The Canada Black Music Archives Announces Black History Month Programming: Dream Warriors, Mathematik + More

This Black History Month the Canada Black Music Archives celebrates Toronto’s hip-hop icons and the impact the city has had on the genre. Often overlooked due to the popularity of our neighbours to the south, Toronto hip-hop is long overdue for its flowers.

Starting February 1st and running to the end of the month, Canadian Cyphers: Elements of Toronto Hip-Hop will be open to the public at the City of Toronto Archives located at 255 Spadina Rd. This exhibition offers a glimpse at the many greats who have built the Toronto hip-hop scene and the elements that set the genre apart. Explore album covers, photographs, turntables and more. The exhibit will also feature items from Toronto’s iconic 100 Miles brand and an audiovisual display featuring a mix of live performances and interviews from hip-hop’s early days.

As part of the Black History Month programming and in partnership with the City of Toronto Music Office, the CBMA Presents the Black History Month Showcase. This event will take place once more at the City of Toronto Archives on Friday February 21st.

Hosting the evening is Andy McCurbin aka ‘Brother A’. The MC was a popular presence in the early days of Toronto hip-hop. Special guest speakers include former President of the Ontario Black History Society, Dr. Rosemary Sadlier, and Dr. Mark Campbell of Northside Hip-Hop.

Legendary duo, Dream Warriors, will make a special appearance; their global hit “My Definition of a Boombastic Jazz Style” helped put the city on the map. Check out the music video for the 90s classic here.

Another Toronto rap pioneer, Mathematik, will be performing. He is known for his conscious lyrism and fresh perspectives. Masters of the mix spinning between sets include DJ Carl Allen, DJ DTS, and Joey from Sound Quest. Special guest speakers and a surprise guest star are still to be announced, so stay tuned!

Those in attendance are welcome to explore the Canadian Cyphers: Elements of Toronto Hip-Hop exhibit and music video screenings in between acts. Americana Artist KC Armstrong Revisits the Past with Swampy New Single “Someone Else Tonight”

Musicians revisiting their discographies can shed light on a certain time and place. It can also be a reason to revisit old songs and see if there’s a new sonic coat of paint that might bring them back to life. For Brantford, Ontario-based Americana musician KC Armstrong, the pandemic offered up time to rediscover old gems, including “Someone Else Tonight,” the latest strikingly solid single, from his Finally Crafted album, teeming with passion and verve despite the recording process being the antithesis of the original approach.

“Someone Else Tonight” was originally recorded for Ranchsongs, an album released in the mid ’80s by Armstrong’s previous band Cadillac Ranch. Armstrong says that version was “recorded live off-the-floor in about three takes with no rehearsal beforehand.” Each of the musicians simply used hand signals as cues to perform their solos as they would live in concert. For this latest version created during the pandemic, the recording process was deliberate, requiring patience as files were sent back and forth via e-mail after recording was done in each musician’s home studio.

Armstrong says he started with drum tracks, then bass, 12-string acoustic guitar, and a scratch vocal. “Doing the recording in this fashion, you might think there would be no synergy between the musicians; each in their own cities, each at a different time – but this was not the case,” he says.

Guest musician Bobby Brioux, who plays mandolin on “Someone Else Tonight,” was given the “bare-bones backing tracks” as a guide but asked to “play away.” While editing that particular piece, Armstrong received keyboardist Steve O’Connor’s accordion and Wurlitzer parts who had only been given the request to make the music “eerie and foreboding.” Neither Brioux nor O’Connor knew what each other was playing. But what transpired was amazing!

“It was astounding,” Armstrong says. “There was only one small bar of music in the whole song where both musicians were playing simultaneously. The rest of the song fit together perfectly while also allowing guitarist Barry Haggarty places to showcase his talents. Another cosmic bit of good fortune emerged when Armstrong unknowingly left both of Haggarty’s guitar tracks in the song. When played simultaneously, they created a gorgeous “twin solos” effect on “Someone Else Tonight.”

“Someone Else Tonight” brings to mind a swampy, dark, and mysterious collage of folk, blues, “swampy-country,” and Americana similar to the late Gordon Lightfoot and particularly Steve Earle’s 2000 album Transcendental Blues. Led Zeppelin’s intro to “No Quarter” sounds like a subtle source of inspiration as well. A Celtic hue adds great results as the song has a surefire, steady pace demanding your attention. The homestretch is also fantastic as the interplay between the instruments and vocals creates music far greater than the sum of its parts. Alongside Armstrong (who sings and plays bass), Brioux, Haggarty, and Steve O’Connor, additional musicians on “Someone Else Tonight” include vocalist MaryEllen Allen, saxophonist Sean O’Connor, guitarist Scott Utting and drummer Jake Adams.

“Someone Else Tonight” is the latest offering from KC Armstrong and the follow-up to his festival single “I Hate That Sweater.” Armstrong’s witty, whimsical style brings to mind musicians like Earle, Randy Newman, Nick Lowe, and the late Ronnie Hawkins. In fact, Armstrong’s band subbed as the Hawks for the iconic rocker back in 2003. Armstrong’s then band Cadillac Ranch were slated to back Hawkins at the legendary SARS-Stock concert at Toronto’s Downsview Park before hundreds of thousands featuring the Rolling Stones and AC/DC. Sadly, Hawkins’ health resulted in the appearance never being realized. Armstrong has also worked with and shared the stage with countless others, including the late Jeff Healey, while playing festivals across Canada and throughout North America.

Now with the spectacular and magical “Someone Else Tonight,” KC Armstrong is kicking off 2025 with a bang. It’s a track you should be telling someone else about tonight, if not sooner!

1. The Title Track Was Recorded in One Take

The nearly 10-minute epic “Marquee Moon” wasn’t pieced together in a thousand overdubs—it was captured live in the studio in a single take. Guitarists Tom Verlaine and Richard Lloyd’s mesmerizing interplay, Billy Ficca’s fluid drumming, and Fred Smith’s pulsing bassline all came together in perfect synchronicity. Nevertheless, the cover has become iconic, cementing Television’s image as one of the coolest, most enigmatic bands to emerge from CBGB’s legendary scene. Over the years, Verlaine softened on his dislike of the cover—but he never fully embraced it.

Here’s The Complete Record Store Day List For 2025

Record Store Day was conceived in 2007 at a gathering of independent record store owners and employees as a way to celebrate and spread the word about the unique culture surrounding nearly 1400 independently-owned record stores in the US and thousands of similar stores internationally. The first Record Store Day took place on April 19, 2008. Today, Record Store Day is celebrated at independently-owned brick-and-mortar record stores around the world.

This is a day for the people who make up the world of the record store—the staff, the customers, and the artists—to come together and celebrate the unique culture of a record store and the special role they play in their communities. Special vinyl and CD releases and various promotional products are made exclusively for the day. Festivities include performances, cook-outs, body painting, meet & greets with artists, parades, DJs spinning records, and on and on. In 2008 a small list of titles was released on Record Store Day and that list has grown to include artists and labels both large and small, in every genre and price point. For several years, 60% or more of the Record Store Day Official Release List came from independent labels and distributors. The list continues to include a wide range of artists, covering the diverse taste of record stores and their customers.

On the first Record Store Day, Metallica spent hours at Rasputin Music in San Francisco meeting their fans and now each year hundreds of artista—both internationally famous and from the block–flock to record stores around the world for performances, signings, meet and greets and to fill their own shopping bags with music. In 2009, Jesse “Boots Electric” Hughes (Eagles of Death Metal) declared himself the “Record Store Day Ambassador” as a way of shouting out how important the stores were to artists and since then Joshua Homme (Eagles of Death Metal, Them Crooked Vultures, Queens of the Stone Age), Ozzy Osbourne, Iggy Pop, Jack White, Chuck D, Dave Grohl, Metallica, St. Vincent, Run The Jewels, Pearl Jam, Brandi Carlile, Fred Armisen and Taylor Swift have worn the annual ceremonial sash.

Throughout its 15 years, cities across the United States, including New York City, Los Angeles, Boise, Charleston, Raleigh and Las Vegas have declared Record Store Day an official holiday. In 2013, Co-Founder Michael Kurtz was made a Chevalier of the Ordre Des Arts et Des Letters in France, honoring Record Store Day’s contribution to the cultural and artistic life of the French people. That same year, the organizers of Record Store Day accepted the Independent Spirit Award from NARM (now the Music Biz Association). In 2015, Record Store Day was named the Marketplace Ally of the Year by A2IM, an organization of independent music labels.

While there’s only one Record Store Day a year, the organization works with both independent and major labels throughout the year to create contests, special releases and promotions in order to spotlight the benefits of supporting these independent, locally owned stores with music purchases throughout the year.   In 2010, Record Store Day coordinated its first RSD Black Friday event, which gives record stores exclusive releases as part of the attempt to redirect the focus of the biggest shopping day of the year to the desirable, special things to be found at these local, independently-owned small businesses.

In 2016, Record Store Day created RSD Summer Camp, a conference devoted to the unique business that is the independent record store. The conference provides a place for record store owners and staff to meet and interact with labels, distribution, vendors and anyone whose work places them in the orbit of a record store. In 2017, Record Store Day was a founding partner in the Making Vinyl conference, which brings together the companies and individuals responsible for the ongoing vinyl resurgence.

In 2020, due to the global pandemic which affected record stores worldwide, Record Store Day morphed into three RSD Drops dates– August 29, September 26 and October 24– and split the official List of releases between them. The focus wasn’t on parties, and shows but on celebrating the comfort, joy and fun that they bring their customers through what they sell. Even during a pandemic, record stores proved essential to their community.

In 2021, Record Store Day partnered with Think Indie Distribution and Cured Vinyl for a series of releases called RSD Essentials, bringing classic, “essential” catalog releases of all genres and decades to record store bins year-round. A partnership in 2022 with Atlantic Records created the RSD New Artist Series, introducing younger artists and fans to the beauty of physical formats and the glory of the record store with a tour of in-store appearances, signings and performances across the country.

Dave Stewart Pays Tribute to Bob Dylan With ‘Dave Does Dylan’ Limited-Edition Record Store Day Vinyl Release

DAVE STEWART — the highly acclaimed Rock & Roll Hall of Famer, Songwriter Hall of Famer, Eurythmics co-founder, producer and renowned songwriter — has announced DAVE DOES DYLAN. Set as a limited-edition vinyl release for Record Store Day, the 14-song homage to Bob Dylan will be available at indie record stores on Saturday, April 12 via Surfdog Records.

The spirit and sonic foundation of DAVE DOES DYLAN is built with live takes, pure and unedited. Featuring just Dave Stewart on vocals and guitars recorded in one take, the album finds him performing inspired renditions of Dylan’s songs — all of which he has adored since an early age.

DAVE STEWART is also set to tape an episode of “Recorded Live at Analog” on March 22 at Analog inside The Hutton Hotel in Nashville. He’ll perform songs from DAVE DOES DYLAN with the addition of strings, pedal steel guitar, and keys. The show will air on PBS in July (exact date TBA). BOB DYLAN HAS SAID: “Captain Dave is a dreamer and a fearless innovator, a visionary of high order, very delicately tractable on the surface but beneath that, he’s a slamming, thumping, battering ram, very mystical but rational and sensitive when it comes to the hot irons of art forms. An explosive musician, deft guitar player, innately recognizes the genius in other people and puts it into play without being manipulative. With him, there’s mercifully no reality to yesterday. He is incredibly gracious and soulful, can command the ship and steer the course, dragger, trawler or man of war, Captain Dave.”

DAVE STEWART SHARES: “When I was first learning the guitar, I was about 14 or 15 years old — which would’ve been like 1964 or ’65. I was insistent on getting into folk clubs, but I looked about 12 years old, so they kept me out for a while. Then one chap, Mick Elliot, took pity and allowed me to play at The George & Dragon which became the center of the folk music scene in my hometown, Sunderland N.E. England, in the 1960’s. It was like stepping into a sacred room where visionaries and rebels converged — actually, it was simply a room upstairs in a pub full of older folk singers, beer, whisky and cigarette smoke everywhere. I was allowed to sing two songs, so I would play Bob Dylan songs from his albums that my brother had left behind when he went to college.

The audience was always a bit shocked that this kid, who looked so young, was singing these lyrics — especially in that kind of folk club. It was mostly old folk music that was being played from the local area about the coal mines and about the shipyards, which I loved too…and Dylan would have loved also. I started to sing and play these Dylan songs anywhere I could; in other folk clubs, even on the street all over the north east of England. From then on, I got every Bob Dylan album — and still do to this day — on Vinyl and in every possible variation.

One day in 1985, I received a phone call from Bob Dylan while I was in the studio in Los Angeles. At first, I thought it was my friend joking when the receptionist said ‘Bob Dylan on the phone for you,’ but I could tell as soon as he spoke, it was Bob. We met up that night and we talked about everything; films, music, life, etc… and we ended up in a great Mexican place in South L.A.

He knew everybody and he said, ‘hey, why don’t we make a video tomorrow or the next day?’ It was already two in the morning, but I agreed and I helped make various videos with him during which we became great friends. Years later, I filmed “Blood In My Eyes,” which is a video I shot on two 8mm cameras — just the two of us walking around Camden town.

I’ve played on stage with Bob in London, L.A. and Tokyo, and I find conversations with him — whether on the phone or when we’re together — really relaxed and easy. As you can imagine, he is full of great observations and wisdom, all wrapped up in a poetic language. I’m so, so grateful for getting to know him personally and to now record this album of songs after years of singing them to friends and to myself. It’s been a long road and these lyrics and melodies have kept me company through the best and the worst of times. I hope my album can do the same for Dylan fans out there—who understand the mastery and the mystery Bob has bestowed on us, and still does to this day.”

Michael Stipe Joins Star-Studded Lineup for the 38th Annual Tibet House US Benefit Concert at Carnegie Hall

Tibet House US is pleased to announce that artist, producer and singer/songwriter Michael Stipe, who fronted the band R.E.M. for 31 years, has joined the lineup for this year’s Annual Tibet House US Benefit Concert. One of the longest-running and most renowned live cultural events in New York City, the concert will return to Stern Auditorium / Perelman Stage at Carnegie Hall on March 3rd at 7:30PM. Now in its 38th year, this year’s event is guaranteed to bring a much-needed evening full of amazing music, camaraderie and one-night-only collaborations with Artistic Directors Philip Glass and Laurie Anderson at the helm.
