Sting Celebrates 30th Anniversary Of ‘The Soul Cages’ With Digital-Only Expanded Edition Out January 15

Today, Sting announces the 30th Anniversary of his stirring third album, The Soul Cages, by releasing a digital-only expanded edition.

Originally released in January 1991, the Expanded Edition features the original nine-song Soul Cages album plus 13 bonus tracks that consist of remixes, extended mixes, and a pair of songs sung in Spanish and Italian incarnations. Seven of these bonus tracks have not been previously available for digital download or streaming.

The core nine-track song cycle for The Soul Cages centers around Sting’s deep sense of personal loss following his father’s passing. The balance of the album’s lyrical content embarks on a recurring seafaring motif in honor of his father’s lifetime lamentation about never becoming a sailor, one of his unrealized personal dreams. The opening track, the slow-churning “Island Of Souls,” follows a son’s reverie about his fervent wish to take his shipbuilding father somewhere, anywhere out on the water in order to get away from it all, while “Why Should I Cry For You” chronicles the arc of the narrator’s fragile inner resolve. The relatively jaunty nature of the hit single “All This Time” runs cleverly counter to its burial-at-sea narrative, as the majestic, moody album closer “When The Angels Fall” ruminates on Sting’s staunch Catholic upbringing and the long-term effects of familial spiritual beliefs.

In fact, the ongoing impact of the deeply entrenched subject matter comprising The Soul Cages would remain with Sting, the artist for decades to come. Ultimately, it fueled him to author the music and lyrics for his first stage musical, The Last Ship, which debuted in 2014 and focused on the rise and fall of the shipbuilding industry in his native England.

Produced by Sting and Hugh Padgham, The Soul Cages also marked the first occasion that longtime stage and studio collaborator, the acclaimed guitarist Dominic Miller, appeared on one of Sting’s albums. Other notable topline Soul Cages creative contributors include keyboardists David Sancious and the late Kenny Kirkland, saxophonist Branford Marsalis, and drummer Manu Katché. For his own part, Sting played bass, mandolin, and synthesizer on The Soul Cages, in addition to singing all of the album’s lead vocals.

The Soul Cages has been certified platinum by the RIAA, and it topped the album charts in five countries, including the U.K. and Canada, topping out at No. 2 on the U.S. Billboard 200. The album’s lead single, “All This Time,” made a tremendous chart impact right out of the gate, ultimately reaching No. 5 on the U.S. Hot 100, No. 1 on both Mainstream Rock and Modern Rock, and No. 9 on Adult Contemporary. The title track, “The Soul Cages,” won a Grammy for Best Rock Song in 1992, and it climbed to No. 7 on Mainstream Rock and No. 9 on Modern Rock. The album’s other key singles were “Mad About You” and “Why Should I Cry For You.”

First Time Recorded Live in 40 Years: BENTWOOD ROCKER Release Video Album

First at it in 1977, Bentwood Rocker continue to craft their legacy in the making with this, the first instalments of their new visual album — available now.

Fans of the five-piece were treated to the first taste with the double release of “I’m Not Taken” and “Give Her An Inch” this month. The Ontario-based rockers have five additional songs to follow, all professionally captured via Empire Theatre’s Music City Mondays series — a pandemic-related initiative by the Belleville-based venue.

“This is the first time in our over 40 years together that the band has been recorded live!” they marvel.

It’s yet another milestone for members Dan Thompson, Eric Baragar, Mike Goettler, Barry Haggarty, and Steve Smith.

Since staking claim to their rightful spot on the Canadian music map, the course of their careers have seen them serve countless albums and singles; they’ve shared the stage and studio with the likes of Randy Bachman, Bob Dylan, Sass Jordan, Tom Cochrane, producers Jack Richardson (Bob Segar, Alice Cooper), Terry Brown (Rush), engineers Dennis Hetzendorfer (The Bee Gees, John Mellencamp), Mike Jones (Bryan Adams, Blue Rodeo), and more.

Having started as a studio project in the late ‘70s after more than a decade prior of performing mostly cover material under the name Sands of Time, the group added vocalist Thompson to the mix and set off to create original lyrics and compositions.

With their debut album, Not Taken, first out in 1979, Take Me To Heaven followed in 1982. There was a self-titled offering, Bentwood Rocker in 1996, and The Works — a boxset — in 2000. In all there’s been eight albums altogether and, in 2017, the band reconvened in the studio to rock out an EP trilogy — aptly titled Take One, Take Two, and Take Three. In 2020 they extended a single, “Hold On,” to the masses as well.

“Over forty years…” they say. “Over forty years of recording and performing together as a group, with all original members.

“That’s what sets us apart in the world of popular music.”

X Ambassadors Announce New Project (Eg)

X Ambassadors have announced a new project called (Eg), a multi-part series featuring collaborations with an eclectic mix of emerging artists. Also featuring up-and-coming artists Jensen McRae and Earl St. Clair, (Eg) was conceived as an outlet for X Ambassadors’ more free-flowing and left-of-center impulses. The project is a natural progression for the hyper-creative and highly collaborative band, whose output includes producing and writing for global superstars like Rihanna and working extensively with Lizzo on her massively successful 2019 album Cuz I Love You (including co-writing and producing tracks like “Jerome,” winner of Best Traditional R&B Performance at the 62nd Annual GRAMMY Awards).

As lead singer Sam Nelson Harris reveals, (Eg) took shape from an undeniable urge to showcase some of the talent they’ve discovered through their production and co-writing work. “We wanted to give voice to these incredible artists that people may not have heard yet, and really let their imagination be at the forefront of everything,” he says. “They’re all very much artists with their own unique style that’s so specific to them; they truly don’t care about fitting into any sort of mold, or curating their sound to anything other than what they envision.”

With its bass-heavy grooves and furious momentum, “ultraviolet.tragedies” was sparked from a jam session between X Ambassadors and Hines, a multi-instrumentalist who released his critically acclaimed Portal One: The Mixtape last August. Capped off by an epically eerie operatic climax from Harris, “ultraviolet.tragedies” is accompanied by an equally enthralling visual that transcends the traditional music-video format by integrating elements of an off-the-cuff conversation in which Hines speaks with Harris about his origins as an artist, including his upbringing in Georgia. X Ambassadors used Microsoft Azure Kinect Body Tracking SDK and bespoke software meant to serve as a tool for artists aiming to capture 3D joint data of subjects’ movements in real-time. Microsoft Azure Kinect’s Sensor SDK also provides the ability to capture and output real-time point cloud; the output is then seamlessly integrated into 3D software, ultimately opening a new medium for creative expression.

X Ambassadors’ first new music since their spring 2020 single “Zen” (a collaboration with K.Flay and grandson that’s now amassed over 17 million streams), (Eg) came to life as the band completed their third full-length effort, due out later this year. According to Harris, the project has already had an indelible impact on their evolution as musicians and creators. “All the artists we’ve worked with on (Eg) have reminded me how important it is to make what you love and not think twice about it,” he says. “When people hear the project, I hope they come away with that same sense of freedom, and also just feel the pure joy that comes from the art of collaboration.”

X Ambassadors made their full-length debut with VHS, a 2015 release that saw the band transition from Ithaca alt-rockers and Brooklyn-indie-scene outsiders to Billboard stalwarts. Now certified platinum, VHS provided an intimate look at Sam Nelson Harris and his brother Casey Harris’s youth, delivering the genre-defying hits “Unsteady” and “Renegades” and leading to a three-year global touring odyssey as well as a string of high-profile festival performances. VHS was followed by X Ambassadors’ 2019 sophomore album ORION, which the band supported with an extensive headline tour of the U.S. Their ’60s and ’70s soul, R&B, inspired Belong EP was released last March.

The core of his sound is a living mix of eerie soul, alt-pop, hip-hop, post-punk, and southern funk, but Terrell Hines is a world-builder with a voracious mind. This Georgia-born, Los Angeles-based visionary has created an entire ecosystem for his songs, where sonic structures and lyrics are just as likely to be inspired by the sociopolitical as the personal, by functional architecture as abstract art, by the austere science of survivalism as the limitless potential of technology. The best part is, you don’t have to know all that to feel the holistic magic of Hines’s work. We hear immediacy, exuberance, freedom, and ingenuity — music as surprising as it is captivating — while he sees a burning question: “If shit popped off and society had to be rebuilt,” asks Hines, “how would I do it?”

Today, Selena Gomez released her first Spanish language single in nearly a decade, “De Una Vez” (“At Once”).

Embracing her heritage as a proud Latina, Gomez wanted to immerse herself in the culture and it was important to her to join forces with some of the industry’s most influential Latin creators in order to communicate the purest vision possible. To bring the track to life, she teamed up with multi-Latin Grammy Award-winner and powerhouse producer Tainy [Bad Bunny, J Balvin] joined by Albert Hype, Jota Rosa and NEON16. Soran Releases Brand New Single “Bottled Up” Today

Today singer singer-songwriter Soran shared “Bottled Up” his first musical offering of 2021.

Speaking about the new single Soran commented, “Bottled is about feeling like someone else when you’re around that one person and wishing you could talk, act differently.” He continued, “The song is about how the nerves often take over the conversations.”

“Bottled Up” follows the artists recent singles, “Anchor,” “Right Here”, “Comfortable” and “Until The Day I Die” a heartfelt tribute to his late mother.

The Montreal-based artist is set to play handful of live shows in February 2021.

Born on the south shore of Montreal to a Japanese mother and a French father, Soran grew up surrounded by his father’s musical instruments, on which he could begin to experiment and learn. Soran initially gained a strong fan following from posting covers and originals on social media and his fanbase only grew stronger after appearing on La Voix in Quebec. In 2016 Soran signed with Audiogram and released his single “I Wish.” Soran went on to release a six song EP in 2018 on which he played all the instruments and co-produced with Connor Seidel (Matt Holubowski, Elliot Maginot, Charlotte Cardin). The EP’s songs have garnered over 10 million streams globally. The Summer of 2019 saw Soran collaborate with popular Belgium DJ, Henri PFR, on his summer single ‘’Going On”, which is certified gold in Belgium. In September 2019, German DJ duo, Gamper & Dadoni, released a remix of Soran’s ‘Julia’, which further introduced Soran to new fans.

Marianne Faithfull and Warren Ellis announce new album ‘She Walks In Beauty’ with Nick Cave and Brian Eno

On April 30, Marianne Faithfull with composer and multi-instrumentalist Warren Ellis, will release She Walks in Beauty, one of the most distinctive albums of her long, extraordinary life and career. Recorded around the earliest days of the Covid-19 lockdown–during which the singer herself became infected and almost died of the disease–She Walks in Beauty fulfills Faithfull’s long-held ambition to record a full album of poetry with music, and features musical friends Nick Cave, Brian Eno, cellist Vincent Ségal and producer-engineer Head (PJ Harvey, Thom Yorke).

She Walks in Beauty finds Faithfull drawing deep on the works of Shelley, Keats, Byron, Wordsworth, Tennyson and Thomas. Her vocal performances, set to Ellis’ subtle collages of sound, draw out the vibrant living matter in these great poems, renewing them with the complex, lived-in timbres of her voice. It’s both a radical departure and a return to her original inspirations as an artist and performer.

For his part, Ellis describes the music of She Walks in Beauty as a kind of musique concrete, incorporating street sounds with a range of acoustic and electronic instrumentation and manipulation. “My preferred way of making music is to leave a lot of it to chance, to let accidents happen,” he says. “I’ve been moving away from structures in things. This music is me attempting to push forward. I think it’s as good as anything I’ve ever done,” he adds, “in terms of the spirit of it and the process I went through to make it.”

That process would eventually come to include contributions from Nick Cave, who played piano on many of the tracks; Brian Eno, who created sound textures for “La Belle Dame Sans Merci” and “The Bridge of Sighs”; and Vincent Ségal, who added cello Shelley’s liminal, otherworldly “To The Moon,” and Byron’s late night lament “So We’ll Go No More A Roving,” among others.

Faithfull first developed a passion for the English Romantic poets in her A Level studies with one Mrs. Simpson at St Joseph’s Convent School in Reading, before leaving for London at the age of 16. She has returned to poetry for inspiration many times since: whether on 1979’s Broken English, an album which featured her setting to music Heathcote Williams’ poem of eviscerating rage, “Why’d Ya Do It,” or on subsequent albums, such as 1995’s A Secret Life, which featured the poems of her friend Frank McGuinness, or 1998’s Seven Deadly Sins which explored the work of Kurt Weill and Bertolt Brecht.

Still, the works chosen for She Walks in Beauty hold special pride of place. “I wasn’t in doubt,” says Faithfull. “I’ve been thinking about it for so long, this album, it’s been in my head for so long, I think I really knew exactly what I wanted. I just picked the poems I really loved, and I can’t help but say I think I was very lucky. We got it.”

Neil Young and Crazy Horse Announces “Way Down in the Rust Bucket” Live DVD

Neil Young will release Way Down in the Rust Bucket, a new archival live album and concert film, on February 26. Recorded in 1990 at The Catalyst in Santa Cruz, CA, where the band was rehearsing for their upcoming Ragged Glory tour. Young announced the release on his site on January 1, 2020 with the intention to release it that year along with Greendale Live, which was later retitled Return to Greendale, a 2003 rock opera that also features Crazy Horse.

Young has also previously shown all the concert video footage of this show as part of the Movietone section of his Archives website.

Kiss’ Paul Stanley Releases First Full-Length Soul Station Album

KISS co-founder & frontman, best-selling author and Rock & Roll Hall of Famer PAUL STANLEY has spent the last few years developing a project close to his heart. Soul Station is a band gathering some of today’s leading musicians to pay tribute to the greatest artists and songs from the R&B and soul catalog to keep this vital music current. While a surprise to many, Stanley’s early pivotal roots in this music has quietly turned this passion into a celebrated touring and recording band. Stanley’s 15-piece ensemble group has toured the U.S. and Japan, and recently recorded an album of nine classic soul songs and five new original songs. NOW AND THEN will be released March 5, and the first single “O-O-H Child” (The Five Stairsteps) is available today.

Speaking to new music, Stanley said: “Between us doing some great Soul Station shows and starting the album I started to think that neither the band or the music we love should depend only on the past so I started writing with the goal of seamlessly taking songs into the present. From what a lot of people I respect have told me, that mission was accomplished.”

When Stanley conceived Soul Station, the group excelled in the live venue setting, playing smaller, intimate clubs – a setting where Paul Stanley would reflect on those classic hits that were his early inspiration, playing the songs with a reverence and respect for how he and the band believe they should be performed and heard.

“Long before I ever heard the great British bands, I grew up listening to Philly Soul, Motown and so much more. I was lucky to see Otis Redding and Solomon Burke among others. That music and its storytelling gave me strength and hope even in some tough days. The great classics of that era are magical medicine for most and I felt myself drawn back to that era for some sorcery I think we could all use.”

Stanley’s legendary band members will include: Rafael “Hoffa” Moreira (guitar & backing vocals), Sean Hurley (bass), Alex Alessandroni (Musical Director, keyboards), Ely Rise (keyboards), Eric Singer (drums & backing vocals), RayYslas (percussion), Gavyn Rhone (backing vocals), Crystal Starr (backing vocals) and Laurhan Beato (backing vocals) and Jon Pappenbrook (lead trumpet).

The band is augmented by three string players and two horn players of the same stature enabling Soul Station’s wall of sound to be firmly rooted in the past while staking claim to both the present and future.
