Guitar Legend Allan Holdsworth 12 CD Box Set Collection and Accompanying Double CD Collection To Be Released April 7

0

Los Angeles, CA-based Manifesto Records will release a new, complete 12-CD box set by guitar innovator, jazz, and progressive rock legend Allan Holdsworth titled The Man Who Changed Guitar Forever, along with a 2-CD updated and expanded Best Of collection selected by the artist, titled Eidolon.

Manifesto Records referenced the box sets seemingly portentous title from the cover story title featuring Holdsworth in Guitar Player magazine’s April 2008 edition. Given his humble nature, Holdsworth is a bit embarrassed by the title and finds the notion that he changed ā€œguitar forever,ā€ somewhat overblown—more befitting of names like Orville Gibson, Leo Fender, or Ned Steinberger.

Holdsworth, born in Bradford, England in 1946, embarked on a solo career as composer and bandleader exclusively in 1979. Holdsworth’s career as producer, bandleader, and lead composer is documented in this box set, and with the artist’s 28-track selection of favorites in Eidolon. Both packages include extensive liner notes, and an updated 2016 interview with Holdsworth discussing each release, his history, and approach to the instrument.

From 1982 through 2003, Holdsworth recorded a dozen albums that have been lovingly put together for The Man Who Changed Guitar Forever collection. Featured on the box set are eleven remastered studio albums, starting with the 1982 studio release, Allan Holdsworth, I.O.U., and the archival 2003 live release, Then!, recorded live in Tokyo in 1990. All feature additional bonus tracks added for special editions or the original Japan releases, along with the original artwork and studio credits. Also included are the Grammy-nominated Road Games (1983), Metal Fatigue (1985), Sand (1987), Secrets (1989), Wardenclyffe Tower (1992), Hard Hat Area (1993), None Too Soon (1996), The Sixteen Men of Tain (2000), and Flat Tire: Music for a Non-Existent Movie (2001).

Holdsworth has been recognized by many of the world’s most accomplished and unique rock and jazz guitar virtuosos. Luminaries including Eddie Van Halen, Carlos Santana, Frank Zappa, Pat Metheny, John McLaughlin, Joe Satriani, Tom Morello universally expressed reverence and astonishment at Holdsworth’s pioneering approach to his playing and vast vocabulary of ā€œuncommonā€ chord voicings.

He further expanded the guitar’s orchestral potential with a range of electronic effects, then moved on to become one of the early innovators of guitar-based synthesizer controllers. In the nearly five decades Holdsworth has been touring, collaborating, and recording, he has created an immense sonic and musical legacy.

In the ā€˜70s he played with legendary Miles Davis drummer, Tony Williams and Cream bassist Jack Bruce as the band Lifetime, and toured with Soft Machine. He worked with former Yes and King Crimson drummer, Bill Bruford’s first solo project, Feels Good To Me, and subsequent recordings with Jean-Luc Ponty, and Gong. Bruford suggested Allan for the progressive-rock ā€œsupergroup,ā€ U.K., which, along with Bruford, also featured John Wetton and Eddie Jobson.

Both The Man Who Changed Guitar Forever and Eidolon will become precious to those who love the world’s great guitarists. Fans of deeply unique, sonically rich and pristine recordings of great musicians taking their music to the next level and beyond, will also be in awe of these collections.

20 Of The Greatest Isolated Guitar Tracks From Jimi Hendrix

Widely recognized as one of the most creative and influential musicians of the 20th century, Jimi Hendrix pioneered the explosive possibilities of the electric guitar. Hendrix’s innovative style of combining fuzz, feedback and controlled distortion created a new musical form. Because he was unable to read or write music, it is nothing short of remarkable that Jimi Hendrix’s meteoric rise in the music took place in just four short years. His musical language continues to influence a host of modern musicians, from George Clinton to Miles Davis, and Steve Vai to Jonny Lang.

Check out these amazing and astonishing isolated guitar tracks from Jimi.

National Music Centre launches special exhibition dedicated to Sarah McLachlan on March 29

0

The National Music Centre (NMC) is pleased to launch a new temporary exhibition at Studio Bell in partnership with The Canadian Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences (CARAS), honouring 2017 Canadian Music Hall of Fame inductee Sarah McLachlan.

The launch coincides with this weekend’s 2017 JUNO Awards, where McLachlan will be honoured during the televised broadcast on Sunday, April 2.

One of the most celebrated singer-songwriters in entertainment, the multi-platinum award-winning performer has achieved international acclaim as a musician and philanthropist. McLachlan has sold more than 40 million albums worldwide, and released iconic hits, like ā€œBuilding a Mystery,ā€ ā€œAngel,ā€ and ā€œSweet Surrender,ā€ which continue to have a lasting impact today.

ā€œI’m incredibly honoured by this exhibition that features my work as a songwriter, as well as my efforts to give back and build stronger communities through music,ā€ said Sarah McLachlan. ā€œMusic is a gift that’s meant to be shared and I was happy to be able to loan many beloved pieces to the National Music Centre for this exhibition.ā€

The exhibition, called Milestones: Sarah McLachlan, will be located on Studio Bell’s fifth floor, and will feature a wide selection of awards and artifacts from McLachlan, including her CP-80M electric grand piano, used during her Lilith Fair performances; her Kay ā€œBarney Kesselā€ electric guitar, which appears on McLachlan’s sophomore album, Solace; and a Kala ukulele. Other treasures shared by McLachlan include hand-written lyric sheets, original tour books, and an outfit she wore at Lilith Fair.

Visitors will gain a better understanding of McLachlan’s landmark career from her first recording contract at age 19 with Nettwerk; her role as the founder of Lilith Fair, the most successful all-female concert series in North America that sought to bring musical communities together, and raised in excess of $7 million dollars for local and national charities; her support for free music education for under-served youth in Canada; and her creative process as a performer and artist.

ā€œAs the physical home of the Canadian Music Hall of Fame, NMC will continue to fulfill its national mandate by working closely with the Canadian Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences, and others to showcase the remarkable contributions of Canadian musicians, past and present, through on-site programming and exhibitions at Studio Bell,ā€ said Andrew Mosker, President and CEO, NMC.

ā€œCARAS is excited to see this exhibition launched in partnership with the National Music Centre, and to continue this annual tradition of honouring our iconic Canadian Music Hall of Fame inductees,ā€ said Allan Reid, President and CEO, CARAS.

Milestones: Sarah McLachlan is accessible with paid admission to Studio Bell, and will run from March 29, 2017 until the fall of this year.

Song translations usually suck: and it’s because you either have to lose the meaning or the sound. This video talks about syllabic vs melisamatic singing, about music, and about Beethoven.

How sign language innovators are bringing music to the deaf

0

Amber Galloway Gallego is one of a growing number of ASL interpreters that specializes in the performing arts, specifically music. She’s interpreted for over 400 artists at this point and has a special knack for interpreting hip-hop acts like Kendrick Lamar and Drake.

If we merely show the sign for music then we are doing an injustice as an interpreter. So after listening to the beat and how their their tonality is and all the instruments then what I do is I break it down from English to ASL. So rhyming, metaphor, and wordplay are an intrinsic part of lyrical music especially hip-hop. …Since the enactment of the Americans with Disabilities Act in 1990 concert venues have been required to provide interpreters for deaf attendees. …It’s vitally important that concert venues hire interpreters who understand the emotional power of music.

Brave New Waves Radio Show Releasing Rheostatics and The Grapes Of Wrath Sessions

0

Canada has more than our 150th year anniversary to celebrate in 2017: this year Toronto-based Artoffact Records will be releasing many of the inaugural BRAVE NEW WAVES sessions via CD, Digitally and on Vinyl.
It will be the first time these sessions have been released commercially to the public. Each release will include the songs performed during the program along with conducted interviews with the session’s host.

Brave New Waves was a Canadian radio program, which aired on CBC from 1984 to 2007 five nights a week. The show profiled alternative and indie music and culture, including film, comics, literature and art. Longtime host Brent Bambury once described the show as ā€œexplaining fringe culture to a comfortable mainstream audienceā€ and his successor Patti Schmidt said it was “invented with an idea of what John Peel’s show was, but without ever having heard it.”

The show was inducted into Hour magazine’s Montreal Rock’n’Roll Hall of Fame in 2010.

Artoffact Records is a Toronto-based record label founded in 1999 that has released and reissued nearly 300 records in a variety of genres, including industrial, rock, metal, punk, pop, and avant-garde. Notable artists include 3TEETH, Xandria, Legend, Front Line Assembly, Skinny Puppy’s Cevin Key, as well as an impressive list of Canadian reissues from artists such as 808 State, The Gruesomes, Nash the Slash, Psyche, and Download.

First two releases will be BRAVE NEW WAVES sessions with Rheostatics and The Grapes Of Wrath, to be release on May 5th.
