate this idea to the friendships between young women. We had a cast of talented, unique, and passionate young women who brought so much personality to their roles. Adding to the strong female influence, our crew was comprised of almost entirely women, which made this project an extra special experience.”
Toronto based designer, Hayley Elsaesser, says of her inspiration for the iconic clothing in this film, “I love the premise of the video, all about friendship and celebrating individuality. These are the kinds of girls I design clothes for so I thought it was a perfect fit. I also really appreciated the message: the fact that this is about showing women bringing each other up, I think that’s an important message.”
In addition to the upcoming tour dates, Tegan and Sara have also launched a promotion around the release of the new “U-turn” film. One lucky winner will receive 2 passes to see Tegan and Sara at Wayhome Music & Arts Festival, an assortment of Tegan and Sara merchandise and an autographed vinyl copy of Love You to Death. What’s more, the winner will receive the ‘80s- inspired fashion pieces designed by Hayley Elsaesser, including the scissor jacket from the “U-turn” film, a pair of Slime Time sunnies, a serpentine patch and Heavenly Socks. To enter, fans should click over to Tegan and Sara’s Facebook page here.
Tegan and Sara have been nominated for three Juno Awards this year, including Group of the Year and Songwriter of the Year, as well as receiving a nomination for Pop Album of the Year for Love You to Death.
