The Brothers At Madison Square Garden Coming Out On DVD, CD

0

The Brothers – celebrating 50 Years of the music of The Allman Brothers Band that performed at Madison Square Garden in New York City for one night only March 10, 2020 will be issued widely July 23. The Brothers–Jaimoe, Warren Haynes, Derek Trucks, Oteil Burbridge, Marc Quinones-were joined by Duane Trucks and Reese Wynans and special guest Chuck Leavell.

This one-time concert event was a celebration of The Allman Brothers Band’s illustrious career. It notably marks the first time in more than five years that these legendary players were together on stage to perform their iconic hits, and the first time since the passing of founding members Gregg Allman and Butch Trucks. The Brothers / March 10, 2020 / Madison Square Garden / New York, NY is being released on Peach Records, distributed by The Orchard, in conjunction with co-producers Nugs.net, who broadcast the show. It will be available physically (4 CDs, 3 DVDs, 2 Blu-Rays) and the audio will be available digitally. The video will be available for streaming on Nugs and CODA, Amazon Prime’s streaming service.

In a live review of the show, held at the very outset of the pandemic, Rolling Stone’s David Browne said, “Did I really want to risk my life for an Allman Brothers Band 50th-anniversary tribute show?… Arriving at the Garden, I didn’t know what to expect, but all systems seemed standard at first. Ticket-holders milled outside on the street and in the inside lobby. No one wore a mask, since those weren’t yet mandated. As I made my way to my seat, the arena was starting to fill up, there was weed in the air, and it was easy to forget what was starting to happen around the world…There was something glorious and uplifting about hearing those songs played with such care and such fire; it felt as if the music was not just being saluted but preserved for a future generation. At various times, like when Trucks and Haynes played the simultaneous leads in ‘Jessica,’ the show was surprisingly emotional. In retrospect, it’s hard to say how much was due to the performance and how much to the circumstances. I joked to the friend next to me that this would be “the last concert ever.” But as Derek Trucks told me in the days that followed, the show “felt like one of the last moments for a long time when people would be able to suspend reality and let go.” One of these days, we’ll let go again.” Read his full review here.

Shortly after the show, guitarist/singer Warren Haynes told American Songwriter, “It was a very surreal night I think for all of us. It would have been under normal circumstances. But as we got closer and closer to show date, we were all wondering if we’re going to be allowed to play. We barely got in under the wire and then the next couple of days, they basically started shutting down everything and cancelling shows everywhere. It’s very bizarre that we turned out to be the last big show like that, and very strange in hindsight that we were probably all exposed much more than we realized.” Guitarist Derek Trucks spoke to Rolling Stone, adding “It was a one-off celebration of 50 years of the band and it was sold out. But I know a bunch of people who had tickets who didn’t come. My parents were unable to make it. They were worried about traveling and their doctor told them not to hop on a plane to New York. So that was bittersweet in a lot of ways. You wish it had been slammed to the rafters and everyone wouldn’t have had that in the back of their mind.”

The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame group formed in 1969 and quickly became one of the most popular live bands in American rock music history, selling millions of records along the way. Hailed for their live improvisation and marathon performances, the group released the At Fillmore East album in 1971, and it’s still hailed as one of the best live albums ever.

Joining The Brothers for the 3/10/20 event was keyboardist Reese Wynans (who played in the Second Coming with future ABB founding members Dickey Betts and Berry Oakley, and was a part of the early 1969 jam sessions which led to the formation of ABB) and Duane Trucks, Derek’s brother (and current drummer for Widespread Panic). Chuck Leavell joined ABB in 1972 (following Duane Allman’s passing) and played with the group until a hiatus in 1976; he’s been with the Rolling Stones since 1981.

A portion of the proceeds of the live show benefitted The Big House in Macon, GA which was the band’s home from 1970-1973 and now serves as their official museum.

The Sheepdogs Release “No Simple Thing”

0

Canada’s favorite band of rugged rockers, The Sheepdogs have released their new EP No Simple Thing, their first new music since 2018’s Changing Colours. Recorded in Montreal in the studio built by Mahogany Rush’s Frank Marino, the legendary Mixart Studios, in late summer 2020. The band laid down all tracks for the EP live in the sprawling studio with old-school monitors on mammoth 2” analog tape under the watchful eye of producer and frontman Ewan Currie. The hotly anticipated new EP was heralded by the glammy single “Keep on Loving You,” and immediately rocketed up the Canadian radio charts upon release.

Of recording the new music Ewan says, “This is the longest we’ve gone without writing, performing and recording together since we started the band 17 years ago. We’ve never really taken a break or long pauses so it was very foreign to us and was amazing when we could finally get together and make something together. It was really important to us that we did it in a studio that allowed us to all play together and really have that energy in the room, similar to when we play live. That’s why Mixart was such a great studio, and I think our excitement and energy really shows through on these songs.”

To celebrate the release of No Simple Thing The Sheepdogs are joining fans today for a live Zoom event. The event will feature a live Q&A with the group, an attempt to break the world record for most beers shotgunned at once along with a few special surprises. Festivities kick off at 8:00 PM EDT tonight, with free tickets available here.

Keeping with the love of vinyl that previously earned the group the title of Record Store Day’s Ambassador of Canada, the group are releasing a coloured vinyl version of the album exclusive to select local independent record retailers. This exclusive printing also includes a limited-edition screen-printed alternative cover. Ask for the album at your local independent record store today.

Hailing from Saskatoon, The Sheepdogs are one of Canada’s most successful bands amassing a legion of fans worldwide with their rich harmonies, rounded guitar tones and classic rock influenced sound. All told, the band have scored nine Top 20’s, with six of those Top 5’s and three single taking the #1 spot on Canadian Rock radio including, “Hole Where My Heart Should Be” from their 2018 studio LP Changing Colours. Hit singles “I Don’t Know” and “Feeling Good” both reached Platinum certification, with “The Way It Is” achieving Gold sales. Additionally, the albums Learn & Burn and The Sheepdogs both achieved Platinum status and to date the band has been nominated for 10 JUNO awards, winning four of the coveted trophies including Breakthrough Group (2012) and Rock Album of the Year. The Sheepdogs have notably received Rock Album of the Year nominations for all four of their last studio albums. The band were the first to be selected as the Record Store Day Canada Ambassadors in 2018 and have sold out shows from coast to coast and around the world.

Nathaniel Rateliff’s Live Album “Red Rocks 2020” Out July 16 On Stax Records

0

Red Rocks 2020, the forthcoming live album from Nathaniel Rateliff, is set for release on July 16 via Stax Records. The 18-track live record was recorded in an empty Red Rocks Amphitheatre during Rateliff’s mid-September run of socially distanced shows, which was limited to 125 attendees per night in the 9,400-capacity venue. Through Red Rocks 2020, Rateliff offers this 90-minute live experience to the fans who were unable to attend his live shows last year.

In celebration of the upcoming record, Rateliff is debuting a live rendition of his track Mavis, which appears on his acclaimed 2020 solo album, And It’s Still Alright. Unintentionally, the song speaks to lack of in-person interaction that occurred last year; Rateliff opens the song by singing, “In other worlds, in other worlds I would be with you/And other nights, and other nights I think I’ve seen you.”

Says Nathaniel, “We started out 2020 very excited. The solo record was out and myself and the most of the guys in the Night Sweats were gonna hit the road to present the songs to the world. We were looking forward to performing the songs together with a string quartet and how it was going to make us a better band.

We had some of our favorite song writers and friends hitting the road with us. With a grand finale at Red Rocks with Kevin Morby and Damien Jurado.

Then the world came to stand still.

The songs on ‘And It’s Still Alright’ were about finding hope in times of struggles, and now it seemed the whole world was struggling. So a few months into the Pandemic we started to wonder if there was a way to bring the show we worked so hard on to everyone. If you can’t find a light you have to create one.

Somehow, we were able to play 6 nights at Red Rocks with the full 10-piece band and the production we had created for the show. Kevin Morby and Katie Crutchfield drove out from Missouri to join us.

Five of the nights had 175 people and one night we filmed to and empty amphitheater that normally holds 10,000 people.

It was beautiful to be there, even if it was 175 people. But the night we recorded this record it was heart breaking.

It was a realization that our world had changed and maybe forever. Needless to say it was a hard night to make it through. But we did it and now we are bringing it to you.”

On March 2, 2020 in Minneapolis, Rateliff kicked off his sold-out nine-month tour supporting And It’s Still Alright. Nine days later the extensive run of dates was cancelled due to the pandemic. The shows aimed to highlight various aspects of Rateliff’s stellar musicianship, showcasing stripped-back moments with just his voice and acoustic guitar to a full 10-piece folk band accompaniment including a string quartet.

Red Rocks 2020 features a wide range of music from Rateliff’s celebrated career, which includes songs that had never been performed live, several tracks from And It’s Still Alright and his previously released solo albums—In Memory of Loss, Falling Faster Than You Can Run and the Shroud EP—as well as Still Out There Running, a track from The Night Sweats’ beloved 2017 album, Tearing at the Seams. In addition, Rateliff’s close friend Kevin Morby, who was set to open the cancelled Red Rocks dates in August 2020, joins him for a duet on Leonard Cohen’s There Is A War.

The cast of musicians includes Rateliff (guitar) with fellow Night Sweats members Joseph Pope III (bass), Mark Shusterman (keys), Patrick Meese (drums, keys, guitar) and Luke Mossman (guitar) along with James Barone (drums, guitar), Joy Adams (cello), Rachel Sliker (viola), Adrienne Short (violin) and Chris Jusell (violin).

Earlier this year, Rateliff made his debut as the musical guest on Saturday Night Live nearly one year after the release of his solo album And It’s Still Alright (Stax Records), which was released to widespread critical praise. The record peaked at #3 on iTunes’ Top Albums chart, debuted at #1 on Billboard’s Americana/Folk chart, landed at #2 on their Current Rock chart and resided at #1 on the Americana Albums Chart for eight consecutive weeks. The lead single and title track was #1 for eight consecutive weeks at Triple A Radio, #1 for nine consecutive weeks on the Americana Singles chart and #1 for three weeks at Non-Commercial radio, while NPR’s World Cafe ranked the track #1 on their list of Public Radio’s Most Popular Songs Of 2020. Additionally, the single Time Stands peaked at #1 on the Americana Singles chart and appeared within the Top 5 at Triple A Radio. Rateliff also performed on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, The Late Show With Stephen Colbert, Jimmy Kimmel Live! and CMT Crossroads while his Tiny Desk (Home) Concert premiered on NPR Music in mid- April.

My Next Read: William Lee Golden of The Oak Ridge Boys Releases New Autobiography ‘Behind the Beard’

0

William Lee Golden, member of the GRAMMY Award-winning and Country Music Hall of Fame group, The Oak Ridge Boys, tells all with the release of his new autobiography titled ‘Behind the Beard,’ written with Scot England. The amusing, poignant, and brutally honest memoir takes readers on a journey from William Lee’s humble Alabama childhood and teenage roots to singing on stage with his favorite group, and all the shocking details in between that were certainly worth the wait.

“When you write your life story, and you decide to bare everything, it’s kind of scary. It feels a lot like getting naked…in front of the entire world. Now that I’ve committed to it, there is one thing going through my mind…if I was going to get naked in front of everyone, I probably shouldn’t have waited until I was 82 years old,” shares William Lee.

‘Behind the Beard’ not only takes readers on an exclusive look into William Lee’s vision of turning a gospel group into one of the biggest acts in country music history and stories of 50 years on the road with The Oak Ridge Boys, but dives deeper into personal hardships he faced throughout his life. William Lee divulges the real reason he was away from the group for nine years, his first wife’s one-of-a-kind reaction when she learned he had been unfaithful, and how he made his “Prodigal Son” return to the Oaks. He also addresses the burning questions about his iconic beard like, when and why he started growing it, and if he will ever cut it, with answers that might surprise you!

“William Lee Golden is a lot of different things to a lot of different people. But he is a person who knows who he is. He has dedicated his life to helping people. William is a man of integrity and honesty, and you will read his very honest words in this book,” shares Jim Halsey, Manager of The Oak Ridge Boys.

Fans will want to reserve their copy of ‘Behind the Beard,’ which includes over 200 rare, never-before-seen photos from William Lee’s personal collection, read about his past, and learn about his vision for the future with his family and The Oak Ridge Boys. Autographed copies, personally signed by William Lee, are also available and will ship as soon as he autographs yours!

To order ‘Behind The Beard,’ visit www.williamleegoldenbook.com or at Amazon.com.

Along with the launch of his autobiography, William Lee is involved in several other upcoming projects, including the release of The Oak Ridge Boys’ new album ‘Front Porch Singin’ on June 11, which is the group’s fourth collaboration with Grammy-winning producer Dave Cobb. William Lee is also working with his sons, ‘The Goldens,’ to release three new rock, country, and gospel albums.

Mary Wilson’s Self-Titled Solo Album From The Gus Dudgeon Sessions Gets Expanded Release

0

Legendary artist/author and original and founding member of the Supremes, Mary Wilson was also known as a tireless advocate for the Black and LGBTQ+ communities.

The April release of Mary Wilson: Expanded Edition, represented an ongoing effort to honour her memory and her passion for celebrating life through music. Her work to raise awareness of the need for tolerance and equality is especially poignant during June, which is dedicated to Black Music Month and Pride Month; her music provides a fitting backdrop to celebrations and events — from intimate events to large-scale community celebrations.

Ms. Wilson believed in the power of music, especially the joy The Supremes brought to the world. She carried on that legacy throughout her career and right up to the days before her untimely passing in February, just weeks before the release of Mary Wilson: Expanded Edition.

“The music was inclusive. It didn’t matter who you were, the music touched your soul. Music, to me, brought all the souls together. I’ve always said that Motown was an ambassador for love and for friendship because it brought people together.” – Mary Wilson in a 2015 interview with Pride Source.

Mary Wilson: Expanded Edition was originally announced to celebrate her 77th Birthday and honor her history and legacy with the first of her album projects. Ms. Wilson, who retained ownership of her solo recordings, wanted to make the album – and much more – available to her many fans around the world. Mary Wilson: Expanded Edition is a newly compiled version of her solo album, originally released by Motown in 1979, that will now be available on all digital platforms for the first time. Added to the album are eight incredible bonus tracks, four of them unreleased, including the legendary tracks recorded as a follow-up to the album produced by Gus Dudgeon (Elton John, Joan Armatrading, Chris Rea, et al). Featured as the lead single is a brand-new song, “Why Can’t We All Get Along,” produced by Richard Davis and co-written with Angelo Bond, who previously had great success as a co-writer with General Johnson and Greg Perry for “Bring The Boys Home.”

Mary Wilson, who had many fond memories around recording her solo debut, was so excited about the release of this album that, after finalizing details with UMe, she created an impromptu “teaser,” posting what was to be her final YouTube video. “I finally decided how to work with Universal, and they are going to release new Mary Wilson recordings,” she said. “Yes! At last! At last,” adding that the expanded version of the album, known by her and to fans as “Red Hot,” referring to its lead single, will include the Dudgeon productions – and something new. “It was four wonderful songs that were never released… and I also have some other songs, some surprising new songs… Thank you Universal for chiming in with me and helping this come true. Hopefully some of that will be out on my birthday, March 6th… I’ve got my fingers crossed.”

Sadly, the world mourned the sudden passing of Mary Wilson on February 8th, which also marked the 56th anniversary of The Supremes’ #1 hit, “Stop! In the Name Of Love.” She was a world-renowned singer, best-selling author, a humanitarian, artist rights advocate, philanthropist, cultural ambassador for the U.S. appointed by Colin Powell, but she was best known as a “Supreme.” She was the co-founder of the original Supremes, along with Diana Ross and Florence Ballard, which signed to Motown in January 1961, making this year their 60th anniversary. The group broke down barriers by becoming the world’s most popular female singing trio, with an unprecedented string of 12 number one hits, 33 top 40 singles, a record breaking 5 consecutive number ones, and the first number one album for a female group. Mary Wilson is the only member with the group from their signing in 1961 to their disbanding in 1977. Their legendary history is the foundation for dozens of books, movies, and even three Broadway musicals.

But the often-overlooked history is of the solo careers of Mary Wilson and Florence Ballard. Ballard had previously released an album on ABC Records while, upon leaving the Supremes, Mary Wilson released her self-titled solo album debut on Motown, her label for the previous 18 years. Mary Wilson had the potential of becoming a dance classic. Famed Motown Producer Hal Davis, known for #1 hits on the Jackson 5, Thelma Houston and Diana Ross crafted a lush disco album for Wilson, with six dance tracks and a mid-tempo ballad. Wilson recorded the album while pregnant with her youngest son, Raphael, and for the album’s cover shoot she was wrapped in a jacket to hide the pregnancy.

“Red Hot” was the obvious lead single. But just prior to the release of the album the infamous Disco Demolition Night took place at Comiskey Park in Chicago on July 12, 1979. The “Disco Sucks” movement impacted the release of Mary Wilson, and the single reached #85 on the dance chart and #95 on the R&B chart. This new collection retrieves for history the song’s rare 12” and 7” mixes, which were unique from the album’s version. Despite being loved by fans, and the release of a second single, “Pick Up the Pieces” in the U.K., the Mary Wilson album did not get the recognition it deserved.

In 1980, Mary Wilson headed to Europe to record with Elton John’s producer, Gus Dudgeon. The late Dudgeon, who started as Decca Records’ in-house recording engineer, became a key creative collaborator with Elton John, producing seven No. 1 albums, in addition to creating masterworks with David Bowie, Joan Armatrading, Chris Rea, and many more.

Wilson wrote in her second autobiography, Supreme Faith: Someday We’ll Be Together, “I was very excited about these four songs. It wasn’t the formula disco of my first album. Two of the songs were big ballads. The other two were rock and roll in the style of Tina Turner’s mid-eighties hits; I was certainly ahead of the time.” Three of the four songs were never released. The fourth song, “You Dance My Heart Around the Stars,” first made available in 2015 on a collection of the co-writer’s, Steve Kalinich, a frequent collaborator of the Beach Boys, is considered one of Wilson’s finest performances.

In 1986 Mary Wilson wrote her best-selling autobiography, Dreamgirl: My Life As A Supreme, followed by two more books, Supreme Faith: Someday We’ll Be Together, and Supreme Glamour. Although Mary continued to record and release music through the rest of her career, fans have continually requested to hear this music. These songs remain among the most requested items in the Motown catalogue.

While recording more music over the last 10 years, Mary Wilson reconnected with Richard Davis, executive of Gold Forever Music, a publishing company established by Eddie Holland after leaving Motown. In the early days of Motown, Holland-Dozier-Holland was the songwriting team responsible for The Supremes’ string of hit records.

While Mary continued to record, she kept a journal with her most personal thoughts, perspective, outlook, philosophy on life, beliefs based on her experiences and topics of the day. Richard Davis discussed this song with Wilson. Mary told Davis and Bond that their lyrics were able to capture and articulate her feelings into song and help her tell her story. As she was watching and writing about her feelings about the political unrest and the division in the country, Mary felt strongly about releasing “Why Can’t We All Get Along,” now in the hopes of spreading a positive message through music.
